The films in the running for the 2022 Best Visual Effects Oscar are “Dune,” “Free Guy,” “No Time to Die,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” and “Spider-Man: No Way Home.” Our odds currently indicate that “Dune” (31/10) is the frontrunner, followed in order by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (4/1), “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” (4/1), “No Time to Die” (9/2), and “Free Guy” (9/2).
Included among the 19 individuals are 12 past nominees, four of whom have triumphed at least once. The seven first-timers are Brian Connor (“Dune”), Nikos Kalaitzidis (“Free Guy”), Sean Noel Walker (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”), and pairs Joel Green and Charlie Noble (“No Time to Die”) and Scott Edelstein and Chris Waegner (“Spider-Man: No Way Home”).
Connor’s three fellow “Dune” nominees – Paul Lambert, Tristan Myles, and Gerd Nefzer – have each won this award at least once before. Lambert and Nefzer prevailed in 2018 for “Blade Runner 2049,...

“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” is one of two Marvel superhero movies in the mix this year for Best Visual Effects at the Academy Awards. It’s a visually compelling introduction to a lesser-known Marvel Comics hero, as played by Simu Liu. Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, this martial arts and fantasy spectacle was also the highest grossing movie of 2021 until along came a certain “Spider-Man” movie.
Just like many nominees in the Visual Effects category, “Shang-Chi’s” nominated team is a mix of previous contenders. A VFX vet for over 20 years, Christopher Townsend was a mainstay at Industrial Light and Magic (Ilm) for half that time. He’s also been involved with the VFX for quite a few Marvel movies, having previously received Oscar noms for “Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2” and “Iron Man 3.” Dan Oliver’s previous nomination in this category was for...

Fans of Showtime's Ray Donovan will know Johnathon Schaech from his turn as the unfortunate Sean Walker in season 1, but he's also starred in numerous other TV series and movies over the years - including Tom Hanks' directorial debut, That Thing You Do. Tonight Johnathon makes his first appearance as Jonah Hex on Legends of Tomorrow, and he was kind enough to take the time to chat to us about his passion for Hex, possible future plans for the character, and much more. Cbm: Tell us a little about how you wound up nabbing the role of Jonah Hex, and were you aware of the character beforehand? Js: Yes, I grew up reading Jonah hex westerns and Sgt. Rock war comics. I auditioned and won the role, the description I was given read: "Late 30s-50s. A true legend of the Old West, a morally ambiguous gunslinger with a penchant for danger.

"I dunno, find something. Just call the ambulance". I’m not sure how intentional it was, but Ray finally found, in this climactic episode of the season, that his ability to ‘fix’ things had left him. It was his natural territory too – a nefarious act that had turned out contrary to expectations and had left a couple of corpses and a bleeding Federal Agent. Still, Ray, wrong-sided by the course of events had little else to do but get his ass out of there and leave someone else to sweep things up.

1.11 Bucky Fuckin' Dent
In his latest review of Breaking Bad, our own Paul Martinovic noted the use of death as a narrative short cut, a simple device that can be used to adjust the audience’s sympathy towards a character. There is another, somewhat troublesome, shortcut that is occasionally deployed for similar purposes. It works in exactly the same manner but with one tiny exception. Some fictional deaths occur through accident or unavoidable disaster. There isn’t always a villain involved. That is not the case with sexual abuse.
The shadow of child abuse has hung over Ray Donovan from the outset. We’ve primarily seen the after-effects through the situation of Bunchy, his alcoholism and self-hatred, his...

1.10 Fite Nite
You see, it can be done. As I said last week, one of the problems with Ray Donovan, indeed, possibly its defining problem, is its lack of structural tension. It has some solid ideas at its core but they’ve been too easily dismissed by a tendency to add more extraneous details, which are then easily abandoned with scant regard for narrative justification. When it strips things down to its bare bones, it’s a much leaner and far more effective show. I’ve come to believe that Ray Donovan is one of those programmes that would benefit from a massive budget cut for its second season. I mean this not as a punishment, but as a...

