At the beginning of Act Two of “Merrily We Roll Along,” Jonathan Groff, Daniel Radcliffe, Lindsay Mendez and other ensemble members sing “It’s A Hit!,” celebrating the successful opening of characters Charlie and Frank’s first Broadway musical. Indeed, one could say the same about this revival of “Merrily,” not just because of its smash box office receipts, but also because of the seven Tony Awards nominations that it received on April 30. This recognition from New York theatre’s highest honor is a true redemption for the show, whose original production was a notorious flop for composer Stephen Sondheim and director Hal Prince that ran only 16 regular performances and earned only a single bid for Sondheim’s original score. But how does this production’s Tony success compare to other recent revivals of the late composer’s works?

Since their inception, the directing categories at the Tony Awards have mostly been a boys’ club. Not only are the vast majority of winners men, but so are most of the nominees. But the 2024 ceremony could upend these statistics as more women are helming Broadway shows than ever before. This could finally be the year where they make up the majority of directing nominees.
This season there are 13 women directors on Broadway. Four of them will contend for Best Director of a Play: Lila Neugebauer (“Appropriate” and “Uncle Vanya”), Anne Kauffman (“Mary Jane”), Tina Landau (“Mother Play”), and Whitney White (“Jaja’s African Hair Braiding”). Another nine women will vie for Best Director of a Musical: Sammi Canold (“How to Dance in Ohio”), Rachel Chavkin (“Lempicka”), Rebecca Frecknall (“Cabaret”), Maria Friedman (“Merrily We Roll Along“), Mari Madrid, Leigh Silverman (“Suffs”), Jessica Stone (“Water for Elephants”), Danya Taymor (“The Outsiders”), and...

In 2022, Marianne Elliott won the Tony Award for directing a revival of the Stephen Sondheim musical “Company.” In her speech, she thanked the late composer for trusting her to put a “woman front and center” in her gender-bent production. Indeed, her victory was a major milestone for female directors. She became the first woman to win three times for directing. It was also the first time a woman took home a Tony for helming a Sondheim musical, and just the fifth instance of a woman winning for directing a tuner.
At the upcoming 2024 Tonys, Maria Friedman could accomplish those latter two feats, too. She is the visionary performer-turned-director who has achieved what would have been unfathomable to theatergoers back in 1981 — making the Sondheim and George Furth musical “Merrily We Roll Along” a hit on Broadway. But she definitely has a “good thing going” with her production of the notorious flop,...

Stephen Sondheim has almost never been more popular than in the two years since his passing in November 2021. In that time, celebrated revivals of “Company,” “Into the Woods,” and “Sweeney Todd” have come to Broadway, and successful remounting of “Assassins” and “Merrily We Roll Along” have played Off-Broadway, which is a testament to the enduring appeal of his works.
This fall will once again spotlight Sondheim. The tremendously successful Off-Broadway run of “Merrily” starring Jonathan Groff, Lindsay Mendez, and Daniel Radcliffe opens on Broadway on October 10, which will mark the first remounting since its original, unsuccessful run in 1981. In addition, his final musical “Here We Are,” which is based on two Luis Buñuel films—“The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel”—will have its highly-anticipated world premiere Off-Broadway, opening on October 22.

AFC Richmond brought some of its top players and an esteemed journalist to the Monte-Carlo Television Festival after the soccer team at the heart of Apple TV+ series “Ted Lasso” concluded its final season.
Kola Bokinni, Billy Harris, Cristo Fernandez and James Lance bid a fond farewell to the show in Monaco. But is it truly good-bye? When asked about it, Harris replied: “We’re still pretty much together. We were in L.A. last week, and now we’re in Monte-Carlo. I suppose we’re enjoying the fruits of our labor.” Lance chimed in, saying: “The show may be over, but we’re just getting started, aren’t we? We’re still here, having a great time.”
When it comes to those hoping for a fourth season, Lance said: “There’s always hope.” His co-stars echoed together, “Believe,” the rallying cry that their manager, Ted Lasso, instilled in the team.

