The marketing blitz for Marvel’s forthcoming Netflix series Daredevil has alluded to the show’s gritty, realistic take on the classic comic. The tale of blind lawyer Matt Murdock’s transformation into the crime-fighting Daredevil flopped in the 2003 big screen adaptation, but by and large the small screen renovation looks set to sidestep the errors which befell the feature.
And that hopeful assessment appears to be exactly what’s in store when the series lands next week. A series of early reviews have hit the web and for the most part, they weigh heavily on the positive aspects of the show. Check out a handful of those advance notices below (via Indiewire):
Matt Patches, Esquire: “”Daredevil” is Marvel After Dark, violent, morally hazy, and peppered with cusses — closer to HBO’s animated “Spawn” series than anything that’s come before it. The show forsakes the Walt Disney Pictures logo for a reason.

Spartacus Casts Julius Caesar, Marcus Crassus for Third Season
Just how can you do justice in casting someone to play one of the most famous men in history?
Spartacus has at least partially answered that question, having officially announced the men to play Julius Caesar and Marcus Crassus. Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Todd Lasance will star as the future Roman emperor, marching toward the throne when we pick up with him in season three. Caesar may have the intellect capable to take on Spartacus, but he's also got enough aptitude in battle to pose a real threat. Crassus, on the other hand, will be played by Simon Merrells; considered one of the richest men in history, he has the ambition and thirst for power to be a danger, particularly if paired with someone like Caesar.
Several key historical figures have been portrayed in the various seasons of Spartacus, including Crixus,...

Tonight on Shameless: Summer Loving
Now that we've gotten a look at the new hustles the Gallagher family of Shameless will be running this season (bar tending, weed selling, fighting, day care), it's time to see how else Fiona, Lip, Ian, Debbie, and Carl will be adapting to life in a humid Chicago summer.
Fiona, currently run ragged from work, love, and her endless responsibilities, has to continue to keep Frank at bay, as her father only seems to come around if he gets a sniff of money in the household. This time, he's brought an illegal immigrant into the household to stay until the baby's born; the woman had paid Frank a pretty penny for the roof over her head, but of course, by the time Fiona finds out, there's no money to be found. Fiona and Frank have always had a very tempestuous relationship and a new season still brings the same manipulation,...

Tonight on House of Lies: Amsterdam
After successfully aiding a bank on the verge of collapse under public pressure, Marty Kaan and the folks of Galweather & Stearn are now setting their sights on the sports industry and it looks like they're well on their way to conquering that bastion of corruption as well. On tonight's episode of House of Lies, the client is a sports franchise dealing with a messy public divorce, a PR nightmare that dealt a crushing blow to the Los Angeles Dodgers last season.
In addition to another sticky situation that the Pod has to get unstuck, House of Lies is giving us our first alone time with a supporting character. Kicking things off is Jeannie, who spent a lot of the premiere trying to stick it to Marty and his wandering eye. This time, however, the recent college grad is reuniting with an ex who...

American Horror Story Episode Ten: Halfway Home
American Horror Story has me still clutching my pearls, while cowering in a corner trying to figure out why did I deserve such an ass-kicking from last night's episode. Let's list the top "Omfg!!!!" moments of the tenth episode of American Horror Story titled "Smoldering Children," which was an apt title, Imho.
One Tragically Down, Two (Three? Four?) To Go...
The huge reveal about Violet still has my mind reeling and I personally don't know what to think, or rather feel, about the revelation that can only be called a "huge freaking game changer." Granted, I predicted (as well as others) Violet's death after she took that cocktail of sleeping pills back in episode six "Piggy, Piggy," but the way the show was written and shot after that event you really had no clue. The reveal itself was utterly devastating and Taissa Farmiga...

The Walking Dead 2.06 "Secrets" Review
Sunday night's episode of The Walking Dead, "Secrets," was the penultimate episode of 2011, and as such served simultaneously as both a payoff and a set-up episode.
There were several major emotional payoffs in "Secrets." Meeting the walker in the drugstore gave Maggie and Glenn's relationship a little more substance than simply a need for physical intimacy, and the conversation in which Maggie identified Glenn as a leader will undoubtedly give him a greater sense of confidence -- but that confidence might just pit him against the rest of his group of survivors.
Speaking of the word 'confidence,' Glenn played a major part in the episode by being hilariously bad at keeping secrets. In a show about the zombie apocalypse, it's difficult to find many situations for comic relief, so naturally Glenn's lack of a poker face was played up considerably, leading to some truly...

HBO has announced the renewal of Boardwalk Empire, its Prohibition-era drama that follows the life of Atlantic City baron Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi). The show, which debuted last season with pilot directed by Martin Scorsese, has been an awards favorite, picking up multiple Emmys, SAG Awards, and Golden Globes for its well-received first season.
While telling the story of the power struggle over Atlantic City and Nucky's bid to hold on to control of the area, Boardwalk Empire has brought several historical figures into the fold (Al Capone, Arnold Rothstein, Lucky Luciano) as well as introduced intricate side plots featuring those in Nucky's orbit (Mrs. Schroeder, Jimmy, Chalky White), whether they want to be there or not. The show stars Buscemi (Fargo), Kelly Macdonald (No Country for Old Men), Michael Pitt (The Dreamers), and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road), and features the likes of Michael K. Williams (The Wire), Jack Huston...

This week's episode of Caprica was titled "Things We Lock Away" and credit to writer Drew Z. Greenberg for hammering away at that idea from every angle. The guy is a veteran writer from the Joss Whedon camp, so he knows how to hit a theme, and well, without making it feel didactic or annoying.
You've got Zoe, who's locked away memories of a traumatic fire, as she makes her way through V-World to find the other deathwalker, Tamara Adama. There's Lacy, who is literally locked away, trapped in an attic by Clarice Willow. Amanda is also looking for literal things that are locked away, searching through Clarice's stuff for anything that will implicate her as a terrorist. And Daniel has two lockdowns - his total control of the Graystone Industries board of directors, and the Adamas' total control of his destiny.
We could go on like this for a while,...

Who would have thought that Stephen King, who would happily have a hobo adapt a sandwich he made once for TV if the hobo would only ask, would approve of the recent news that The Dark Tower will be made for movies and TV?
For those of you not up on the news, The Dark Tower, King’s magnum opus that mashes up science fiction, spaghetti westerns, fantasy and like every other book in the last ten years and King’s ongoing battle with the car that ran him over, will be adapted by Ron Howard and Akiva Goldsman as a series of three movies, and simultaneously, a TV show.
It’s a crazy plan, only made crazier by the involvement of Goldsman and Howard, who have a spotty track record with making things that are, shall we say, good?
Yes, they win Academy Awards and yes, they’re box office is boffo,...

This week, we're graced by the presence of a very special guest, Ugo's editor-in-chief, Chris Radtke. So don't blame myself or Brandon for the extended discussion of So You Think You Can Dance, professional wrestling or which celebrity you'd most like to abduct and force to smoke crack. We invited Chris to discuss the Breaking Bad season finale and but instead we ended up reinacting the show, it seems. We also invited contributing writer, Kevin Fitzpatrick to drop in and elborate on his thoughts about the third season's conclusion. Have some commentary of your own on Breaking Bad, wrestling or drug related celebrity abductions? Let us know in our Facebook group and get your regular Toob Tied fix on iTunes so you don't miss an episode. You just never know what big names we'll be bringing in next.