This was probably the least action-oriented episode of the season, but a whopper of a secret was revealed that gave us a lot of insight into the character of Ray Donovan. His motivations could be much different than I imagined, although given his nature, I'm surprised I never thought about the idea of the reveal before.
Almost the whole episode played out inside Fite Club, other than an initial scene where we learned Ezra was the legal guardian of Sean Walker's baby, with Mickey struggling to cover his ass in the murder of Sean Walker by using his love Claudette and Avi protecting Ray's family as he and Ray fully expected an onslaught of terror to reign upon them from Sully and friends.

1.9 Road Trip
Ok. You’ve spent the day with a guy who has impulsively married a transvestite in Las Vegas. You’ve seen him walk around shirtless and have dealt with the surprisingly minor aftermath of placing his, ahem, tallywhacker, in the hand of a woman he’s just met at a bar. Finally, you’ve had this same man receive a medically induced drug comedown at the hands of a doctor on your payroll. Now, who are you going to choose to take your beloved son to the Teen Choice Awards that very evening?
It says something that it is the Ray Donovan who has rediscovered his parenting impulses who does this. Remember, he was even worse a few weeks back.

Ray Donovan, Season 1, Episode 10: “Fite Nite”
Written by: Sean Conway
Directed by: Tucker Gates
Airs Sundays at 10 Pm (Et) on Showtime
Few things are more frustrating than seeing a series make the same mistakes, week in and week out. Ray Donovan chugs along towards its eventual conclusion, and what plagued those early episodes continues to plague “Fite Nite.” There’s been no improvements on the weak characterization, poor pacing, poor plotting and the total absence of believable actions taken by these characters.
Sadly, it spells certain doom for the season’s last two episodes.
“Fite Nite,” ideally, contains the perfect way to mesh all these myriad stories together. Every Donovan is supposed to show up and support Daryll, and bringing them all into the same place gives us a simple physical bridge for all these deviating plots. Yet Ray Donovan can’t help but deviate away, and in doing...

"Fite Nite" was another brilliantly subtle episode of Ray Donovan. I haven't been reading what other critics have been saying about the show, but some comments here lead me to believe that perhaps there is a feeling of disappointment in knowing what's going to happen on the show before it occurs.
That the emotions and absurdities of the story portray so much tension while deliberately dragging the viewer along a path scattered with hearty-sized bread crumbs is exactly why I find the writing so cunning. The writers, producers, directors and actors are all working together to bring life into a plot that isn't new, but seen through fresh eyes nonetheless.
For example, Ray was being too ostentatious on the day he planned to kill Mickey. As a viewer, we were all screaming in our heads that he shouldn't be doing the things he was doing: going to Fite Nite when...

To be true, I saw a lot of what occurred on "Road Trip" coming well before it happened, but that didn't make the impacts of the moves or the motivations behind them any less jolting as the episode played out.
This week Ray Donovan essentially focused upon three stories. Up first was the titular road trip Avi was making across the country from Boston to California with Sully and his gal pal, Katherine. The second plot line was Ray dealing with a day in the life of Tommy Wheeler as he promised Conor he would attend the Kid's Choice Awards as Tommy's guest. That turned out to me a much bigger obligation than Ray realized at first blush.
Last up was a collaborated event that shuffled through Mickey, Sean, Van and Ray as Van tried to make his move on Ray through Mickey and Ray tried to stop him through his FBi pal Frank.

"New Birthday" was a rather sedate episode of Ray Donovan, despite the fact that Ray got the crap beaten out of him, Bridget almost got raped, Abby was arrested and Ray put a hit out on Mickey. Apparently, in the land of the Donovans those things are pretty minuscule in the overall picture.
I missed the interaction of side characters like Ezra and Ray's brothers. Although we saw glimpses of Terry and Bunchy, their time on screen was diminished greatly due to Ray's trip to Boston. It took a lot of time to hunt down the elusive Sully we saw at the end of "Housewarming."
They gave us absolutely no indication what Sully did to become the FBI's most wanted man, but he's been in hiding for decades. Despite that, I kinda liked him. Maybe it's just that James Woods can make the most insane of characters seem appealing, but...

