On Monday, LeBron James spoke publicly for the first time about an NBA executive who tweeted in support of Hong Kong pro-democracy protesters and caused a spike in tensions between China and the NBA, saying that Houston Rockets general manager Daryl Morey “wasn’t educated on the situation.”
But after an intense social media backlash, James said his comments were misunderstood and that he was “not discussing the substance” of Morey’s tweet.
On Oct. 4, Morey tweeted in support of the Hong Kong protests. In retaliation, the Chinese government canceled or postponed several NBA preseason events in China. The situation got worse after the NBA offered differing statements, tepidly defending Morey in English, and profusely apologizing in Chinese. Soon after, a bipartisan congressional group that included New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasia-Cortez and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz harshly criticized the league in a statement, saying in part that it is “outrageous...

Actor and filmmaker Mark Duplass has walked back his praise of conservative media figure Ben Shapiro after urging his fans to consider following the right-leaning political commentator.
“I’m really sorry,” Duplass wrote on Twitter Thursday. “I now understand that I need to be more diligent and careful. I’m working on that. I want to be clear that I in no way endorse hatred, racism homophobia, xenophobia or any such form of intolerance.”
Duplass went on to thank those who reached out to him after he was met with a swift round of backlash for his support of Shapiro.
“I want to say thank you to those who reached out with constructive criticism. I have genuinely learned so much,” he said. “That tweet was a disaster on many levels.”
The statement, which you can read in full, was posted to Twitter by Duplass on Thursday morning, shortly after TheWrap...

Mark Duplass was criticized for praising conservative media personality Ben Shapiro on Twitter on Wednesday. The screenwriter and actor ultimately deleted the tweet following backlash from liberals.
“Fellow liberal: If you are interested at all in ‘crossing the aisle’ you should consider following @BenShapiro.” Duplass said in the tweet. “I don’t agree with him on much but he’s a genuine person who once helped me for no other reason than to be nice. He doesn’t bend the truth. His intentions are good.”
Duplass may have had good intentions, but the liberals he addressed in the tweet took his call of “crossing the aisle” as a betrayal and bluntly told Duplass that conversing with Shapiro would not be tolerated.

Mark Duplass Faces Backlash Over Endorsing Conservative Ben Shapiro, James Gunn Comes to His Defense
James Gunn is coming to the defense of Mark Duplass after the indie filmmaker received extreme backlash online for endorsing conservative commentator and The Daily Wire editor-in-chief Ben Shapiro. Duplass took to Twitter on July 18 to tell his “fellow liberals” they should consider “crossing the aisle” and following Shapiro on Twitter.
“I don’t agree with him on much be he’s a genuine person who once helped me for no other reason than to be nice,” Duplass wrote on Twitter to his over 400,000 followers. “He doesn’t bend the truth. His intentions are good.”
Duplass’ advice was immediately slammed across social media. Numerous writers pointed to Shapiro’s history of publishing racist tweets, including one controversial post in which he blamed Trayvon Martin for getting himself shot and killed because he “took a man’s head and beat it on the pavement.” Duplass issued a defense of his original...