With the last two years of showbiz awards being very erratic, 2022 seemed to be the first year in a while where everything was back to normal, or at least the closest thing to it. In the midst of a still ongoing pandemic, we managed to get a full slate of entertainment awards ceremonies and, with that, an entire slate of amazing moments that would define the year. Below, 15 of our site’s editors and contributors explain which moments were the best for them.
Many of these moments came from specific wins. Matthew Stewart was incredibly moved by Troy Kotsur’s Best Supporting Actor win at the Oscars. Daniel Montgomery loved “Squid Game” getting rewarded at this year’s Emmys and bringing attention to international productions. David Buchanan was over the moon when the recent revival of “Company” won five Tony Awards only seven months after the passing of the show’s composer,...

So, here’s the good news. Martha Plimpton has packed up her home in New York to live and work in London. Pooches to follow.
Her first gig? Playing Jacque in Shakespeare’s As You Like It on the stage of @sohoplace, the West End’s first purpose-built theatre in half a century. That Plimpton should deliver, with aplomb, the ‘All the world’s a stage’ monologue in Josie Rourke’s lively festive production, seems wholly appropriate because the same viewpoint applies elsewhere in town.

Exclusive: Sam Mendes, the Oscar and Tony award-winning director, has chosen three London theater stars — Michael Balogun (National Theatre Live: Death of England-Delroy), Hadley Fraser (Donmar Theatre’s Coriolanus), and Nigel Lindsay (Chichester Festival Theatre’s Woman In Mind) — to bring his much-garlanded production of The Lehman Trilogy back into the West End. That’s following triumphant runs at the UK’s National Theatre, the Park Avenue Armory and Broadway, and a phenomenal 16-week, sold-out run at London’s Piccadilly Theatre in 2019.
The actors will portray the Bavarian-born Lehman brothers, Emanuel, Mayer, and Henry, who settled in Alabama as cotton merchants, a springboard to what was to become what Balogun termed “a giant machine” on Wall Street. Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley, and Ben Miles originally performed the multiple roles of the Lehman brothers and their descendants — male and female, old and young — in London and New York.

Attention must be paid to the latest revival of Arthur Miller’s classic American family drama “Death of a Salesman,” which opened on Broadway at the Hudson Theatre on Oct. 9. Wendell Pierce takes on the formidable role of the salesman Willy Loman, and last-year’s Tony nominee Sharon D Clarke joins him as Willy’s wife Linda. Unlike any prior production of the show on Broadway, this Loman family is portrayed by Black actors.
Director Miranda Cromwell helms this “Salesman,” which originated in the UK. That production was co-directed by Marianne Elliott — who just won a Tony this year for her revival of “Company” — and earned five Olivier Award nominations in 2020, winning for director and actress for Clarke. Stateside, the Loman family is rounded out by André De Shields as Willy’s brother Ben, and Khris Davis and McKinley Belcher III as Willy’s sons Biff and Happy.

Exclusive Ozark actor McKinley Belcher III will join the cast of Broadway’s upcoming Death of a Salesman revival starring Wendell Pierce and Sharon D Clarke this fall, producers announced today.
Belcher will play Happy Loman, son of Willy (Pierce) and Linda (Clarke) Loman. The revival begins previews September 19 at the Hudson Theatre for a strictly limited 17-week engagement. Marianne Elliott prevailed in a tough Tony race — Best Director of a Musical — winning for her gender-swapped update to Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” This victory means far more than just another trophy on her shelf: with this win, Elliott is now the winningest female director in Tony Awards history.
“Company” marks Elliott’s third win for helming. A Strange Loop was named Best Musical of the 2021-22 Broadway season, and in two of the bigger surprises of the night, Joaquina Kalukango of Paradise Square and newcomer Myles Frost of Mj took best acting honors.
In the first big surprise of the night, Kalukango won the Best Actress in a Musical Tony Award for her performance in Paradise Square, edging out frontrunner Caroline, Or Change star Sharon D Clarke. Frost, who portrays the adult Michael Jackson in Mj, was less of a surprise, though A Strange Loop‘s Jaquel Spivey was generally favored to take the prize.

