AMC Theaters has partnered with Grindstone Entertainment and Roadside Attractions for an exclusive U.S. release of Uninterrupted’s documentary “Black Ice.” The film reveals a long history of racism in the hockey world as told by both past and Black hockey players. In a sport where only around 5% of professional players are Black, the documentary will give insight into the relationship between the sport and athletes of color.
“Black Ice” is directed by Hubert Davis and is executive produced by LeBron James, Maverick Carter, Drake and Adel “Future” Nur. The film premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival where it was the People’s Choice documentary winner. “Black Ice” will make its U.S. debut in AMC theaters starting July 14.
“People who love hockey will rejoice in this film’s message, which is that everyone must play by the same rules,” said Eric d’Arbeloff, Roadside Attractions co-president. “This extraordinary...

Stoked by raves and strong receptions to their world-premiering Toronto festival films, “Brother” producers Damon D’Oliveira and Clement Virgo, “Black Ice” producer Vinay Virmani, and “Alice, Darling” producer Noah Segal are warming up a new basketball-themed crime series, “The Count,” for this fall’s marketplace, Variety has learned.
A modern spin on French author Alexandre Dumas’ classic 19th-century novel of wrongful imprisonment “The Count of Monte Cristo,” the TV drama will bounce between Toronto’s basketball milieu and Haiti’s cultural mélange as it follows the transformation of a Haitian basketball player facing a life sentence for murder into to justice-seeking saboteur.
D’Oliveira and Virgo under their Conquering Lion Pictures company, The Good Karma Company’s chief content officer Virmani, and Elevation Pictures co-president Segal have signed on as executive producers on the series.

As Toronto director Clement Virgo and the cast of “Brother” took the stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre on the night of Sept. 9 to soak in the hometown standing ovation after film’s world premiere, a delegation of Black producers from across Canada was settling in for a week of networking ops curated by the Black Screen Office (Bso).
This year has seen Black-led CBC and BET+ historical drama series “The Porter” (recently renewed for Season two) connect with audiences and critical kudos beyond Canada; Black talent empowerment and training organizations extend their reach; and the Bso forge platforms and alliances to strengthen and amplify its advocacy, research and funding development work.
This is not simply a moment, say the Toronto filmmakers, it’s accelerated momentum.

Canadians have long defined themselves through the game of ice hockey, some more than others. Despite the NHL success of such Black Canadian players as Grant Fuhr, Tony McKegney, Devante Smith-Pelly, Wayne Simmonds, Darnell Nurse, Evander Kane and P.K. Subban, the nation’s winter pastime has remained a bastion of whiteness.
With the documentary Black Ice, screening at TIFF, executive producers Drake, LeBron James and Maverick Carter attempt to shine a light on the racial disparities that have plagued the sport for decades. The 97-minute film travels back and forth in time to chronicle the Colored Hockey League of the Maritimes, which was based in Nova Scotia and, from 1895 to 1925, essentially barred Black players from playing alongside whites.

Nearly a year after its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival, Anything is Possible – The Serge Ibaka Story will have its U.S. debut on Crackle on August 1.
The feature-length documentary about the Congolese NBA star was produced by Vinay Virmani at LeBron James’ Uninterrupted Canada along with Jordi Vilà and Ibaka’s Ouenzé Entertainment.
Ibaka, a power forward, played a key role on the Toronto Raptors’ championship team in 2019. In the Raptors’ upset NBA Finals victory over the Golden State Warriors, Kawhi Leonard won Mvp honors but Ibaka proved essential, especially in a 20-point performance on the road in Game 4.
In the film (check out a teaser above), Ibaka is shown returning to his birthplace, the Republic of Congo. Carrying the Larry O’Brien trophy won by the Raptors, he meets with local residents and tours the streets where he grew up. He reflects on the death of his...

Dr. Cabbie, Salman Khan’s first international offering that has Vinay Virmani (Breakway, David) in the lead has opened to good reviews on its Canadian release, what with current IMDb rating as 8/10. While the film would be seeing phased release internationally, a good response amongst audience in the country where it belongs to, Canada, is a heartening sign indeed for Salman and Vinay who have come together for an outing that picks up a socially relevant subject (migration of well educated Indians to Canada and the hardships they suffer) while presenting it in an out and out entertaining manner.
This is what the prominent critics have to say about the film.
“Dr. Cabbie has an appealing protagonist, some snappy dialogue and fun characters. The film also manages to be lighthearted, amusing and occasionally heartwarming… provides a pleasingly comical cinematic ride.” – The Star

It all started with a cab ride, fittingly enough. That's where "Dr. Cabbie" star, producer and co-writer Vinay Virmani happened to meet a Toronto taxi driver who used to be a surgeon in his native India, giving the young actor the seed for the idea that would eventually become his follow-up to the 2011 hit "Breakaway."
Directed by Quebec filmmaker Jean-François Pouliot in his first English-language project, the film stars Virmani as Deepak, a recent Indian med-school grad who immigrates to Canada only to find out that his degree isn't recognized. Forced to get a job as a cabbie, but still looking to follow in his late father's footsteps and put his medical training to good use, Deepak begins running a mobile clinic out of the back of his taxi, quickly becoming something of local hero.

