Netflix's Night Stalker: The Hunt For a Serial Killer takes us back to the mid-'80s with the chilling case of the Night Stalker, aka Richard Ramirez. As the show retraces the infamous investigation, it features a politician whose name you may have heard of: Dianne Feinstein. The California senator has had her fair share of controversial moments lately, from her dismissive remarks toward youth environmentalists to her hug with Lindsey Graham at Amy Coney Barrett's confirmation hearing. So, how did Feinstein play a role in the Night Stalker case? Back then, she was the mayor of San Francisco. While the Night Stalker was known for terrorizing Los Angeles, one case linked him to San Francisco during the height of his murder spree. Episode three of the true-crime miniseries revisits one of Feinstein's biggest blunders: the time she released confidential investigation details in a press conference.

In Netflix’s “Night Stalker” docuseries, investigators try to find and apprehend Richard Ramirez, a serial killer who terrorized the L.A. streets in the 80s. And while they were on his tail, one political figure unknowingly tipped the killer off and almost derailed the entire investigation.
Ramirez, first known as the “Walk-In Killer,” invaded homes, murdering and sexually assaulting the residents, from June 1984 to August 1985. He used a wide variety of weapons and would leave behind satanic symbols.
When Ramirez killed the accountant Peter Pan in his San Francisco home in 1985, evidence of the crime made it all the way up to then-Mayor Dianne Feinstein, which would be a tipping point in the investigation.
Holding a news conference, she held up a police sketch of the killer, and also went on to describe the evidence from all the cases throughout the state — crucial information that hadn’t been made public.

The second episode of “American Horror Story: 1984” showed the backstory of real-life serial killer Richard Ramirez, also known as the Night Stalker — and the FX show got his childhood down to a T.
Ramirez, dubbed the Night Stalker, terrorized Los Angeles in the ’80s and was convicted of 13 counts of murder in 1989. Zach Villa portrays him in the FX show.
In the second episode, Ramirez meets Leslie Grossman’s Margaret Booth, who is the owner of Camp Redwood, where Ramirez has followed Emma Roberts’ Brooke Thompson. He’s injured, so Booth tends to his wounds while listening to his backstory.
“The worst thing that ever happened to me? Everything,” Ramirez tells Booth. “Pain is all I’ve ever known. Pain is how the world has talked to me, so why shouldn’t pain be the way I talked back?”

Ridley Scott's Prometheus has made some news today by first moving from a March 2012 release date opposite Disney's John Carter of Mars to a summer June 8, 2012 release. Following that move, Michael Fassbender (Inglourious Basterds) has now joined the cast opposite the previously cast Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo).
While the storyline for Prometheus is being kept quiet we still know it began as an expected Alien prequel until it became something different entirely, though Scott is quoted saying, "The keen fan will recognize strands of Alien's DNA, so to speak, but the ideas tackled in this film are unique, large and provocative." Rapace plays a scientist named Elizabeth Shaw while Fassbender will play an android.
Fassbender was previously circling Universal's Snow White and the Huntsman opposite Charlize Theron as the queen, but this deal squashes that one. Although Variety is now reporting the role belongs to Viggo Mortensen,...

Talk about a triple threat of actors for one film.
Back in October we reported a story about Michael Shannon, James Franco and Benicio Del Toro signing on for a biopic about Richard “The Iceman” Kuklinski, one of the more infamous mob hitmen of the past fifty years. At the time it was (and probably still is) in competition with another planned film about the man, set to star Mickey Rourke. That movie, based on The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer by Philip Carlo, truly has some competition now, because Deadline tells us that all three aforementioned actors are now attached to the project, with Ariel Vroman set to direct.
Shannon would be taking on the lead part, and is said to be based on The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer by Anthony Brunowith, as well as Jim Thebaut‘s documentary The Iceman Tapes: Conversations with a Killer.

He took on a challenging role recently with 127 Hours but now James Franco is looking to go one better by starring And directing in another movie biopic in the shape of The Night Stalker according to Empire Online.
The story which was written by Philip Carlo is based on the true life account of serial killer Richard Ramirez who went on a rampage of sexual assault and murder in southern California in 1985, and was jailed after being found guilty of 13 counts of murder, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries during his reign of terror.
Franco has already read the script and has shown his keenness on directing and starring in it from the words of screenwriter Nicolas Constantine.
“This isn’t a horror film, nor does it glorify Ramirez in any way. Philip Carlo painted an amazing portrait of Ramirez the human being, and how he became that monster.

