It's difficult to encapsulate the impact of Pendelton Ward's animated juggernaut, "Adventure Time." Not only did the show serve as the launchpad for animators like Rebecca Sugar ("Steven Universe") and Julia Pott ("Summer Camp Island"), but it even served as the structural godfather for Donald Glover's "Atlanta." The series centers on a human boy named Finn and his adoptive brother Jake, a magical dog who can change size at will. The duo goes on magical adventures in very distant lands, meeting new friends, foes, and fascinating characters along the way. The nearly 300-episode series took home seven Emmys, launched a multimedia franchise, and got multiple spin-offs. It was a show that felt like it would go on forever ... until after 10 seasons, it came to a satisfying albeit bittersweet end.

Adventure Time showrunner Adam Muto shared his thoughts on why there was a race change with Donald Glover's character from the series.
Glover returned as a part of the recent animated spin-off Adventure Time: Fionna & Cake, reprising his role from the mainline series.

In the newest Adventure Time spin-off Fionna and Cake, a popular theory involving Jake's wish to Prismo The Wishmaster was seemingly debunked by the last two episodes and a new interview from showrunner Adam Muto.
To quickly give context to those unfamiliar with the original Adventure Time cartoon series, the show's villain, The Lich, had the singular goal of killing all life. To accomplish this feat, he sought out a cosmic being named Prismo to grant him a wish: "The extinction of all life."
After tricking the show's protagonists, Finn and Jake, into helping him open a portal to Prismo's Time Room, The Lich got what he wanted from the Wishmaster and disappeared. Thankfully, the two followed him through the portal, allowing them an opportunity to undo The Lich's wish, with Jake succeeding.

Wondering whether there will be more seasons or episodes of the Max animated series “Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake”? So is executive producer Adam Muto. “It’s in discussion,” Muto told Variety last week at the Scad Animation Fest in Atlanta. “But the person who greenlit the first season is no longer at Max.”
The future of “Fionna and Cake,” and the “Adventure Time” franchise as a whole, is still in the brainstorming phase, Muto said. “My hope is that this series did well enough that they feel like they can invest in future seasons,” he said. “What shape that takes, if that’s a ‘Fionna & Cake’ Season 2 or it’s more of an anthology kind of approach and we focus on another character, is still kind of up in the air… There’s a running list of what we think could work as a series, what we think could...

Although Adventure Time ended its main run in 2018, showrunner Adam Muto appears to be at peace with the idea that a reboot will eventually happen down the line.
In July 2020, Muto told IGN about his concerns regarding developing more Adventure Time spin-offs, noting that "it just depends on a lot of things" like story ideas and timing.
For now, a spin-off titled Fionna & Cake is continuing the franchise's legacy, including some of the core characters like an adult version of Finn and Simon Petrikov, formerly known as the Ice King.

In June 2020, Distant Lands became the first spin-off launched from the Adventure Time world. It was made up of four one-hour-long specials that revolved around Finn and Jake's journey to explore undiscovered areas in the Land of Ooo.
Fast forward to August 2021, Max announced that another spin-off, Fionna & Cake, was in development, focusing on the titular characters first introduced in the main series.

Adventure Time showrunner Adam Muto addressed one concern he has about the franchise's latest spin-off Fionna & Cake.
Based in the world of the beloved animated series, Fionna & Cake follows the misadventures of a gender-swapped alternate reality version of series protagonists Finn the Human and Jake the Dog (who are also seemingly set to appear in the spin-off).
The series centers on Fionna Campbell, a 20-something in a dead-end job who dreams of a world of magic that eventually travels through the multiverse to the colorful world of Ooo where the original series largely took place.

The showrunner for the Adventure Time spin-off, Fionna & Cake, explained the big twist in the fourth episode.
In Adventure Time, Fionna and Cake were the in-universe fanfiction of the Ice King, based on the heroes of Ooo, Finn & Jake. But Adventure Time and Fionna & Cake showrunner Adam Muto wanted to push Fionna and her feline friend to be more than a "girl Finn" and Jake.
To accomplish that, the two had to move beyond being the borderline creepy fanfiction of an old man, so the first thing that had to be changed was their origin in the new HBO Max spin-off.

Adventure Time showrunner Adam Muto explained what's unique about Fionna that sets her apart from Finn in the new spin-off series, Fionna & Cake.
Fionna is the gender-swapped version of one of the original Adventure Time protagonists, Finn. The character made her debut in Adventure Time Season 3's ninth installment where it was revealed that she, alongside her cat Cake, was Ice King's creation.

