Tonight’s CMT Music Awards show will endeavor to emphasize what’s currently flameworthy, to borrow a word that has long since been retired from the telecast’s original name. Prime performance slots have been given to country music figures who are still on the ascent, from still-fairly-freshly-minted superstars Jelly Roll and Lainey Wilson to up-and-comers who really seem fresh out of the oven, like Megan Moroney and TikTok sensation Dasha.
To a less emphatic extent, “we also know that we have to pay homage to the artists that got us here,” says executive producer John Hamlin, which for the 2024 show means paying tribute to two icons of ’90s country. “So we’re thrilled to be honoring Trisha Yearwood this year, something that Margaret Comeaux and Leslie Fram [his fellow producer] spent a lot of time orchestrating to make happen for the show. Shucked, the pun-filled, corn-fed comedy that surprised critics (favorably) and early on seemed destined to become a sleeper hit, will play its final performance at Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre on Sunday, January 14, 2024, producers have announced.
Shucked, which received nine Tony Award nominations last spring and eventually won one (for featured actor Alex Newell), began previews March 8 and opened April 4. When it closed on January 14, it will have played 28 preview performances and 327 regular performances.
Producers Mike Bosner and Jason Owen announced the closing. The musical will begin a North American tour in Fall 2024, with productions planned for London’s West End (at the Cameron Mackintosh Theater beginning winter 2025) and Sydney, Australia, (Spring 2026 with producing partner Suzanne Jones).
Producers reportedly have floated the idea of finding another Broadway venue after the show vacates the Nederlander, but finding a house in what looks to be a crowded Spring season will be tough. Still,...

“The Voice” has not been much concerned with current Broadway voices until now. That’ll change in a big way with this coming Monday’s episode, which will feature a show-stopping number from “Shucked” — marking the first time a song from a currently running Broadway show has been featured on the long-running singing competition series.
The song is “Independently Owned,” a major nightly showcase for Tony nominee Alex Newell. It’s been cited as the rare example of an original Broadway musical having its first and possibly biggest standing-ovation number come in the middle of the first act… and it’s a testament to “Shucked” as a whole that the production doesn’t feel like it’s going downhill from that early barn-burner.
“We have always imagined ‘The Voice’ as a platform to foster talent while being relevant and of-the-moment,” Melissa Watkins Trueblood, the head of talent for “The Voice,...

In an ultimate show-must-go-on moment in country music history, Wynonna Judd was not about to let the legacy of the Judds slip quietly into the sunset, rather than go out as spectacularly as intended, after her mother, Naomi Judd, died by suicide in April 2022. And so the Judds farewell tour that had been scheduled for last fall did proceed, against all probabilities, with a bevy of top stars trading places as Naomi’s stand-in each night. The emotional end of that road was captured for not just one but two new specials premiering on different Paramount platforms — “Wynonna Judd: Between Hell and Hallelujah,” a feature-length documentary that debuted Wednesday on Paramount+, and “The Judds: Love Is Alive — The Final Concert,” a two-hour performance special bowing tonight on CMT at 8 p.m. Et/Pt.

Puns grow knee-high – and in bawdier moments a bit higher – in Shucked, the new musical comedy that combines the winking hayseed humor of Green Acres and Hee Haw with the decidedly urban, gently subversive camp that peppered the Off Broadway scene in the ’90s with kitschy fare like Ruthless!, The Real Live Brady Bunch and Theatre-a-Go!-Go!’s Valley of the Dolls parody.
The musical comes by its unlikely spiritual DNA honestly, or however it can, through the combined and disparate talents of book writer Robert Horn and composers Brandy Clark and Shane McAnally.
Consider that pedigree for a moment: Horn won a Tony for 2019’s Tootsie, and has written for Dame Edna, Designing Women, Bette Midler and RuPaul. Clark and McAnally have stacked up a big barnful of CMA Awards, Grammys and country music hits. Together this trio is a match made in some bizarro Broadway cornfield of dreams,...

