Liverpool have some previous in the transfer market for misunderstanding the true nature of value: for every deal that sees them pocket £70m for Luis Suarez or £50m for Fernando Torres, there are countless that suggest an ineptitude in identifying the right targets. And though their work so far this summer has proved smart – particularly if they manage to add £8.5m Loic Remy to the squad too – in the past two years, they’ve over-spent on the likes of Ousmane Assaidi, Mamadou Sakho, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas, and Tiago Ilori.
It’s no surprise then that when the opportunity to make some of their money back, the club leap at the chance, why is probably why Fabio Borini – a player deemed surplus to requirements after just 13 league games and a solitary goal – is going to cost Sunderland £3m more than Liverpool paid for him.

It’s all change at Anfield as the summer transfer window opens, Brendan Rodgers sticks his head out of it and has a good whiff of the potential that’s out there. Which is to say, Liverpool are already in the thick of buying and selling members of its squad, having snapped up Southampton captain Adam Lallana for a cool £25 million yesterday, with rumours that the young trio of Suso, Samed Yesil and Luis Alberto are to be permanently shed from the roster over the coming weeks. And the ongoing saga of Luis Suarez which looks set to end his dramatic and thrilling time at Anfield.
Players leave a team for any number of reasons, but in the age of super star agents, bidding wars and tabloid hearsay thrown into the mix, the decision increasing lies not with managers, boardroom members or coaches,...

Liverpool came through a thorough Fa Cup fourth round examination from Championship club Bournemouth with Victor Moses and Daniel Sturridge scoring at Dean Court.
Eddie Howe’s Cherries made a swashbuckling start with Andrew Surman heading over. Brad Jones in the Reds goal had a torrid time from set pieces, palming over a dipping Simon Francis free kick in between dangerous corners.
Marc Pugh nodded into the side-netting from another set play on 20 minutes. Despite rarely threatening during the first quarter, Liverpool went close through Steven Gerrard’s dead ball and then caught their hosts on the counter.
Luis Suarez crossed from the right for winger Moses. His shot flew through the legs of Matt Ritchie and under Lee Camp on his near post. Bournemouth top scorer Lewis Grabban forced Jones into a low stops moments after the restart.
Harry Arter swerved a shot just wide after half an hour.

If there is one thing that can be learned by Liverpool’s performances against Manchester City and Chelsea in recent weeks, it is that they are improving and they are a top side, but they’re still not quite there in terms of title contention. The Merseyside team have grown in leaps and bounds recently and performances have evidently been improving, though they tend to fall short whenever facing the creme-de-la-creme in the Premier League, with the exception of the Manchester United and Tottenham wins earlier in the season. With the goals of Suarez, solid performances from the likes of Sakho and Sturridge, and the staggering improvements in Jordan Henderson, the future looks bright for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
However, the fact remains that Liverpool were top of the league on Christmas Day and have since dropped down four places to fifth. Needless to say,...

Liverpool reclaimed second place in the Premier League table with a big away win over Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
Luis Suarez scored twice for the Reds with Jordan Henderson, Jon Flanagan and Raheem Sterling on target. Tottenham finished with ten as Paulinho was sent off.
Sterling threatened twice for Liverpool after a unsettled opening from Spurs. Suarez then pounced on poor defending from Spurs skipper Michael Dawson and found the bottom corner on 18 minutes.
Philippe Coutinho then hit the bar between two other Suarez efforts that Hugo Lloris somehow dealt with. Tottenham meanwhile made a change with Lewis Holtby replacing midfield anchor Sandro.
The sub steered wide when Roberto Soldado teed him up as Hotspur began to pose the visitors more problems. Try as they might, however, the hosts could not keep the Reds out and their high line was culpable.

Liverpool were perhaps the busiest of the 20 Premier League clubs in the summer transfer window, bringing in eight new faces, such as Simon Mignolet, Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto.
These investments appeared to have been paying off until recently, with the Reds fighting it out with the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea for first place in the table.
However, last weekend’s defeat to the former put into stark reality the need for further investment in January, as Brendan Rodgers’ side were played off the park by the Gunners.
Rodgers himself admitted yesterday the need for new recruits if his side are to finally crack the top four and qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009-10, and hinted at as many as two new arrivals.

