In the first trailer for Hulu’s musical comedy series “Up Here,” Mae Whitman and Carlos Valdes are young New Yorkers who meet and immediately click … if only they could both silence the voices in their heads telling them they’re doing everything wrong.
The series, from “Hamilton” director/producer Thomas Kail, is written by Tony-winning playwright Steven Levenson and Danielle Sanchez-Witzel (NBC’s “The Carmichael Show”) It is set to premiere March 24 on Hulu.
Whitman, who starred in NBC’s “Good Girls” from 2018 to 2021 and “Parenthood” from 2010 to 2015. plays idealistic Lindsay. Her musical career includes guest vocals with indie band Fake Problems and singing “Gardenia” with Landon Pigg on a 2010 episode of “Parenthood.”
Valdes, who played Cisco Ramon on The CW series “The Flash,” is the equally self-doubting Miguel. He’s appeared in stage productions of “Jersey Boys,” “Once,” and “Zorba!”

"Parenthood" fans, we hope you have plenty of tissues handy for this evening, as well as your alcoholic beverage of choice. (Hint: Ours comes in a box.)
"Trouble in Candyland" focuses heavily on Sarah as she leaves Mark behind to go to Los Angeles with Hank. The tension that's been building in her romantic entanglements over the course of the season finally hits a breaking point, and the choices that the characters make may surprise you. Meanwhile, Ryan starts a new job with Joel, but finds himself in over his head, and Julia dedicates herself to getting Victor caught up in school.
Here are five more fun (and not-so-fun) things you can look forward to in tonight's game-changing new episode. Tune in at 10 p.m. Est on NBC.
1. Stoned Kristina! Kristina's cancer takes a backseat in this episode -- in fact, the brilliant Monica Potter is only in one scene...

Heroes of Ya literature collide as Percy Jackson’s Logan Lerman and Harry Potter’s Emma Watson find each other in the new trailer for The Perks of Being a Wallflower.
I’ll be honest and say this film doesn’t really look like my kind of thing, but it’s nice to see Emma Watson outside the walls of Hogwarts because she seems to be selecting her films with a careful eye these days. The Perks of Being a Wallflower is based on the book by the same name that was written by Stephen Chbosky, which is another reason I’m steering clear of this one. Being a writer doesn’t necessarily make a person a screenwriter, and sometimes having too much control over the adaptation can be a bad thing because what works on the page might fall flat on the screen.

I know you've all been anxiously awaiting the trailer to this coming of age movie The Perks of Being a Wallflower. The film stars Emma Watson (Harry Potter) and Logan Lerman (Percy Jackson), and it was directed by Stephen Chbosky who also wrote the 1999 novel that the film is based off of. The story follows a shy and unpopular naive outsider high school student "coping with first love (Watson), the suicide of his best friend, and his own mental illness while struggling to find a group of people with whom he belongs." It actually looks like a really good movie. It's also nice to see Watson in a role outside the world of Hogwarts.
The movie also stars Nina Dobrev, Mae Whitman, Johnny Simmons, Sarah Ramos, Ezra Miller, Erin Wilhelmi, and Landon Pigg. The movie comes out on September 14th. Watch the trailer, and let us know if you think it looks good!

New Party Game! In apropos of nothing, we’ve spent the last two days coming up with Celebrities Whose Names Sound Like Game Of Thrones Characters – meaning, actors, musicians, athletes, and other famous people whose real-life names contain some combination of fantasy-ness, pseudo-ethnicity, and juuust-slightly-offitude worthy of a bonafide Westeros inhabitant. Here are our favorite 50 Celebrity Names That Sound Like Game Of Thrones Characters, along with descriptions of who their names would be on the show (not who they’d be, just the names), ranked from 50 to 1 in order of Game Of Throneyness. Leave your own suggestions in the comments – we stupidly can’t get enough of these: 50. Baz Luhrmann Director of Moulin Rouge; Shifty mage apprentice to the warlock Pyat Pree 49. Jurnee Smollet Played Jess on Friday Night Lights; Homely Winterfell commoner who attracts Theon’s affections 48. Joaquin Phoenix Star of Gladiator and Walk The Line; Standard-Bearer of House...

