Joanna Newsom is currently in the midst of her “Strings/Keys” residency at The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles. During her matinee performance on Saturday (May 18th), the singer-songwriter played a set filled with children’s songs and debuted a new composition titled “Rovenshere.”
Newsom had advertised the Saturday show as “not only suitable for children, but specifically designed with them in mind,” which meant playing covers of “Teddy Bears’ Picnic” and Jim Henson’s “Tadpole” and “The Frogs in the Glen” while accompanied by puppeteers.

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten proper new music from Fleet Foxes, but Robin Pecknold has offered something to tide fans over with live covers of The Strokes’ “Under Control” and Joni Mitchell’s “Hejira.”
“Under Control” was recorded during Fleet Foxes’ show at Forest Hills Stadium in New York last year, while they did “Hejira” during “The Spring Recital” at The Belasco in Los Angeles in March. Frequent collaborators The Westerlies perform horns on both, with Uwade, Daniel Rossen, and Greg Pecknold also contributing.
Understandably, Pecknold has quite a few words to share about his renditions of the two classic songs: “Last summer we were honored to have the incredible vocalist and songwriter Uwade Akhere open for us on tour,” he said in a press release of “Under Control.” “One thing we all bonded over backstage was a shared love of The Strokes — hearing Uwa’s...

Newsom played seven songs, including “Go Long” and “Sawdust & Diamonds.

The stars of the Amazon Studios documentary Wildcat are a man, a woman and an orphaned baby jungle cat they live with in a rainforest in Peru. The subject of this first feature from a filmmaking couple based in Virginia is something more: how to survive psychological damage and suicidal depression to find peace and a place in the world.
One half of the duo that made Wildcat, Melissa Lesh, wondered about the reception for a film that sounds easy to root for at first pass— because who doesn’t love people taking care of kittens? — and then digs into difficult topics including mental illness, despair and self harm.

“In my songwriting process, I usually start with melody,” he said. “Then I write a bunch of small little things and don’t really think about how to put them together until later when I end up with like a chorus that started as a bridge for something else. Or with things that take surprising directions in different combinations, that’s usually how it goes.

Fleet Foxes’ rustic neo-folk music and skybound harmonies loomed large over indie-ish rock in the early 2010s, not unlike the way Arcade Fire touched the mid-2000s or Pavement shaped the Nineties. Their last album, 2017’s correctly titled Crack-Up, was a stranger listen than usual for them, proggily ambitious and often opaquely sprawling. With Shore, their newly released fourth album, they’ve wandered back to the campfire, except only now it’s a world on fire: “We’re a long way from the past/I’ll be better off in a year in two,...

The worlds of cinema and music peacefully co-exist yet again. Fleet Foxes have not only surprise-released a brand-new album timed with the autumnal equinox, but an hour-long film to accompany it. The Seattle-based indie group, led by frontman Robin Pecknold, teamed with artist Kersti Jan Werdal for Shore, “a road-movie depicting Northwest American landscapes and the people and animals that inhabit them.”
Directed, shot, edited, designed, and cast by Kersti Jan Werdal, the gorgeous 16mm-shot film––which features the tracklist in order and title cards––is a perfect accompaniment to the lovely new album. It was shot on the following First Nations’ land: Clackamas, Cowlitz , Hoh, Klallam, Salish, Schitsu’umsh, Skokomish, and Twana.
“I listened to the album while driving, and observationally shot landscapes that I felt resonated with the music, yet also stood on their own,” Werdel said. “The film is intended to co-exist and engage with the album,...

In the spring of 2020, as the coronavirus pandemic tore through New York City at terrifying speed, Robin Pecknold stayed home in his rented one-bedroom apartment in Greenwich Village. “I wasn’t being creative at all,” says the Fleet Foxes singer-songwriter, 34. “There were some dark weeks where I would end up waking up at 7 or 8 p.m. and stay up until noon. The world just seemed like it was more sane at night.”

Dolly Parton’s surprise appearance may have grabbed most of the headlines during this past summer’s Newport Folk Festival, but one of the weekend’s most exciting moments came during the Sunday evening closing set when Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold, the Shins’ James Mercer and Eric Johnson (Fruit Bats) offered a note-by-note rendition of “Suite: Judy Blue Eyes,” Crosby, Stills & Nash’s 1969 classic.

When Fleet Foxes released their first album in 2008, the band immediately stood out for its acoustic strumming and wide-open Csny-style harmonies. The album sold more than 500,000 copies, with Rolling Stone naming it one of the 40 Greatest Stoner Albums of All Time and the group influencing a generation of indie-rock bands.
The band will celebrate the 10th anniversary of that album with First Collection 2006-2009, a huge package capturing their early days. It includes their debut album on 12-inch vinyl plus its two preceding EPs: Sun Giant, and their hard-to-find, self-released debut Ep.