James Franco is making his directorial debut in a big, bloody way with The Night Stalker. The film - based on Philip Carlo's true-crime book - explores the life and madness of Southern California serial killer Richard Ramirez. Hit the jump for more. In addition to directing, Franco will star as Ramirez, exploring the killer's development from human to monster. Producers Chris Cornell (yes, from Soundgarden) and Nicolas Constantine promise that the film won't glorify Ramirez, who was nicknamed the Night Stalker after his chosen time to attack. A salacious version of his story was released only last year in the form of Ulli Lommel's Night Stalker, but screenwriter Nicolas Constantine promises the current version will not dwell on the gory details."This isn't a horror film," he explains. The New York Post is reporting that James Franco will make his directing debut, and star as the satanic serial killer Richard Ramirez, in a new feature film based on the late Philip Carlo’s true-crime novel ‘The Night Stalker’. It’s written for the screen by Nicolas Constantine and co-produced by Soundgarden’s front-man Chris Cornell. Shooting starts this summer when Franco, currently studying for his PhD, will be on a break from Yale. Ramirez (a death row inmate at San Quentin) went on a rampage of sexual assault and murder through Southern California for two years before being captured in 1985. His trial was one of the most difficult and longest criminal trials in American history and the case, including the hunt and his eventual capture, have inspired many films and TV shows over the years.

No, James Franco isn’t replacing Darren McGavin, but instead he’ll play Richard Ramirez, who the La police and media dubbed “The Night Stalker” in mid-1980s. Before you begin to wonder if James Franco has decided to start slumming and play Kolchak of television's The Night Stalker fame, allow us to put your fears to rest. What the actor actually has planned is much, much worse.
Worse in the sense that we're talking about a portrayal of real life serial killer Richard Ramirez, who was also known as The Night Stalker.
Apparently, Franco is set to direct a feature film about Ramirez, and will also play the satanic killer.
The film will be based on the non-fiction book "The Night Stalker" by Philip Carlo, and be adapted by screenwriter Nicolas Constantine.
In 1985, Ramirez went on a rampage of sexual assault and murder, entering homes at night and generating fear throughout Southern California. He was later found guilty of 13 counts of murder, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries. Stubborn and with a vicious temper, he insisted...

James Franco has signed on to play the Night Stalker serial killer Richard Ramirez -- and direct the film in his major motion picture directorial debut.
The NY Post confirmed that Franco will helm and star in 'The Night Stalker,' the film version of Philip Carlo's book about the mid-80's serial killer, Richard Ramirez. A prolific rapist-murderer, when finally caught and put to trial in 1989, Ramirez was found guilty of 13 counts of murder, five attempted murders, 11 sexual assaults and 14 burglaries.
Nicholas Constantine, who co-wrote the adapted screenplay, talked to the Post about Franco's participation.
"I had no idea if he would do it, though, since it's pretty dark subject matter," he confessed. "They told me he was studying to be a director and this was perfect for him. We watched three short films he made, two of which were dark and one of which was about a serial killer.

Actor Tony Danza halted the funeral service of crime writer Philip Carlo on Thursday, November 11 - to pay his own special tribute to his late pal. Carlo died earlier this month aged 61 following a five-year battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.
The writer was laid to rest last week in Brooklyn, New York, but several funeral guests were unhappy because the service contained very few references to Carlo's life and achievements. "Taxi" star Danza interrupted the eulogy by taking over with his own personal speech, according to New York Post gossip column PageSix.
A source tells the publication, "Tony, who was one of Carlo's closest friends, walked right up to the priest and said angrily, 'Excuse me, but this is not about you. It's supposed to be about my friend, and if you can't do that, maybe you should let someone else speak!' "
"People were stunned, while the priest was visibly shaken.

Look, we know Mona wasn’t the instigator of every crazy scheme on Who’s the Boss? (counterpoint: yes, she was), but we ask you, who else could have made Tony Danza scream at a priest during a funeral? Apparently Danza became angry during the funeral of writer Philip Carlo, held last week at the Peter C. La Bella Funeral Home in Brooklyn. The service was also attended by Mickey Rourke and Danny Aiello among others, officially making this funeral identical to a weird sexy dream we once had but feel embarrassed talking about. As Carlo’s eulogy went on, Danza apparently didn’t care for what the priest had to say, eventually interrupting the holy man to yell, “Excuse me, but this is not about you. It’s supposed to be about my friend, and if you can’t do that, maybe you should let someone else speak!’” We...

Mickey Rourke has paid tribute to his pal, real crime writer Philip Carlo, who died on Monday.
Carlo passed away aged 61 following a five-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Als), a degenerative neurological condition also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.
The author was famed for writing insights into the minds of mass murderers, including a 2006 best-seller about assassin Richard Kuklinski - also known as the Ice Man.
Rourke had been racing to complete his big screen portrayal of Kuklinski so Carlo could see the adaptation of his book, and the actor was devastated when he heard his friend lost his battle with illness.
He tells the New York Post, "I was friends with Phil for 30 years. I never met someone who suffered so much and who refused to quit."
Carlo was also fighting cancer at the time of his death. His funeral will be held in New York later this week (begs08Nov10).