This week's episode of "Parenthood" (Tuesdays at 10 p.m. Est on NBC) certainly brought a lot of tears, but the ensemble cast made up for it by releasing an adorable, smile-worthy music video set to a cover of Lfo's "Girl On TV," which Teen Vogue exclusively posted.
Musician Landon Pigg -- who is dating "Parenthood" star Mae Whitman, who plays Amber on the hour-long drama -- did a cover of the 1999 boy band hit and the Whitman's fellow cast members stepped in to make an accompanying music video.
Pairing off, the video mainly features Whitman, Miles Heizer (Amber's brother, Drew), Bonnie Bedelia (their grandmother Camille), Craig T. Nelson (her husband Zeek, the "Parenthood" patriarch), Savannah Paige Rae (Braverman cousin Sydney) and scene-stealer Tyree Brown (Jabbar, another Braverman cousin).
Long-time guest star Michael B. Jordan also lends some rapping skills to the track with his on-again-off-again on-screen girlfriend Sarah Ramos dancing in the background.

"Parenthood" fans are already familiar with singer-songwriter Landon Pigg. Not only have many of his songs served as background music to tearjerker scenes, but he also appeared as himself this season for a cameo at The Luncheonette, the recording studio owned by Crosby (Dax Shepard) and Adam (Peter Krause).
Now, as Season 3 winds down, Pigg has released this super-awesome video including the "Parenthood" cast, which you can watch below. It's a cover of Lfo's "Girl On TV."
The Pigg vid shows off the skills of real-life girlfriend Mae Whitman and her "Parenthood" co-stars Craig T. Nelson, Tyree Brown, Miles Heizer, Savannah Paige Rae, Bonnie Bedelia, Max Burkholder, Jason Ritter, Shepard, Krause, Erika Christensen, Rosa Salazar, Sarah Ramos, Sam Jaeger, and Lauren Graham.
Michael B. Jordan is even featured on the track, which is just the remedy to last night's completely heartbreaking episode.

Showing a lot of faith in its resident ginger, TBS has extended Conan O’Brien‘s late-night hit, Conan, through April 2014.
“I am excited to continue my run with TBS because they have been fantastic partners,” O’Brien said in a statement Wednesday. “This means I’ll be taping episodes of Conan well into the Ron Paul presidency.”
Conan debuted in November 2010, nearly a year after O’Brien’s controversial ouster from NBC’s Tonight Show.

Here are our first photos from the set of The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which is currently in production. Actor Logan Lerman just shared a bunch of photos from his Twitter. The photos give us our first look at Emma Watson, Nina Dobrev, Mae Whitman, Johnny Simmons, Sarah Ramos, Ezra Miller, Erin Wilhelmi, and Landon Pigg on the set. Check them out below and share your thoughts:
As you can see, there is a lot of down time on the set between scenes. These photos are making me hungry.
Stephen Chbosky directs the film, he also wrote the 1999 novel. The book “follows a shy and unpopular high school student who writes a series of letters to an anonymous penpal. Book gained attention for its mature exploration of the awkward times of adolescence.” Whitman joins the film as Mary Elizabeth, “a tattooed vegetarian who acts as the protagonist’s first girlfriend.

Logan Lerman tweeted some previews from the set of author/scribe/director Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower. This will be one of Emma Watson’s post-Potter vehicles, opposite Lerman (Percy Jackson), Mae Whitman (Scott Pilgrim vs. the World), Nina Dobrev, Paul Rudd, Erin Wilhelmi, Landon Pigg, Sarah Ramos, Ezra Miller, and Johnny Simmons.
Lerman tweeted, “The worlds foremost authority on style-miss emma watson!”

This past March 6th, I had the good fortune to attend the "Bohemian Dream"-themed party at Bardot Hollywood, which benefited the Young Storytellers Foundation, one of the cooler arts-based charities that I've ever heard of and certainly one I would have loved to come to my school as a child.
The Young Storytellers Foundation (http://www.youngstorytellers.com/) brings an incredible program to certain arts-poor Los Angeles area public schools: the nonprofit group invites entertainment industry professionals to the participating schools, who provide the students with a variety of tutoring in the art of storytelling. A significant portion of the program involves students writing their own screenplays and then having them performed by professional actors, including some genuine stars, a few of who acted as hosts...

The movie awards season always sets out to reward the excellence in the film world every year (culminating with the Oscars, whose nominations will be released on Tuesday morning, January 25), but considering most of the movies that come out over the course of a year are middling-to-terrible, there should also be awards that recognize failure as well. That's where the Razzies come in. For 31 years, the Razzies (or rather, the "Golden Raspberries") have been recognizing the worst in cinema every year. Past winners of Worst Picture include notorious busts like "Howard the Duck," "Hudson Hawk," "The Postman" and "Showgirls," and this year's nominees include problematic releases like "The Bounty Hunter," "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," "Sex and the City 2," "The Last Airbender" and "Vampires Suck." There are also awards for Worst Actor and Actress, Worst Screenplay and Worst Director (in addition to the new-this-year Worst Eye-Gouging Misuse of 3-D, which...

