- She became the first African American to serve as chief psychiatric nurse at the Dallas VA hospital; the first African American from Dallas to serve in the state Senate since Reconstruction; and the first registered nurse elected to Congress. Since no Texas nursing schools would accept a Black student at the time, she attended Saint Mary's College in Indiana. She studied psychiatric nursing at Texas Christian University, earning a bachelor's degree.
