Ready for Prince Harry to release another memoir after Spare? The Duke of Sussex is not yet on his way to telling more of his life story in a potential Spare Part II, no matter how much readers, this writer included, may be yearning for a follow-up. According to royal correspondent and author Omid Scobie, there’s a good chance what Harry left out of his January 2023 book is “never” going public.
There’s enough for a second ‘Spare’ book, according to Harry
In the weeks after Spare hit shelves on Jan. 10, 2023, Harry told The Telegraph content was far from a problem during the writing process. “It could have been two books, put it that way,” the now-39-year-old said. “And the hard bit was taking things out.”
“There are some things that have happened, especially between me and my brother [Prince William], and to some extent between me and...

Prince Harry’s phone hacking lawsuit against Mirror Group Newspapers has seen various memories from his past dissected along with new details. One of the latest: how the Duke of Sussex first got in touch with lawyers to pursue legal action. Harry shared in court he “bumped into” his now-lawyer while vacationing with Elton John.

Following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Netflix docuseries, the Duke of Sussex made more bold allegations against his family in his memoir Spare, and one of his main targets in the book was Prince William.
Harry alleged that his sibling physically attacked him after they had an argument and that William gave him the green light to wear that infamous Nazi costume to a party. But there’s one word Harry used after Spare was published that has a royal expert convinced the duke spoiled any chance of a reconciliation with his brother.

What do writers do when they can’t write? It’s an exasperating question, since some write anyway – even in risky ways.
The risky activities of one strike-bound writer deserve note because he’s a “ghost” who is breaking a prime rule of his “ghosting” fraternity: He’s openly talking about the secrets of his trade.
Ghostwriting can be both rewarding and punishing. Ghosted books are not specifically outlawed by guilds during times of discord, but ghosts know that much of what they write has another problem: It is factually false. Or at least distorted.
All this is colorfully acknowledged by J.R. Moehringer, who is a serial ghost. His newest effort, Spare, about Prince Harry — it was written before the writers strike — adorns the bestseller list amid passionately challenging reviews.
Far from hiding from the controversy, Moehringer has written an article for The New Yorker describing his fights with his...

By the time Spare hit shelves on Jan. 10, Prince Harry’s name had been in the headlines nearly every (or is it actually every day?) for over a month. It started with the Dec. 8 release of the Netflix documentary Harry & Meghan, aimed at unveiling a new, more personal side of Harry and wife Meghan Markle, and the many (many) subsequent headlines and think pieces, followed by the pre-publication tell-alls with 60 Minutes and Good Morning America, all culminating in the release of the thing itself, as even the least cynical among us can’t help but question whether there is anything left to learn about the prince. There is, of course, because he is a 38-year-old man who has gone to war and lost his mother tragically and dressed up as a Nazi for fun, all of which is parsed out with varying degrees of reflection (the least amount...

The publication date and title of Prince Harry’s memoir has finally been confirmed by Penguin Random House, reports ‘Variety’. The publishing titans have said the British royal’s memoir will be titled ‘Spare’ and have set a release date of Jan. 10 – notably missing the usually crucial Christmas market. The hardcover edition has been priced at 36.
The title, according to ‘Variety’, is likely a reference to the nickname given to Harry and his elder brother, Prince William, who is second in line to the throne: “The heir and the spare.”
Rumours about the memoir – and precisely what it may contain – have been swirling for over a year, ever since the deal was first announced in July 2021. According to the book’s blurb, Harry will touch on his experience of his mother’s death as well as love and grief.

Prince Harry’s much-anticipated memoir was expected sometime in late-2022, but the combined inside concern over explosive revelations Harry may choose to tell, and the recent death of Queen Elizabeth II, have reportedly motivated a pushback and retooling of the book.
Random House shelled out 20 million for the memoir in a July 2021 publishing deal, and Harry has been collaborating with novelist and journalist Jr Moehringer to write the book. It’s been said that this book “should make this family nervous” because of never-before-told stories that may crop up.

Random House shelled out 20 million for the memoir in a July 2021 publishing deal, and Harry has been collaborating with novelist and journalist Jr Moehringer to write the book. It’s been said that this book “should make this family nervous” because of never-before-told stories that may crop up.

