Richard Roxburgh, star of hit Netflix show “Rake” and “Elvis,” stars in “The Correspondent,” a fact-based thriller. He portrays Peter Greste, the veteran Australian TV news reporter who was arrested and detained in Cairo in 2013 while reporting for Al Jazeera.
Production of “The Correspondent” wrapped in Sydney, Australia after being directed by Kriv Stenders, who enjoyed major success in Australia with “Red Dog” and also directed hit “Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.”
The film is based on Greste’s memoir “The First Casualty” and has an adapted screenplay by Peter Duncan. Greste is an award-winning foreign correspondent who, along with two of his colleagues, was reporting on the Arab Spring uprising. Days into his assignment, he became a pawn in a deadly game of ancient rivalries. Surviving an inexplicable nightmare with only his wits keeping him alive, Greste was sentenced to seven years in jail, but was released...

Simone Ashley has picked the follow-up to her breakthrough performance as Kathani “Kate” Sharma in season 2 of the hit Netflix series Bridgerton, as Deadline reports that she has the lead role in the psychological thriller This Tempting Madness, which just wrapped production in Los Angeles.
The film marks the feature directorial debut of Jennifer E. Montgomery, who also wrote the screenplay with her husband Andrew M. Davis. Davis has a background in cinematography, including some work on the Sam Raimi-produced horror anthology series 50 States of Fright, so he lensed his wife’s first movie. Inspired by a true story, it sees Ashley taking on the role of a young woman who awakens from a coma grievously injured, memory fractured, her husband arrested. But as she puts together the pieces of her past, she starts to question her own actions — and her perception of reality.

Sony Pictures Classics has secured distribution rights to “Shayda,” which won the Audience Award at Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition last month.
The distributor holds all media rights in North America, Latin America, Benelux, Eastern Europe, Portugal, the Middle East, and Turkey.
Executive produced by Cate Blanchett’s Dirty Films, the first feature by writer-director Noora Niasari follows Shayda and her six-year-old daughter Mona, two Iranians living in Australia. After divorcing her husband Hossein, Shayda moves them into a women’s shelter, where she struggles to adjust to her new life while trying to create one for Mona. Encouraged by the start of the Persian New Year, Nowruz, to embrace her newfound freedom, Shayda is thrown off when Hossein wins visitation rights, raising the possibility that he’ll attempt to take his daughter back to Iran.

It’s a Sunday evening in London in early February and two-time Oscar winner Cate Blanchett is freshly changed from an award show when she logs onto a Zoom with Noora Niasari, the writer and director behind “Shayda,” the powerful Sundance award-winning film executive produced by Dirty Films, the production company co-founded by Blanchett.
“I’m so happy. It’s fantastic. It’s great for Todd [Field], it’s so great for the film,” Blanchett says as she fields congratulations on accepting the London Critics Circle’s best actress prize. “And I just read that Viola Davis became an Egot!”
The topic of awards is the conversation du jour this time of year because awards are capital in the entertainment business — and Blanchett knows a thing or two about this topic, with eight Oscar nominations to her name. Ultimately, the accolades help a film reach audiences far and wide. In the case of “Shayda,...

A few weeks after Zar Amir-Ebrahimi won the Best Actress Award in Cannes for her performance as journalist Arezoo Rahimi in crime thriller Holy Spider, the Iranian-French actor flew to Melbourne, Australia, to take part in what was set to be another urgent story from an Iranian filmmaker: Noora Niasari’s debut feature Shayda.
The film, which is described as a “love letter to mothers and daughters everywhere” and opened Sundance’s World Cinema Dramatic Competition last week, sees Amir-Ebrahimi star as Shayda, a brave Iranian mother who finds refuge in an Australian women’s shelter with her six-year-old daughter (played by Selina Zahednia) after fleeing an abusive relationship.
Based on Niasari’s own mother, who fled an arranged marriage to raise her daughter in Australia, Shayda takes place over the Persian New Year, when the mother-daughter duo take solace in Nowruz rituals and new beginnings but when her estranged husband reenters their lives,...

‘Shayda’ Review: Powerful Debut Feature Shines a Timely Light on an Iranian Woman’s Resilient Spirit
In resiliently fighting for their human rights and dignity, Iranian women were deservedly named Time magazine’s Heroes of the Year in 2022. Their fierce uprising erupted last fall, after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini was arrested by the morality police for not fully complying with the government’s antiquated dress code, and died three days later in police custody. Set in the ’90s in an Australian city, writer-director Noora Niasari’s quietly powerful “Shayda” doesn’t, on the surface, have a direct connection to these recent events. But one can’t help but detect the same strength and heroic spirit in the film’s eponymous protagonist, a young Iranian woman who demands a free life on her own terms, away from the shadow of her abusive husband, and the patriarchal norms and codes of conduct that suffocate her existence.