Liverpool’s steady progress this season suffered a setback when they lost their top of the table clash at Arsenal 2-0 at the weekend.
Whilst the Reds remain in the chasing pack along with the Gunners’ London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, boss Brendan Rodgers will be targeting January reinforcements.
Central midfield may be one area in particular that the Merseyside outfit will look to strengthen. Wide areas too may receive attention from Rodgers. And then there’s Luis Suarez. Speculation continues to be rife about the controversial Uruguayan’s future at Anfield.
The Reds’ summer recruitment was substantial, but has had mixed results. Spanish forward pair Iago Aspas and Luis Alberto have struggled to make an impact. Defenders Kolo Toure and Mamadou Sakho meanwhile have been regulars in a back three in front of Belgian keeper Simon Mignolet.

Liverpool were snubbed by Toby Alderweireld this summer before the centre-back agreed a move to Atletico Madrid, according to Team Talk.
The 23-year-old former Ajax defender was linked with a move to the Reds but instead completed a switch to Spain on transfer deadline day, after being lured away from the Amsterdam club.
Liverpool were in the running to sign the young Belgian international, but appear to have had their efforts to sign the player rebuffed.
Brendan Rodgers’s side instead ended up securing deals for Mamadou Sakho and Tiago Ilori from Paris St Germain and Sporting Lisbon, respectively, while Alderweireld claims he was their first choice.
He told the Spanish press following his arrival at Atletico:
“The club have been following me now for two or three weeks, and you could see they really wanted me.

For Liverpool, this summer, or indeed their start to the new Premier League season, could scarcely have gone any better.
Three wins from three – including one against old enemy Manchester United – nine points from nine and top of the table, not a bad start at all for Brendan Rodgers’ men.
And their good performances on the pitch follows success off it, as the Reds were able to complete the bulk of their transfer business with time to spare, bringing in eight new players before last night’s deadline day cut-off.
They were even able to persuade Luis Suarez to stay at Anfield – for now – after months of speculation linking the Uruguayan with a move to Arsenal and Real Madrid.
For a while, it looked as though their top goalscorer for last season might quit, but news that he is staying will come as welcome relief for the Kop.

As the deadline day for this summer’s transfer window fast approaches, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers can look back with very few regrets.
The Northern Irishman has been one of the more active Premier League bosses, buying in five new recruits in Aly Cissokho, Simon Mignolet, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Kolo Toure.
And while these players will doubtlessly improve Liverpool’s strength in depth over the course of what promises to be another arduous campaign, none of them can really be considered “marquee signings”.
Last month, Rodgers admitted that he was targeting “a higher calibre of player” in order to challenge for that ever-elusive top four spot.
But, despite being linked with the likes of Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Willian, the Merseysiders have thus far been unsuccessful in landing a really notable target.

Liverpool are close to the double signings of Schalke centre-back Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Derby County midfielder Will Hughes, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Schalke have conceded defeat in keeping hold of the highly-rated 21-year-old Papadopoulos this summer after the German club’s sporting director Horst Heldt said:
“There are a lot of clubs to take into account. We’re going to speak to each other when it takes concrete form.”
Liverpool are also well-placed to win the race for Derby’s 18-year-old Will Hughes, with Brendan Rodgers poised to lodge a £6 million bid later this week.

Liverpool are plotting a £30 million bid for Anzhi midfielder Willian, according to the Telegraph.
Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is believed to have made an enquiry with the Russian club into the 25-year-old ahead of a possible bid before the transfer window closes on September 2.
And Liverpool could take advantage of the recent financial troubles that have stricken Anzhi, who are undergoing major financial restructuring in an effort to slash costs.
Willian only joined the Russians in January from Shakhtar Donetsk but has been put up for sale.
Tottenham manager Andre-Villas-Boas is understood to be a bid admirer of the playmaker and could give Liverpool competition by entering the race, while Rodgers wants Willian as he is looking to make one significant signing this summer.

