Los Angeles’ Frieze week got off to a hot start in a fairly chill environment: a roller rink.
“I’m so glad Jimmy finally found a place to entertain in!” cracked James Corden, regarding the estate of super-producer/entrepreneur Jimmy Iovine. The former Late Late Show host played emcee to a crowd that included a rare fusion of music and art royalty: Ed Ruscha, Brian Grazer, Katie Couric, Joel Madden, Benny Blanco, Bob Geldof and sports agent Rich Paul, aka Adele’s partner.
All convened at the sprawling Bel Air manse of Iovine for an art auction, co-hosted by Dr. Dre, to raise funds for a revolutionary education program. In 2013, Iovine and Dre (born Andre Young) opened the USC Jimmy Iovine and Andre Young Academy, a novel university program fusing art, tech and business. In 2022, the duo went a step further, opening their own magnet high school in Leimert Park: the Iovine and Young Center.

“L.A. has come of age — I’ve heard that so many times in the past decade. It has always sounded provincial and defensive,” says Dean Valentine, co-founder of the Felix Art Fair. “We’re one of the four or five global capitals of contemporary art. We always had the artists. But now we have the museums, the galleries, the collectors and, obviously, the art fairs.”
And art fair season in L.A. is back with a bang. This year, the gold standard, the Frieze Los Angeles art fair, is at the Santa Monica Airport for the second straight year. Frieze kicks off with an invitation-only preview Thursday, Feb. 29 and is open to the general public March 1-3.
Steered by Frieze director of the Americas Christine Messineo, the fair will feature booths from more than 95 galleries from around the world. Highlights include new paintings by Sam McKinniss, known for his...

The Tom McCarthy imprimatur always goes a long way in getting an independent feature off the ground, and here the Oscar-winning “Spotlight” director serves as executive producer on a documentary about Mary Heilmann. A countercultural icon, the 83-year-old Heilmann is among the most influential abstract painters of her generation, emerging out of minimalism and the Beat Generation in California, with shows at the likes of Hauser & Wirth and the New Museum. Matt Creed’s documentary “Waves, Roads, & Hallucinations” premieres at the Hamptons Film Festival on Monday and is currently seeking U.S. distribution. IndieWire shares a first look clip below.
More on the film: Director Matt Creed offers an intimate and vivid experience that follows Heilmann for seven years in her natural environments, from her studios in Bridgehampton and Tribeca to her installation at the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin. Incorporating rare archival material, found footage, and original in-studio moments of Heilmann at work,...

On October 26, the 21st annual Two x Two for AIDS and Art benefit dinner and contemporary art auction raised $8 million with funds benefiting amfAR, The Foundation for AIDS Research, and the Dallas Museum of Art.
Five hundred people attended the sold-out black-tie event co-hosted by Cindy and Howard Rachofsky at their home, The Rachofsky House, along with Lisa and John Runyon.
“Embarking into our third decade of Two x Two, it is clear that the enthusiasm continues to swell around supporting these two organizations. Having started Two x Two week with the devastating impact from tornados in our neighborhood, it was unanimous among all leadership at Two x Two, the Dallas Museum of Art, and amfAR that a portion of the proceeds this year be given to support the relief efforts in our immediate community. After all, Two x Two was created to save lives and brighten them up with the beauty of art.