Lin-Manuel Miranda and Bernadette Peters paid tribute to the late, legendary composer Stephen Sondheim at the Tony Awards Sunday.
Miranda, a mentee of Sondheim’s, referenced the composer’s frequent outreach and guidance to those in the theater community. This has been illustrated through the many detailed letters Sondheim sent to fans and collaborators, which have posthumously resurfaced on Instagram.
“Steve touched our lives in a multitude of ways through his immortal music and lyrics, through his teaching and advocacy for young writers and through letters,” Miranda said. “Stephen wrote them to friends, to up-and-coming artists, to countless people he’d never met. He wrote so many letters that you’d wonder when he had time to pick up a Blackwing 602 pencil and write a song. I stand here on behalf of generations of artists he took the time to encourage.”

The Covid safety managers, stage managers, cast and crews that kept Broadway productions going during the 2021-2022 season were among those honored during the 2022 Tony Awards, held Sunday night at Radio City Music Hall.
During the ceremony one of the biggest nods to the pandemic-affected season, which began with theaters reopening in 2021 after being dark for more than a year, was during Skylar Astin and Marcia Gay Harden’s presentation of the featured actress in a play award when Covid safety managers were shouted out and thunderously cheered by the Tonys audience.
“It took the entire community to bring Broadway back, to welcome almost 7 million theater goers to a shortened season,” Harden said. “The Broadway League celebrates the crucial role played by the Covid safety managers. One hundred and fifty are here tonight as guests of the Tonys.”

After almost five decades on the Broadway stage, Patti LuPone has won her third Tony Award for her featured performance in director Marianne Elliott’s revival of Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” She takes on the role of Joanne, originated and made famous by Elaine Stritch, whose rousing number “The Ladies Who Lunch” is one of the most famous in the American theatrical canon.
LuPone has performed the number on numerous occasions in the past decade. At Sondheim’s 80th birthday concert, she belted out the song while sharing a stage with Stritch herself, and she later played Joanne in a New York Philharmonic concert production of “Company” starring Neil Patrick Harris as Bobby; this production has reinvented the show with a female Bobbie at its center, played by Katrina Lenk. After swearing off performing in another musical after “War Paint” in 2017 due to how physically taxing they are, Elliott persuaded...

“Nothing is impossible,” remarked Patti LuPone in 1980 just moments after receiving the Tony Award for her performance in “Evita.” The role transformed the actress into a Broadway sensation, and now 42 years later she could pick up the third Tony of her career for her featured performance in “Company,” a revival of Stephen Sondheim’s momentous 1970 musical that reimagines the show with a woman at its center — Katrina Lenk‘s Bobbie — rather than the original male Bobby. Below, see a list of all eight of Patti LuPone’s Tony nominations and her two wins.
See ‘Company’ returns to Broadway reimagined in a ‘sublime’ production that honors the late Stephen Sondheim’s ‘indelible’ score
LuPone leads the Featured Actress in a Musical race for her sensational turn as Joanne, the acerbic character who sings the anthem “The Ladies Who Lunch.” The actress has had a long history with the character and this legendary song in particular.

The curtain will soon rise on the 75th annual Tony Awards, so naturally Gold Derby has taken its cue to reassemble its Broadway prognosticators to break down what shows will win big on June 12. Susan Haskins-Doloff joins Sam Eckmann and me to discuss all 15 musical categories, where new works “A Strange Loop,” “Mj the Musical,” and “Paradise Square” lead with double-digit nominations; the new, reimagined production of the groundbreaking 1970 musical “Company” leads the revivals with nine total bids. Watch the full video slugfest above.

Editors Note: Company, the beloved 1970 musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth, has long been thought by many theater aficionados as, if not a perfect work, at least unimprovable, a masterwork in an unparalleled catalogue.
But in 2016, British director Marianne Elliott had an idea — a series of ideas, actually — that would reimagine Company for a 21st century audience and challenge the 20th century’s towering stage musical genius to reconsider his approach. The central character of Bobby, a 35-year-old bachelor, would become Bobbie, a 35-year-old woman. Another character, Amy, an archetypal nervous bride who sings one of the musical’s most memorable songs (“Getting Married Today”), would be gender-switched to Jamie, a gay man undergoing the same panicked jitters in a world newly liberated by gay marriage.
Those and other changes in characters would reflect nearly 50 years of sea-change attitude shifts in gender conventions,...