Liverpool have enjoyed an active summer transfer window with manager Brendan Rodgers wasting no time at all in bolstering his squad ahead of the new Premier League season in two weeks’ time.
Already, Kolo Toure, Luis Alberto, Iago Aspas and Simon Mignolet have been brought in while goalkeeper Pepe Reina has been loaned out to Italian outfit Napoli.
And Rodgers has promised that “more exciting” transfers are coming before the window slams shut on September 2.
Toure, Alberto, Aspas and Mignolet are all decent signings and will doubtlessly provide the Merseyside club with more depth than before, but none of them really get the pulses racing.
And Rodgers himself readily admits the club need a greater injection of quality if they are to challenge for a top four finish this term.
And that “injection of quality” might be essential if the club end up being forced into selling Luis Suarez to Arsenal.

Liverpool look to have beaten rivals Sunderland to the signature of Valencia left-back Aly Cissokho, with the player agreeing terms at Anfield, according to the Shields Gazette.
The Black Cats made an enquiry for Cissokho last month with manager Paolo Di Canio left frustrated in his attempts to bring in a new fullback at the Stadium of Light after Spurs blocked their attempts to re-loan Danny Rose.
Rose enjoyed a successful season during his short stint on Wearside in the 2012/13 campaign but the North East club have been forced into looking elsewhere for a left-back.
And their search for a new defender could continue with news that Liverpool have agreed terms with Cissokho.

The summer transfer window has been a productive one for Liverpool and manager Brendan Rodgers so far.
Already, four new recruits have been brought in to bolster the team with Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Manchester City defender Kolo Toure, Sevilla midfielder Luis Alberto and Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas all signing for the Merseyside giants in recent weeks.
Already, the Reds look well-placed to mount a serious challenge for the top four places next season, however, it has not been completely plain sailing for the Anfield outfit.
The club’s record goalscorer last season, Luis Suarez, looks set to leave the club having been the subject of two failed bids from Arsenal, one at £30 million and the other at £40 million and £1.
Despite these two offers being flatly rejected, the Uruguayan has been granted permission to hold transfer talks with Arsenal and could be about to call time on his two-year stay on Merseyside.

Liverpool have learned from their lessons last season and have wasted no time at all this summer in getting the bulk of the transfer dealings wrapped up in good time.

Liverpool could miss out on Christian Eriksen this summer after Italian giants AC Milan entered the race for his signature, according to talkSPORT.

Liverpool have been one of the most active Premier League clubs in this summer’s transfer market, with manager Brendan Rodgers having already signed four new recruits.
Goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, defender Kolo Toure, winger Luis Alberto and forward Iago Aspas have all been signed by the Merseyside giants over the last couple of weeks, but the spending isn’t going to end there.

With that, all talk recently has been about who will be coming through the Anfield entrance rather than who might be departing.
Stalwart Steven Gerrard is close to signing an extension at the club, but what of news at the opposite end of the spectrum? Who might be leaving the club this summer?

David Moyes has been in the Old Trafford hotseat for two full weeks now and still there is no sign of activity on the transfer front.
The ex-Everton manager has watched as his former Merseyside rivals Liverpool have brought in the likes of Simon Mignolet, Iago Aspas, Luis Alberto and Kolo Toure while he himself has yet to act this summer.
United have been linked recently with Leighton Baines, and have seen a £12 million bid for the left-back knocked back by Moyes’ former club, but other than that, the Premier League champions have been relatively inactive over the summer months.
That being said, Moyes confidently declared at the weekend that money is no object at Old Trafford and that he has all the cash he wants to spend on new recruits.
The 50-year-old told The Sun:
“Isn’t it great that the club says, ‘There’s no budget here, you...

Out of all the 20 Premier League clubs this summer, Liverpool have been the busiest in the transfer window so far.
Four players have joined the Anfield outfit so far – Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Manchester City defender Kolo Toure, Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas and Barcelona B midfielder Luis Alberto.
But manager Brendan Rodgers does not intend to stop his spending there. Yesterday, the Northern Irishman stated:
“We’ve improved the squad – now we must improve the team.”
To achieve said feat, the ex-Swansea boss wants to make some “marquee signings” this summer, in order to boost his side’s chances of qualifying for Europe next season.
The signings the 40-year-old has made so far vary from the experienced to the unknown. Toure and Mignolet will undoubtedly help bolster the Red’s defence but Aspas and Alberto still have much to prove, and only time will tell if they prove to be wise acquisitions.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is tracking Galatasary striker Burak Yilmaz, according to Team Talk.
The Northern Irishman is drawing up a shortlist of forwards to replace want-away Luis Suarez, should the unsettled Uruguayan secure a move away from Anfield this summer.
A host of the continent’s leading clubs have shown an interest in Suarez, with Real Madrid, Chelsea and Arsenal all displaying a vested interest in the 26-year-old.
Should the ex-Ajax man leave Liverpool this summer, Rodgers wants to bring in a big name to replace him, and has identified Yilmaz as one option who could help fill the void.
Yilmaz is considered one of the best strikers in Europe, and the Turkish international netted 24 goals in 30 league appearances for Galatasary last season after arriving from Trabzonspor.
The 27-year-old has also enjoyed spells at Beşiktaş and Fenerbahçe, and has scored 126 career goals.

