Following the news that LCD Soundsystem will indeed headline Coachella, coming out of retirement after just five years, fans have expressed mixed feelings. Some are elated to have them back, while others feel the motives behind the band's reunion (including reports that they're doing it for the money) are disingenuous. Now front man and Mta savior James Murphy has taken to the band's site to address fans' concerns in an extended open letter, while also announcing that the band plan to release a new album this year. "I was fully prepared for a certain amount of 'oh fuck that guy' over-it stuff — in fact welcomed it. It’s strangely energizing to have people who don’t make music themselves take potshots at you from the internet," he writes. "If you cared a lot about our band, and you put a lot of yourself into that moment (or anything about us...

It's happening: The New York Times has finally confirmed that Guns N' Roses — or at least some version of them featuring Axl Rose and Slash — and LCD Soundsystem will both reunite at Coachella next year. Rumors that Axl and Slash have reconciled and that a reunion tour is imminent have been flying for about a week, and now the Times says Axl will announce the news on Kimmel next week. Axl and Slash have not played together since their falling out in the early '90s, but are now expected to headline the festival that specializes in nostalgia. LCD Soundsystem, who've previously denied a reunion, are also set to get back together (despite that farewell-tour hype), but it's unclear whether they'll headline. James Murphy and co. famously documented what was supposedly their "final" show back in 2011, but they reignited reunion rumors last week with a new Christmas song. Coachella...

Here’s hoping this becomes a new tradition — surprise releases from great bands that are actually pretty good! Arcade Fire and James Murphy work on the intricacies of "Afterlife" in the latest preview of the band's upcoming documentary, The Reflektor Tapes, which chronicles the making of their last album, Reflektor, and subsequent world tour.

For many New Yorkers, the subway is like the ninth circle of hell. On a bad day, it's a glorified rat tunnel. On a good day, it gets you to work on time. Erstwhile LCD Soundsystem front man James Murphy is out to prove otherwise with his Subway Symphony project, which aims to upend the way cranky New Yorkers experience their commute by transforming turnstiles into music machines that play a single sonorous tone — one of several chosen in a probability system — every time they rotate. “It’s the rare idea of mine that's actually not born out of complaint,” he tells me, adding, “I love the subway.” There's not a hint of irony in his face as we sit in front of a few Subway Symphony turnstile prototypes at Milk Studios in Chelsea. “I loved it when it was cleaned up. ★★★★☆ In LCD Soundsystem's Losing My Edge, James Murphy charts the history of alternative music and places himself at every key scene along the way ("I was there at the first Suicide practices in a loft in New York City") as a consolation for behind left behind by a scene in which he's no longer the nucleus. It's a hymn to the Almost Men of the arts in the twentieth century; the artists obsessed by the history of their media, but creatively daunted by the pedestal on which they placed it. Peter Bogdanovich was New Hollywood's almost man; the movement's chief cinephile, he understood cinema like few of the other "Movie Brats" (with the exception of Martin Scorsese, perhaps).

Though she’ll be venturing to the small screen for HBO’s adaptation of Big Little Lies, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman is simultaneously lining up some very promising gigs in Hollywood. It's the end of the day. Most of you have probably already slipped into your best sexy Olaf costumes by now, but for those of you near a computer, here's a special treat: a short horror film from Arcade Fire called Festi. The 20-minute short follows Will Butler on his 27th birthday, centering on the "27 Club Curse." What should be a fun, celebratory day takes an eerie turn. The band's standout orchestral violins, for instance, are much more reminiscent of Psycho than Funeral. Be sure to keep an eye out for special appearances by Peter Gabriel, Slash, James Murphy, and more.

Before you head out to whatever spooky event you have planned tonight, Arcade Fire have a little treat to share. The band, having wrapped their massive world tour for Reflektor, aren't done sharing a few more goodies with fans. And a pretty nice one landed today. The Montreal-based band dropped "Festi," a 20-minute horror short. It's a gleefully bonkers, lo-fi production, starring the band, that centers around Win Butler's 27th birthday and bunch of scary, wacky stuff that happens. Perhaps more notable than the "plot," is the brace of faces that pop by, including Peter Gabriel, Slash, The National, Fleet Foxes, James Murphy, and Andrew Garfield. And oh, Terrence Malick gets a special thanks. Halloween treats don't get much more endearingly random this, so square away some time and click below. [Pitchfork]...

Recording an album is tough, but after 20 years of producing music, the most difficult aspect may be keeping the process fresh. The Foo Fighters took that concept to a new level while creating their latest album, due out in November-they toured the United States, recording each song in a different city, hoping that the music scene of the area would influence the track. But Dave Grohl didn't just want to record Sonic Highways-he decided to document the experience, interviewing figures important to each city's musical history for a documentary series that shares the album's name. In turn, those interviews shaped the album,...

