We’ve seen and heard on the first two episodes of ReInvent Hollywood how technology and desire are changing the nature of the film form as well as how artists consider their work and relationship with the business. Barriers to entry of both creation and distribution have been crushed. Platforms abound for a wide variety of formats, aesthetics, and engagements. As a result we are all overwhelmed by an abundance of culture and leisure time options, challenging both business and consumption models. How do these same changes effect things on the side of the audience? In tackling that issue on “ReInvent Hollywood: The Audience”, I found a new way to explain what the Film Industry must do in our era of transition.

Reinvent Hollywood continued its Google Hangout series with "The Audience," a look at the role of the audience in the filmmaking process. "Increasingly, audiences are built, not found," said series host, Fandor CEO Ted Hope. "It's a new collaborative era. The barrier between creator and audience is dissolving. Filmgoers will not only applaud from their seats, but participate in the creation of the movies and the buzz-building that happens later." The 90-minute episode — the third part of a six-part series — featured filmmaker Gillian Robespierre ("Obvious Child"), Anne Thompson of Thompson on Hollywood, Tim League, CEO of Drafthouse Films," "Veronica Mars" producer Ivan Askwith, Marc Hofstatter, head of film at IndieGoGo and Marc Schiller, CEO of Bond360. "The way we see those unique features produced by the Hollywood studio system which we obviously don't see very often, is the audience voting with their dollars. If...
