A joint session of Congress certified Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as the winners of the 2020 election early on Thursday, the climax to a day of unrest in which supporters of Donald Trump stormed the Capitol in a violent siege that ultimately failed to stop the proceedings.
As Vice President Mike Pence presided over the electoral vote count from each state, the victory of Biden and Harris was sealed at 3:32 Am Et when Vermont’s votes put them over the 270 vote threshold.
Several minutes later, after the vote count was finished, members clapped after Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-mn) announced Biden and Harris as the winners. Pence then confirmed his own defeat on the ticket with Trump as he announced the final total, 306-232.

The White House withdrew the nomination of Michael O’Rielly to serve another term as commissioner at the FCC, just days after he gave a speech in which he signaled his opposition to President Donald Trump’s executive order to try to limit liability protections for social media companies.
O’Rielly, a Republican who joined the commission in 2013, was facing Senate confirmation for another term that would have extended through 2024.
The White House did not give a reason for the withdrawal of the nomination, and it was unclear if it was related to O’Rielly’s comments on Trump’s social media order. The president and others on the right have long complained that tech platforms’ content moderation practices are biased against conservatives.
Last week, O’Rielly addressed in a speech he gave to the Media Institute in which he criticized the effort to target the social media platforms.

Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany was finishing up her briefing with reporters on Friday when she criticized so-called “cancel” culture, citing decisions to drop shows like Cops and Live Pd in the wake of protests over the death of George Floyd.
She also included on the list Paw Patrol, the popular cartoon franchise that has aired on Nickelodeon since 2013.
McEnany said that President Donald Trump “is also appalled by cancel culture, and cancel culture specifically as it pertains to cops. We saw a few weeks ago that Paw Patrol, a cartoon show about cops, was canceled. The show Cops was canceled. Live Pd was canceled. Lego halted the sales of their Lego City police station.”
She added, “It is really unfortunate, because I stand with, the president stands with, the 53% of Americans who believe police officers have the most important jobs in this country.”

Late last week, Republican Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina briefly became the most detestable politician in America, at a time when public outrage toward politicians was at an all-time high.
Burr dumped hundreds of thousands (if not millions) worth of stocks after non-public briefings about the extent of the coronavirus crisis in the Senate Intelligence Committee.
At least four other Senators also dumped stock: Republicans Kelly Louffler and David Purdue of Georgia and James Inhofe of Oklahoma, and Democrat Dianne Feinstein of California. Two dozen members of the House...

The Brett Kavanaugh Supreme Court battle has turned into one of the most contentious nominations in our nation’s history. President Trump’s nominee has been accused of past sexual assaults and of being dishonest before the Senate.
Despite testimony by Dr. Christine Blasey Ford, Kavanaugh’s nomination cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party-line vote on September 28th. Following an unaccountably incomplete investigation by the FBI, Kavanaugh’s nomination cleared a key procedural hurdle, setting up a final vote this weekend.

When Davis Guggenheim’s environmental documentary “An Inconvenient Truth” appeared in 2006, it was a widely-embraced wakeup call in which former Vice President Al Gore shook us all as violently as he could. The fact that Gore’s courtly impassivity rarely gave away any deep emotions worked in the film’s favor: The impact came from incontrovertible images and scientific statistics rather than easily-dismissed sentiment. Guggenheim earned an Oscar, and Gore won a Nobel Peace Prize, but there were plenty of naysayers anyway. Glenn Beck, for one, compared Gore to Holocaust mastermind Joseph Goebbels. Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe called him “full of crap.

James Inhofe (R-ok), a man who literally wrote the book on climate change denial, was poised to takeover the Environment and Public Works Committee. On Thursday night, Stephen Colbert used Inhofe's views as a jumping off point to examine the Gop's general stance on climate.

Sen. James Inhofe (R-ok) told CNN’s John Berman on Friday that it is his opinion that the United States is too financially overextended and the military has been degraded to the point that the country is unable to support President Barack Obama’s proposed intervention into the Syrian civil war. Inhofe told the guest host of CNN’s The Lead that America does not “have the assets” to halt the atrocities in Syria.

Have you heard that the government is buying up billions of bullets in bulk so that when the feds inevitably go to war with the American citizenry, we'll be totally unarmed? If so, you're probably listening to a bit too much right-wing talk radio espousing this theory, which was popularized after the whackadoodle NRA convention in Texas.
The likes of Rush Limbaugh, Alex Jones and Mark Levin have convinced Sen. James Inhofe (R-ok) to introduce a bill that would prevent federal agencies to limit their ammunition purchases -- even though Fox News has debunked the conspiracy theory (the Department of Homeland Security simply buys ammunition in bulk to save money on bullets used for training).
Watch Colbert's new segment, "Stephen Colbert's Batshit Serious," as he both indulges and lampoons the controversy in the video above.