There is an intricate balance when it comes to animated performances, with animators and voice actors working together to create memorable characters. Remove one of the two elements, and you get a completely different character. Look at Mark Hamill as Joker in "Batman: The Animated Series," Dante Basco as Zuko in "Avatar: The Last Airbender," or Robin Williams as Genie in "Aladdin": These characters work because of the team of animators infusing the characters with life, and because of the unique personality the actors bring to the roles (even if Williams' casting ended up causing a whole lot of problems).
This is to say that fans of "Adventure Time" were disappointed when the spin-off show "Fionna and Cake" released late last month with most of the cast returning to their roles, except one.

Kumail Nanjiani will not be returning to the Adventure Time universe in the new spinoff Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake and that’s because he was never informed of the offer to reprise his voice role of Prismo.
The new Max animated series will not have Nanjiani voice Prismo, something that the Eternals actor would have loved to have done again.
“Yeah that’s not me. I would have loved to have voiced Prismo again. He’s one of my absolute favorite characters I’ve ever had the honor of playing. He is very close to my heart,” Nanjiani shared in a since-deleted post on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. “Unfortunately they never asked me to come back and voice him again. I would have done it for free.”
Showrunner Adam Muto replied to the actor denying that the production hadn’t reached out to offer him the Prismo role again.

Following Adventure Time‘s conclusion in 2018, some storytelling doors were left wide open. One unexplored idea was the multiverse, which existed in the canon long before the modern era of TV and film had multiverse mania. In the latest At limited series, Fionna and Cake, that long-awaited promise die-hard fans anticipated is finally fulfilled thanks to the canonical gender-swapped characters. And it all happens in a bold new dimension unlike any Adventure Time series to date.
Much of the original show’s audience was around pre-teen to teenage ages. Those fans are now in their 20s, experiencing new adult emotions like depression and dissatisfaction that didn’t spin through their minds as children. That all corresponds directly to Fionna Campbell (Madeleine Martin), a Bridget Jones-esque young woman living in a small studio apartment in a non-magical, metropolitan town where many notable Ooo residents are human like her best friends...

The “Adventure Time” universe is expanding, with HBO Max ordering a new half-hour series about Fionna and Cake.
In the 10-episode series, Fionna and Cake – with the help of the former Ice King, Simon Petrikov – embark on a multiverse-hopping adventure and journey of self-discovery. All the while, a powerful new antagonist determined to track them down and erase them from existence lurks in the shadows.
“Adventure Time” veteran Adam Muto will serve as showrunner and executive producer on the series, which is currently titled “Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.” Cartoon Network Studios will produce.

When “Adventure Time” wrapped its tenth season in 2018, the show ended with a brilliant masterstroke of ambiguity, by acknowledging that everybody dies without dwelling on it. You can’t get much more on-brand than that: Over the course of a decade, human Finn (Jeremy Shada) and his pliable talking dog pal Jake (Joe Maggio) became the centerpiece of a vibrant animated post-apocalyptic backdrop, which used the zany irreverence of its “children’s cartoon” formula to address darker and more sophisticated themes. The final scene suggested that the stories of Finn and Jake will continue to inspire good vibes long after shuffle off the mortal coil that is the Land of Ooo.
At its core, the bond between these two buddies — as Jake matured from adolescence to young adulthood — became credible enough to generate real emotion and intelligence around even the most outrageous of circumstances, and it bled into the rest...

This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Friday, July 24. The highlights are below.
The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.
Friday’s events include panels for all three of AMC’s “Walking Dead” series, Hulu’s new Marvel series “Helstrom,” and creatives like Charlize Theron, Joss Whedon, and Robert Kirkman.
The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23 — is being announced daily through Sunday.
All times are Pacific Daylight.

HBO Max subscribers won’t have to wait much longer to venture to distant lands. The streaming service has unveiled the first four minutes of “Bmo,” the first of four “Adventure Time: Distant Lands” hour-long specials that will premiere on HBO Max. The “Bmo” episode hits the streaming service on June 25.
It’s been nearly three years since the beloved Cartoon Network show aired its season finale, but “Bmo” is shaping up to offer plenty of laughs for longtime “Adventure Time” fans despite its far-out location. The upcoming episode centers on Bmo, the Gameboy-shaped robot from the original series. The episode kicks off on a whimsical note as Bmo pilots a spaceship towards Mars with the intent to start a tater tot farm — because why bother with spacefaring if you’re not going to start a tater tot farm on Mars? — while Bmo serenades their hat with a song.