Of all the Premier League’s 20 teams this summer, Liverpool have been the busiest.
Simon Mignolet of Sunderland, Manchester City’s Kolo Toure, Iago Aspas of Celta Vigo and Sevilla’s Luis Alberto have all signed for the Merseyside club in recent weeks, with more to come.
Indeed, this summer has been a far cry from the debacle of last summer’s transfer window, when Liverpool’s principal owner, John W Henry, had to write an open letter to fans after selling the likes of Dirk Kuyt and Craig Bellamy while also offloading Andy Carroll on-loan, but failing to add to the squad on the final day of the transfer deadline.
That left the Reds looking threadbare up until the January window, with Luis Suarez the only senior striker at the club prior to the winter acquisitions of attackers Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho.

Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan is trying to force through a move to Liverpool by going Awol from his club’s pre-season training camp in Austria, according to the Mirror.
The 24-year old failed to report for pre-season training this week which could be seen as a clear tactic to engineer a move to the Premier League. The midfielder is now facing a club fine.
The Armenian is said to have grown frustrated that his proposed £23 million move to Anfield has not gone through yet, after the deal was held up because Shakhtar do not own all of his rights.
He was set to fly out to Merseyside last week to undergo a medical before the complications arose, and remains keen on joining Brendan Rodgers side.
But Shakhtar are unimpressed with their player’s no-show and have warned he will be punished if he does not make an appearance.

Liverpool have confirmed the signing of Simon Mignolet from Sunderland in a £9 million deal, report the BBC.
The 25-year old passed a medical at the club yesterday and agreed personal terms on an undisclosed, long-term deal.
The Belgian international becomes Liverpool’s fourth summer signing following the acquisitions of Manchester City’s Kolo Toure, Sevilla’s Luis Alberto and Celta Vigo’s Iago Aspas.
Manager Brendan Rodgers said of the deal:
“I am delighted that we have been able to sign one of the top goalkeepers in the Barclays Premier League, Simon will join a club that will give him an opportunity to demonstrate and improve his huge talent.”
Mignolet joined Sunderland from Belgian side Sint-Truiden for just £2 million in June 2010.
But his market value has since sky-rocketed thanks to a series of fine performances in the Premier League recently, keeping 11 clean sheets in 40 matches last season for the Black Cats.

Liverpool look set to miss out on Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan after the Armenian rubbished speculation linking him to Anfield, according to the Express.
Reports have been away recently about the future of the 24-year-old attacking midfielder, and Liverpool were believed at one stage to be the front runners for his signature.
The Ukraine giants have already told Red’s manager Brendan Rodgers that his side would have to fork out £20 million for Mkhitaryan’s services and the Northern Irishman was keen on the player and of the prospect of the goals he’d bring to his side.
The Donetsk man scored 25 league goals in 28 appearances last season and Rodgers had hoped he’d help ease some of the goal-scoring burden currently being shouldered by Liverpool’s top scorer last season, Luis Suarez.

Liverpool have agreed a fee in excess of £11 million for the signing of Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Teamtalk reports tonight.
The two Premier League clubs have finally reached an agreement over the transfer of the 25-year-old Belgian international stopper after weeks of negotiations.
Mignolet will now travel to Merseyside next week to undergo a medical and talk over personal terms.
For Sunderland, the sale of Mignolet gives the Black Cats a profit of around £9 million after they signed him from Sint-Truiden for just £2 million three years ago. In his time at the club, Mignolet has been immense, getting better with every season and given his success in the Sunderland shirt and his massive profit, he must prove to be one of Sunderland’s best ever acquisitions.

