Exclusive: David Farr, the writer behind the hit BBC/AMC show The Night Manager, is developing a TV version of offbeat assassin pic Hanna with NBCUniversal International Studios. It's familiar territory for Farr, who co-wrote the 2011 Saoirse Ronan starrer with Seth Lochhead for Universal’s Focus Features. The film, which earned $63.8M worldwide and $40.3M domestically, was directed by Joe Wright and saw Ronan play the badass daughter of an ex-government operative who…...

A popular trend for young, rising actors is to take on the Ya novel franchise, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley is following suit. According to Variety, the young star has joined Lionsgate for an adaptation of Chaos Walking, which is set in a world where all living things can hear each other’s thoughts. The novel are a — wait for it — trilogy, so clearly the studio wants this thing to take off, but the big question will be if Ridley can balance it with the demands of the Star Wars saga commitment. Despite this traditional choice, however, Ridley continues to mix her growing filmography palette with interesting choices, as she can be heard narrating a documentary on a young Mongolian eagle huntress soon, as well as starring in a reimagining of Hamlet from Ophelia’s perspective.

★★★☆☆ Keep your friends close and your enemies closer, but what about neighbours? If David Farr's impressive debut feature The Ones Below is anything to go by, it might be best to avoid them completely. Having previously penned several episodes of Spooks and jointly scripted Joe Wright's Hanna with Canadian screenwriter Seth Lochhead, the Guildford local tries his hand at directing for the first time along with typically accomplished writing duties. Covering both bases well, he puts a simmering tale of suburban peril on a slow boil, throws in a twist and a turn and conjures up an end product that is certainly gripping but perhaps too open and shut to linger in the mind after its slick ninety minutes are up.

Assassin’s Creed and Warcraft are no longer the only two contenders in the category of eminent video game movies that might not suck. A third possibility with some unbelievable muscle has just joined the fray. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guillermo del Toro protege Andres Muschietti (Mama) has signed on to turn the Playstation 2 game Shadow of the Colossus into a jumbo tentpole for Sony, which includes him overseeing the script being written by Seth Lochhead. For those unfamiliar with the game, it centers around Wander, an adventurer desperate to revive the body of a slain maiden, for some reason (the details are kept intentionally vague). To do so, he must horseback his way across a vast fantasy world, tracking a teeny glint of light reflected from his sword. When he arrives at wherever the light was pointing to, a Godzilla-sized kaiju conveniently unburies itself from the earth. Bringing down the kaiju (or “Colossi,” as...

Love is powerful, but is it mighty enough to take down towering creatures that would be at home in a Godzilla movie? With the help of an ancient sword, love might be strong enough for such a task faced by the young man Wander in the 2005 fantasy video game, Shadow of the Colossus. In the works for years, Sony’s adaptation of the popular game is taking shape with the signing of a director.
Sony Pictures Entertainment has signed Andrés Muschietti to direct their adaptation of the Playstation 2 video game, Shadow of the Colossus. In the game, a young man named Wander seeks to resurrect the love of his life, a young woman named Mono. In order to have a shot at bringing Mono back from the dead, Wander needs to slay 16 colossi: massive monsters that make Wander look the size of an ant in comparison. In case you were wondering, yes, the Shadow of the Colossus movie is still in the works and now it's gotten a change up in the directors. When the film was initially announced, Josh Trank (the Fantastic Four reboot) was set to direct the video game adaptation, but it looks like his new duties on an upcoming Star Wars spin-off is going to keep him away from the project. Never fear, however, as a new director has been chosen. Come inside to find out more!

It's been five years since Sony Pictures announced that it's turning the "Shadow of the Colossus" video game into a movie. At one point Josh Trank (Chronicle, Fantastic Four) was on board to direct, but now comes word that that's no longer the case. Sony just announced that it replaced Trank with Andres Muschietti (Mama), who'll be directing from a script by Seth Lochhead (Hanna). "We knew we had our director once we heard Andy's take on the material . it was genius," said Sony. "The themes, characters and supernatural elements of the story have incredible international appeal with fans of the game in the millions." The game centers on the character Wander, who along with his horse Agro travels across a Western-style landscape to defeat enemies known as Collosi, with Wander's larger aim to save the girl Mono. It was released back in 2005 and quickly became a huge hit, selling more than 2.7 million copies worldwide.

The videogame Shadow Of The Colossus looks like it's coming to the big screen after all...
Now this could be good. There had been talk before about bringing the excellent videogame Shadow Of The Colossus to the big screen (with Chronicle, Fantastic Four reboot and now Star Wars director Josh Trank attached at one stage). And now it looks as though Sony Pictures has resurrected the project, given that it's appointed a director to it.
Said director is Andres Muschietti, who broke through with the horror film Mama. For some time, he was attached to direct Universal's reboot of The Mummy, before parting company with that particular project. Alex Kurtzman is the new Mummy helmer.
Muschietti will bring Shadow Of The Colossus to the screen off the back of a screenplay that Seth Lochhead is writing. There's clearly some way still to go here, and Uncharted will be the next...