Within the unassuming exterior of a suburban house, the central setting in Shayda, a handful of women are working to reclaim their lives. The title character is one of them, determined to leave an abusive marriage with her young daughter and not return to their native Iran. Unfolding in 1995 Australia, Noora Niasari’s debut feature is drawn from her experiences as a child in such a shelter and is at its core a tribute to the writer-director’s mother. Fueling the drama is the quiet ferocity of Zar Amir Ebrahimi’s performance and her tender chemistry with Selina Zahednia as 6-year-old Mona.
Early scenes are thick with shadows, a sense of danger lurking. Four years earlier, Shayda moved to Australia with Hossein (Osamah Sami) and their toddler daughter so that he could attend medical school. A student too, she has stopped wearing the hijab and embraced the relative freedoms of a Western woman,...

The star presumably had one eye on the paycheque in this by-the-numbers thriller about a debt collector punching and shooting his way to bloody revenge
Antonio Banderas is a class act but there’s only so much class he can reasonably be expected to supply. Taking what was presumably an attractive paycheque, Banderas stars in a movie whose essential personality could only be appreciated if Blockbuster Video were to be brought back to life, just for one week, so this could be placed in the straight-to-video bin next to every till.

Not to be confused with the Clint Eastwood Enforcer (1976) or the Humphrey Bogart Enforcer (1951), this cheap and cheerful crime thriller stars Antonio Banderas as a strong-arm man who turns against his employers. As such, it’s entirely watchable and made with a degree of style, but it’s also predictably generic and occasionally laughable in its simplicity.
The Enforcer opens with one of those prologue sequences that immediately gives away the ending, as Banderas’ Cuda (short for Barracuda) reflects on what brought him to his current blood-soaked state. The rest of the story is then told in flashback, with Cuda taking new enforcer Stray under his wing, while working for slinky Miami mob boss Estelle.

Miami kingpin Estelle (Kate Bosworth) is looking for insurance. Not because she doesn’t trust her usual muscle Cuda (Antonio Banderas) anymore, but because she’s not sure how much time he has left in the tank let alone how well he’s going to adapt to a world running on online currency. Stuck in jail for a decade, his return is therefore just in time to train his replacement: a street fighter named Stray (Mojean Aria) who makes a living always battling above his weight class. The assumption is that he already has what it takes physically to handle himself when collecting Estelle’s taxes from the gangsters and lowlifes operating in her territory. So, if he learns even a fraction of Cuda’s patience and experience, he’ll turn out just fine.

“Tough guy with heart of gold” is the cliché that provides the gist to “The Enforcer,” and nothing much turns up to refresh or complicate that hoary hook. This criminal-underworld thriller benefits from Antonio Banderas’ star charisma as a veteran mob strong-arm who turns against his own organization in order to rescue an imperiled teen. Richard Hughes’ feature directorial debut also elevates matters somewhat with a slick and stylish presentation. But the results remain too hogtied by original “Point Break” scribe W. Peter Iliff’s routine, elemental screenplay to rise above the level of disposable genre fodder.
Cuda (Banderas) is just out of prison, having dutifully taken the heat for deeds done in service to Miami syndicate boss Estelle (Kate Bosworth). He hopes to restore relations with his 15-year-old daughter, but she’s wary after his long absence, his ex-wife outright hostile. Perhaps as a regretful result, he takes a...

"Those are some dangerous people." Screen Media Films has revealed an official trailer for a crime thriller from a first time filmmaker called The Enforcer, which is indeed about a mob enforcer. Truly an original name for this one. Miami's top mob enforcer Cuda, played by Antonio Banderas, sacrifices it all to tear down the criminal organization he's spent his whole life building up. He will give up everything to save a young girl he has befriended from his femme fatale boss who is involved in cybersex trafficking. It's his last chance to do something and make a difference before the mob comes after him. This definitely sounds like some derivative direct-to-vod junk, but somehow they got Banderas to star. The cast also includes Kate Bosworth, Mojean Aria, Zolee Griggs, and Alexis Ren, with 2 Chainz. This seems like yet another generic crime action film about rescuing young women. Same old story over and over.

Too bland to be offensive, writer-director Lisa Joy’s talky sci-fi neo-noir “Reminiscence” is as corny and plain as star Hugh Jackman’s voiceover narration, which includes such intriguing, but empty observations as “The past can haunt a man. That’s what they say. And the past is just a series of moments, each one perfect.”
That maxim does not prove to be accurate, as you might expect given who’s speaking: private eye Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman), who uses a science-fiction machine — part sensory deprivation tank, part virtual reality simulator — to help his clients relive their old memories. Nick has become obsessed with Mae (Rebecca Ferguson), a nightclub singer who suddenly disappears after she uses Nick’s memory-palace device. Unfortunately, there’s not much mystery in Mae’s vanishing act, especially given how neatly explained everything is through dialogue and/or carefully arranged master shots of handsome actors who appear engaged by,...
