Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
This Past Weekend:
As per my Thursday update, M. Night Shyamalan’s thriller Split ended up winning the weekend but with way more than anyone, including myself, predicted, with more than $40 million for its opening weekend. That’s pretty impressive, and his first movie to open at that level since 2010’s The Last Airbender. Meanwhile, Vin Diesel’s sequel xXx: The Return of Xander Cage ended up making around where I predicted, taking second place with $20.1 million, not a great sign for the continuation of that franchise. Michael Keaton’s The Founder ended up right around where I predicted with $3.4 million, ending up just outside the Top 10. Hidden Figures, La La Land and Sing continued to do well with minimal drop-offs.

The new anthology series Dark/Web is wrapping production this month and some images from the show are making their way online.
Dark/Web is the brainchild of brothers Michael and Tim Nardelli, and Mario Miscione; creators of the cult hit Circle, which was purchased for distribution by Netflix last year.
About the show:
Each episode of Dark/Web explores themes related to the internet and the dangers present in the murky, unexplained layers of the web. Paranoia, isolation, vanity, loss of identity, the viral nature of ideas and social media pressures are just a few of the subjects the show tackles.
Socially, the Internet is as unifying and divisive as it’s ever been; only now, when the entire world is connected, it’s never been harder to unplug. [Continued ...]...

In a very special episode of Los Fanboys, Jammer sits down with Mario Miscione, Michael Nardelli, and Tim Nardelli, the creators of the sci-fi film Circle, as well as the upcoming Lrm-exclusive digital series Dark/Web. For those unfamiliar, the show is a serial/anthology hybrid that explores the dangers of technology in today's modern world.
The synopsis for Dark/Web is as follows:
Dark/Web follows a group of young adults navigating a near future where everything’s online and everyone’s connected, whether they like it or not. When Ethan, Sam, and James find themselves the target of cryptic emails from someone posing as their childhood friend Molly, they assume she’s been the victim of an all-too-common hack. Greetings Lrm faithful!
I know it’s been awhile since we first announced the screenplay contest for the upcoming webseries Dark/Web, but rest assured, it was no easy task to narrow down the stellar screenplays you all sent in, but of course, we had to make a decision.
Lrm and the architects of last year’s cult hit Circle are proud to present the screenplay contest winner (drumroll, please):
.....
.....
....
...
..
.
Christopher Webster!!
As we mentioned above, there were a lot of contenders here, but Webster eventually won us over with his deftly-written script, “Hacked.”
The logline for the heart-pounding winning entry is as follows:
“When a chance encounter with a pop star brings seventeen-year-old Misty Hansen instant online fame, she thinks her dreams have come true. But after a series of pranks puts her life in danger, Misty discovers that getting noticed online can be a total nightmare, and...

Taggart Productions and Felt Films have teamed up with Latino-Review Media (Lrm) for the horror/sci-fi series “Dark-Web.” The eight-part anthology series revolves around the mysterious disappearance of a young Cyber-security analyst and the trail of stories she leaves behind for her friends to unravel.
Both companies are encouraging writers to participate in the series by submitting their own entries (scripts should be around 10-15 pages), themed around the concept of “the dark side of the internet and a constantly connected world.” One entry will be chosen to be part of the anthology. This writing competition has already started as of May 13th and due to positive response, will run until July 5th, 2016. You can read instructions and submit your script here:
http://www.latino-review.com/dark-web
Michael and Tim Nardelli have teamed with Circle writer/director Mario Miscione (also co-creator of the popular web series “The Vault”), to craft this overarching tale. The series will be highlighted by a number of short films within the story, each written and directed by different filmmakers. As well, a number of creatives have already been attached to the project: Tim and Michael Nardelli, Mario Miscione, Autumn Federici, Zelda Williams, Lrm’s Kellvin Chavez, Roxy Shih, Nicky Whelan, and Kerry Rhodes.
Nicky Whelan
Autumn Federici
Zelda Williams
Kerry Rhodes
Roxy Shih
Lrm's Kellvin Chavez
The writer whose script is chosen will get their writing credit on the episode and a co-producer credit to the project, in the credits and on IMDb. This is your chance to create something truly horrifying and take the next step in your filmmaking career by having your own piece of content produced and distributed. Send your scripts now!
And, be sure to check out Lrm (latino-review.com) for updates and winner announcements.