Update 9/4/14: Last we heard about Sony's Shadow of the Colossus movie it was being developed for Josh Trank to direct. Once Trank landed Fantastic Four and a Star Wars spin-off, however, it became pretty obvious he was not going to be making that movie anytime soon. Sony hasn't given up on the video game adaptation, though, and the studio has now hired Mama director Andy Muschietti to captain a new version that will be written by Seth Lochhead (Hanna). We still don't have a timeline for the movie, but see below for more info about the fantastic, award-winning game it's based on. Previously 5/23/2012: Chronicle helmer Josh Trank has been a busy fellow since that modestly budgeted film became a box office success – and he’s...

For a while, it appeared that Chronicle’s Josh Trank would be the man to tackle the film adaptation of Sony PlayStation title Shadow Of The Colossus. But with Trank busy on Fantastic Four and one of the Star Wars spin-off films, a new director is called for, and Mama’s Andy Muschietti is stepping into the breach. The strange and beautiful game focuses on a character called Wander, who must, er, wander through a cursed waste called the Forbidden Land and slay 16 enormous "colossi" (this basically involved searching a creature hundreds of times your size for the tiny "glowy bit" where they are vulnerable) in order to save the life of a girl, Mono. The title was much praised for its gorgeous art and high-quality score, and is sufficiently bare bones of plot that there is lots of room for scriptwriters to find a story. While Justin Marks was...

Hands up if you loved Mama! That sneaky little horror from Universal crept up from out of nowhere, landing a wodge of good reviews and a $146 million worldwide box office. Not bad for a small-time Argentinian director with few credits on his resume, right?
Well, as it turns out, Andres Muschietti may be a name you’ll be more familiar with in the future, as Sony Pictures has hired the director to tackle his first video game adaptation, Shadow Of The Colossus.
The Playstation mega-hit was a bestselling game for Sony, which sold 2.7 million copies. Commended by fans and critics alike for its realistic world building, the game adaptation is much-anticipated. Set in a fantasy world, the story follows a young man who believes his true love to be dead. Armed with the knowledge of a demon who can rouse the dead, he sets off into an epic world filled with a host of beasties.

Muschietti will also oversee a new script from Seth Lochhead, who wrote the action thriller Hanna (a revisionist fairytale of sorts), and we're glad the director ended up with this film. The story takes place an ancient land where creatures the size of mountains roam the majestic landscape. After kicking off the "Twilight" franchise and promptly being replaced by an array of different (and, it should be noted, male) directors, director Catherine Hardwicke has been somewhat adrift. She did a decidedly "Twilight"-ish take on "Red Riding Hood" for Warner Bros. before the fairy tale craze really bloomed and just completed a contemporary thriller called "Plush" that she co-wrote. But now she's headed back to the bestseller list, with an adaptation of Karen Thompson Walker's buzzy debut novel "The Age of Miracles" for River Road Entertainment. The adaptation was written by "Hanna" scribe Seth Lochhead and will be produced by River Road's founder Bill Pohlad. Published last summer, "The Age of Miracles" (which was named one of the best books of the year by BookPage, Publishers Weekly, Booklist and, most importantly, O: The Oprah Magazine) is an apocalyptic novel with an ingenious twist: it's told from the...

When director Gary Ross opted not to continue with the "Hunger Games" franchise--whether by asking for too much time or money or both-- no one sent his face around the web with bold-lettered "fired!" or with a big red X over it. But when Summit moved on from Catherine Hardwicke after the successful launch of the "Twilight" franchise, she was treated as someone who had been unceremoniously dumped. Then the talented production designer-turned-director director of "thirteen" and "Lords of Dogtown" followed her "Twilight" triumph--remember, she's the one who set the tone for the entire series and arguably directed the most successful one by casting Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart--with the-rushed, ill-conceived "Red Riding Hood." (I interviewed her here.) In need of the right opportunity to hit another one out of the park, Hardwicke is set to direct the romantic dystopian thriller, "The Age of Miracles," based on Karen Thompson Walker’s bestselling debut novel.

One minor classic, a worthwhile flick that arrived pre-Spielberg & Lucas blockbuster territory, is certainly the 1970 sci-fi film Colossus: The Forbin Project. This little sweethart is now seeing new life with a new screenwriter. Ed Solomon (Men in Black) set to rewrite the script of Colossus, which has Will Smith attached to headline. This means that Solomon will once again team on a Smith-starrer. Based on a book by D.F. Jones, the original film was the forerunner to the Terminator flicks and presents an all too believable depiction of the rise of the machines. The U.S. and U.S.S.R. put their defensive networks into the... When word came out early last summer that Sony was going ahead with an adaptation of the video game “Shadow of the Colossus,” it was perplexing to say the least. Many wondered just how they would go about pulling it off. Now THR reports that Seth Lochhead, who co-wrote the Joe Wright film “Hanna,” will be working on the script. “Chronicle” director Josh Trank is still attached to direct. Sony has been trying to get this off the ground for the past few years, and it finally looks like things are picking up. That said, considering Trank already has a spring 2015 release date set for his "Fantastic Four" reboot, one can only imagine that 'Colossus' is still a bit of a way off. For those who are unfamiliar with the game, "Shadow of the Colossus" follows a young man named Wander who has to slay sixteen massive creatures in order...

