Chris Pratt has traded in his plumber uniform for something with a little more fur in the first trailer for Columbia Pictures and Alcon Entertainment’s The Garfield Movie.
The famous lasagna-loving cat is back with Pratt as the man behind the whiskers in this nearly three-minute look (below) at the movie based on Jim Davis’ famous Garfield comic series.
The film sees Garfield, “the world-famous, Monday-hating, lasagna-loving indoor cat,” setting out on a wild, outdoor adventure following an unexpected reunion with his long-lost father, a scruffy street cat named Vic who’s voiced by Samuel L. Jackson. With his canine friend Odie at his side, Garfield is forced from his perfectly pampered life into joining his father for a comedic, high-stakes heist.
The trailer teases a tail of an abandoned kitten fighting to survive on the streets until he sees Jon Arbuckle, a lonely man eating a pizza, through a restaurant window.

Chris Pratt’s plot to dominate the world of iconic characters continues in the wake of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” with the first trailer for “The Garfield Movie,” in which the “Guardians of the Galaxy” actor voices the titular gluttonous cat.
The trailer opens with something of a fake-out, as it sweetly chronicles the origin of Garfield and Andy’s relationship with the story of a lost little kitty cat who happens upon a lonely man at an Italian eatery. But soon after, shenanigans ensue, including those involving Garfield’s father Vic voiced by Samuel L. Jackson.
This is not the first time “Garfield” made the jump to the big screen. Bill Murray voiced the character in the 2004 film “Garfield: The Movie” and its sequel “A Tail of Two Kitties.”
The “Garfield” movie voice cast also includes Hannah Waddingham, Ving Rhames, Nichoulas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, Brett Goldstein and Bowen Yang.

Once upon a time, there existed these things called newspapers that showed up at your door in the morning. Inside were news stories about politics, sports, health, and movie listings. They also included comic strips, aka the funny pages. Though the newspaper has gone the way of the dodo, for the most part, some of these comic strip characters still live in our imagination. One of them is a big orange tabby cat named Garfield, who hates mornings and Mondays, loves lasagna, is terrified of spiders, and bullies his doggie housemate Odie.

The world’s most famous fat cat is coming to theaters soon. “Garfield,” an animated film starring Chris Pratt as the famous Jim Davis comic strip character, will premiere in theaters Feb. 16, 2024.
In addition to Pratt, the film will also star Samuel L. Jackson as a brand-new character to the Garfield universe, Vic, who is the father of the orange feline. The plot that will bring Garfield’s father back into his life remains under wraps. Although no other cast members have been announced, the film will presumably feature classic characters from the franchise, including his owner Jon Arbuckle and dim-witted puppy Odie.
The animated movie represents the latest big screen outing for the iconic lasagna-loving misanthrope. Bill Murray famously voiced the character in two live-action and CGI-hybrid films, 2004’s “Garfield: The Movie” and its 2006 sequel “Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties.” The two films received largely negative reviews, but were both commercially successful.

The debate between Kamala Harris and Mike Pence might not have been quite the unmitigated disaster of the Biden/Trump fracas of last week, but it’s still being referenced for all the wrong reasons. From Harris’ firm declarations of “Mr. Vice President, I’m speaking” in response to Pence’s attempted interruptions and her face mirroring the exasperation and veiled contempt of every woman who has ever had an entitled man talk down to her, to Pence’s bloodshot eye sparking questions about his health, little of what was actually debated is being talked about.
However, the most incongruous and commented-upon moment was a fly that landed on Pence’s head and remained there for two minutes, and now Saturday Night Live fans are calling for Jeff Goldblum to play the insect in a sketch.

The festival’s 50-strong film program will be available online across the U.K. while live events will be confined to London. The films will be free, though financial contributions will be encouraged, 28% of which will be donated to charitable causes.
Range will participate in a physical red carpet event for “Stardust” in London, and in-person activity will also include an out-of-competition gala screening of Akabane Hiroshi’s Japanese film “Twiceborn,” with both events taking place at London’s The May Fair hotel.