When The Event was being promoted last summer, the producers made a point of saying that the series would be different from ABC's failed FlashForward series. It turns out there were more unintentional similarities than they would have liked. Like FlashForward, NBC's The Event has been cancelled after one season on the air.
The Event follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) who's investigating the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. He slowly begins to uncover a huge cover-up that's beyond belief. Others in the cast include Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr., Taylor Cole, Lisa Vidal, Bill Smitrovich, Zeljko Ivanek, and Blair Underwood.

We are back and better than ever! Well, kinda. We are all better for The Cape hanging it up finally and getting The Event back to where it belongs. Apparently there will be less mythology and more strait drama/action going forward. That is fine, just less for me to write/speculate about. I am just happy that the show is back. Good news though: the posting of Dempsey’s office provided some juicy nuggets for consideration!
Some folks wondered about the logic of blowing up the satellite by Thomas shortly after sending the ominous message “preparations are underway for your arrival.” However, it makes sense if he was concerned about someone retrieving the satellite like we have done before via the Space Shuttle. My assumption is that someone will hijack Seti equipment to listen for the response.
Fun Facts:
Wow! Signal: The Wow! signal was a strong narrowband radio signal detected by Dr.

If the latest television ratings are an indicator, some viewers have dropped the suspenseful NBC Network program The Event from their list.
After a successful launch in September, the show started to see a steady decline so NBC decided to relaunch it this month. However, when the show made its return on Monday its viewership went down about 26% compared to its original air date.
The show follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) as he investigates the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. In his pursuit, he slowly discovers the biggest government cover-up in Us history.
Now, I have to admit…I’m a big Blair Underwood fan and seeing him play the President in this program was an added bonus. I stayed tuned for the first three episodes but, somehow, I lost interest. It did have a quasi-Lost vibe to it but later felt too convoluted.

The Event returned to NBC last night after three months in dry dock. Plotwise, the show is still a bit of a muddle. The aliens’ motivations are still impenetrably vague — we know where they’re from now, but precisely what they want is still a mystery. (At one point, someone actually said, “I will answer all the questions that you have. But First…” Argh, my brain!) Sean and Leila are still on a neverending road trip across America, in search of … something. It’s all a bit wearisome, but The Event is still worth watching, just because the cast is so talented.

Jason Ritter has claimed that The Event will begin to reveal "huge secrets" after its mid-season break. The series, which stars Ritter as fugitive Sean Walker, will return to NBC after a three-month break on March 7. "There's huge secrets revealed, which is very exciting," the actor explained in an official NBC interview. "I know a lot more than I did mid-season [and] we've only just started [filming again]. It's very, very exciting. [There's] a lot more mystery, a lot more answers and lot more action, too." He added that his character will be forced to change and harden as "more and more familiar things slip away". "Sean has basically had to man-up in a lot of ways," (more)...

The Event, last fall's sci-fi series currently on hiatus, had some strong plot lines and interesting conspiracy theories. It also had huge plot holes, ridiculous characterizations, and a superbly annoying flash-back flash-forward method of storytelling that drove viewers up a tree. Happily, Blair Underwood (who plays President Martinez) stated today, in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, that the show is finished using the flashback device. As of their return for the second half of season one, the story will be told straight through without any 'confusing' flashbacks.
While it is great that the writers of the show actually listened to fan complaints and reacted in an appropriate way, why must they refer to the flashback device as confusing? It wasn't confusing; it was annoying. It was a symptom of underestimating the intelligence of the audience to the point of insult. So yay! Let's see what the show is like revamped.

The executive producer of The Event has revealed that the character of Sean Walker will alter dramatically in future episodes. Evan Katz told TV Line that the computer programmer (played by Jason Ritter) will undergo a "radical transformation" when the show returns from its current hiatus. The Event star Jason Ritter has revealed that viewers will discover more about his character Sean Walker in future episodes. He told The Deadbolt that aspects of Sean's past would be revealed in a potential second season. "I know that the writers are planning to get into that, and that's a whole plan for the future," he claimed. "But we haven't gotten there yet. I think that we'll probably get there in the next season. We haven't found out too much yet. But we absolutely will in the future, I promise you that." The actor also admitted that he enjoys not knowing what lies in store for his character. "I (more)...