What makes a movie “Oscar-worthy”? The most cynical answer to this question is that it comes down to campaigning, but the more troubling one goes one step further: The Oscars are a popularity contest, and the strongest candidates speed to the front of the pack simply because they’re overdue for the recognition.
The Academy, which wraps up its first round of voting this week, should consider the impulses behind each vote — especially when it comes to the four performance categories, where familiar faces often benefit the most from aggressive campaigns. Should the Oscars reward actors for taking the craft in exciting new directions — or should they do it for the sake of entitled movie stars who want validation and cred?
That seemed to be the logic of George Clooney’s case for his pal Ben Affleck’s supporting turn in “The Tender Bar.” In an interview last week with Deadline,...

Few actors have done as much to reinvent their acting personas over the last two years as Ben Affleck. After scoring some of the best reviews of his career for 2020’s “The Way Back” – a performance that stayed on the fringe of last year’s awards conversation thanks to his Critics Choice Award nomination in Best Actor – Affleck backed up the praise with lauded supporting work in 2021 features “The Last Duel” and “The Tender Bar.” The result of his good work – and some very well-timed press coverage this year – has Affleck trending toward his first-ever Oscar nomination for acting following wins as a screenwriter (for “Good Will Hunting”) and producer (for “Argo”). He is currently in ninth place in the Gold Derby odds in what is a wide-open Best Supporting Actor race.

George Clooney only has “Good Will” for Ben Affleck.
Clooney, who directed Affleck in Amazon Prime Video‘s “The Tender Bar,” called the film a “real showcase” for his pal.
“You know, Ben’s been through the ringer,” Clooney said to Deadline. “He’s been as high as you could get. He stood on the stage and won a couple of Oscars. He knows what it’s like to be at the top of the game, and he also has had some rough patches.”
Clooney continued, “Some of them, as he has said many times, self-inflicted, but he’s a fighter, and he’s been out there, and he showed up on this one in such a big way and in such a gracious way, and he’s been doing it for a bit, and it’s fun to see the reactions towards him, and it’d be lovely if...

Paul Thomas Anderson
Director-Screenwriter-Producer, “Licorice Pizza”
For Anderson’s ninth feature, the filmmaker returned to the San Fernando Valley to chronicle the lives of a young man and woman in the 1970s. When asked in a Variety cover story why he chooses this location frequently for his films, Anderson replied: “Comfort. Joy. I like the way it looks. I like the way it tastes and smells. I don’t know beyond I love it. Do I wish I had more range? Yes, I do. I was writing another story. I was deep into it and I was distracted by the pull of this one, and of course there’s a moment where you go, ‘Are you really going to make another film in Los Angeles in the ’70s again? Don’t you think you’ve done that?’ Then you ignore that voice, and you swat it away like a fly.

Editors note: Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series debuts and celebrates the scripts of films that will be factors in this year’s movie awards race.
Oscar-winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) admits that after he agreed to adapt author J.R. Moehringer’s memoir into the feature film The Tender Bar a wave of apprehension struck him, he said, “because it’s a very popular book – a lot of people, it’s their favorite book. And I found that out after I said yes, so you get a little nervous about it.”
But Monahan quickly found his own way into the material: How gifted writer J.R. George Clooney, known as one of the better and most prolific actors of his time, is once again back behind the camera with Amazon's "The Tender Bar." With Ben Affleck winning a lot of praise for his supporting role as Uncle Charlie, the movie has garnered at least some discussion as we head into awards season, though critical opinion on the adaptation of J.R. Moehringer's memoir of the same name has garnered more mixed reviews overall. That being the case, I wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I sat down for an early screening of Clooney's latest. What I got was something that...

Every family has some quirkiness but this one more than most, with Ben Affleck as a bartender uncle who guides the young J.R. (Tye Sheridan) to adulthood, in the comic coming-of-age tale The Tender Bar. Based on J.R. Moehringer’s memoir of the same name, George Clooney directs this story of a fatherless boy stumbling towards career and love, with the help of a colorful assortment of relatives, particularly Uncle Charlie (Affleck) who offers advice and support in a bar that is pretty much home.
Mixing affection, youthful adventure, and humor, The Tender Bar is a charmer, that features not only Affleck but Christopher Lloyd as J.R.’s grouchy grandpa and Lily Rabe as his beloved hard-working, emotionally-overwhelmed mother, working so hard that J.R. hardly sees her. But while J.R.