A Minnesota radio host said he would like to tell the families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting victims to "go to hell" for infringing on his gun rights.
Bob Davis was discussing those affected by the Newtown, Conn., tragedy during a Friday segment of his show, "Davis & Emmer," on Twin Cities News Talk Am 1130, according to Minneapolis' City Pages. The topic focused on how family members of the 26 victims, 20 of whom were between the ages of 6 and 7 years old, have become advocates for gun control. In Davis' opinion, these Newtown families are infringing on his constitutional rights.
He went on a tirade against the Sandy Hook families, saying:
I have something I want to say to the victims of Newtown, or any other shooting. I don't care if it's here in Minneapolis or anyplace else. Just because a bad thing happened to you doesn't mean that you get...

Sen. James Inhofe is taking criticism of his climate change denial as a compliment.
The Oklahoma Republican is one of the central targets in the newly released climate change documentary "Greedy Lying Bastards," which examines attempts by the fossil fuel industry to thwart emissions standards and mispresent the facts in the face of changing global climate conditions. The film airs Friday at a special screening in Tulsa, Okla.
"I was not surprised to see myself front and center on the promotional material for this climate change movie," he told the Tulsa World, "and quite frankly, I'm proud of it."
Inhofe has long called climate change a "hoax," insisting "we're in a cold spell" when it snows, despite the body of scientific evidence showing that humans contribute to global warming.
Inhofe is featured front and center in a promotional poster for the film, which is executive-produced by actress-turned-activist Daryl Hannah, and...

Democratic Senator John Kerry has been confirmed to take on the role of the 68th secretary of state, replacing Hillary Clinton as the nation's top diplomat. Kerry was voted almost unanimously by his fellow senators.
With 94 senators voting for Kerry, himself included, there were three holdouts in Republicans John Cornyn, Ted Cruz, and James Inhofe. According to CNN, Kerry received a unanimous vote from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, earlier in the day. Kerry has been head of the committee for the last four years.
Kerry, a longtime senator from Massachusetts, lost his bid to become president, in 2004, to incumbent George W. Bush. He was nominated by President Barack Obama in December to become secretary of state when Clinton steps down. The new position will require Kerry to relinquish his seat in the senate, which will be temporarily filled by someone chosen by the governor of Massachusetts.

What Wednesday night’s engaging, high-profile New York screening of “Chasing Ice” needed was more conflict. Yes, Jeff Orlowski’s debut documentary will have plenty of competition throughout awards season, especially as it battles its way toward the Oscar podium. But I mean real argument, debate, confrontation. Because a breathtaking feature-length display of the effects of global warming is ultimately designed to change minds, and the one thing you can be pretty sure is going to be in short supply at a high-profile New York City awards-season screening is climate-change deniers. So, as impressive as that insanely moving footage was to capture, the real challenge for the "Chasing Ice” filmmakers— Orlowski and his producers, National Geographic, Submarine Deluxe and the film’s main subject, photographer James Balog — is to get Fox fixture Sean Hannity, Oklahoma Senator James Inhofe, the billionaire Koch Bros., and...

Tribeca Films has announced that they have acquired the distribution rights for Chris Colfer's Struck By Lightning, and plan a late 2012 release for the film, with day-and-date for Video On Demand. That generally means that they don't plan a wide national opening but only select cities, but it does mean we can all see it.

Oklahoma Republican Senator James Inhofe told Soledad O'Brien that he didn't understand what all the fuss was about over rocker Ted Nugent's controversial comments directed at President Obama. "I can't figure out what people are talking about," mused Inhofe, not missing an opportunity to plug his book. "He's talking about him -- that Ted himself will either be dead or in jail. Now how does that relate to the president? I have a real hard time putting that together. If you want to see how you can be abused, read my book "The Greatest Hoax" and see what Bobby Kennedy, you know, he wanted to hang me for treason and, so, if you want to see some real threats, you can see them. I don't know what they're talking about."...

Continuing with his rant, Baldwin wrote, "Oil Whore Jim Inhofe has betrayed every man and woman who lost their livelihood on the Gulf due to Bp's overwhelming negligence." What prompted Baldwin's bile is unclear, but he later publicly-messaged the environmentally-conscious Matthew Modine and another person that "We need to have Inhofe retire to a solar-powered gay bar." Perhaps he's jealous of all the love George [...]...