In tonight’s mid-season finale, Jason Ritter and Sarah Roemer promise a total shake up of the series, The Event.
And from the sounds of it, it may something worth checking out.
The two star as Sean Walker and Leila Buchanan, currently on the run and dashing through cornfields trying to stay out of sight.
Even though the two actors know almost as much as the audience does, they love the mystery surrounding the show. And they both say that not knowing what the actual event is, makes it easier for them as actors.
I talked to them in a conference call about keeping the secrets they do know, their chemistry and the challenges of working on such a huge show.
Can you talk about how you both find the right chemistry with only knowing so much about what’s to come? Like does that help keep things off balance for you guys?...

Tonight marks the last episode of The Event for 2010. NBC plans to relaunch the series in three months, on February 28th, after letting their new series The Cape have the timeslot. Is it a risky move? Not really. Ultimately, they don't have much choice.
The Event follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter), a young man who's investigating the mysterious disappearance of his girlfriend. He slowly begins to uncover the biggest cover-up in the history of the United States. Others in the cast include Sarah Roemer, Laura Innes, Ian Anthony Dale, Scott Patterson, Clifton Collins Jr., Taylor Cole, Lisa Vidal, Bill Smitrovich, Zeljko Ivanek, and Blair Underwood.
The series debuted in September to decent ratings with a 3.6 in the 18-49 demo and 10.88 million total viewers. That's a healthy sampling but, considering all of the promotion that NBC put behind it, the programmers were...

I've had choices
Since the day that I was born
There were voices
That told me right from wrong
If I had listened
No I wouldn't be here today
Living and dying
With the choices I made
I was tempted
By an early age I found
I liked drinkin'
Oh, and I never turned it down
There were loved ones
But I turned them all away
Now I'm living and dying
With the choices I made
(Repeat Chorus)
I guess I'm payin'
For the things that I have done
If I could go back
Oh, Lord knows I'd run
But I'm still losin'
This game of life I play
Living and dying
With the choices I made
(Repeat Chorus)
Living and dying
With the choices I made
The words of George Jones ring so very true, over and over again during this weeks episode. Here we go!

This article may contain spoilers. With aliens, a real life dollhouse with living dolls and wormholes, "The Event" has entered the Twilight Zone. When lovers Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) and Leila Buchanan (Sarah Roemer) heard that there were aliens walking amongst us, they were incredulous to the point of flat-out disbelief. Looking through their lens, it sounded impossible. Yet, in the world of "The Event," all bets are off and anything goes. There are aliens amongst us. They may look like us and are nearly identical in DNA, but they are still not of this Earth. With the masterful escape of Sophia (Laura Innes), aided by Thomas (Clifton Collins, Jr.), they join the other Ebe's (extraterrestrial biological entities) hiding in plain sight. The only hiccup in their escape plan was Simon's ...

Which they find, in the form of a creepy, agitated, conspiracy-theory-loving journalist.
Sophia, released to a subway train, finds a change of clothes and a cell phone in the car. As is the case with every great Halloween costume, the trick isn't to look the part. It's to act the part. Get the acting part down, and no one will second guess who you are.

It’s come time for the early season payoff of “The Event,” in which Sean Walker and President Martinez show us exactly why they’re the heroes of this show. If this were “24,” this would be the episode where Jack kills the mid-level bad guys and seemingly solves the country’s crisis. Of course, this merely marks the point in the season where we head further down the rabbit hole; Jack would discover that the apparent threat was just a distraction from something much more sinister. Sean and Martinez will be in a much worse situation soon, to be sure, but for now...

