Micky Dolenz — the sole surviving member of The Monkees — has announced a new EP of R.E.M. covers. Aptly titled Dolenz Sings R.E.M, it’s out on November 3rd. In anticipation, Dolenz has shared the lead single: his version of “Shiny Happy People.” Stream the song below.
In addition to “Shiny Happy People,” the four-song EP will feature Dolenz’s renditions of “Radio Free Europe,” “Man on the Moon,” and “Leaving New York.” The project will be released via 7A Records, and will be available on special yellow vinyl. Pre-orders are ongoing.
As revealed in a new interview with Rolling Stone, the multi-generational mash-up was the result of a conversation Dolenz had with 7A Records co-owner Glenn Gretlund. “I was talking to Glenn about what to do next,” Dolenz explained. “The band R.E.M. came up. I went, ‘Wow, that’s very cool.’ I’m a big fan… And I...

For artist, composer, and producer Christian Nesmith, music runs in the family — his father was Monkees member Mike Nesmith. The father-son duo frequently worked together, and Christian had a hand in many of his dad’s musical projects.

For Micky Dolenz, it’s a case of Monkee see, Monkee do. The drummer of the Monkees and one-time Circus Boy television star is releasing a new record, Dolenz Sings Nesmith, a tribute to songs bandmate Michael Nesmith wrote throughout his career.
Dolenz’s first new solo studio album in nine years will be released by the UK’s 7A Records worldwide on May 21 and is produced by Nesmith’s son, Christian Nesmith.
Michael Nesmith and Dolenz had planned to tour in 2020 as An Evening with the Monkees, but saw that go up in flames because of the pandemic. The are remounting those plans this month and later this year in theaters in the US and Canada.
As a recording group, The Monkees sold more than 65 million albums worldwide and outsold the Beatles and the Rolling Stones between 1967-1968.

And, later this year, Dolenz is taking his love for Nez’s songs to a new level when he records a new solo album devoted entirely to his bandmate’s music.
