Film CommentaryMari said that Maamannan, his film’s powerful protagonist, is a reimagination of Esaki, a subservient character in ‘Thevar Magan’ who is willing to sacrifice his life for his master Sakthivelu, played by Kamal Haasan.Letting out a spoiler during the film Maamannan’s audio launch, Tamil filmmaker Mari Selvaraj said that his anti-caste film with Vadivelu and Udhayanidhi Stalin in the lead roles was “inspired” by the cult classic 1992 film Thevar Magan. Mari said that the powerful character of ‘Maamannan’, his film’s protagonist, is a reimagination of ‘Esaki’, a subservient character in Thevar Magan who is willing to sacrifice his life for his master ‘Sakthivelu’, played by Kamal Haasan. It is no coincidence, according to Mari, that he chose Vadivelu, who plays Esaki in Thevar Magan, to now play the reimagined character of Maamannan. Mari establishes the politics of Maamannan from the very first shot, just like...

Rotterdam Competition Title ‘Joram’ Addresses Enforced Development Malaise in Survival Thriller Form
Throughout his career, Indian filmmaker Devashish Makhija has been a chronicler of social inequities and “Joram” continues the trajectory.
Makhija’s short films examine subjects as varied as misogyny, corruption, land grab and patriarchy. Amongst his features, “Ajji” (2017) tackles rape and its aftermath, while “Bhonsle” (2018) looks at a host of subjects including loneliness, social justice and the plight of the migrant worker.
With “Joram,” Makhija returns to themes explored in his debut feature “Oonga” (2013). Eminent actor Manoj Bajpayee, who previously starred in Makhija’s 2016 short “Taandav” and played the title role in “Bhonsle,” plays Dasru, a tribal migrant worker in Mumbai whose past catches up with him and he must flee with his infant daughter Joram. Mohd. Zeeshan Ayyub plays Ratnakar, the weary Mumbai cop in pursuit of Dasru. Also in the mix is sinister tribal lawmaker Phulo Karma, played by Smita Tambe (Netflix series “Sacred Games”).

Kolkata, Oct 29 (Ians) Atk Mohun Bagan grabbed the first round bragging rights as they beat arch-rivals East Bengal 2-0 to register their fifth successive win in the Kolkata Derby in the Indian Super League, here on Saturday.
Juan Ferrando made just one change to the Atk Mohun Bagan side that sank Kbfc in Kochi with Subhasish Bose replacing Ashique Kuruniyan on the left flank as they switched to a 4-3-3. Stephen Constantine fielded the same eleven that had taken all three points against Neufc in Guwahati.
In the opening 10 minutes of the high-octane full-contact contest, Atk Mohun Bagan looked menacing. Bose came close as his shot flashed across the goal and out of play. East Bengal almost got their noses in front in the 16th minute, but Thongkhosiem Haokip’s header from Naorem Singh’s cross was parried to safety by Vishal Kaith.

CinemaTNM StaffAmid a row over the portrayal of the bhoota tradition in the Kannada film Kantara, actor Kishore — who plays an important role in the film — urged against “using such a movie to incite superstition and bigotry and divide people”. In a social media post on Monday, October 24, the actor urged people to “think for a moment before falling prey to the brokers of hatred, who have already hijacked the national anthem, flag, logo and poets”. His comments come in the backdrop of a few people criticising Kantara for appropriating the bhoota tradition of the Dakshina Kannada region, and portraying it as part of the Hindu tradition. The actor penned a post titled ‘Kantara and Dharma’, which is “a request of concern to those who are painting the color of Dharma on our Folk deities, the Bhoota of kola and the Daiva of Nema (sic)”. Earlier in October, director Rishab Shetty...

ReviewMithran’s script is so overstuffed with ideas that none of them has the space to grow. Is this a movie about capitalism? Is it about environmental exploitation? Why make a film in the style of a pamphlet?Sowmya RajendranTwitterPS Mithran made an impressive debut with Irumbu Thirai in 2018. The film, which was centred on the perils of technology, was a well-made thriller that was mostly entertaining, even if it made some tall and incorrect claims here and there. Then came Hero (2019), which was on the education system and decidedly more lecturish and bizarre than Irumbu Thirai. With Sardar, a spy thriller, he jumps to a conspiracy involving bottled water. It’s clear that Mithran likes to peg his films on ‘social’ issues that he thinks people should care about. A halo of enlightenment is supposed to develop around our heads as we are eating our popcorn. We’re meant...