A man finds himself stuck in a surreal Sisyphean loop in Fleet Foxes’ new short film for their Crack-Up opener, “I Am All That I Need / Arroyo Seco / Thumbprint Scar.”
Sean Pecknold, the brother of Fleet Foxes frontman Robin Pecknold, directed the video, which opens on a man sitting alone in a room, cigarette dangling from his mouth, staring at a floating cube. The man (played by Jean Charles) eventually leaves the room and begins sprinting up a mountain. At the top, he finds an even larger cube, but each...

Jackson C. Frank’s “Blues Run the Game” serves as the emotional centerpiece of This Is Us, providing the thread running through William’s tragic tale. Making two appearances on the NBC hit series, we hear it first in a flashback as William meets Randall’s mother Laurel on a city bus, and again during his final days as he travels back to Memphis and reflects on his life as he knows it’s reaching its end. Though gut-wrenching, Frank’s tragic true story rivals any drama that Hollywood could ever hope to dream up.

Wyoming Directed by Danya Taymor, Written by Brian Watkins Theater for the New City 155 First Avenue, New York, NY 10003 January 15 - 31, 2015
Spaces on the set of Brian Watkins's new play, Wyoming, are defined almost exclusively by tables -- bar tables, diner tables, kitchen tables, locations that often forge and sometimes force connections between people. Tables are just part of a range of everyday objects, including a locked box, a child's headphones, and a slide projector, that take on symbolic resonance in this meditation on time, choice, secrecy, and -- or perhaps through the lens of -- family. Wyoming, set primarily in the mid-'90s, centers on a Thanksgiving dinner during which the past of the particular family in question becomes unavoidable in various ways and for various, interwoven reasons. This breaking both of bread and of silences is directed by Danya Taymor, niece of the iconic Julie, and features original music from Robin Pecknold,...

Pearl Jam spent the week having its music feted on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” by other artists, including Dierks Bentley, Chris Cornell, the Avett Brothers, and Fleet Foxes Robin Pecknold,, but on Thursday night, it was the Seattle band’s time to take the stage. Pearl Jam performed a somewhat laid-back, yet intense, version of “Sirens,” the current single from “Lightning Bolt,” the No. 1 album on the Billboard 200. They will perform again tonight. Below Pearl Jam's performance, also check out Bentley's take on "Alive" (with help from the Roots and Pj's Mike McCready), as well as Cornell/Avett Bros.'s take...

If you're a Pearl Jam fan, get ready for a week of celebrating the band's new album on "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon." From October 21-25, the show will celebrate "Pearl Jam Week," with musical guests playing the band's biggest songs, before they take the stage themselves.
On Monday, Soundgarden's Chris Cornell will join the Avett Brothers for a performance of "Footsteps." After that, Fleet Foxes member Robin Pecknold will appear Tuesday with special guests for "Corduroy." Then, Wednesday, country singer Dierks Bentley will rock an unnamed song with The Roots and Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready.
That's all build up for the main event, as Pearl Jam performs both Thursday and Friday in their only televised gigs to promote the new album, "Lightning Bolt." This isn't the first time the band has played the "Late Night" stage, as they also did a two-night stand on the show in 2011.

Sean Pecknold originally came to prominence a few years back on the strength of the beautiful stop-motion music videos he created for the retro folk outfit Fleet Foxes, a group fronted by Sean’s brother, Robin Pecknold. He subsequently went on to make promos for other buzz bands such as Beach House and Grizzly Bear, whose music also has a transcendent quality that meshes with his dazzlingly inventive hand-crafted visions.
More recently, Pecknold has complemented his animated work with live-action music videos, like Here We Go Magic’s “How Do I Know?”, and is currently in postproduction on a live-action narrative feature entitled The Internet, which he wrote, co-directed with Matt Daniels, and also starred in. (Robin Pecknold provides the soundtrack.) The teaser for the film (embedded below) appeared on Vimeo a couple of months ago, and it’s probably the most exciting trailer I’ve seen all year. Based...

We said hello to bright new stars like Frank Ocean and the Weeknd and watched former breakouts Florence Welch and Drake take the next steps in their careers. Oh, and pretty much all of us bought Lady Gaga's Born This Way, or at least debated its pricing schemes.

Fleet Foxes' latest album "Helplessness Blues" has been out for a while, but they've been saving up at least one particular goodie for this, the end of the year. Frontman Robin Pecknold's brother Sean directed animated clip for the band, for "The Shrine/An Argument," which the brother animated together. It featuring myth, monsters and as much plot tension as the song's audio provides. I woke up still thinking about it. I'd recommend giving it a go. Sean Pecknold also helped out on Fleet Foxes' "Mykonos" and "White Winter Hymnal," and on Pearly Gate Music's "Rejoice," which I love. Pgm's Zach Tillman...