The upcoming Apple TV+ competition series “My Kind of Country,” executive-produced by Kacey Musgraves and Reese Witherspoon, is not just going to be a genre-specific knockoff of “American Idol” or “The Voice,” it’s clear from a first trailer released Friday. Fostering inclusiveness of every sort looks to be as high on the agenda as finding unknown talent, as is made apparent not just from the YouTube teaser but the previously known trio of celebrity talent scouts — Jimmie Allen, Mickey Guyton and Orville Peck — plus a just-released rundown of the dozen competing aspirants.
“The people that i love in country music, they don’t look like me,” one contestant, Camille Parker, a Black woman from North Carolina, is seen as saying. “I’m ready to show people what they’ve been missing.”

Apple TV+’s new music competition series “My Kind of Country” aims to change the perception of country music in a big way — and you can see a bit of that for yourself in the show’s trailer. Watch it at the top of the page, right now.
From executive producers Reese Witherspoon and country music star Kacey Musgraves, “My Kind of Country” features musicians from around the world who’ve been invited to Nashville, where they’ll compete to win what Apple TV+ vaguely refers to as “a life-changing experience from Apple, including global exposure across the Apple TV+ and Apple Music platforms.”
The series, Witherspoon says in the trailer, was conceived of while she and Musgraves were “talking about how country music should stop limiting people, and start opening doors.” And as part of that, the contestants will be mentored by three stars who themselves don’t fit...

Fox’s first-year series Monarch is finished.
The network canceled the family drama set in the world of country music after a single season. The show’s season — now series — finale aired Tuesday night.
Monarch had initially been slated to premiere in January 2022 with the NFL’s NFC championship game as its lead-in. A few weeks before its debut, however, Fox pulled the show from that spot and moved it to the fall, citing pandemic-related concerns that production might be interrupted.
It premiered following an NFL telecast Sept. 11 and pulled in decent ratings but was unable to keep that audience once it moved to its regular time period on Tuesday nights. Monarch was designed to have a shorter run than shows like 911 or its lead-in The Resident, but it was also Fox’s first fully owned scripted series since the network split...

“Monarch,” the country music drama starring Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins, has been canceled after one season on Fox, IndieWire has confirmed.
The show will not return for a second season and will end after Tuesday night’s season – now series – finale.
“Monarch” aimed to be a soapy character drama in the vein of “Nashville” about The Romans, billed as the first family of country music who have built a recording dynasty across generations. But when their dynasty’s reign is put in jeopardy, the family’s matriarch Nicolette Roman (Anna Friel) stops at nothing to restore their family’s legacy.
And though the season premiere was Fox’s most-watched scripted series debut in three years, seen by 3.8 million viewers with a 0.8 score in the key demo, its remaining 10 episodes struggled and averaged far below that initial high mark. The premiere got a big bump following an NFL double header...

Fox has canceled “Monarch,” which starred Susan Sarandon as a country music diva, after one season, a network spokesperson confirmed Wednesday to TheWrap.
“We gratefully thank and appreciate the entire cast and crew for their dedication to ‘Monarch,'” the network said in a statement. Joshua Sasse, Anna Friel, Beth Ditto and Meagan Holder costarred and real country music stars, including Martina McBride, Little Big Town, Caitlyn Smith and Tanya Tucker made appearances.
The series debuted on Sep. 11, 2022, after an NFL double-header, before switching to its regular time period on Tuesdays. It was the number one drama debut for Fox’s 2022/2023 season and initially outperformed “Our Kind of People,” by 30 in the same time slot in 2021 before dipping in subsequent episodes.

CMT and CBS announced Wednesday night that “The CMT Music Awards” will be moving away from its traditional base in Nashville to Austin for 2023, with the broadcast taking place from that city’s Moody Center next April 2.
The news means that the CMA Awards telecast (which is about to air on ABC Nov. 9) is now the only one of the three major country music awards shows still taking place in Nashville — with the other two suddenly both earmarked for Texas. The third show in this triad, the ACM Awards, which aired from Nashville during the pandemic but otherwise have had the out-of-town novelty factor in airing from Las Vegas in recent years, recently announced a move to Dallas for 2023.
The CMT/CBS announcement was made at a Carrie Underwood concert at that new facility, where the star was joined on-stage — by Kelsea Ballerini, who will be returning for her third year as co-host.

