Blinkbox is poised to exploit the power of its parent company Tesco and “start to fly”, according to director of content acquisition and sales Douglas Davis.
Its two services – the paid-for download premium content platform Blinkbox, which shows Game Of Thrones, and the ad-supported Clubcard TV – are benefiting from promotional activity in stores that began at the start of the month.
Shoppers are now able to buy Blinkbox gift cards, which can be spent on content by users of the service.
The push coincides with the launch of Tesco’s tablet, Hudl, which comes with the VoD company’s services pre-installed. A new TV ad campaign to boost brand awareness is also planned.
Davis said that since the instore push and Hudl launch, film sales on Blinkbox were up 300-400%, while TV sales were up 1,000%.
He added: “This is the most significant period for Blinkbox in the six-and-a half years I’ve worked here. Tesco is a great...

Eighties rap icon Doug E. Fresh is facing fresh financial woe after receiving a bill for more than $2.27 million in allegedly unpaid taxes. The hip-hop star, real name Douglas Davis, had a lien filed against him by Internal Revenue Service (IRS) authorities in New York City in October, according to the Detroit News.
Davis allegedly owes $2,276,848 in delinquent taxes. It's not the first time The Show hitmaker Davis has fallen foul of tax agents - in 2008, he was being chased by the IRS for $367,000 .
Last month, Doug E. Fresh opened a restaurant in Harlem. "Really even in this whole Obama initiative, and everything that's going on with the economy, the only way to jump start it is we have to give each other opportunity. That's the only way to make it work," he said. "I understand the kid that, you know, he needs some money because he gotta get back and forth to school.

RHI Entertainment and Syfy will co-produce two movies which will air on the channel Stateside in 2011 and are available for worldwide licensing at Miptv. "The Other Side" and "Roadkill" will both begin production on location in Ireland this summer.
"The Other Side," written by Douglas Davis ("Carny"), is the story of a groundbreaking device designed to glimpse alternate universes. But when the machine malfunctions and transports a group of observers into a nightmarish dimension of alien terrors, the travelers must use ingenuity to survive.
In "Roadkill," written by Rick Suvalle ("Astroboy"), friends take a scenic Rv road trip to their high school reunion, but their cross-country adventure takes an unexpected turn when an ancient gypsy curse takes effect.
"Both stories are filled with action, suspense, special effects and great imagination. We anticipate a great reception from the international community while at Miptv," said Rhi Entertainment president Robert Halmi, Jr.