"The Event" got some good news Monday (Oct. 18) -- it's been picked up for a full season. We hope that means the show can more confidently plot out its season and lead to better stories down the line.
Any difference the pickup does make, however, won't show up for a while. As for the here and now, "The Event" is starting to feel like two wholly separate shows. Each of them has its compelling moments, but the two primary stories don't have a lot of connective tissue between them at the moment.
One show -- the one that took up the bulk of Monday's episode, "Casualties of War" -- has the president of the United States dealing with a rogue alien (and after what we saw tonight, that seems about the only explanation, right?) demanding the release of the rest of his people. Late last month, Laura Innes spoke to TV Fanatic about her character on The Event and what we can expect as this season progresses.
Now, co-star Jason Ritter has done the same, as he previews what's on tap for Sean and gives us an idea of whether or not The Event will actually take place this year...
Does Sean know more than he's letting on?
Not about the conspiracy or the detainees. At this point his mind is spinning and he’s certainly trying to put the pieces together of how a plane can disappear and show up across the country a few seconds later, and so his mind is being opened... he’s the character who’s learning about everything as it goes along, just like the audience.
Will Sean and Leila ever reunite?
I can say that at the end of episode five, it’s a completely different show.

You have to hand it to the Yanks, because when they do drama, they do it big. Hailed as the new Lost (or Heroes, or FlashForward, or something), The Event sees everyman Sean Walker (Jason Ritter) unwittingly uncovering a huge government cover up. We would recommend you keep camomile tea, a warm flannel and eyedrops to hand for the start of Channel 4's new acquisition, or else you're not going to cope with the absurd pace of this new sci-fi thriller.

So far, we are three episodes into ABC’s sci-fi thriller, The Event. In a show where questions are answered by more questions, it would help to know who really is the key to understanding the whole story, wouldn’t it? Actor Jason Ritter, who plays Sean Walker, a fugitive from the law And whoever is behind the presidential assassination attempt, says that his character’s kidnapped girlfriend, Leila (Sarah Roemer), and her family is the key:
“I think [the conspiracy] actually has more to do with Leila and her family than with Sean. We haven’t really gotten into where Leila works and what she does for a living. I think that has a lot to do with it.
[Michael (Scott Patterson)] might not be the family man that’s put in the terrible position that he appears to be in the first couple episodes. He might have some secrets of his own.”

Can we trust him?
Agent Collier weighed the question. It is a question we ought to be asking ourselves. Should we believe Blake Sterling? What are Raymond Jarvis' intentions? Is Simon Lee credible? Should we place our trust in Sean Walker?
After this episode we know we cannot even trust the expert opinion of a highly trained medical doctor regarding the most fundamental state of a human body. It goes without saying that we never should have trusted a group of men in dark suits to be the federal agents they claimed they were.
Most importantly, we should not expect that the truth shall rise from the 183 re-animated bodies that had been awaiting shipment to Brazil. A week ago Thomas said of the Avias 154 passengers, "We can use them." Now we understand those words. The 183 are neither statement of purpose nor threat of escalation. They are not present objective, but future potential.

I think I figured out the secret behind The Event: It is perhaps the silliest television show that I’ve ever watched on television that attempts to create the illusion of taking itself seriously. But here’s what I respect about The Event’s silliness—it absolutely owns it. Take, for instance, the scene last night where Sean Walker snuck into the F.B.I. field office in the trunk of an agent’s car. I know this guy is supposed to be good with computers, but when did he get the ability to sneak into a government agency (undetected!) by riding in an agent’s trunk? How did he even get into the trunk? No explanation is ever given. He’s just in there, somehow. Or the scene where Leila threatens Vicky, “I told you Sean would come back for me.” Are we supposed to take this as a threat?...

If I was at all preoccupied with figuring out what The Event is, last night's whirlwind hour of implausible plot twists had me very distracted.
How did Sean Walker wind up in a cheap motel room with a female FBI agent handcuffed to a bed? His girlfriend, tied up and thrown into the back of a van would like to know, but she's in the midst of a bitch slapping contest with her old drinking buddy, Vicky. But I'm getting ahead of myself here.
The episode opens with Sean and his two new FBI BFFs headed back to the Yuma field office, except there's a problem. That plane crash that Walker keeps yakking about in the backseat while the two agents keep begging him to shut up? Well, it's blocking the road ahead. Of course, that's not what the state trooper manning the roadblock says. No, it's just a jack-knifed gas tanker or some such.