41 Songs were declared eligible for Oscar's least cinematically relevant prize a short while ago. Wheeee!
We only didn't share them yesterday because every single damn thing happens in the same week. I'd be more excited about this category if recent years hadn't seen the big show trending away from original performers singing their original songs. If I can't see Cher doing her Burlesque number(s) on Oscar night, someone is going down.
The Academy will choose up to 5 of these songs as nominees, depending on how their voting goes. I've included video accompaniment when available - listen (and watch up).
Which are you rooting for?
Please god no. No more honors for this eyesore movie.
"Alice" from Alice in Wonderland "Forever One Love" from Black Tulip "Freedom Song" from Black Tulip
oooh, now this is more like it. Sadly, it's only a partial video.
"Welcome to Burlesque" from Burlesque

We are only two months away from the Oscars, and members of the Academy are hard at work trying to decide who best deserves one of those five nomination slots.
Today, they released their shortlist for Best Original Song which tops out at an impressive 41 songs.
But we can already make an educated guess as to which five will be competition on Oscar night based on who the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards favored, and none of them involve Justin Bieber or Debbie Gibson.
“I See the Light” from “Tangled” earned a Best Song nod from both, as did “If I Rise” from “127 Hours” and “You Haven’t Seen the Last of Me” from “Burlesque.” Randy Newman’s “We Belong Together” from “Toy Story 3″ also seems a lock, since all of Newman’s songs for Disney/Pixar have scored nominations over the years.

The Shrek Forever After soundtrack starts as follows: Scissor Sisters, followed by Antonion Banderas doing a mystifyingly competent cover of Bob Marley’s One Love, followed by The Carpenters. If you can’t get down with that, you need to go see a getting down doctor.
A concept album with inter-track filler courtesy of Walt Dohrn as Rumpelstilskin (who seems to be playing Rumpelstilskin in his best David-St-Hubbins-from-Spinal-Tap accent), its ethos runs in parallel to that of the films: to be cheerful and child-friendly, with a fast-paced humour to appeal to the immature adult in all of us. And whilst many soundtrack albums are happy to fill up their track-listings with bargain basement contemporary schlock, the box office conquering Shrek franchise has the time and money to be a little more considered and considerate with its musical offerings. Thus an album ostensibly aimed at kids contains tracks from the Carpenters,...

A couple of years ago I watched a documentary about the Austin Roller Derby scene entitled Hell On Wheels and I immediately thought that it would make a fantastic fiction film. Very shortly after this I heard that there was indeed a film in production that focused on this new kind of Roller Derby. This week sees the release of the film, Whip It, in the UK. If you’re not familiar with the new Roller Derby movement I can highly recommend checking out Hell On Wheels. It focuses on the birth of a new more rock ‘n roll female Roller Derby in Austin Texas and beyond.
Whip It is the directorial début of Drew Barrymore and stars Ellen Page in the lead role. It is in many ways a coming of age film, focusing on the main character Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page), but it also draws in elements of romance,...

Whip It (2009) is Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut, and by all accounts it’s very good too. Set in the literally hard-hitting world of roller derby, Whip It tells the tale of Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) and her struggle to find acceptance in this merciless contact game along with some meaning in her life.
We have already covered the costumes in a short piece looking at the ‘vogue’ of roller derby (Here) with its totally original mix of sporting attire and fashion customisation. If Whip It had been a bigger hit in the States, possibly via more accurate marketing from its distributor, then this look would be all over the fashion pages by now. Hopefully when the film arrives in the UK early next month we can do it more justice. Just going to see the thing would be a good start.
Here, then, to get you in the mood...

When people get excited about something, they blossom and their affection can become contagious. Such is the case for screenwriter Shauna Cross, who stumbled across the world of roller derby and decided to get her story into print. She wrote it first as a young adult novel, Derby Girl and then managed to option it to Drew Barrymore’s production company. Barrymore loved the material so much she decided to turn it into her directorial debut.

Chicago – Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut “Whip It” is the kind of fun, girl-power driven comedy that I honestly expected would find a huge word-of-mouth audience in theaters. Its absolutely dismal box office ($13 million) was one of the biggest financial surprises of 2009. People are likely to catch up with the Ellen Page comedy on Blu-ray and DVD.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
“Whip It” is one of those films with a heart clearly in the right place and the kind of wildly enjoyable ensemble that makes storytelling flaws like predictability easier to overlook, especially in HD. “Whip It” is an easy to film to rip apart but it’s an ugly duckling comedy, an underdog that’s easy to root for and ignore critical analysis. Cynical movie goers should look away, but many, many people will find something to love in the story of Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) and her unusual coming-of-age adventure on wheels.

