The casting branch of the academy is a year shy of a decade old and still doesn’t have an Oscar category of its own. However, the Casting Society has been handing out the Artios Awards for 37 years (“Artios” is from the ancient Greek meaning “perfectly fitted.”).
Nominees for feature films were announced on January 10 (two days before Oscar nominations voting begins). Many of the leading Academy Awards contenders reaped bids across the various categories according to production cost. Winners will be revealed at a ceremony on March 9 (two days after the close of final Oscar voting).
Last year’s big budget winners were the comedy “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and the drama “The Trial of the Chicago 7 ” while “The Forty-Year-Old Version” and “One Night in Miami” took the equivalent prizes in the independent division. “Minari” won the low budget and “The Surrogate” the micro budget prizes while “Soul” claimed the animation award.

Emmy-winning documentary specialists Alex Gibney and Blair Foster say their A&E series The Clinton Affair delved into a political scandal that seems just as timely and topical on ts 20-year anniversary as it did in real time in 1998. Moreover, the #metoo movement is an essential context for revisiting the scandal and it was an active factor in the project’s making and message, Gibney said on Sunday.at The Clinton Affair panel at Deadline’s Contenders Emmys on the Paramount Pictures lot.
The Clinton Affair chronicles the events leading up to the impeachment trial of the 42nd President of the United States and examines them through the prisms of media, feminism, and politics. The sordid scandal bundled up many of Washington’s favorite fascinations: sex, power, ideological warfare, and mudslinging. The series was constructed from archival footage as well as comprehensive new interviews with more than four dozen subjects, among them Monica Lewinsky.

Earlier this year, Bill Clinton undertook a publicity tour — his first in some time disconnected from his wife’s political career, and one designed to promote a thriller novel he’d co-written with James Patterson. But what perhaps was meant as the 42nd president’s sprightly display of charisma and distraction from the news generated by the 45th quickly became something for which he was, strangely, hardly prepared. Faced with questions about his treatment of White House intern Monica Lewinsky, he bobbled them badly, seeming defensive and aggressive, unwilling to let in any point-of-view other than his own narrative in which he’d long since been forgiven.
It was the sort of reckoning that has been a long time coming, first because of an ongoing revolution spurred on by movements like #MeToo and Time’s Up, and second because of our culture’s sudden interest in relitigating events of the 1990s.

With their latest documentary, Rolling Stone: Stories From the Edge, directors Alex Gibney and Blair Foster stitch together old performance footage, recordings from interviews with artists (Ice-t) and Presidents (Bill Clinton), and readings from some of the magazine's most important stories, with the likes of Johnny Depp subbing in for Hunter S. Thompson. Instead of following the magazine's activities year by year, the narrative is dictated by big stories: The film jumps from one big scoop to the next, skipping from Hunter S. Thompson on George McGovern in 1972 to an...

Early in the new documentary Rolling Stone: Stories From the Edge, a 22-year-old Jann Wenner is seen sitting at his desk in the cramped San Francisco loft where he started the magazine 50 years ago. The Berkeley dropout is surrounded by a bulging Rolodex, a rotary telephone and a photo of the Beatles, discussing why he started the new publication. "Rock & roll is a particular form [of music] that's changed tremendously, has changed, keeps changing," he tells a local TV reporter. "There was no publication that covered it the way it should be covered,...

HBO has picked up U.S. and Canadian TV rights for Alex Gibney’s Mr. Dynamite: The Rise Of James Brown, a documentary about the early years of the musical giant to the pinnacle of his career as The Godfather of Soul. The film, produced by long-time Brown fan Mick Jagger, will debut on HBO on Oct. 27.
The documentary tracks Brown’s shift from the R&B sounds that dominated black music in the early years after WWII to the funk sound he pioneered. Brown was particularly known for his searing live performances at the Apollo Theater, on The T.A.M.I. Show (where he was the second-to-last performer, playing before Jagger’s Rolling Stones) and elsewhere. Archival footage of some of that material is part of the doc.