Disney's Frozen has surpassed Pixar's Toy Story 3 to claim the honor of highest grossing animated film of all time. But even though the animated musical has left all of Pixar's heralded features in the dust in the race to box office supremacy, that doesn't mean the animation studio is in a rush to imitate. While there could be a musical in Pixar's future, it won't come from a desire to ride Frozen's coattails. Speaking with Movies.com, Pixar animator James Murphy gave some insight into how the company picks its feature projects. Asked specifically if a musical is in the cards for Pixar's upcoming slate, Murphy responded: "What.s great about Pixar is there is no voice guiding them on what to do next. Pixar is a director-driven studio, and they put their money into individuals with ideas. And if an individual comes up with an idea that deserves...

On Sunday this week, Arcade Fire's breakout debut album "Funeral" turned 10 years old. A day after, frontman Win Butler went on Canadian sports talk radio show Melnick In The Afternoon, to discuss his Sept. 20 charity basketball game Pop Vs. Former LCD Soundsystem leader James Murphy is scheduled to DJ the game, so the show host Mitch Melnick asked if Butler, 34, had plans like Murphy to "retire" at 40. "I never want to put out something that’s not great. This last tour we did is the best, it’s the best shows we’ve ever played, so I feel like we’re kind of right in our prime right now — so I’m not really thinking about retirement yet ’cause we’re kind of like firing on all cylinders at this point,” Butler said. Thursday night at the Directors Guild, Pixar provided the same sneak peek of Pete Docter's '"nside Out" that was presented at the Annecy festival last week, except we were also treated to the first screening of the short that will play in front of it (next year to the day): the lovely Hawaiian-themed "Lava" musical directed by animator James Murphy. The two fit really well together emotionally and visually, but I believe "Inside Out" has the potential to be Pixar's most profound movie in its exploration of how the mind works metaphorically. "Inside Out" is about the difficulty of adolescence, when sadness replaces joy. In fact, Docter explained that the inspiration came from his own daughter Elie (who provided the voice of young Ellie in "Up"). He couldn't figure out why she was so sad and had lost that wonderful sense of joy. So being an inside/out kind of artist,...

R&B singer Frank Ocean, producer Diplo and the Clash’s guitarist Mick Jones and bassist Paul Simonon have combined their various talents into a new track for Converse's "Three Artists, One Song" series. Diplo famously sampled the Clash’s song "Straight to Hell" for M.I.A.’s 2007 hit "Paper Planes." "For me, the Clash represented really unexpected things with a garage attitude, so that’s where I was going with 'Hero,'" Diplo said. Ocean’s first new song in two years, "Hero" gains a heavy dose of soul from his vocals, which seamlessly blend with Diplo’s dub and electronic samples and the Clash’s dirty guitar riffs. In 1991, Nirvana exploded with Nevermind, instantly changing the musical landscape and ushering "alternative" music into the mainstream. Their influence was immediate and undeniable, but that year, another band would release an album that would also have a lasting impression on a new generation of musicians. Four young lads from Louisville, Kentucky known as Slint quietly dropped their final album Spiderland, but in the two decades since, it has grown into one of the most post-rock albums of all time. And now, the story of the band and those songs is being told. Having started his directing career overseeing pop videos, it's clear that music is still an integral part of how Spike Jonze works as a film director. Spike Jonze's Her was one of my favorite movies of the year, and it happened to get nominated for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay at the Academy Awards! That movie was just so well-written, and I think that it deals with a story and subject matter that a lot of people can relate too.

The topicality of Spike Jonze's Oscar-nominated film "Her" has quickly turned into a much wider conversation about the issue of human existence and its increasing connection to technology. The Creators Project has therefore decided to present "Her: Love in the Modern Age," a short documentary directed by Lance Bangs featuring interviews from the likes of Olivia Wilde, James Murphy and Bret Easton Ellis, among countless other artists, to shed some light on both the film and the themes it depicts. With questions about what love means today versus the preconceptions derived from simpler times, the video offers insightful yet ultimately ambiguous answers regarding our relationships with one another and their struggle with -- and dependence on -- our relationship with technology. Spike Jonze's "Her" is a futuristic love story about a lonely man (Joaquin Phoenix) who slowly finds solace and romance through his unusual relationship with an artificially intelligent.

Lance Bangs' documentary "Her: Love In The Modern Age" is finally here, and running 15 minutes long, it's a perfect lunch break watch. The project finds Spike Jonze's friend and collaborator documenting reactions from writers, musicians, actors and more to "Her," the ideas in it about love and much more. Olivia Wilde, James Murphy, Brett Easton Ellis, Charlyne Yi and many others are among the participants in this charming little package of a doc, some opening up quite deeply about their relationships, falling in love and more. And there is something kind of fitting about watching a bunch of strangers in a YouTube video share their opinions on a movie about technology and how find fulfillment in an age where personal interaction isn't necessarily a necessity.

