The most recent edition of Doctor Who Magazine reveals that the first block of Series 14 will be directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, a young British screenwriter and director whose first major TV job was on M Night Shyamalan’s Apple TV+ horror series Servant. Starring Rupert Grint and Lauren Ambrose, that’s the story of a couple who hire a nanny to look after a reborn doll, opening their home to a mysterious force.
Between 2016 and 2019, Holmes Williams released three horror shorts that captured the film world’s attention. The Nightmare on Deskteeth Street is the story of a boot obsessive on a mission to retrieve his favourite pair, Stilts is set in a dystopia where everybody is forced to wear huge metal stilts, and The Devil’s Harmony is about a teenager who forms a Glee Club to wreak revenge on her high school enemies. This A Discovery of Witches review contains spoilers.
Tell me, how was dinner? Before diving back to the gloomy past, A Discovery of Witches took a gulp of fresh air in the modern day and dropped in on Sept-Tours. With Sarah and Em there under Ysabeau’s protection, the table was being laid for what promised to be a primo scene between the mortal-enemies-turned-housemates. And then… pouf, nothing. It was straight back to the 16th century for another round of bad Matthew. Fingers crossed that the characters we invested in from season one are better served in future episodes.
Satu’s quest to learn about her powers and destiny, for instance, is worth more to fans of season one than political Elizabethan intrigue. Right now though, Satu’s story is only being used as a parallel to Diana’s own search – the dark witch and the light, both seeking answers about their destiny.

Warning: contains mild plot details for A Discovery of Witches Season 2 Episodes 2 & 3
Alongside the sulky real-life Elizabethan playwrights and gruff spymasters of A Discovery of Witches’ second season shines one leading light: Mary Sidney. Styled the Countess of Pembroke following her 1577 marriage to Henry Herbert, Mary Sidney was a celebrated figure in Tudor society with several published works to her name, and close connections to the royal court of Queen Elizabeth I.
Played in the series by Amanda Hale, Mary Sidney becomes Diana’s ally during her and Matthew’s Elizabethan time-walk. A beneficiary of the fashion for aristocratic women’s education in the mid-sixteenth century, the Countess is Diana’s intellectual equal, and makes a useful companion for the history of science professor. Born in 1561, Mary Sidney would have been around Diana’s age when they meet in 1590. She conducts alchemical experiments with ‘Mistress Roydon’, aids in her search for the Book of Life,...

Univision Communications reached a deal to sell Gizmodo Media Group and The Onion to private-equity firm Great Hill Partners for an undisclosed amount.
With the sale, Great Hill will form a new company called G/O Media Inc., headed by digital content industry vet Jim Spanfeller, who also will be a “significant investor” in the company. The sale puts an end to Univision’s bid — under then-ceo Randy Falco — to diversify beyond its Hispanic broadcasting core business into what it had hoped would be a fast-growing, young-skewing mass digital play.
Terms of the all-cash deal weren’t disclosed. According to person familiar with the deal, Great Hill is paying considerably less than the $135 million that Univision paid in August 2016 for the Gawker assets in a bankruptcy auction, (which didn’t include Gawker.com). Univision acquired a 40% stake in The Onion in January 2017.

Gawker is poised to make a comeback next year, according to published reports. The gossip site, which was sued into bankruptcy two years ago by Silicon Valley billionaire Peter Thiel, was acquired by the founder of Bustle Digital Media, Bryan Goldberg.
In a memo obtained by Variety, Goldberg outlined his plans for bringing back the blog in the first half of 2019.
“We won’t recreate Gawker exactly as it was, but we will build upon Gawker’s legacy and triumphs — and learn from its missteps. In so doing, we aim to create something new, vibrant, highly relevant, and worth visiting daily,” Goldberg wrote in a memo to the Bustle Digital Media staff.
Goldberg said he hired Amanda Hale, the former chief revenue officer of The Outline, as Gawker’s new publisher. No word yet on editorial hires or what will become of Gawker’s archive...

Starz latest adaptation of Philippa Gregory's Cousins War saga is a true gem.
The White Princess Season 1 Episode 1 picks up just a day after The White Queen ended, and the York women find themselves in a precarious position as they face life in a radically changed England.
I'm going to be upfront with you: I couldn't decide if I should review as if this show is a "stand alone" and ignore The White Queen, or take the prequel series into account. I'm going to try to split the difference; hopefully, I'll be able please devoted fans and first-timers alike!
The White Princess is off to a wonderful start. Showrunner Emma Frost has built a world rich in detail. The production filmed at several historical sites, which really enhances the feel of the show.

Starz is making waves with its new TV series ‘The White Queen,’ a 10-part show about the battle for a throne. Sound familiar? The new show definitely takes a few cues from the massively popular ‘Game of Thrones,’ but could it actually be better?
Everyone loves medieval dramas, right? That’s the theory that Starz is driving on with their newest show (in conjuction with BBC), The White Queen. Set in 15th century Great Britain, the show adds fierce drama to the already sensational War of the Roses, a 30-year-long feud between rival factions for the British throne. Shows like The Tudors, and to some degree Game of Thrones, found success with this model and form, so is The White Queen the next huge TV hit? See what the critics thought!

