The Creator won big at the 22nd annual Visual Effects Society Awards Wednesday night.
The awards were handed out during a ceremony, hosted by actor-comedian Jay Pharoah, at the Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles.
The Creator took home five awards in the feature competition, including outstanding visual effects in a photoreal feature. The Last of Us was also a top winner in the series categories, scoring four awards, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse led the animation competition with four wins.
Other winners of the night included Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, Oppenheimer, Nyad, The Mandalorian and The Flash.
It was previously announced that producer Joyce Cox, who produced VFX on movies including Avatar and The Dark Knight, received the Society’s Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony.

Going into filming the action fantasia that is "John Wick: Chapter 4", franchise director Chad Stahelski had some big challenges to overcome. How the hell do you shoot a fight scene at the Arc de Triomphe at the height of rush hour? How do you shoot a video-game-inspired top-down sequence that requires John Wick to unleash a firestorm of incendiary "dragon's breath" ammo and looks like it was shot in one long take? And perhaps most challenging of all, how do you top three previous films which elevated action to an art form, influencing a whole era of similar films as a result?
Stahelski was used to tackling such issues. Back when "John Wick" was yet to make its 2014 debut, he and co-director David Leitch were basically making what was supposed to be a meager B-movie style project with a star whose then most recent movie — "47 Ronin" — was a bonafide box office bomb.

It’s truly a measure of the pandemic that the 19th annual Ves Awards (to be held virtually on April 6) was dominated by Disney+’s “The Mandalorian” with 13 nominations (topped by photoreal episode). Like the Oscar shortlist, there was an absence of big budget, VFX-intensive studio films. But, truth be told, Season 2 of Jon Favreau’s engaging “Star Wars” bounty hunter series offered the industry’s most innovative tech (wrapped around Industrial Light & Magic’s improved StageCraft virtual production system).
Pixar’s “Soul” was the top animation contender with five nominations, while the feature competition was split between “Project Power,” the Netflix superhero film, Robert Zemeckis’ “The Witches” (which streamed on HBO Max), and Disney’s live-action “Mulan” (which streamed on Disney+), each garnering three nominations.

HanWay Films is launching international sales on multi-Grammy Award-nominee Sia’s feature directorial debut Music.
The film stars Golden Globe-winner Kate Hudson (Almost Famous), Tony-winner Leslie Odom Jr.(Hamilton), and Sia-protégé Maddie Ziegler (West Side Story).
Hudson plays Zu, a free spirit estranged from her family, who suddenly finds herself the sole guardian of her half-sister, Music, Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear), Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation), and Hector Elizondo (Pretty Woman).
Producers on the picture are Sia and Vincent Landay (Adaptation). Jonathan Daniel of Crush Music serves as executive producer alongside Len Blavatnik, Danny Cohen, Julie Greenwald, Craig Kallman, and Will Weiske.
Heads of department include DoP Sebastian Winterø (Kajillionaire), frequent Sia collaborator choreographer Ryan Heffington (Baby Driver), editor Matt Chessé (Quantum of Solace), and VFX supervisor Janelle Croshaw (Captain Marvel). Labrinth (Euphoria) contributes to several of the songs and score.
The sales deal was negotiated by Peter Watson, HanWay Films Vice Chairman and CEO of Recorded Picture Company, together with CAA Media Finance on behalf of the filmmakers.

As the Society noms continue to roll in, the latest comes from the Visual Effects Society as they announce their nominees for the 7th Annual Ves Awards, a ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects in over a dozen categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games. Of course all I really care about are the film noms, but you can check out the full list of nominees by downloading the Pdf press release right here. Iron Man led the way with five nominations and is competing with The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Cloverfield in the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture category, the category probably deemed the highest profile of the bunch and it went to Transformers last year only to see The Golden Compass pull out a surprise win at the Oscars.
