Sorrows abound as Hulu‘s dark costume dramedy The Great has been canceled following the recent release of its third season starring Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult. Debuting in 2020, the Emmy-winning series created by Tony McNamara (The Favourite) tells the origin story of Catherine the Great (Fanning) and tracks her progress as she works toward becoming Russia’s reigning 18th-century empress. Taking liberties with the historical figures, the show delivers zany and surreal elements alongside Catherine’s mission to take control after discovering the volatile and unpredictable nature of her new husband Peter (Hoult). (Credit: Christopher Raphael/Hulu) News of the cancellation was shared by Deadline. The show’s end comes as a bit of a surprise as Season 3 seemed to set up a new chapter for Catherine following [Spoiler] Peter’s shocking death in Episode 6. Along with winning the Emmy in 2020 for Outstanding Period Costumes, both Fanning and Holt received...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Great” Season 3, including the ending.]
Peter III did not live to be 295 years old, so he was going to have die at some point. The history books are murky on what actually led to the Russian emperor’s death in 1762. The version in “The Great” Season 3 is slightly more definitive, but like so much on that Hulu show, it’s more about perception than anything else. In a spring when surprise exits for central characters has led to many discussions about what shows do about what comes after, “The Great” has become a fascinating addition to the collection. How it bid adieu and what came next in the episodes that followed all speak to the strengths of a show that shouldn’t be flying under the radar.
After Peter (Nicholas Hoult) falls through the ice a little over halfway through Season 3 and past the point where it’s confirmed...

It’s always something. Either divorce is on your mind or your subjects may rise up against you. Welcome to the world of ambitious Catherine the Great (Elle Fanning) in the dark comedy The Great’s third season, which depicts (with some creative liberties) her 18th-century rule after dethroning defiant and often infantile husband Peter III of Russia (Nicholas Hoult). “We always try to have a couple of things that are a base for story, even if we tell it a little differently to how it happened,” says show creator Tony McNamara. Christopher Raphael/Hulu Of course, as a way to deal with a spouse she blames for her mother’s death, divorce may be an unsatisfying second choice. In the Season 2 finale, we saw Catherine murder “Peter”…only to find she had viciously stabbed his doppelgänger, Yemelyan Puga-chev (also played by Hoult). Which side of this extreme love-hate relationship will prevail?...

Filmmaker Guy Ritchie steps out of his comfort zone of flashy action scenes and characters with witty stylish dialogue to take on a down-to-earth, gritty, serious war story about loyalty and courage with Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant.
The film focuses on U.S. Army Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his unit hunting for Taliban forces in Afghanistan. During a routine checkpoint, the unit’s interpreter is killed when a bomb explodes. Back at the airbase, Kinley handpicks a new Afghan interpreter, Ahmed (Dar Salim), despite his reputation of being hard to get along with.
It’s not long before Kinley and Ahmed are strongly disagreeing on how to go about hunting the Taliban. On one dirt road search, Ahmed tells Kinley to stop and that they...

Jake Gyllenhaal and co-writer/director Guy Ritchie briefly discuss their new action film The Covenant in this short behind-the-scenes featurette. Ritchie describes the story as an inspiring concept of what one person’s prepared to do for another when push comes to shove.
Gyllenhaal, who plays US Army Sergeant John Kinley, adds: “Like any great action movie, at the heart of it is a real relationship and I think in the end you will be moved.”
The action thriller also stars Dar Salim (Game of Thrones), Antony Starr (The Boys), Alexander Ludwig (Heels), Bobby Schofield (Black Sea), Emily Beecham (1899), and Jonny Lee Miller (The Crown). Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies co-wrote the screenplay, and Ritchie, Atkinson, John Friedberg, and Josh Berger serve as producers. Samantha Waite, Olga Filipuk, Robert Simonds, and Adam Fogelson executive produce.
The R-rated drama opens in theaters on April 21, 2023.

Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan face off in action thriller The Foreigner. Director Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, Goldeneye) helms this suspenseful thriller that has a serious, emotional Chan bent on revenge after his daughter is killed in a politically motivated bombing in London, a man who turns his focused on an Irish-born British official, played by Pierce Brosnan, who may know the names of the bombers.
Although there is a daughter and Jackie Chan’s character does have an unexpected “special skill set,” that is about all this smart, gripping thriller has in common with Liam Neeson’s Taken apart from the genre. This revenge-driven action thriller has some surprising twists and provocative commentary on assumptions based on appearance.
