Though people seem to generally associate Tim Burton with a very narrow idea of stylistic and/or thematic efforts, it is becoming less meaningful as time goes on. With Big Eyes, Alice in Wonderland, Big Fish, and Sweeney Todd, Burton may have a certain penchant for letting visuals take over, but he isn’t in the pigeonhole of what leaps to mind when you hear his name. Big Eyes, in fact, is downright “normal.”
But, when Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children comes along with Tim Burton in the chair, it’s difficult to avoid certain expectations.
Those expectations are met well through the first half of the film, but somewhere around the introduction of Samuel L. Jackson as Barron, the villain in our adventure, the movie goes mostly cartoony, and the fun fizzles out.
Jake (Asa Butterfield) finds himself caught up in his grandfather’s (Terence Stamp) surreal stories,...

The movie Big Eyes from Tum Burton has won a lot of awards since its December 2014 release and for good reason. The team behind the film (11 years in the making), led by iconic filmmaker Tim Burton, includes a cast with Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz. It tells the story of Margaret and Walter Keane, and their beautiful and melancholy ‘big eyes’ paintings.
We are not reviewing the companion book which features behind the scenes images detailing everything from costume design to cinematography, and original interviews explore the making of the movie all the way from script to final cut. Also featured is a big (no pun intended) gallery of Margaret Keane’s work.
Big Eyes: The Film, The Art makes for a great making-of book and an art book. It’s a large, heavy hardcover with 192 pages and 109 of those are talking about the production on the film. It...

It's been a while since Tim Burton has done a smaller, more personal film. Over the last decade, Burton has been unreasonably productive, but the projects are typically large-scale studio projects or brands that originated elsewhere that Burton is able to put his distinctive stamp on -- everything from "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" to "Dark Shadows." Well, this Christmas, Burton is getting back in the game with a small project based around a true-life tale -- just like Burton's very best movie, 1994's "Ed Wood." And thanks to USA Today, you can get a sneak peek of the Christmas Day release.
The movie concerns the lives (and, most importantly, marriage) of Margaret and Walter Keane, a pair of artists who popularized mass-produced paintings in the fifties and sixties that featured portraits of small children with huge, sad eyes. Walter was said to be the painter, but it was later...

Helena Bonham Carter as Dr. Julia Hoffman, Chloë Grace Moretz as Carolyn Stoddard, Eva Green as Angelique Bouchard, Gulliver McGrath as David Collins, Bella Heathcote as Victoria Winters, Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, Ray Shirley as Mrs. Johnson, Jackie Earle Haley as Willie Loomis, Jonny Lee Miller as Roger Collins, and Michelle Pfeiffer as Elizabeth Collins Stoddard, Dark Shadows Tim Burton / Johnny Depp’s Dark Shadows is off to a middling start, earning $550,000 at Thursday midnight screenings in North America. Comparing the box-office performance of Dark Shadows to those of, say, Jennifer Lawrence’s eagerly awaited The Hunger Games or Joss Whedon’s superhero ensemble The Avengers would be not only cruel but downright unfair. Although the previous Burton / Depp collaboration, Alice in Wonderland, was a humongous hit, opening with $116 million in March 2010, Burton’s campy version of the late ’60s soap opera Dark Shadows has a different sort of appeal.