Amidst the slew of posters revealed at Afm there is a particularly interesting one: The Iceman. It's interesting for one major reason: talk about a film based on Philip Carlo's biography of Jersey mafia hitman Richard "The Iceman" Kuklinski has been buzzing for over a year with comeback kid Mickey Rourke attached to star. Now out of left field comes another biopic starring Michael Shannon as the 300lb killer, with Benecio del Toro and James Franco co-starring. Ariel Vroman is set to direct and shooting is set to begin in summer 2011. Nu Image is distributing.
This puts Shannon's Iceman way ahead of Rourke's - as there is no director assigned to the latter's film, which features the hefty title The Iceman: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer. Also, Shannon's role as Nelson Van Alden on HBO's acclaimed Boardwalk Empire should help propel the film. Not to mention, just think about it,...

Who would you rather see play a character described by Deadline as "a hulking 6'4" and 300 pound" contract killer who "lived what on the surface was a quiet life as husband and father in New Jersey"? Mickey Rourke or Michael Shannon? It's a question buyers at the American Film Market are facing right now as they decide between two dueling features centered on Richard Kuklinski, the notorious contract killer for the Gambino family who, by his own account, killed up to 200 people.
The question came up regarding these two films after ComingSoon.net uploaded the poster to the right and even after I posted it earlier today someone immediately asked what happened with the Rourke feature, which was first reported back in September. As it turns out, there is now one film being shopped...

There are two Afm project packages being shopped on the same subject: Richard Kuklinski, the notorious New Jersey mob hit man. Nu Image has Boardwalk Empire's Michael Shannon to play Kuklinski and Benicio Del Toro and (maybe) James Franco attached to The Iceman, a film that will be directed by Ariel Vromen that is eyeing a production start next summer. Natural Selection CEO Matty Beckerman comes to Afm with a rival project, on which he said he has just closed a deal for life rights of Kuklinski's wife, Barbara, and Pat Kane, the cop who brought Kuklinski to justice. The project, based on the Philip Carlo book The Ice Man: Confessions Of A Mafia Contract Killer, is being scripted by American History X's David McKenna and has Mickey Rourke attached to play Kuklinski. Beckerman is producing and said his Natural Selection will fully fund a movie that will start production in the spring.

While there’s a movie slated to begin production about mobster Richard “The Ice Man” Kuklinski set to star Mickey Rourke, but it turns out that it won’t be the only film about him that we’ll see soon. The cast recently added Michael Shannon, Benicio del Toro, and James Franco.
The Production Weekly Twitter account posted this news (via FirstShowing), and it will be titled The Iceman, which is completely different from the other film, The Ice Man. The latter is based on the book The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer by Philip Carlo, so I would have to assume that this other project will be based on something else, possibly another book or individual articles or interviews relating to the man.

Mickey Rourke is currently set to star as hitman Richard "The Ice Man" Kuklinski in "The Ice Man," and upcoming film based on Philip Carlo's "The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer" book which is being adapted by David McKenna (American History X, Blow). Everything is progressing nicely, but the project just got some competition from director Ariel Vromen (Danika) who is working on "The Iceman" movie, which is also a Kuklinski biopic but is based on Anthony Bruno's "The Iceman: The True Story of a Cold-Blooded Killer" book. And to make it more of a competition, Vromen just signed James Franco, Michael Shannon, and Benicio Del Toro. Shannon will play the lead role. Summary of the book: Richard Kuklinsky, son of a brutal, alcoholic father who came home only infrequently and a mother who vented her resentment on her children, grew up to be an efficient mass murderer.

Last August, we covered a story about the Iceman, Richard Kuklinski, one of the world's most infamous serial killers and mafia hitmen (Read: Best News Ever: Ice Man Richard Kuklinski Movie Delayed Due To Channing Tatum Casting Possibility). At the time, it was revealed that Philip Carlo, who authored the book The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, was pulling out of his movie deal to adapt the book with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura because Bonaventura wanted to cast Channing Tatum to play Kuklinski.

Finally caught up with The Expendables this weekend. Thought it was kind of miserable, to be honest -- an ugly, loud mess of incoherent action that might have amounted to something in the hands of an expert technician, viz. not Sylvester Stallone. But Mickey Rourke, playing a randy ex-mercenary tattoo artist who delivers an unexpectedly moving speech about the moment he knew he had lost his soul, was a definite highlight. The aging, jaded tough may be becoming a stock character for him, but it's a good one, and he does it with feeling.
And so we get The Ice Man: Confessions of a Mafia Contract Killer, based on the best-selling book by Philip Carlo, itself based on the true story of outspoken former contract-killer-slash-loving-husband-and-father Richard Kuklinski, who claims to have been involved in high-profile assassinations such as those of Jimmy Hoffa and Paul Castellano, and to have killed more than 100 people.