What do the 25th and 75th Tony Awards have in common? The landmark Stephen Sondheim/George Furth musical “Company,” Angela Lansbury and the beloved tuner “The Music Man.”
The gender-bender revival of “Company” is considered the front-runner for the Tony for Best Musical Revival as well as featured actress for Broadway legend Patti LuPone who brings down the house with “Ladies Who Lunch.” Elaine Stritch originated the LuPone’s character of Joanne; her rendition of “Ladies Who Lunch” is considered one of the indelible show-stopping numbers in Broadway history. Stritch was considered a shoo-in for lead actress but lost to Helen Gallagher for the revival of -the 1920s musical “No, No Nanette.” Go figure. Gallagher was good, but she wasn’t as great as Stritch.
The original “Company” waltzed into the Tony Awards — which took place at the Palace Theatre on March 28, 1971 — with a whopping 14 nominations and won six including Best Musical,...

Winners of the 88th Annual Drama League Awards were announced on Friday, May 20 2022 at a ceremony hosted by Emmy Award-winning journalist Frank Dilella at the Ziegfeld Ballroom. The Drama League Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions from the 2021-2022 theater season.
Tony Awards frontrunners mostly dominated the production categories. Best Musical went to “A Strange Loop,” Best Play went to “The Lehman Trilogy,” and Best Revival of a Musical was handed to “Company.” The Second Stage Theater production of “Take Me Out” prevailed in the hotly competitive Best Revival of a Play category.

Exclusive: Two shows are being lined up to replace Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cinderella musical which closes after a disappointing, short-lived run in London’s West End.
News of Cinderella’s closure became a contentious affair, causing members of the actors union Equity to picket outside the Gillian Lynne Theatre. Cast, crew, musicians and those working backstage were angered with management because many heard about the show’s demise via social media.
However, no time has been wasted in finding new tenants for the Gillian Lynne. Producers stampeded the place in almost impolite haste.
Tickets for the show that immediately follows Cinderella into the theater in London’s Covent Garden will be on sale by the end of next week.
Deadline has learned that it will be the much trumpeted Elliott & Harper, Catherine Schreiber and Leeds Playhouse production of The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, adapted from C.S.

Bobby, bubi, we need to talk about the Tony Awards! This season’s revival of the late Stephen Sondheim’s landmark musical “Company” earned nine nominations, the highest for any musical revival of the year and the fourth largest tally of any show. It earned citations for Best Revival, three for performers Matt Doyle, Patti LuPone, and Jennifer Simard, Best Director for Marianne Elliott, and four others.
Glaringly absent from this well-deserved list, though, is star Katrina Lenk, who plays the musical’s central character Bobbie; Elliott has reimagined the piece with a woman at the fore. If this snub seems egregious, it’s one that productions of “Company” past have had to contend with before.

Some of the biggest names in film, television and the Broadway stage won’t be making the coveted pilgrimage to Radio City Music Hall this June when the 75th annual Tony Awards are handed out, as such high-profile performers as Daniel Craig, Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick, Katrina Lenk, Beanie Feldstein, Jane Lynch and Patrick J. Adams were not among the nominations announced Monday morning.
And at least as surprising as the snubs was the strong showing of Paradise Square, a musical that received fairly mixed reviews and has been struggling at the box office since opening April 3. The musical, a comeback for producer Garth H. Drabinsky, scored 10 nominations (tying with Mj and second only to A Strange Loop). Among Paradise Square‘s are Best Musical, Joaquina Kalukango’s nom for Best Lead Actress/Musical, and A.J. Shively’s nom for Featured Actor/Musical.

With 34 productions eligible for this year’s Tony Awards, there were plenty of names missing when nominations were announced on Monday morning. Among the most surprising 2022 Tony Awards nominations snubs was Katrina Lenk, who plays Bobbie in Marianne Elliott’s reimagining of the late Stephen Sondheim’s “Company.” The production merited nine nominations, including Best Musical Revival, Best Director, Best Featured Actor (Matt Doyle), and Best Featured Actress. Lenk previously won a Tony Award for her performance in Best Musical-winner “The Band’s Visit.”

