Chromeo have announced their new album Adult Contemporary, out on February 16th, 2024. Along with the news, they’ve shared another single called “Personal Effects.”
Now nearly 20 years into their time as a band, Adult Contemporary sees Chromeo’s Dave 1 (Dave Macklovitch) and P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel) “exploring what it means to be funky in your 30s and 40s.” The album’s 14 tracks — which also include singles “Replacements” and “(I Don’t Need A) New Girl” — attempt to navigate mid-life relationships, riding all the ebbs and flows into a new chapter.
“Personal Effects” is funky indeed, built on a disco-inspired bass line and embellished with sleek synths. On it, Chromeo meditate on the immediate lingering aftermath of a breakup: “She knew just what she was doing/ Leaving her personal effects behind/ I know I’ll find them one night and she’ll probably be on my mind,” Dave 1 sings, perhaps alluding...

Given her fierce ambition and penchant for playfulness, Ellie Goulding is quite the complex pop songstress.
And in her July 2015 cover story for Elle UK, the “Burn” singer discusses how she dealt with fame at age 23- “When I started out, I couldn't cope with it. I didn't quite know who I was supposed to be. I was never confident in my looks. I hated my chin, my nose, my eyebrows. I was told by people at my record company to watch videos of other girls, like Little Boots, and Elly Jackson from La Roux, and try and look like them. I had panic attacks so bad I couldn't leave my flat; I couldn't bear people looking at me. I would worry that I would never be able to sing because I couldn't even get up. Elton John continues to surprise, this time by joining Queens of the Stone Age on their upcoming album. Dave Grohl reported the news, which is perhaps not totally shocking when one realizes John's class of many collaborators includes the likes of Kanye West, Bonnie Raitt and Don Henley.
On Wednesday, the Foo Fighters' frontman and Nirvana alum revealed the news on Chelsea Handler's late-night program. Grohl is the featured drummer on the Qotsa project.
Here's what John had to say about the Stone Age collaboration, via NME:
"I was in Vegas and I flew back to La and Engelbert Humperdinck had written me a very sweet letter and asked me to sing a duet with him. He is part of my history and I couldn't say no so I went and recorded a song with him. Then I drove three blocks and went from Engelbert to Queens Of The Stone Age,...

When an artist cites Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux and '80s Madonna among their influences, it's difficult not to build up high expectations. Dorset-born BeBe Black has been "honing her craft" (translation: faffing about a bit) since 2011, where she apparently peddled a soulier version of what she does now, which in truth sits far more comfortably with her musical palette. Her new Ep 'Deathwish' serves as a taster to what we can expect from her this year, which is somewhere in the region of electronic soul-pop. Title track 'Deathwish' is moody midtempo that blends defiant piano chords with thumping electro and a chorus that channels La Roux's Elly Jackson. Fortunately, her rich voice is perfectly (more)...

La Roux's Elly Jackson has revealed that their new album is "sexier". The singer admitted that they have gone for a "cheekier" sound than their self-titled debut, but maintained that it is sexy without being aggressive. Jackson told NME magazine: "It's a lot cheekier. Not 'Touch my Bum' cheeky or Carry On cheeky - just slightly suggestive. "The music is a lot sexier. A lot of music that's quite sexual is aggressive, but the music itself doesn't sound sexy - it's more people shouting, 'Look at my bum! Look!' I'm not turned on by it, I'm terrified." Jackson also confessed that she feels pressured to match the critical and commercial success of 2008's La Roux, but is not prepared (more)...

From Taylor Swift's major-category shutout to the army of collaborators on Kanye's 'All of the Lights,' we take a closer look at this year's nods.

The big headline out of Wednesday night's "Grammy Nominations Concert Live!!" event was that Kanye West came away with the night's gaudiest number at seven nods. He bested heavily tipped Grammy bait Adele, who scored six, tying her with veteran rockers Foo Fighters and Bruno Mars, with Lil Wayne and party-starting DJ Skrillex just behind at five.
Yes, there were some surprises, such as Justin Vernon's sedate folkie solo project Bon Iver snagging four nominations and British tweed revivalists Mumford & Sons rolling up an equal amount. But it's some of the other facts and figures we were more interested in.
So enjoy the 2011 Grammy nominations, by the numbers:

HollywoodNews.com: Kanye West and Jay Z‘s CD, “Watch the Throne,” isn’t the mega hit that was hoped for. Universal Music/DefJam angered record stores (what’s left of em) and download services like amazon.com because it gave ITunes a four day jump on downloads last week. The result, according to hitsdailydouble.com, was sales of 290,000. The album saturated its market quickly. Total sales are expected around 425,000– much lower than previously estimated. I know it sounds old and curmudgeonly, but why make an album if everything on it comes from somewhere else? Such is the case with Jay Z and Kanye West’s “Watch the Throne.” It’s chock full of samples musically. Lyrically, it’s everything we’ve come to expect from over-indulged rappers with little to go on about except their own lives in the material world. It’s all about Rolls Royce Corniches, Champagne,...

When I was in college, I used to be disgusted by the nightclub "system" -- bouncers who sniffed at nice people who didn't know how to dress or act arrogant enough, promoters who felt great because women talked to them without realizing they were just another number in a bejeweled iPhone. And though I'd go, from L.A. to Vegas to New York, it became my own personal, completely unimportant battle.
Listening to Watch The Throne, the more-than-hotly-anticipated collab album between Kanye West and Jay-z, reminded me of this sort of indignant, somewhat adolescent struggle, the sense that some things that everyone believes in just aren't right. This is, in a way, the Kanye Method. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy spent all of the songs that aren't dancey club hits (and some of that are) lamenting how good guys can be wrong, and how no one wants to forgive them (see "Power,...

From synth pop to Hollywood remakes to collecting manual typewriters, we're busy plundering the past. But why the fatal attraction?
There's no single thing that made me suddenly think, Hey, there's a book to be written about pop culture's chronic addiction to its own past. As the last decade unfolded, noughties pop culture became steadily more submerged in retro. Both inside music (reunion tours, revivalism, deluxe reissues, performances of classic albums in their entirety) and outside (the emergence of YouTube as a gigantic collective archive, endless movie remakes, the strange and melancholy world of retro porn), there was mounting evidence to indicate an unhealthy fixation on the bygone.
But if I could point to just one release that tipped me over the edge into bemused fascination with retromania, it would be 2006's Love, the Beatles remix project. Executed by George Martin and his son Giles to accompany the Cirque du Soleil spectacular in Las Vegas,...

After months of the highly pumped up and much hyped promise of the short film of Kanye West’s relationship with a fallen angel/phoenix that was really a bit of a letdown, comes out of nowhere a music video clip for All of the Lights. Runaway (the short film) had a trailer that sucked you in and left begging for more as even I followed the status of the updates of premieres, screenings and the release upon this site to an exhaustive state.
This track appeared to be so underused or rather misused in the clip as I felt it was the most off-putting visual accompaniment of Runaway as it looked a bit rushed as it smudged all over the place. Thus Hype Williams who wrote the script for the entirety of that work has returned to fix the mistake by giving us an incredible take on the song.