It's never been easy to be a widow, but in the late Middle Ages, a mother left without a husband faced a future fraught with peril for herself and her children. And when that woman was in the middle of a national struggle, it took an extraordinary kind of courage and intelligence to not only survive but to rise.
Premiering Saturday, Aug. 10 (with an advance screening on Friday, Aug. 9) on Starz, the 10-episode limited series "The White Queen" is set in pre-Tudor Britain in 1464, as the nation is embroiled in the Wars of the Roses, a series of dynastic conflicts between the related Houses of Lancaster (symbolized by the red rose) and York (symbolized by the white rose).
The story focuses on British commoner Elizabeth Woodville (Rebecca Ferguson), the widow of a supporter of the House of York with two young sons. Through a twist of fate, she is introduced...

"The White Queen," a 10-part period drama premiering on Starz tomorrow, August 10 at 8pm, looks at a well-chronicled moment in history through the perspective of the characters whose stories are not often told -- the women. Based on three novels from "The Cousins' War" series by Philippa Gregory (the author of "The Other Boleyn Girl"), "The White Queen" follows a trio of women during the Wars of the Roses in the 15th century -- Elizabeth Woodville (Rebecca Ferguson), consort to Edward IV (Max Irons); Lady Margaret Beaufort (Amanda Hale), the highly religious mother of Henry Tudor, later Henry VII; and Lady Anne Neville (Faye Marsay), the Earl of Warwick's daughter. As the men battle with swords, the women make use of the weapons allowed them -- ones of words, court politics, alliances, seduction and manipulation. It's a feminine take on history, but no less one about a fight for survival and power.

The White Queen’s penultimate episode is dark, desperately watchable stuff. Why did it take so long to get this good?
This review contains spoilers.
What a pity it is for The White Queen to have hit its stride only this late in the game. The penultimate episode, with its shadowy plots, simmering guilt and double crosses, was such smashing telly that our one remaining visit to the fifteenth century on a Sunday night doesn’t seem enough. Who’s for joining me in whipping up a frock from the dining room curtains and staging a saints’ knees flash mob outside Media City until the BBC promises to return next year with The White Queen 2: Lancastrian Boogaloo?
Episode nine’s focus on a single plot - the fate of the Princes in the Tower - made for particularly satisfying viewing. Not only is...

Why isn't anyone in The White Queen having any fun? Here's Louisa's review of a fraught third episode...
This review contains spoilers.
What a joyless lot these Lancastrians and Yorks are. Turgid script problems aside, what The White Queen is really lacking is a character who has any kind of fun. Episode three was wall-to-ceiling moaning, worrying, and flaccid scheming, with some childbirth tragedy thrown in to really take the shine off your Sunday night supper.
Take plotting Warwick, who’s abandoned his early promise as cape-swishing camp villain to have a thankless time of it as the leader of comically short and unsuccessful revolts. Once daily, it seems, Warwick and George ride off together smirking about rebellion, only to return home with their hands in their pockets to tut, kick grass clods, and mutter about stupid Edward and his stupid supporters. “We’ve...

The BBC and Starz visit the Wars of the Roses for new Sunday night historical drama, The White Queen…
This review contains spoilers.
The Starks and Lannisters having left us for another year, the BBC is filling the void with the original players of the game of thrones: the Yorks and Lancasters. A ten-part adaptation of Philippa Gregory’s celebrated The Cousins’ War series, The White Queen takes place in the twenty years between the Battles of Hexham and Bosworth, but is less interested in clashing armies than it is power struggles between the Wars of the Roses’ royal women.
Taking in the events of a trio of novels - The White Queen, The Red Queen, and The Kingmaker’s Daughter - the drama tells three stories, those of Elizabeth Woodville (beautiful and a bit witchy), Margaret Beaumont (devout and a bit mental), and Anne Neville (a pawn,...

The final episode of Ripper Street’s first series seemed like it would be a tense mismatch of Captain Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg) seeking his freedom, following being set up by his former arch-nemesis Frank Goodnight (Edoardo Ballerini) to make it seem that Jackson was Jack the Ripper all along, and Edmund Reid (Matthew Macfadyen) finally having an episode focused upon the loss of his daughter, possibly even reaching a conclusion over her disappearance.
The episode opens with H Division divided. Many mourning the death of young Hobbs (Jonathan Barnwell), Jackson imprisoned, the usually symbiotic duo of Reid and Drake (Jerome Flynn) broken. Reid seeks solace in the bed of Miss Goren (Lucy Cohu) whilst his righthand-man Drake seeks solace in the bottom of many pints and Jackson is left in his cell alone apart from his thoughts and occasional visits from Reid.