For Variety‘s Writers on Writers, Terence Winter pays tribute to “The Tender Bar” (screenplay by William Monahan).
William Monahan’s superb adaptation of J.R. Moehringer’s wonderful coming-of-age memoir hit me right in the throat. Like J.R., the protagonist of the film, I lost my own father when I was 7 years old, not to a divorce, but to cancer. Also like that young man, I spent the rest of my youth cobbling together a small army of father figures who raised me to be the man, and ultimately, the writer I became.
There was my brother Tom, 10 years my senior, a New York cop who taught me not to take any shit from people; there was Mr. Canzoneri, my best friend’s dad, who showed me the ultimate kindness by allowing his home to be my own as well; Louie the Butcher who was my first boss, who...

The Tender Bar stars Tye Sheridan and Lily Rabe joined a virtual panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: New York awards-season showcase to discuss the film and how they related to their characters.
George Clooney directs Amazon Studios’ coming-of-age tale based on J.R. Moehringer’s 2005 bestselling memoir of the same name, about Moehringer’s experience looking for a father figure in the patrons of his uncle’s Long Island bar.
The older version of J.R., played by Sheridan, is conflicted between his desire to stay with his family and his dream of becoming a novelist. “I come from a small-town, blue-collar background, you know, a bit of a crazy family myself just as J.R. has,” Sheridan said. “I wanted to work in film as an actor, so J.R.’s aspiration to become a novelist… was something I could really relate to.”

Academy Award winner George Clooney is surely one of the wealthiest men on the planet. Or at least, in 2018, he was named the highest-paid actor in the world, in any case. At a net worth of more than $500 million, the “Up in the Air” star and now “Tender Bar” director isn’t hurting for cash. Which is why, as he revealed in a new interview in The Guardian, the “Syriana” Oscar winner was able to turn down a hefty paycheck to the tune of $35 million due to a moral conflict.
“I was offered $35 million for one day’s work for an airline commercial, but I talked to Amal [Clooney, the human rights lawyer he married in 2014] about it and we decided it’s not worth it,” Clooney said. “It was [associated with] a country that, although it’s an ally, is questionable at times, and so I thought: ‘Well, if it takes a minute’s sleep away from me, it’s not worth it.

George Clooney’s “The Tender Bar,” set in the working-class neighborhood of Manhasset, Long Island, spans 15 years starting in 1973. In the film, which bows Dec. 17 in theaters, young Jr Maguire, played by Daniel Ranieri, spends his time among family members: his mom (Lily Rabe), grandmother (Sondra James), grandfather (Christopher Lloyd) and uncle Charlie (Ben Affleck), the last of whom owns a bar called The Dickens.
The Dickens was a real Long Island establishment, but for the film, based on J.R. Moehringer’s memoir, the period setting was re-created in a number of Massachusetts towns, including Beverly, Braintree, Lowell and Worcester.
Production designer Kalina Ivanov outfitted a bar that reflects its past — not just in the thick hardback books that line its shelves but in the rest of the decor as well. “We decided it should be created in 1928 and rooted it in the history of the town, when it came...

As the boy’s determined mother (Rabe) struggles to provide her son with opportunities denied to her — and leave the dilapidated home of her outrageous if begrudgingly supportive father (Christopher Lloyd) — J.R. begins to gamely, if not always gracefully, pursue his romantic and professional dreams — with one foot persistently placed in Uncle Charlie’s bar. Ben Affleck shines as a loving uncle in the first trailer for George Clooney’s “The Tender Bar.” The Amazon Studios film is an adaptation of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist J.R. Moehringer’s coming-of-age story of the same name.
The 2005 memoir centers on Moehringer (played by Daniel Ranieri as a child and Tye Sheridan as a young adult), who finds a father figure in his bartender uncle and the patrons of his bar, who take him to the beach, to ballgames and ultimately inside their inner circle.
“I’m gonna always tell you the truth. Your father is a deadbeat,” Uncle Charlie says in the trailer about Moehringer’s dad (Max Martini), a New York City disc jockey who deserted him as a baby. “I’ll take care of you, teach you the male sciences. I saw you in the yard playing sports. You’re not very good. Find some other activity.

Amazon has released the first official trailer for “The Tender Bar,” the latest directorial effort from George Clooney. Based on the memoir by writer J.R. Moehringer, the movie stars Ben Affleck as a kind-hearted uncle who becomes a father figure to a young boy in a 1970s-set family drama. If the Paul Simon-scored trailer and the title are any indication, “The Tender Bar” appears packed with plenty of scenery-chewing performances and wholesome tears. With a theatrical release on December 17, Amazon could have a bona fide family holiday hit on its hands.