HBO Max has unveiled the premiere dates for its “second wave” of original programming.
Some of the standouts that have been dated include the four “Adventure Time” specials, which will be available from June 25, the Seth Rogen comedy feature “American Pickle,” coming August 6, and the Amy Schumer docuseries “Expecting Amy,” which the streaming service will birth July 9.
The WarnerMedia streamer is launching May 27 with a substantial library of content, and a few originals, headlined by the Anna Kendrick comedy “Love Life.” HBO Max’s jewel in the crown upon launch was supposed to be the “Friends” reunion special, however, the coronavirus production shutdown put paid to hopes that it would be ready on time. WarnerMedia Entertainment and Direct-to-Consumer chairman Bob Greenblatt recently told Variety that special will potentially be completed by the end of summer.

British animator Julia Pott, the creator of Cartoon Network’s new children’s series “Summer Camp Island,” said it spoke “to people who are craving gentleness,” during a presentation of the show Saturday at MipJunior in Cannes, France.
Pott compared her animated series, which follows two friends at a magical sleepaway camp, to “Gilmore Girls.” “Nothing bad is ever going to happen in that show and if you really just need to be soothed you can watch it, and that is what we want with this show… anyone that wants to feel soothed, it is for them.” She added: “There is darker stuff in there but it is in a little cute package.”

Adventure Time crammed countless individual conclusions into Monday’s series finale, each satisfying in their own way, but no singular moment elicited more joyful gasps than the confirmation of Princess Bubblegum and Marceline the Vampire Queen as an official romantic couple. When Marceline thought Bubblegum had become the latest casualty in the battle against Golb’s minions, she unleashed hell on the enemy, only to discover that Bubblegum had survived the attack — a moment they celebrated with a long-awaited first kiss.

Finn and Jake have one clear objective in Monday’s Adventure Time series finale (Cartoon Network, 6/5c): Rally an army to defeat Gumbald and save the Land of Ooo once and for all. But what about the minds behind the show, the ones responsible for effectively wrapping up 210+ episodes of (surprisingly complex) television? What’s their objective?
“Shows are judged almost too much on their ending,” executive producer Adam Muto admits to TVLine. “Like, what’s the landing? That’s what sticks with people, especially longtime viewers. So the difficulty is crafting a satisfying ending that doesn’t feel completely indulgent.

“Adventure Time,” the beloved and groundbreaking animated series on Cartoon Network, ends its 10-season run Sept. 3 on Cartoon Network. An “Adventure Time” DVD box set will be released on Sept. 4 with Seasons 8 through 10.
That longevity (it debuted in 2010) is a remarkable feat, considering that the series was never meant to appeal to the lowest common denominator with its fantasia of characters, including Jake the Dog, who talks and can morph into almost anything; Marceline the Vampire Queen; Princess Bubblegum; and Lady Rainicorn, a half-rainbow, half-unicorn.
But despite the fantastical elements, the show always delivered genuine emotion.
“Cartoon Network was not afraid to says no,” says series showrunner Adam Muto. “We had to make the case to them. … I remember the early days and how we had to fight.” But Cartoon Network, when they saw the results and resonance of every episode, gave creator Pendleton Ward and his brain trust more freedom.

“Adventure Time” has a long way to go, but in many ways, it already ended. In early February 2017, just a few months after Cartoon Network notified the team behind its most surprising breakout hit that the show was canceled, the cast finished their last round of voice work. The final episodes were written, and the saga of Finn and Jake in the magical, post-apocalyptic Land of Ooo came to a close as the cast and crew scattered to new projects. The fruits of their labor will gradually unfurl on Cartoon Network until 2018 — although the timing remains uncertain. Fans must wait for the slow march to the finale, but the creative team is moving on.
“It was bittersweet,” said head writer Kent Osborne, recalling the last day of recording. “A lot of shows don’t last this long, but this felt different because it was just so popular.”

There has never been a show quite like “Adventure Time,” which can be silly, wise and utterly mesmerizing within the confines of a few unpredictable minutes. The news that it will end its run in 2018, after eight years and nine seasons, may come as a shock to anyone invested in its unique pleasures. “Adventure Time” wasn’t just a well-honed animated program with equal appeal to viewers of all ages; that zany attitude delivered warm tidbits of life advice and an emotional purity with the concision of great folk music, and the same lasting power. It was the kind of perfectly conceived formula that suggested immortality. Even with the end in sight, its legacy is secure.