Every so often, a musical arrives on Broadway that fundamentally changes the art form. Just as rarely, a musical will take home the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, which has only happened 10 times in its over century-long history. With “A Strange Loop,” which just bowed on April 26 at the Lyceum Theatre, Broadway once again welcomes the rare musical that does both. Composer and librettist Michael R. Jackson’s Broadway debut has been one of the most anticipated of the entire season, and a very long time in the making. Stephen Bracknell, who directed the musical’s earlier productions, also helms this one.
“A Strange Loop” centers on Usher (Jaquel Spivey), a young, Black, queer aspiring musical theatre composer working on a show called “A Strange Loop,” who ushers Broadway musicals and grapples daily with his nagging thoughts, which take human shape via the show’s ensemble, which includes L Morgan Lee,...

The critically acclaimed West End revival of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman starring Wendell Pierce and Sharon D Clarke will be produced on Broadway next season, producers have announced.
Pierce will play Willy Loman, and Clarke will portray wife Linda Loman. Clarke won the Olivier Award for Best Actress for the London production, and Pierce received a Best Actor nomination.
Directed by Miranda Cromwell, who co-directed the London staging with Marianne Elliott, the Broadway production will also star Hadestown‘s André De Shields as Willy’s brother, Ben, and Khris Davis as Biff Loman.
“Looking at Death of a Salesman from the perspective of a Black family living in a predominantly White capitalist world changes the way that you hear this text,” said Cromwell, who shared the Oliver for Best Direction with Elliott. “Wendell and Sharon illuminate the heart of this play in a new way...

“It feels like a completely new production,” explains “Company” star Katrina Lenk. The Tony Award-winning actress (“The Band’s Visit”) plays Bobbie in director Marianne Elliott’s envisioned staging of Stephen Sondheim’s classic. Switching the gender of the central role helped Lenk avoid feeling pressure about playing a role many formidable male talents have taken on before her. “We were really approaching it as a brand new piece,” she says, “so all the pressure went away because it didn’t really apply.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
SEEMatt Doyle interview: ‘Company’
Lenk is particularly interested in how changing the character from Bobby to Bobbie allows for a close examination of what it is like to exist as a woman in today’s world. She is asking herself questions like “how do women perform femininity?” and wondering why they have “a tendency to people and have an outward focus on other people’s needs.

“Not only do I have to deliver the most difficult piece that Sondheim has ever written, but I am also running around the stage and throwing myself into the set,” explains “Company” star Matt Doyle. The song in question is the infamous Stephen Sondheim tongue twister “Getting Married Today,” which the actor must perform at an alarmingly fast clip. The daunting number has the audience at the Jacobs Theatre roaring every night. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The character spouting off the hyper-speed lyrics is normally named Amy, but director Marianne Elliott has altered the genders of many characters in this musical. Thus, Doyle inhabits the part as Jamie, a neurotic gay man overcome with wedding day jitters when his nuptials to Paul (Etai Benson) approach. Doyle reveals that Elliott originally brought him in to audition for Paul, but stopped him mid-song so she could hear him read for Jamie instead.

“It’s a true revival in the sense that it is taking existing material and making something new with it,” explains Claybourne Elder of the gender-bent Broadway revival of “Company.” Elder portrays Andy (April in the original version of the show), a hysterically dim-witted but sincere lover of Katrina Lenk’s Bobbie. The actor reveals that swapping the genders of the characters in this Stephen Sondheim musical, helps shape the story in a way contemporary audiences can appreciate. As the actor describes the events in his life which lead him to this point in his career, it feels like destiny that he should star in this particular production. Watch the exclusive video interview above.
Elder admits that as a young theater kid, he would sing along to cast albums at home, but he would only be singing “the fun parts.” Little Red in “Into the Woods,” Dot in “Sunday in the Park With George,...

“It’s a pleasure that we have so many to choose from!” exclaims David Buchanan of the 13 new musicals and musical revivals competing for the 2022 Tony Awards. After the pandemic decimated Broadway and resulted in only a handful of eligible tuners at the last ceremony, it’s a joy to be able to discuss a genuinely competitive lineup of musicals from the 2021-2022 Broadway season. David and I sat down six weeks before nominations are announced – on May 3 – to dish which productions, actors, and creatives will make the cut. Watch the full video above.
David and I are both in agreement that “Six” and “A Strange Loop” are leaders of the pack when it comes to the Best Musical race. The former casts the six wives of Henry VIII as pop divas while the later is a transfer of an Off-Broadway smash about a black, gay writer trying to navigate the theater world.
