Stephen Chow is the rightful successor to David Zucker and Mel Brooks. He doesn’t possess the same mainstream cachet, but the Chinese auteur has built a career on films that, at their best, work as story-driven slapstick. Chow’s films find the liminal space between madcap Looney Tunes cartoons and Eastern-indebted melodramas. As much an apostle of Douglas Sirk in his penchant for languid romance as a yuk-crazy prankster like Brooks, he knows how to mine the heart of relationships as often as he can find the natural (or unnatural) intersection of comedy and drama.
Chow’s latest, The Mermaid, is an anomaly in a few respects. Coming just months after the previous record-breaker in China, Monster Hunt, The Mermaid is now the highest-grossing film in the country’s history. It’s disappointing, then, that it trickled out with minimal fanfare into a few dozen specialty theaters in the U.

China’s First English-Speaking Sci-Fi Film 'Lost in the the Pacific' Garners International Pre-Sales
Worldwide Sales Agent, Arclight Films, has been racking up pre-sales with theatrical release intentions for "Lost in the Pacific" the first Chinese 3D Sci-Fi action adventure film in English. The film is currently in its final postproduction phase and Arclight Films anticipates a worldwide release by the end of 2015.
Starring Brandon Routh ("Superman Returns") and Chinese actress Yuqi Zhang ("White Deer Plain"), "Lost in the Pacific" is a 3D Sci-Fi action adventure film helmed by Chinese director Vincent Zhou ("Last Flight"). The story sets in 2020 when a group of international elite passengers embark on an inaugural luxury and transoceanic flight that later gets into a seemingly unexplainable catastrophe.
"Lost in the Pacific" is making major headway to become a top international Chinese film, utilizing far-reaching first-rate global resources, including a multi-award-winning team in front of and behind the camera. Filmed at Malaysia’s Pinewood Studios in the spring of 2015, the film is now finishing its visual effects by UFO Internationals. The film’s sound editing is supervised by Oscar-nominated Kami Asgar and Sean McCormack. Oscar-winner Mark Paterson ("Les Miserables") did the final sound mixing for the film.
During filming, "Lost in the Pacific’s" international cast and its universal themes attracted industry attention across the global film market. Arclight Films, which is handling all rights outside China, started the first round of sales in May during the Cannes Film Market when the film was still in production. Since then, the film has secured a number of deals, including Ram Indo in Vietnam, Viswaas in India, Aqua Pinema in Turkey, Pioneer in Philippines and Pt Prima in Indonesia. Arclight Films will be presenting the film to buyers with never before seen footage at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff).
Releasing a film in China, the United States and across the world can be ambitious for any Chinese film, but Arclight Films is confident in "Lost in the Pacific." Although China’s movies have found their niche market in Mandarin-speaking communities in cities such as Los Angeles, New York and Seattle as more Mainland Chinese films getting released in United States, "Lost in the Pacific" is different from other Chinese films. The film is not only aiming to release in major cities around the world, it’s perfectly positioned for a wider release as it is an English-speaking film and lacks a significant amount of language and cultural barriers than many other Chinese films to date. Having represented many Chinese films including "Special ID," "Wolf Warrior," and "Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal," Clay Epstein, Svp of Sales and Acquisitions for Arclight Films remarked, “'Lost in the Pacific' is extremely marketable and holds significant commercial value due to its international casting, story telling and the quality of production.”
“China’s film industry is witnessing increasing box office sales both at home and overseas,” said Elliot Tong, Head of Asian Sales and Acquisitions for Arclight Films. “A film like 'Lost in the Pacific' has all the makings of an international success story on a global scale.”
Director Vincent Zhou also hopes the film will be able to reach more audience worldwide. “It will be an extraordinary visual and acoustical experience with a unique adventure story for the global audience without language barriers,” he said.
“ Distributors have a wonderful opportunity to offer audiences something fresh and exciting,” continued Tong. “Buyers from all territories see enormous potential in 'Lost in the Pacific.' There’s not only fierce competition between Chinese films and American films but also between different Chinese films with the goal of being released to the American marketplace, and I firmly believe in Vincent Zhou and the his international team highly-acclaimed professional collaborators.”
Arclight Films will be showcasing the film further at the American Film Market in November. 'Lost in the Pacific' could very well be the first Chinese independent Sci-Fi film to receive a same-day release worldwide.

There’s a real satisfaction that comes with sweet surprises – for a critic, it disarms them momentarily, as they breathe a sign of relief with the realization that the film they’re committing the time to watch and write on isn’t a waste of time. Seventeen minutes into The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman, I was ready to throw in the towel, watching the grotesquely comical Chopper (Liu Xiaoye), a local butcher in love with a high-class prostitute named Madam Mei (Kitty Zhang), beaten to the punch by giant homeless man and sword expert Big Beard (Senggerenqin). Director Wuershan, making his debut here, falls into a trap early on of supersizing everything – we know he’s making a farce with a mix of slapstick and martial arts, but he wants us to know this fact intimately. Enter hyperactive editing, an eclectic sound mix and a variety of camera tricks that rarely feel inspired.