Drew Barrymore's Whip It (260 screens) opened seven weeks ago and still hasn't broken even on its initial cost. What's going on? When I walked out of the press screening, the critics were all buzzing about how much fun they'd had. The reviews were stellar: it has an 82% on Rotten Tomatoes. But somehow this critical enthusiasm just didn't translate for viewers. Something about tough chicks beating each other up during roller derby games just didn't appeal to the masses. Maybe it's because the movie is supposed to be set in Texas and was actually shot in Michigan. Maybe it's because our hero Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) was supposed to fall in love with a cute boy (Landon Pigg) who really wasn't very interesting, and you actually root for them to break up.

It's about as unlikely a Hollywood discover story as you'll hear: One second, you're a tousled, twentysomething singer-songwriter paying your dues in Nashville; the next, you're hand-selected by Drew Barrymore from a pool of hundreds to play Ellen Page's love interest in her first new film since Juno. If you're Landon Pigg, it could -- and did -- happen to you. No stranger to the ups and downs of making a career in show business, we caught up with Pigg in L.A. shortly before Whip It's opening weekend, as he readied himself to get back in a van and head out on a very no-frills cross-country tour.

The Whip It soundtrack. Not as easy as it looks, this soundtrack compiling malarkey. When I ruminated on which tunes might have trundled their way onto the tie-in record for Drew Barrymore’s roller derby-derived directorial debut Whip It, I got stuck at the grand total of two. The Devo number which shares its title with the Ellen Page-starring movie was one of course, while I also figured that a flick about female roller-skaters represented a most inviting opportunity to smuggle the Anna Karina-trilled/Serge Gainsbourg-penned power pop nugget Roller Girl onto the soundtrack of a major motion picture. But beyond that duo of offerings, I was clean outta ideas. No such difficulties for Whip It’s soundtrack supervisor and long-time Wes Anderson cohort Randall Poster though, as he has managed to er, whip up a 19 song-strong album that arrays veteran stagers next to bright young things,...

Director: Drew Barrymore Writer(s): Barry Mendel, Drew Barrymore Starring: Ellen Page, Marcia Gay Harden, Kristen Wiig, Drew Barrymore, Juliette Lewis, Jimmy Fallon, Daniel Stern Bliss (Ellen Page) is a misfit – at least as far as rural Texas standards are concerned – high schooler. Bliss’ mother (Marcia Gay Harden) wants Bliss to be a beauty pageant queen, just like she was; but when Bliss shows up at a beauty pageant with blue hair, we all know that Bliss doesn’t share her mother’s aspirations. One day, Bliss’ mother takes Bliss to Austin to do some shopping. She reluctantly agrees to buy Bliss a pair of combat boots, until she notices that the boutique also sells bongs. Bliss buys the combat boots with her own cash, and picks up a flyer on the way out…the flyer is for a female roller derby exposition match in Austin. Bliss drags her...

Whip It
Directed by: Drew Barrymore
Cast: Ellen Page, Kristen Wiig, Alia Shawkat, Marcia Gay Harden, Daniel Stern
Running Time: 1 hr 51 mins
Rating: PG-13
Release Date: October 2, 2009
Plot: Bliss (Page) wants more out of her small town life than the beauty pageants her mother pushes her toward. Bliss jumps at her chance to join the roller derby team, but then must live a double life so her parents don’t find out.
Who’S It For? Ladies who are sick of men getting all the roles in sports movies. Anyone who believes Page could be one of the best young actors working today.
Expectations: I like everyone involved in this film and I can harken back to a time when I used to watch roller derby on the USA network (I think) when I was a wee lad. It’s a great topic for the flick, so I was pumped.

We bought (and played) into the Whip It hype from the moment Drew Barrymore secured the rights to produce and direct Shauna Cross' young adult novel, Derby Girl. The female-directed, female-scripted, predominantly female-acted film opens in the theaters today, and after catching the sneak peek last weekend I can confidently tell you that with Whip It, Barrymore didn't make any promises she couldn't keep.
Whip It is a smash-and-bash, coming-of-age fairytale that is thoroughly predictable in every way, yet still manages to come off fresh. Maybe it's the infusion of rollicking feminist sentiment, or the girl-heavy soundtrack that swings easily between Tilly and the Wall and Dolly Parton. Or maybe it just feels good to occasionally watch someone get elbowed in the face on purpose.
For those of you who need a refresher: Whip It follows Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) as she lies about her age and goes against...