Daniel Craig and a starry cast get the tone completely wrong in this rendition of Pinter's great play about a seven-year affair
Mike Nichols and his cast get so much wrong in the Broadway revival of Harold Pinter's Betrayal (1978), let's start with what goes right. It's a handsome physical production, with large, well-appointed interiors by Ian MacNeil wafting in and out to composer James Murphy's moody noodling and glowing with Brian MacDevitt's evocative lighting. Daniel Craig shucks off his 007 persona to become Robert, a successful book publisher whose wife, Emma (Rachel Weisz) conducts a seven-year affair with Robert's friend Jerry (Rafe Spall), a literary agent. The compact, rugged Craig hasn't shrunken from years behind the camera: he projects himself fully and muscularly to the back stalls. Craig even enlivened vastly inferior material when last he was on the Great White Way,...
Daniel Craig and a starry cast get the tone completely wrong in this rendition of Pinter's great play about a seven-year affair
Mike Nichols and his cast get so much wrong in the Broadway revival of Harold Pinter's Betrayal (1978), let's start with what goes right. Although they were still releasing new promos as recently as few hours ago, Arcade Fire has decided to leak their highly-anticipated new album "Reflektor" a few days ahead of schedule. Yep, you can hear it right here, right now. The album -- co-produced by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy and featuring the David Bowie as a guest vocalist -- was originally tipped to be streaming on NPR this coming Monday. Sorry, NPR -- "Reflektor" belongs to the world now. Although one of the album's lyrics is "Do you like rock and roll music/cuz I dunno if I do," "Reflektor" features plenty of guitar rock, alongside synthy dance...

Just in case you somehow missed that Arcade Fire is releasing a new album imminently, the sprawling Canadian band wants to scare the truth into you. Af has just released a short promo titled "Breaking Glass" that's spooky and just in time for Halloween. It's the latest of several promos for the album that features production by LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy. The new 30-second clip finds Af frontman Win Butler and his merry band dressed in Halloween duds, including some sleek face paint. Although they're clearly performing forward, the song is played backwards over the soundtrack. It's possibly a new, unheard song, but we may have...

Chopping and screwing a track of applause is nothing new -- and James Murphy re-titles his remix to David Bowie's "Lost Is Lost" as such. The former LCD Soundsystem frontman tips his hat to composer Steve Reich and his "Clapping Music" in this dark dance redux. The result of the "Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy For The Dfa" is something spirited and menacing, with a wry smile as you put your hands together. Bowie's lamentations reside in caverns of reverb next to rhythmic sythesizers, the clapping ultimately dying out after a dramatic chorus and then 5 more minutes of music....

It’s getting cold. It’s getting wet. In the words of Winterfell’s House Stark – winter is coming. But it really ain’t all that bad when you have a new Arcade Fire album on the way.
Montreal’s finest indie-rock outfit Arcade Fire are back, and they recently delivered the title track and lead single from their new album Reflektor – a sprawling, swirling, gradually escalating disco-infused monster. None other than Mr David bloody Bowie contributes eerie-sounding backing vocals to the track, whilst ex-LCD Soundsystem maestro James Murphy helms production…
The seven-minute epic continues themes explored on their 2010 masterpiece The Suburbs, an album loosely based around the idea of a search for the notion of home in ever-shrinking world. The track’s central premise is that, in our Gif-saturated technology-driven times, art – especially digital media – is just a reflection… a pale echo of a purer sound.

Arcade Fire have finally lifted the veil on their new single "Reflektor" which -- if you're any fan of their more dance-happy, disco-laden songs like "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains)" and "Half Light II (No Celebration)" from their last album "The Suburbs" -- will make you pretty happy. It's more than seven minutes of what most definitely sounds like one of their collaborations with LCD Soundsystem's James Murphy, who co-produced the new album. This title track additionally gets the enhancement of two new music videos, one standard directed by Anton Corbijn and one interactive through some geniuses at Google Chrome with director Vincent Morisset....

The first trailer for the long-gestating RoboCop reboot has arrived. The film, from director Jose Padilha, stars Joel Kinnaman as police officer Alex James Murphy, who is turned into a mostly machine crime fighter after being injured by a car bomb. Unlike in the 1987 Paul Verhoeven original, Murphy is still alive when he's turned into RoboCop, though he's suffered burns over 85 percent of his body. In addition to RoboCop blowing stuff up and fighting crime, the trailer also shows him interacting with his wife (Abbie Cornish) and son (David Murphy), and features plenty of co-stars (Michael

In 2011, everyone who knew Bryce Dallas Howard the actress was introduced to Bryce Dallas Howard the director thanks to Canon’s “Long Live Imagination” campaign. Howard’s father Ron (one of the country’s most famous narrators) also played a role in Canon’s project, selecting eight photos out of over 100,000 consumer submitted pics for Ms. Howard to use as inspiration for a short film. The result was when you find me, following up her debut Orchids. The experience for Howard was good enough that she’s returned for yet another round of Canon’s project and even though she’s not behind one of the films this year, she’s working with the likes of Jamie Foxx, Eva Longoria, Biz Stone, Georgina Chapman, and James Murphy. Like Howard did almost two years ago, they’re all making shorts out of submitted photographs, but you can join that bunch by making your own. If...
