Greenwich Entertainment has acquired North American rights to Billie, James Erskine’s documentary about the life of iconic jazz singer Billie Holiday that world premiered over Labor Day weekend at the Telluride Film Festival. A 2020 release date is in the works from the distributor, which in 2019 released Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice, which was one of the year’s top-grossing documentaries.
Billie features newly unearthed interviews from those who knew Holiday best — Charles Mingus, Tony Bennett, Sylvia Syms and Count Basie among them — and features performances restored into color for the first time. It helps paint the picture of a singer with breathtaking talent and global popularity, and whose song “Strange Fruit” exposed the realities of black life in America and earned her powerful enemies over her short, turbulent life. She died almost penniless in 1959 at age 44.

Deadline reported Wednesday that Ron Howard, director of Rush, A Beautiful Mind and The DaVinci Code, will helm a documentary on the early years of The Beatles.
The film will focus on the years of 1960 to 1966, taking viewers through their formative days playing skiffle and at The Cavern Club in Liverpool all the way until their final tour and their infamous performance at Shea Stadium.
But separating this from many other rock docs that have touched on The Beatles’ massive influence, be it Martin Scorsese’s HBO documentary on the life of George Harrison or the much less sanctioned story Good ‘Ol Freda about the work of Beatles secretary Freda Kelly, is that Howard’s film will have the full support of Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Olivia Harrison, Yoko Ono, and even The Beatles label Apple Corps Ltd.

2014 has been a year of many anniversaries for The Beatles. Back in February, millions tuned in for The Night That Changed America, CBS’s commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the band’s arrival in the United States. Earlier this month, A Hard Day’s Night returned for a brief stay in theatres, in honor of that musical’s half-centennial.
Now, as bursts of Beatlemania return to the popular culture, director Ron Howard is in talks to direct a documentary about the Fab Four, focusing on their touring years in the UK, the Us and 13 other countries. Not much is known about the doc just yet, but it is said to make extensive use of concert footage, some shot from fans in the crowd at several of their 166 live concerts.
“[The Beatles'] impact on popular culture and the human experience cannot be exaggerated,” Howard says. “They were so exceptional yet so relatable.

Exclusive: In another late night Sundance Film Festival deal, Exclusive Media-owned Exclusive Releasing is closing a deal for U.S. rights to Two Mothers, the Anne Fontaine-directed drama that premiered last Friday at the Eccles Theatre. Deal is a low seven figure advance and includes a few other territories, but most of the foreign territories belong to Gaumont, which funded the film. Pic is described as a gripping tale of love, lust and the power of friendships of two lifelong female friends who fall in love with each other’s sons. Naomi Watts and Robin Wright play the moms, and Xavier Samuel and James Frecheville also star. Oscar-winning screenwriter Christopher Hampton penned the adaptation of Doris Lessing’s short story. The deals calls for a traditional theatrical release through Exclusive Releasing, the distribution company that Exclusive co-chairmen Guy East and Nigel Sinclair launched last September, headed by Scott Pascucci and Matt Brodlie.
