In his latest video, Kev takes to the booth to review Control, a tight claustrophobic sci-fi thriller starring Sara Mitich, George Tchortov and Evie Loiselle, which recently screened at Frightfest (check out our written review here).
With a fragmented memory and no clear way out, Eileen (Sara Mitich; Star Trek: Discovery) is forced to complete tasks by an unseen entity whilst trapped in a mysterious room, or else her daughter will be killed. However, nothing is truly as it seems, and very quickly, a much greater plot is unveiled – with Eileen at the centre.
Directed by James Mark, Control is set for a UK release on digital platforms on September 26th, courtesy of Signature Entertainment.

Saban Films will be giving director James Mark’s supernatural sci-fi thriller Control a theatrical release on September 23rd, with a VOD release to follow just four days later, on September 27th. In anticipation of those dates, a trailer has been released online and can be seen in the embed above.
Starring Sara Mitich, who is best known for playing Nilsson on Star Trek: Discovery, Control was directed by Mark from a screenplay he wrote with Matthew Nayman. The film, which is described as a “tense mashup between Cube and Lucy” tells the following story:
A mother locked inside of a stark room is tasked by an unknown voice to complete increasingly difficult challenges if she wants to save her daughter’s life. As the frequency and intensity of the tasks threaten to overwhelm her, she must piece together half-remembered chapters of her life before imprisonment if she wants to secure her freedom,...

Feeling somewhere between classic Canadian sci-fi Cube and the more recent Level 16, Control is a stunning film that plays things very small scale but ultimately ends up being an epic tale of sci-fi horror.
Locked in a mysterious room and commanded by an unknown voice, Eileen must complete several tasks in order to save her daughter’s life. As the tests and the stakes intensify to the point where succeeding seems well nigh impossible, Eileen is forced to discover she has some unexpected skills and kinetic powers. Armed with a new confidence and commanding forces, alone against an unknown army, she plans a daring escape…

There's been a recent trend of stunt coordinators making the move from performers to directors and the results have been largely successful (ahem John Wick and Atomic Blonde) and the trend is also spreading through the indie world and most recently, turning James Mark.
A former martial arts performer-turned stunt man, Mark has been working in the stunt world for over a decade but with Kill Order, he's made the jump to the director's chair in his first feature film.
Clocking in at 80 minutes, the movie is an action packed story of a teenager, played by Mark's equally talented brother Chris Mark, who discovers he has some very dangerous abilities and is being hunted by an organization that wants to kill him.

He has no name. Only purpose. Rlj Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for a sci-fi action movie from Canada titled Kill Order, which is actually about a student who has latent special powers. From the description, this sounds like some martial arts film from Hong Kong but it's actually made by a Canadian stuntman named James Mark, making his feature directorial debut. His stunt group, Team 2X, has started making films and this is one of their latest offerings. Chris Mark (James' brother) stars as a troubled high school student who gains superpowers when a group of armed men break into his classroom. The full cast includes Daniel Park, Denis Akiyama, Melee Hutton, Jessica Clement, Jason Gosbee, and Alain Moussi. This film is pretty much just a fun way to show off cool martial arts stunt skills, and not much else. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for James Mark's Kill Order,...

Next month, Tom Cruise and company will descend on the city of Pittsburgh to shoot One Shot, a Paramount Pictures crime thriller led by screenwriter and second-time director Christopher McQuarrie (Valkyrie, Way of the Gun).
The script, dated December 2010, may have changed some since McQuarrie touched up drafts by Josh Olson, but I thought we’d take a look any way (as we did with Pacific Rim).
The crucial first 20 pages read nearly identical to Lee Child’s original novel, save the obvious lack of details from adapting 376 pages into a brisk 123. A faceless driver maneuvers a van into a space in an expanding parking garage, marked off by a traffic cone, and makes his way through the construction to a vantage point above a crowded plaza. There, the man sets up his sniper rifle and opens fire on five unsuspecting citizens, then slips away in the chaos. The overwhelming...