Law Chi Leung, once thought of as one of Hong Kong’s most promising directors after the likes of “Inner Senses”, “Koma” and “Kidnap”, returns for his first film since 2007 with “Curse of the Deserted”. The film itself is somewhat noteworthy for being a rare Mainland Chinese excursion into the horror genre, based upon a novel by Cai Jun, whose “The Deserted Inn” and “Naraka 19” have previously been adapted for the screen, albeit with varying results. The film stars the incredibly hard working Shawn Yue (“Love in a Puff”), marking his sixth big screen appearance in 2010, with support from the gorgeous Kitty Zhang (“Jump”) as the female lead. Without wishing to give too much away since the film is a vaguely twisty affair, Yue plays a novelist called Guo Jing in Beijing, who has recently published a popular romantic ghost story called ‘The Village’. The yarn proves popular, and a...

The quality isn’t the greatest, but here’s a Chinese trailer for Wu Ershan’s The Butcher, The Chef & The Swordsman, aka Legend of the Kitchen Knife. The martial-arts comedy stars Ando Masanobu, Ben Chang You and Kitty Zhang, and was one of three Midnight Madness films announced on Twitter tonight by programmer Colin Geddes. The other 2 films are Guy Moshe’s Bunkaru (Josh Hartnett, Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson) and James Gunn’s Super (Rainn Wilson, Ellen Page, Liv Tyler). The remaining Mm lineup (which will likely include James Wan’s Insidious, Julien Carbon and Laurent Courtiaud’s >Red Nights and John Carpenter’s The Ward) will be announced at 11am Tuesday.

Tiff Midnight Madness programmer Colin Geddes naturally used the twitter and 12 midnight combo to announce a handful of titles that are the make up of this year's section. Among the titles we have Wu Ershan's The Butcher, The Chef and the Swordsman stars Ando Masanobu, BenChang You and Kitty Zhang. After taking a long break from directing, John Carpenter will preem The Ward - the horror pic stars a panicked Amber Heard (check out the production diary below). Next we have Guy Moshe's Bunraku - with Josh Hartnett, Woody Harrelson, Demi Moore and Ron Perlman in an original universe a la "Sin City" and draws from a mixed bag of genres, including puppets, origami, comic books, video games and German expressionism. Finally we have a Ted Hope produced high profile indie action comedy Super - the James Gunn film stars Rainn Wilson, Liv Tyler, Ellen Page, Kevin Bacon, Nathan Fillion and Linda Cardellini.

Since then it’s been more than a little quiet and - a year being a long time in Hong Kong movie production - we were starting to think the production had hit the rails. But now out of the blue an impressive (if short) teaser trailer has appeared. One reason it may be taking its time is the need for a long post production. We’ve also turned up an FX reel for the film, which shows some pretty complex CG works is being done. They’ve spent some real coin on this one. The teaser trail is bordering on being not work safe. With exactly a week left to go before Stephen Chow-produced/Stephen Fung-directed dance flick Jump hits the theaters all across Asia, Sony Pictures has release a total of eight clips to give us a little taste on whats instore. The comedy film marks Kitty Zhang first leading role and I thinks she really shines through in these clips playing the underdog that eventually realized her full potential. I especially got a kick (no pun intended) out of seeing the clips in "She Shines" and "Dinner with Dad" with Yuen Cheung-Yan for the Kung-Fu action because well, we all know adding Kung-Fu to just about anything will most likely increase the level of awesomeness everytime.

The film tells the story of a young girl (Kitty Zhang) from a small Chinese village that get the chance to start a career as a professional dance in the big city, how original and unpredictable…

Reed’s Bargain Bin [1] is a recurring column where Reed Farrington tells us about a movie he bought for under $5, and whether or not he regrets the purchase. Despite the clever title and participation of Al Pacino, S1m0ne did not receive much attention from critics or movie theatre audiences when it came out in 2002. The director, Andrew Niccol, had some acclaim as a result of having directed Gattaca (a smart science fiction film about a physically defective human in a genetically manipulated world) and having written The Truman Show (a smart allegorical film about a man who's oblivious to the fact that his life has been manufactured for the purposes of a television show). S1m0ne also has a high concept idea behind it: a movie director creates a computer generated actor who becomes a star while only he knows that the actor is computer generated. I think I’ve had...

In 2007, Sean posted on Film Junk [2] about a sequel to Stephen Chow’s phenomenally successful Shaolin Soccer. The sequel would be financed and made by Japanese and only be produced by Chow (who is Chinese). The sport highlighted would be lacrosse rather than soccer. Only one comment was made. Chris thought the movie would be worth seeing for the lead actress, Kou Shibasaki. And then later in the year, Sean posted about a teaser trailer [3] for this movie, now titled, Shaolin Girl. Then I watched All About Women, which I reviewed.

Adding to the films heavy hitting teen idol cast Shawn Yue is also set to star, and better yet, veteran Hk horror director Chi-Leung Law (Inner senses, Koma) will handle proceedings behind the camera. So far it all sounds like a recipe for success. Production has only just begun, but the movie is tipped for release this year. Synopsis: An ancient love curse drew four students to visit a haunted village. When the trip turns horribly wrong, it's up to a young writer and his ex-girlfriend to face the supernatural behind the curse.
