Top Australian actor Damon Herriman and U.K.-Italian star Greta Scacchi join “Succession” star Sarah Snook in horror-thriller “Run Rabbit Run” from “The Handmaid’s Tale” director Daina Reid. The film starts production in Victoria and South Australia this week.

The script was written by acclaimed South Australian novelist Hannah Kent (“Devotion,” “Burial Rites”) from an original idea developed with Carver Films. Anna McLeish and Sarah Shaw of Carver Films are producing.

It’s awards week in Oz as the Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts handed out its major prizes. In a departure from years past, and in a win for the métier, Aacta for the first time recognized casting directors.
At a Monday luncheon ahead of the main prizes today, the inaugural Aacta Award for Best Casting went to Allison Meadows for period drama Riot. While the category was a combined race between film and TV professionals, it marks an important step forward for the industry, says Kirsty McGregor, President of the Casting Guild of Australia, whose credits include Lion, Thor: Ragnarok and Top Of The Lake.
She tells me it was a long road to getting the prize added, but after digging down this past year, and with the support of Casting Networks as a sponsor, the academy acquiesced.

In 2010, Ariel Kleiman came across an article in the New York Times about child assassin trades in Colombia.
The piece affected him greatly and he continued to think about it for months; until he realised his gut reaction was to take the bones of this story and make it into a feature film.
Immediately, the writer/director set about penning the script with partner Sarah Cyngler.
Two years later, he had Partisan.
Partisan follows the plight of 11-year-old Alexander (Jeremy Chabriel) a trained child assassin raised in a cultish retreat consisting of mothers, their children and Gregori (Vincent Cassell); their patriarch.
The film is set in a place Kleiman often refers to as Nowhere Land (actually shot in Melbourne and Georgia). While the initial inspiration for the project may have come from events in Colombia; a Colombian film this is not.

The ABC’s head of arts Katrina Sedgwick and the team behind the award-winning Australian film Snowtown are to appear at Mumbrella360 to talk about the making of the controversial film.
Prior to her new role at the ABC, Sedgwick was director of the Adelaide Film Festival which backed the award-winning film through its investment fund.
Also joining Sedgwick are Sarah Shaw and Anna McLeish from Warp Films Australia, who produced the controversial film. They will be joined by Allison Meadows, senior casting director, Mullinars Casting Consultants.
Snowtown tells the story of Adelaides bodies in barrels murders. Unusually, the casting included a large number of local people who had not acted previously.
While the film was controversial because of its dark content, it has won several awards including best direction in the Australian Film Institute’s Aacta Awards.
The session will be moderated by Mumbrella managing editor Brooke Hemphill

Australia’s most tragic serial murders have been re-imagined as Snowtown, a psychological thriller that will prove its early detractors wrong. Miguel Gonzalez reports.
Few Australian films have attracted as much attention as Snowtown, and it’s easy to see why. The ‘Bodies in Barrels’ murders it’s based on shocked the nation in 1999, when eight bodies were found in barrels of acid in a disused building in the small town of Snowtown, South Australia. Four people were arrested and charged over the murder of 12 victims; John Justin Bunting was the central figure behind the killings, with the assistance of Robert Joe Wagner, Mark Ray Haydon, and James Vlassakis, the son of Bunting’s partner Elizabeth Harvey.
Ever since the project was announced and it was revealed it would receive public funding, some were eager to cast the first stone and dismiss the film as “a shocking way to spend...