Musicianship was the theme of the evening for the second of Marty Stuart’s three Artist-in-Residence performances at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on Wednesday. Titled “Psychedelic Jam-Bo-Ree” and featuring a multi-generational cast of guests, the emphasis felt tilted slightly more “jam” than “psych,” with Stuart and his band the Fabulous Superlatives flexing their instrumental chops.
In a way, the show was akin to Stuart’s annual Late Night Jam, held each June at the Ryman Auditorium during Cma Fest. That show mirrors the format of an old radio program,...

In today’s films news roundup, “Lucy in the Sky” and “Villains” get release dates, “The Angry Birds 2” is moved up a day, Tony Todd gets a part and Art House Theater Day is set.
Release Dates
Fox Searchlight has set an awards-season release date of Oct. 4 for Natalie Portman’s astronaut drama “Lucy in the Sky.”
Noah Hawley helmed “Lucy in the Sky” in his directorial feature film debut. Portman stars as an astronaut who returns to Earth after an extended time is space and begins an obsessive affair with a fellow astronaut, played by Jon Hamm. The plot is loosely based on the true story of Nasa astronaut Lisa Nowak, who was arrested in 2007 for the attempted murder of fellow astronaut Colleen Shipman, who was romantically involved with astronaut William Oefelein.
The film, formerly called “Pale Blue Dot,” also stars Dan Stevens — as the husband of Portman’s...

Earlier this month the wonderful James Kleinmann sat down with stars Sterling K. Brown, Jason Sudeikis, Rachel Bloom and Producer John Cohen to talk about their new movie, Angry Birds 2. That a sequel has been rushed into cinemas should come as no surprise, as the first movie took advantage of the many millions of people familiar with the mobile app series, and made almost $300million more than its budget. Now, in this new film we have old friends and new going about their business – and the film has something special in that its official synopsis offers us almost nothing at all. To wit: The flightless birds and scheming green pigs take their beef to the next level.
The iOS and Android mobile game caused a sensation with millions of birds flung and pigs crushed. This is the second movie based on Rovio’s multimedia franchise and features the voices of Jason Sudeikis,...

We were fortunate enough to be at a very early screening of The Angry Birds Movie 2, which felt somewhat odd. Usually in this industry, big animations of this nature screen nearer release, which got us thinking – why is this sequel being ranted a different treatment? And then we saw the film, and laughed solidly for 90 minutes, realising that the studio’s decision to screen this early is built on a well-placed confidence – for this caper is as funny as any film we’ve seen this year.
To celebrate its release we sat down with the producer John Cohen (Despicable Me) to discuss this hilarious new film. Cohen tells us what it is about the app that they always felt would translate well to screen, and whether we may see a third production. Lastly he talks about the upcoming Garfield movie that he’s working on.

The Angry Birds Movie 2 took a flying leap off the Carlton Hotel pier here in Cannes today as part of Sony’s now annual pre-fest promotional stunt to launch a summer title. At the same time, a new scene from the Sony Pictures Animation/Rovio Entertainment sequel was released online.
In Cannes, the irked birds and scheming green piggies banded together this afternoon to fling a stuffed hatchling from the dock using the birds’ signature slingshot. The stunt echoes the themes of the film which sees a new threat emerge that puts both Bird and Pig Island in danger and forces the foes to unite against a common enemy. A giant stuffed toy bird was catapulted from a Cannes beachfront pier Monday as Sony used its now traditional pre-festival slot to generate buzz for its new film “The Angry Birds Movie 2.” New footage from the movie dropped right after the stunt.
The first picture made more than $540 million internationally. Voice talent including Josh Gad turned out in Cannes alongside costumed characters as international press – and bemused Cannes sunbathers – looked on for the sequel stunt.
In the new picture, the birds and pigs unite against a common foe, but there is friction between them. “They do not get along, they don’t trust each other,” producer John Cohen told Variety. “It’s not unlike when the Avengers came together for the first time. There are a lot of trust issues.”
The voice cast includes Bill Hader, Awkwafina, Peter Dinklage, and Nicki Minaj.

Exclusive: After hatching a promotional niche with The Angry Birds Movie on the eve of the Cannes Film Festival in 2016, Sony will be back on the Croisette next week to launch the global campaign for its sequel, The Angry Birds Movie 2.
Taking place on Monday, this year’s stunt is the latest in a savvy move Sony began with the first film (which went on to gross $352 million worldwide) and has continued since as a means to stake out prime real estate a day ahead of the fest’s official opening. The strategy is to hit during a lull in which the entertainment media is on the ground prepping for the main event — and looking for photo ops.