Newly promoted Premier League side Cardiff are set to rival Liverpool for the signature of Blackpool winger Tom Ince, according to the Daily Mail.
The Bluebirds have agreed to meet Blackpool’s £8 million asking price for the young England international, who has featured for the Three Lions at U17, U19 and U21 levels.
The deal would include a guaranteed fee up front plus add-ons. However, Liverpool remain favourites to land the attacking midfielder, who is a product of their youth academy but was sold to Blackpool in 2011.
The Reds have an option to match any bid for the 21-year old under the terms of his move to The Tangerines two years ago.
They also have a 35% sell-on clause which means they could re-sign the youngster for an initial fee of just over £5 million.
Ince enjoyed an impressive campaign in the Championship last season playing under his father and ex-Liverpool player Paul,...

Liverpool’s extensive summer recruitment programme is set to continue, with the Merseyside club in advanced talks to sign Porto’s Christian Atsu, according to the Guardian.
The Reds have already signed defender Kolo Toure from Manchester City and have provisionally agreed a £7.6 million deal for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas, while Shakhtar Donetsk’s £22 million-rated midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Sevilla forward Luis Alberto are also believed to be on the way to Anfield.
But the spending won’t end there with manager Brendan Rodgers keen to bring in Porto’s promising winger Atsu, who is valued at just £3 million.
The Ghanaian is known as a quick and talented wideman but has at times put in some erratic performances. He was brought into the Porto first team by now-Spurs manager Andre Villas-Boas and is viewed by Rodgers as an individual who can offer his team more attacking width next season.

Liverpool are hoping to complete their double-swoop on La Liga by wrapping up the deal for Sevilla striker Luis Alberto, according to the Echo.
The Reds have already agreed a deal “in principle” for Celta Vigo striker Iago Aspas, 25, for £7.7 million and his move to Anfield will be complete once the necessary paperwork is filled in.
And now manager Brendan Rodgers is on the verge of completing his second summer signing after immediately turning his attentions to Alberto.
Liverpool have moved to the front of the que for the youngster’s services after Barcelona failed to take up the option to make his loan move permanent after he made 38 appearances for their B team last season.
That has paved the way for the Northern Irishman, who is a long-term admirer of the player, to make a £6 million move and bring him to Anfield.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers is plotting a £13 million raid on La Liga duo Luis Alberto and Iago Aspas, according to the Daily Star.
The Northern Irishman is determined to transform his Kop side into top four contenders and is hoping that signing the Sevilla striker, 20, and the Celta Vigo forward, 25, will help him do just that.
Alberto is expected to move from Sevilla in a £5 million deal while Aspas will complete his Anfield move in an £8 million transfer.
Aspas has even cancelled his holiday plans in order to ensure the deal goes through smoothly and Anfield sources are hoping an agreement with Celta Vigo can be reached shortly.
The Spaniard said:
“I have cancelled my holiday in the Caribbean.
“When I heard of Liverpool’s interest I did not hesitate.
“After all, they are one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“I have decided that my future is in English football.

After historically drawing a penalty shoot-out, and having the threat of a result decided by the age of the squad hanging over them, Newcastle United won the 12th Trofeu Internacional de Futebol do Guadiana tournament in Portugal tonight after seeing off Sporting Braga, who finished last season in third in the Portuguese league.
The Magpies showed some encouraging signs going forward in the first half, taking advantage of some occasionally calamitous Braga defending and a general lack of enthusiasm from their opponents in their own half , which saw a good chance for Papiss Cisse, whose eventual back-heel came to nothing. The Senegalese front-man then missed the best chance of the match so far, firing his effort over the bar after good work from Sammy Ameobi and Danny Simpson.
The few chances that fell to Braga in the first half were dealt with by imperious captain Fabricio Coloccini and Steve Harper in the Newcastle goal,...

I can’t say that the music on Dexter has ever particularly stood out to me. The musical scores do a great job of setting the tone for scenes, and I always expect to hear a Latin dance-friendly tune to be playing when the Pd has a bust to make at a Miami-area club. But the show doesn’t feature much popular, radio-type music because it really doesn’t lend itself to it — which is fine. That fact, however, was what led me to be perplexed when I read that star Michael C. Hall would be hitting the airwaves on...