Ben Affleck is an accomplished actor, producer, writer and director, proven by his two Academy Awards. So why does social media chatter generally refer to each of his new and effective outings worthy of Oscars consideration as a “comeback?”
In the middle of his newest film “The Last Duel,” it dawned on me. Nothing regarding his interpretation of Count Pierre d’Alençon should work with his sensibilities as an actor. Yet he completely steals the show in one of three segments designed to belong to Jacques Le Gris (played by Adam Driver). Unfortunately, the Hollywood machine, critics and consumers have taken his abilities for granted. Perhaps it was the paparazzi’s focus on Bennifer or his openness regarding his struggles with sobriety. Either way, he’s shown himself, on multiple occasions, an uncommonly invigorating actor when placed in the right hands.

They say it takes a village to raise a child, but in Pulitzer-winning journalist J.R. Moehringer’s case, a Long Island pub will do. A broadly appealing, only slightly sentimental personal history adapted from Moehringer’s memoir by director George Clooney and “The Departed” screenwriter Bill Monahan, “The Tender Bar” acknowledges how, growing up without a father, the young J.R. found the next best thing, if not better, in his blue-collar uncle Charlie.
It was Charlie — bartender at a spot called The Dickens, where rows of thick hardback books lined the shelves behind the bar — who encouraged J.R.’s early attempts at writing, and who taught the boy what it meant to be a man and how to respect women. When the time came, Charlie showed J.R. how to drive and served the young man his first drink. Where was J.R.’s dad in all of this,...

As a director, George Clooney’s filmography has veered through different genres (most recently from the frigid edges of earth into outer space in the big-scale epic The Midnight Sky). But I don’t think he has ever hit us directly in the heart quite the way his latest, The Tender Bar, does.
The only special effect used in this exceptional and universally recognizable story is simply family. It is what they call in the trade a “feel good” movie, and boy, do we need it now. It should be no surprise that it all comes from real life, specifically a coming-of-age 2005 memoir written by, and about, Pulitizer Prize-winning author J.R. Moehringer and his life shaped by his time growing up in Manhasset, Long Island, specifically the local bar, Dickens, run by his Uncle Charlie. It is really where his education and life lessons from boy to young man were shaped,...

Exclusive: George Clooney meets me at the door of his incredible home in the English countryside, from which he, wife Amal and his Smokehouse producing partner Grant Heslov will commute for the London Film Festival Premiere tonight of The Tender Bar, the film he has directed for Amazon Studios based on the J.R. Moehringer memoir. Having read so much about another home of his elsewhere in Europe, I jokingly ask him, ‘where’s the lake?’ Turns out we are not far from a body of water, the Thames, and there he’ll shoot the rowing scenes for The Boys In The Boat, the drama he’ll direct for MGM on the University of Washington’s unlikely path to win Gold at the 1936 Olympics in Hitler’s Germany.

George Clooney has described his The Tender Bar lead Ben Affleck as “a really wonderful actor who hasn’t been given a lot of great parts to show that off.”
Making an in-person appearance at today’s Deadline Contenders London alongside producer Grant Heslov, Clooney said Good Will Hunting star Affleck is “coming to the age where you get to grow into certain parts.”
“I’m at the age where you grow out of them but he’s growing into them,” added Clooney.
“This was exactly the right time for Ben and he was the first person we thought of [for the film].”
Clooney went on to joke that “Ben did Ok with Batman but has only been named ‘sexiest man alive’ once”, while stating: “I don’t think anyone would argue that of all the batmen I’ve been the best.”
Heslov added that Affleck is “funnier than most people I know,...

Ben Affleck can't stop talking about how much he likes working with George Clooney, and it's honestly very sweet. The very much from Boston actor has dived headfirst into the press tour for "The Tender Bar," an Amazon Studios-produced film directed by Clooney and based on a memoir by J.R. Moehringer, and he has nothing but good things to say about his working relationship with Clooney. The film is all about the love and admiration between a young J.R. (played by Tye Sheridan) and his bartender uncle Charlie (played by Affleck), and fittingly, it seems like the film has fostered a new mentor/mentee...