These days the one genre that rules the box office consistently are animated family films (even more than super hero flicks). John Cohen came from projects like Ice Age and Despicable Me to convert the smash phone game, Angry Birds, into an even bigger movie hit. He talks about that journey plus his love for animation in general. Plus Mark Geist was among the brave men who lived the real life story of Michael Bay’s film, 13 Hours:the Secret Soldiers Of Benghazi . We find out what really happened that dark night in 2012.

Don't expect Bill Murray this time, but do expect a brand new series of Garfield movies...
The best thing about the two Garfield movies that we’ve seen to date? That’d arguably be Bill Murray’s anecdotes about how he got involved in voicing cartoonist Jim Davis’ most famous creation. Murray, goes the story, agreed to voice the cat in the CG/live action hybrid movies when he confused screenwriter Joel Cohen (Cheaper By The Dozen, Daddy Day Camp) with Oscar-winning writer/director Joel Coen (No Country For Old Men, Fargo).Whether you fully believe Murray’s anecdote or not, it was arguably more memorable than anything that happened in the two Garfield films.
Now there’s a new Garfield movie that’s gone into the works, and it’s probably fair to say that Murray won’t be involved this time. The rights have been...

Crack out the lasagna; The Hollywood Reporter brings words that a Garfield animated movie has found a home at Alcon Entertainment, the studio currently presiding over Denis Villeneuve’s long-gestating sequel, Blade Runner 2.
Circling back to the strip-based comic that first made its bow back in 1978, before shooting to success throughout the ’80s, THR notes that Alcon has struck a deal with Jim Davis – creative mind behind the rotund feline – who will serve as executive producer on the finished movie. It’s understood Alcon is eyeing a bona fide series of CG films based around the endearing and indeed conniving cat, along with his adventures with Jon Arbuckle and Odie, the clueless dog that fast become an easy form of entertainment for the mischievous Garfield.
Of course, Garfield has made a pass at the big screen before, most notably with Peter Hewitt’s live-action movie that had The Jungle Book...

Alcon Entertainment has secured exclusive rights to produce a new fully CG-animated feature based on the comic strip "Garfield" which would likely be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The Garfield comic strip debuted in 1978 and follows a cynical and lazy orange cat and his interactions with owner Jon Arbuckle and fellow pet Odie, a dog. Garfield currently holds the record for being the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world with an estimated readership of 260 million.
The company acquired the rights from Jim Davis, creator of the Garfield comic series, who will also serve as an executive producer. Alcon's Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove along with Steven P. Wegner and "Despicable Me" series producer John Cohen will all produce.

In the 3D animated comedy, The Angry Birds Movie, we’ll finally find out why the birds are so angry.
The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to.
Featuring a hilarious, all-star voice cast that includes Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids, Sisters), Bill Hader (Trainwreck, Inside Out), and Peter Dinklage (“Game of Thrones”), as well as Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live,” Ghostbusters), Sean Penn (Milk, Mystic River), Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development...

The latest trailer for The Angry Birds Movie doesn't contain very much new footage, so my opinion of it hasn't changed very much since the last trailer finally made me understand why the film exists. The biggest revelation for me was in the credits at the very end: I knew that Jason Sudeikis, Bill Hader, Maya Rudolph, and Patton Oswalt were in the film, but Sean Penn? I had no clue he was in this! I must have completely missed that announcement. (So did his IMDb page, apparently.)
The Angry Birds Movie hits theaters on May 20th.

Is the Easter Bunny a girl or boy? The Hatchlings may have the answer. In this exclusive video, the adorable baby birds from The Angry Birds Movie, who charmed you with their rendition of "Deck the Halls," return to spread some Easter cheer - and of course, it's just as hilarious as you'd expect. This time around, the producers asked the young children voicing the birds to sing an Easter classic, but unfortunately, none of them knew any Easter carols. "We suggested they share their favorite Easter memories instead," producer John Cohen tells People. "We didn't expect the memories to be this weird.
