It’s a battle of the exes like you’ve never seen before in the first full look at Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the new anime series from Netflix.
The two-minute teaser for the show, created for television by executive producers and co-showrunners Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, debuted during New York Comic Con on Saturday. As part of the hour-long panel, O’Malley and Grabinski not only presented the trailer and teased the series, but confirmed that Julian Cihi will voice the Katayanagi Twins (Kyle and Ken).
The trailer takes fans back to Toronto “not too long ago” as Scott asks out Ramona Flowers, the “girl of my dreams.” But in order to date her, Scott must defeat her “seven evil exes.” Electric battles and even more electric guitar riffs set up a new chapter in the Scott Pilgrim saga, which sees the return of the live-action cast as their respective characters.

At the 19th edition of Seoul Indie-Anifest, Han Ji-won’s work is hard to miss. From brochures to tote bags, her pastel, luminous illustrations are plastered everywhere here. In a way, the ubiquity of her work positioned her well for the screening of her latest feature, “The Summer.” On Saturday night, audiences packed theaters, hoping to catch a glimpse of her filmic adaptation of the eponymous novel by Choi Eun-young.

While Lee-Kyeong is quiet and studious, the hardy Soo-i aspires to be a professional soccer player; while Lee-Kyeong is excited about their blossoming relationship, Soo-i keeps mum for fear of judgment. (Welcome to The Daily Stream, an ongoing series in which the /Film team shares what they've been watching, why it's worth checking out, and where you can stream it.)
The Series: "Space Dandy"
Where You Can Stream It: Crunchyroll
The Pitch: "It's the new show by Shinichiro Watanabe." That's all people needed to get excited for "Space Dandy," a series pitched as a spiritual successor to anime classics "Cowboy Bebop" and "Samurai Champloo." "Bebop" defined the adolescence of American anime fandom with its stylish, sad storytelling on Adult Swim in 2001. Since then, the runaway success of "Attack on Titan" on streaming services in 2013 transformed anime into an international hitmaker. Popular American cartoons like "Steven Universe" borrowed from anime, and their artists would say as much in interviews. Now one of the medium's greatest producers and auteurs, after years of toil behind the scenes, was ready to blow everybody away with an all-new vision.

Last month, Peter van der Lugt and I were given the chance to interview anime artist and director Yuasa Masaaki, following several festival screenings of his crowd-funded short film Kick-Heart. Saying that we are fans of his work is an understatement: we both consider him to be one of the most unique, daring and brilliant animators working today, worldwide. Whether it is his epic science fiction series Kaiba, his bizarre film Mind Game, or indeed a short like Kick-Heart, his versatility and fantastic creative force shines through. The interview was held through Skype, with Yuasa-San being in Japan with two of his co-workers present: Eunyoung Choi and Tom Hudson, who both helped with interpreting and technical details. The interview turned into a pleasant conversation covering...