Emmy Rose, Loretta Lynn’s 23-year-old granddaughter, doesn’t necessarily think of herself as a member of a royal family. But, standing backstage at this week’s live broadcast of the memorial concert and tribute for her grandmother, she establishes exactly what “Mee-maw’s” path and ultimate destination were. “She saw herself as just a coal miners’ daughter, and she was just relaying her story,” Emmy says. “and then she became a queen for being ordinary.”

When contemporary Nashville artists and songwriters talk about perfect modern country songs, many of them wind up circling around one in particular: the Miranda Lambert-sung “The House That Built Me.” The co-writer of that and other classics over the last few decades, Tom Douglas, is the narrator and subject of a film, “Love, Tom,” just announced as coming out exclusively via the Paramount Plus streaming service on Feb. 24.
A trailer for the project has the world-class songwriter appearing in a variety of Nashville locales, including the Ryman Auditorium, the Shelby Street Bridge downtown, a truck and a front porch, as he offers narration derived from a well-remembered, inspirational acceptance speech he gave upon being inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2014.
Monument Records will release a 10-track companion album of the same name, for which Douglas will be joined by some of the country artists he’s written for and/or with,...

Monarch, the country music family dynasty series starring Susan Sarandon, Trace Adkins, Anna Friel and Beth Ditto, has become the latest victim of Covid-19.
Fox has pushed back the launch of the series from January to fall, citing the rising spread of the virus. The series was set to premiere on Sunday January 30.
The network called the series, which is its first fully-owned drama, a “top priority” but was forced in to the move as a result of the impact of the pandemic on production.
Fox is hoping that by shifting the show to fall of its 2022/23 season, it will benefit from having the entire first season produced and more time to market the drama.
It is one of the most significant scalps of the rising spread of the Omicron variant. A number of broadcast shows from NCIS to Chicago Fire and late-night shows such as The Late Late Show...

Fox’s upcoming country music drama “Monarch” will no longer debut at midseason as originally planned.
The series, which boasts Susan Sarandon and Trace Adkins among its cast, was originally meant to premiere on Sunday, Jan. 30, immediately after the NFC Championship game on Fox. It would then shift to Tuesday nights beginning Feb. 1 for the remainder of its first season. Instead, the show will now debut as part of broadcaster’s the fall 2022 schedule. Replacement programming for the Jan. 30 and subsequent Tuesday timeslots are expected to be announced in the coming days.
“With an incredible pedigree of talent and musical performances, the powerfully compelling drama, ‘Monarch,’ is a top priority for Fox Entertainment in 2022,” a Fox spokesperson said in a statement. “Unfortunately, due to the unavoidable realities of the pandemic and the profound impact Covid-19 continues to have on our industry and around the world, it is necessary to reschedule...

Fox is developing a one-hour music anthology series, Variety has confirmed.
The series is currently titled “Icon.” Each season would focus on the true stories of the music legends we think we know. These icons are the voices who have made a significant mark in music’s history and created a sound and response that people around the world have come to love and identify with.
The potential first season is set to focus on country music’s only mother-daughter duo, Naomi and Wynonna Judd. The iconic pair dominated country music in the ’80s and ’90s, winning countless awards, selling more than 20 million albums and creating a string of hits.
No writer is currently attached to the project. The Judds will executive produce along with Gail Berman and Hend Baghdady of The Jackal Group and Jason Owen of Sandbox Entertainment. Les Borsai, Greg Hill, Cactus Moser, and Larry Strickland will produce.

Fox is planning to produce all six of its pilot orders for this year’s development season and will continue to ramp up its off-cycle pilot orders.
The network has made the decision after its traditional pilot season was impacted by the Covid-19 production shutdown. Fox is the latest network to make its pilot decisions, after NBC and ABC both committed to filming five pilots.
Pilots for comedies Pivoting, starring Eliza Coupe, and This Country, the remake of the BBC series, join dramas The Big Leap, also inspired by a UK format, Argentinean remake The Cleaning Lady, Melissa Leo-fronted crime drama Blood Relative and its Goonies-inspired Untitled Film Re-Enactment Project will all be produced once production can safely resume.
Fox has extended the cast options for all of these pilots, which have all been written by women. All projects will be co-productions with Fox Entertainment and their original studio.