Seth Lochhead, the Canadian-born scriptwriter who co-wrote the action film Hanna, has been ‘dibbed’ to work on Shadow of the Colossus, Sony’s adaptation of the popular PlayStation 2 video game.
Josh Trank is attached to direct the project and is onboard since May 2012, after getting into spotlight because of his hit sci-fi ‘home-made’ flick, Chronicle. He will also oversee the writing of the script. Justin Marks wrote an early draft of the script when the project was initially set up, back in 2009.
The game’s story follows a young man named Wander, who, riding his stallion Argo, travels a world defeating 16 colossal beings in order to resurrect a girl named Mono.
Lochhead has The Governess, a top secret project being produced by Michael Bay, set up at Warner Bros. and has written an adaptation of sci-fi novel The Age of Miracles for Bill Pohlad’s River Road Entertainment.

Looks like former “Chronicle” director Josh Trank’s “Shadow of the Colossus”, his upcoming live-action adaptation of the Playstation 2 videogame of the same name, is moving along, with news that the production has hired a writer. Seth Lochhead, who co-scripted the Joe Wright spy/actioner “Hanna”, has boarded “Shadow”. He will be working with Trank on the script and will rewrite an original draft by Justin Marks, who at one point in time, was the go-to guy for just about every geek project percolating in Hollywood. (Marks is also the man who gave us the award-winning “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li”. Here’s hoping Trank and Lochhead doesn’t ruin Marks’ genius script.) I have no idea what “Shadow of the Colossus” is all about, but according to THR, the game revolves around a character name Wander, “who, riding his trusty steed Argo, travels a world defeating 16 colossal beings...

According to The Hollywood Reporter, screenwriter Seth Lochhead was hired by Sony to work with "Chronicle" director Josh Trank to bring "Shadow of the Colossus" to the big screen.
Based solely on "Hanna," the offbeat, fairy tale-infused teen assassin movie from 2011, it's hard to get a bead on what Lochhead will be bringing to "Shadow of the Colossus," or indeed what Sony is looking for from him here. While "Hanna's" very deliberate Grimm hitgirl story could be a little on the nose at time, it was certainly a clever reworking of the "genetically-engineered-assassin-seeks-answers" plot. How much of that comes down to director Joe Wright remains to be seen (not a knock against Lochhead, but a lot of "Hanna" was about its style and execution).
"Chronicle" director Josh Trank is still onboard to direct and provide supervision of the script, whose current synopsis sees young adventurer Wander and his horse Argo wandering the land,...

Hanna screenwriter Seth Lochhead has been hired to write the big screen adaptation of Sony Pictures' Shadow of the Colossus for Chronicle director Josh Trank. The first draft of the script was written by Justin Marks back in 2009, and Trank will oversee the screenplay re-write.
This movie has the potential to be epically huge, and I can't wait to see how it turns out. I loved playing the video game that the movie is based on, and I hope these guys can pull some crazy cool awesomeness while turning it into a feature film. Here's a run down of the story for those of you not familiar with it...
The protagonist is a young man who thinks his lover has died. Desperate to bring her back, he heads into a forbidden land, and summons a demon who can wake the dead. The price for bringing back his girl: slay 16 colossi that dominate this mystical place.

Sony is trying to get a film adaptation of the hit video game Shadow of the Colossus going. They hired Justin Marks to write the script back in 2009, but they can;t be too pleased with it because they’ve just tapped Hanna Screenwriter Seth Lochhead to pen a new draft.
After Chronicle hit last year Sony signed Josh Trank to direct and he’ll also be overseeing Lochhead’s writing.
Here’s a little rundown of the game courtesy of Wikipedia:
The game’s storyline focuses on a young man named Wander who enters a forbidden land. Wander must travel across a vast expanse on horseback and defeat sixteen massive beings, known simply as colossi, in order to restore the life of a girl named Mono. The game is unusual within the action-adventure genre in that there are no towns or dungeons to explore, no characters with which to interact,...

Sony has signed Hanna's writer for its adaptation of the videogame, Shadow Of The Colossus...
If you've never played Fumito Ueda's 2005 game Shadow Of The Colossus, it's perhaps best described as a kind of interactive tone poem. Although it could be pigeonholed as an action platformer with puzzle elements, it was the game's minimalist atmosphere and sense of desolation which marked it out as something truly special.
Sony has had a movie adaptation of its PlayStation 2 game in development for some time, with Chronicle director Josh Trank attached as its director. Justin Marks (the writer of Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-Li) wrote an initial version of the script, which might sound like vaguely worrying news for some, but the latest word is that Canadian writer Seth Lochhead is now onboard to work on a new draft.

Trank takes on the Fumito Ueda-created game that has a strong narrative arc along with the obligatory creature quotient that is guaranteed to get the visual effects crowd excited.
The protagonist is a young man who thinks his lover has died. Desperate to bring her back, he heads into a forbidden land and summons a demon who can wake the dead. The price for bringing back his girl: slay 16 colossi that dominate this mystical place. These are skyscraper-sized giants that rise from the ground, fly through the air, and come from the water.