The saga of Komagata Maru, the Japanese ship that sailed in 1914 to Vancouver with 376 passengers from Punjab, is finally going to be told on the large screen. We have it straight from Canada that the long-stranded project would be the first beneficiary of the joint film treaty signed by India and Canada on July 1. According to the Treaty, filmmakers from both countries would be at liberty to make films as and how they want in India and Canada with heavy tax and production subsidies. Komagata Maru has been a long-in-the-pipeline dream project involving huge monies and therefore prohibitive. Deepa Mehta was to direct the project initially with Amitabh Bachchan and Akshay Kumar in the lead. But now the project will be helmed by a top Hollywood director. Eros International has stepped in as the Indian producer for this ambitious epic drama. Confirming these details a source from Canada says, "Komagata Maru...

The flash decision to fly in Salman to Toronto post Kick was taken in a move to upstage the Toronto Film Festival which starts on September 4. Dr. Cabbie, directed by Jean-Francois Pouliet was to premier at the Toronto Film festival. But, with a clutter of Hindi films being screened at the Festival this year, the Toronto-based actor Vinay Virmani and his entrepreneur-dad Ajay Virmani have decided against screening Dr. Cabbie at the Festival. Instead, they have decided to steal the Indian thunder at the Toronto Film Festival by inviting Salman Khan, the official producer of Dr. Cabbie to Toronto just days before the film. While the details of Salman Khan's activities in Toronto during his 3-day visit are being kept a secret, it is reliably...

It's a story we've all heard before: a highly educated immigrant who can't get a job in Canada or the United States because their credentials don't transfer over. Now there's a new (and hilarious) movie about it.
"Dr. Cabbie," which was shot entirely in Toronto and stars Vinay Virmani ("Score: A Hockey Musical") and Kunal Nayyar ("The Big Bang Theory"), follows the frustrating journey of Deepak, who applies for jobs in Toronto but quickly realizes things aren't going as he planned.
Frustrated, he resorts to driving a taxi, which ends up being more lucrative than he imagined.
(Watch trailer, above.)
The movie opens in theatres across North America on September 19.

As they say, a start well made is a right indication of the destination. If the official trailer of Dr. Cabbie is any indication, the team is just on the right path to promise a good fun ride which is all set to be unveiled internationally this September. What also makes the film special is the fact that this is Salman Khan’s first international presentation, hence ensuring an all around visibility.
Though a teaser of the film was released a few weeks back, it is the full fledged official promo which conveys a lot more about what Dr. Cabbie has to offer. One can see that as a central protagonist (yet again after his debut international outing Breakaway (a.k.a. Speedy Singhs)), Vinay Virmani is in complete elements while displaying his boyish charm that made him noticeable in the acting world. As a youngster who gains a medical degree in India,...

Now this is a kind of marketing and promotional initiative that has perhaps never been seen before. Though time and again one hears actors visiting malls and other public places for the promotion of their films, especially in Bollywood, there is a different route being taken by Dr. Cabbie which is an international outing with a mix of India, Canadian and American cast. The film is also special since it sees the coming together of Salman Khan Being Human [Skbh] Productions, FirstTake Entertainment, Caramel Films and Eros International. Vinay Virmani [Breakaway, David] along with Isabelle Kaif [Katrina Kaif's sister] recently initiated a campaign of Jean-Francois Poulliot directed Dr. Cabbie by visiting multiple schools across the length and breadth of Canada. Slow and steady seems to be the course of Katrina Kaif's younger sister Isabel's career. She has been signed for the second lead opposite British Indian actor Kunal Nayyar in French director Jean-Francois Pouliot's Dr Cabbie. The film co-produced by Salman Khan, features Vinay Virmani who played one of the title roles in Bejoy Nambiar's undervalued David. The story goes that Salman wanted to cast Isabel opposite Virmani. But by the time the decision was taken to cast her, it was too late. Says a source close to the project, "The G I Joe actress Adriane Palicki had already been signed opposite Vinay. So Isabel stepped in to co-star with the film's second lead Kunal Nayyar who has worked in the hit British series The Big Bang Theory." Sources from Canada where the film is being shot say co-producer Salman Khan is taking a keen interest in the project and in Isabel's role.
