Bob Costas is joining the starting lineup at WarnerMedia’s Turner Sports — at least for now.
The veteran sportscaster will serve as on-site studio host for pre-game and post-game coverage of the National League Championship Series on Warner’s TBS cable network, marking the first time Costas has worked game coverage for the media conglomerate. He already hosts a sports-journalism program, “Back On The Record,” on Warner’s HBO, and contributes to its CNN news network.
“It’s my job to kind of move everything along, be the traffic cop asking a few good questions,” Costas says in an interview. He has been calling and analyzing the sport since the 1980s, first for NBC and more recently for the MLB Network. Talks between Costas and Turner Sports were previously reported in August by the New York Post.

WarnerMedia’s Turner Sports and Major League Baseball have reached a seven-year rights extension through 2028, with HBO Max potentially a future venue for game broadcasts.
While the partners are not commenting on the valuation of the deal, it has been reported to be $3.75 billion, or $535 million a year.
The re-up will keep games on TBS, a longtime MLB broadcaster with particular prominence in the postseason. Under the new agreement, TBS will add a season-long Tuesday night game franchise and digital rights will be added to Bleacher Report plus what the official announcement called “additional WarnerMedia platforms.”
One of those platforms is HBO Max, which launched in May and has gotten off to a sluggish start. An ad-supported tier of the subscription service is due to launch in 2021 and executives have said it will include live sports and news. No details have emerged about those offerings as of yet and a...

WarnerMedia extended its relationship with Major League Baseball with a new seven-year agreement that maintains Turner Sports’ access to post-season games and will create a Tuesday-night broadcast that seeks to emulate the Thursday-night franchise Turner has built with the NBA.
The new agreement will be in effect between 2022 and 2028.
WarnerMedia is expected to pay $3.7 billion, or around $535 million a year, over the course of the agreement, according to people familiar with the matter. The new pact represents an increase of approximately 65% over the company’s prior terms, which called for WarnerMedia to pay around $325 million per year, these people said.
“We’re delighted to extend our long-standing relationship with Major League Baseball and all of the opportunities this agreement offers us as we broaden our coverage of the game across all of our platforms,” said Jeff Zucker, chairman of WarnerMedia’s news and sports operations, in a statement. “We will...

Judge is the first Yankees player to receive the award since Derek Jeter in 1996, according to Espn. The 6-foot-7 athlete is also a finalist for the American League’s Mvp award.

The Major League Baseball Players Trust has announced it will provide $1 million in funding to support nonprofits dedicated to providing relief and recovery to the victims of the recent spate of natural disasters occurring across the Americas.
In keeping with its commitment and practice of assisting others when disasters strike, the Players Trust will distribute the funds in a manner that will support short-term relief as well as long-term recovery efforts in areas suffering in the wake of the recent hurricanes and earthquakes.
Major Leaguers are passionate about supporting the places where they work and live, and, for many Players, the disasters have devastated areas that so many of them call home. The nonprofits designated to receive portions of the $1 million in funding reflect Players’ places of residence, including Habitat For Humanity, Feeding America, Project Cure/Curando Mexico, Friends of Caritas Cubana and United Way Worldwide/Fondos Unidos de Puerto Rico.

The World Series opener was delayed for about seven minutes with one out in the bottom of the fourth inning Tuesday when Fox's video feed failed, causing both teams to lose access to their replay rooms. Umpires spoke with managers of both teams and also put on headsets, presumably to speak with Major League Baseball's replay center in New York. When play resumed, the U.S. telecast switched to the international feed. The U.S. broadcast returned at the start of the bottom of the fifth inning, after Curtis Granderson put the Mets ahead 2-1 with a homer off

50 Cent was on the mound, but not on the money. The rap star was comically off target when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch Tuesday night before the Pittsburgh Pirates played the New York Mets at Citi Field. Standing on the rubber 60 feet, 6 inches from home plate, 50 Cent wound up and launched a left-handed toss that sailed wide of Mets catcher Anthony Recker. The ball bounced to the backstop and nearly nicked a cameraman standing not too far from the Mets' on-deck circle, as 50 Cent and New York pitcher Jonathon Niese both smiled. It started just over a year ago. On September 1st 2011, the Boston Red Sox finished off their three-game series with their bitter rivals and Al East foes the New York Yankees knowing that whilst a defeat wasn’t a good thing, they would be leaving Beantown atop of the division regardless of the result. Nobody could have predicted then what fate awaited them less than a month later. After all, the Red Sox seemingly had the foundations in place for another tilt at the World Series, with many in the media tipping them to win it all and Espn analyst Bobby Valentine even going so far as to predict they’d “score 1,000 runs” on the season. Led by the best manager in the game, Terry Francona, and overseen by boy genius Gm Theo Epstein, life seemed pretty good for the Red Sox and their fans. That’s what made the events that followed so extraordinary.

The 2012 Mlb Home Run Derby takes place at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City on Monday, July 9, as part of Major League Baseball’s All-Star festivities. While many of the game’s best power hitters to skip the event — Josh Hamilton, Adam Dunn, Ryan Braun, Edwin Encarnacion, Curtis Granderson and David Ortiz are among the home run leaders not participating — there should still be plenty of souvenirs launched into the seats and plenty of annoying “Back! Back! Back!” calls from Espn’s Chris Berman. The New York Yankees’ Robinson Cano won the derby last year, hitting a final-round record 12 [...]...

The Yankees stars join an army of other celebs who’ve spoken out against bullying, on behalf of a film that already got more publicity than most documentaries before the MPAA changed the film’s R rating to a PG-13. The trailers are starting to make the rounds for the digested, regurgitated and over-incubated adaptation of Michael Lewis' best-selling baseball novel, Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game. Brad Pitt pushed for a film version of the novel, which highlights the change in direction of the Oakland Athletics under General Manager Billy Beane. The San Francisco Bay Area franchise was one of the highest spending clubs in the early parts of the 90s, but after owner Walter Haas died in 1995, the new ownership group slashed payroll and cut operating costs (apparently this sort of behavior isn't limited to the New York Knights or Charlie Sheen's Cleveland Indians).
Beane's strategies expanded upon statistical analysis with objective studies and regressions analysis and all sorts of mathematical approaches, embracing the field of "Sabermetrics". By developing a different idea about how baseball games were won, and a different idea about which...
