If Warner Bros.’ newly announced The Lord of the Rings movie idea The Hunt for Gollum sounded a bit like fan fiction, that’s because it already is.
There’s a 2009 fan-made film titled The Hunt for Gollum that you can watch below. The film, directed by Chris Bouchard, is rather ambitious. The Hunt for Gollum spans 39 minutes and has received plenty of praise from fans upon its release.
Following WB’s announcement, the film was taken offline for many hours and YouTube put up a notice saying Warner Bros. had filed a copyright claim against the fan movie and blocked it. Lotr fans reacted quite negatively to the takedown online and, early Friday, the film was restored to YouTube.
A studio source says the takedown request was done in error.

While Amazon continues Tolkien’s Middle-Earth adventures with The Rings of Power series, Warner Bros. would run with their own rights to the IP, which would be parallel to the show — not intended to intersect. It was recently announced that Warners is bringing back Peter Jackson, who made his bigger-budget blockbuster career on the Lord of the Rings movies back in the early 2000s. Jackson will produce a film that Andy Serkis will direct, which is a Gollum spin-off, tentatively titled The Hunt for Gollum. A statement from the studio would comment, “We are honored they have agreed be our partners on these two new films. With Andy coming aboard to direct Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum(*Wt), we continue an important commitment to excellence that is a true hallmark of how we all want to venture ahead and further contribute to the Lord of the Rings cinematic history.

Using her and#163;25,000 ($39,000) life savings Kate Madison made her own Lord of the Rings film titled Born of Hope, and as the Daily Mail points out it is getting plenty of play online and is ready to watch at the bottom of this post.
Checking out the YouTube page it is marked as in response to The Hunt for Gollum, another fan made Rings-related feature which I discussed back in May 2009 and is available to watch right here. The Hunt for Gollum follows Aragorn (Adrian Webster), the Heir of Isildur as he sets out to find the creature Gollum (voiced by Gareth Brough and Jason Perino). The creature must be found to discover the truth about the ring, and to protect the future Ringbearer.
Born of Hope is inspired by only a couple of paragraphs written by J.R.R. Tolkien in the appendices of the "Lord of the Rings." Set in...

If you’re not already a Tolkien geek, this won’t turn you into one, and if you’re not already a Tolkien geek, you won’t get much out of this... Okay, now that the non-Tolkien geeks are gone: Wow. This is a beautiful little fan film: it’s fan fiction to the Nth degree, a “missing scene” story that Tolkien wrote but Peter Jackson didn’t film for his Lord of the Rings trilogy And rightly so: it wasn’t necessary for the larger telling of the whole big epic, but it’s lovely to see it done up so nicely for, as the proudly fannish creators inform us, “the personal, uncompensated enjoyment of ourselves and other Tolkien fans.” In between the events of The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring, Aragorn (Adrian Webster) attempts to track down Gollum (cleverly CGI’ed, and voiced by Gareth Brough...

Back in mid-February I posted the trailer for the independently made film The Hunt for Gollum, which follows Aragorn (Adrian Webster), the Heir of Isildur as he sets out to find the creature Gollum (voiced by Gareth Brough and Jason Perino). The creature must be found to discover the truth about the ring, and to protect the future Ringbearer. The script for the film was adapted from elements of the appendices of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" by Chris Bouchard, who also served as exec producer and director. At the time I posted the trailer it was known the film would be releasing on May 3 and, wouldn't you know, it completely slipped my mind until regular RopeofSilicon reader "Jm" shot me an email to remind me today is in fact May 3 and the full film, which has a running time of 38:11, can be viewed online right now in HD.