Stuck in a dead-end job in a no-pulse Texas town, 17-year-old Bliss Cavendar (Ellen Page) is miserable. Then, on a trip to Austin to buy clothes for the dreadful junior-miss pageants her mom (Marcia Gay Harden) keeps forcing her to enter, Bliss spots an ad for an upcoming all-girl roller-derby match — the Hurl Scouts versus the High Rollers. Sneaking away on the designated night, she catches the match, falls in love with the action, returns home to dig out her old pink Barbie skates, sneaks back to Austin, lies about her age, auditions for the Hurl Scouts and wins a place on the team. Soon her life, for the first time, begins to get interesting.

There are two kinds of first-time directors. There are the directors who have a vision, a story that is wrapped up in the tangles of their mind waiting to be presented via the medium of motion pictures. Then there are the directors who do it just because it seems the thing to do. They either admire the glamour and glory that comes from the profession and they want a taste, or they are already in the business and feel it is time for them to transition into the big chair. Judging by the new film, ‘Whip It,’ Drew Barrymore is in that latter of the latter choice, a first-time director who has worn a number of other hats in the industry and felt it was time to make her move. However, despite the force of an inventive story and commendable performances, that move she makes doesn’t seem to get...

Drew Barrymore moves slowly. After making her big-screen debut at the age of 5, the actress waited nearly three decades before grabbing hold of a director's chair and yelling, "Action!" for her feature debut.
Her maiden directorial effort, "Whip It," is anything but slow: It's 111 minutes of girl-on-girl roller-derby action, punctuated here and there with a "Juno"-esque turn (minus the pregnancy) from Ellen Page. Page plays Bliss Cavendar, a disaffected teen with a suffocated soul in a small town where conformity's the norm — and it sucks big time. Bliss ditches the beauty pageants her mom favors and hooks up with a rowdy crew of roller girls, including Barrymore, Kristen Wiig, Zoe Bell and Juliette Lewis.

Hollywood has become the host of a unique Los Angeles premiere of "Whip It!". On Tuesday, September 29, black carpet was rolled out in front of Grauman's Chinese Theatre to greet the oncoming celebrities, and it saw members of the L.A. Derby Dolls roller derby team skating down as well as performing stunts.
Black seemed to be the theme for the premiere as majority of the cast attending were seen in a dress or suit that is dominated with the dark color. Drew Barrymore, Ellen Page, Juliette Lewis, Eve, Zoe Bell and Landon Pigg were some of the cast members wearing black for the evening.
Coming also to the special screening event were their fellow cast mates, Alia Shawkat, Andrew Wilson and Daniel Stern, as well as executive producer Nancy Juvonen. Drew's boyfriend Justin Long, "Pineapple Express" actress Amber Heard, and "True Blood" actor Sam Trammell were also present.

Roller derby chick flicks aren't novel. I have fond memories from the '70s of catching endless TV replays of The Kansas City Bomber, with its vaguely kinky girl-on-girl aggression (it starred Raquel Welch, who wasn't quite an actress but knew how to get mad). So I was primed to see Whip It, the first movie directed by Drew Barrymore, with Ellen Page as a 17-year-old small-town Texas high school student (Page, with her elfin girlishness, will probably be playing 17-year-olds when she's 37), who lies about her age in order to join the Hurl Scouts, a roller derby team based in Austin. Barrymore is such a nice, sweet person that you may wonder how she could possibly have directed a movie about demon women on wheels whose primary athletic activity consists of bashing each other's bodies. Here's how. Whip It is a nice, sweet roller derby movie. There's no edge to it,...

Drew Barrymore has given her ex-boyfriend Fab Moretti's new band a boost - she has picked them to perform on the soundtrack to her directorial debut.
The actress compiled the hit list of songs that will appear during her new roller derby film Whip It - and insisted her former lover's group Little Joy should be included.
She tells Billboard.com, "What was so exciting was to finally get to make a film that I could make an ultimate mixtape for and put the two together.
"It was sort of waiting my whole life, incubating, and I finally got to make them together... I'm really excited to bring that music to people."
The soundtrack also features Dolly Parton's Jolene, the Ramones' Sheena is a Punk Rocker and songs by Peaches and Jens Lekman.
Barrymore also commissioned new tracks by singer/songwriter Landon Pigg, who also appears in the film, Har Mar Superstar and Squeak E. Clean & Desert Eagles.
She adds, "Most of the people who are on this soundtrack are friends, people we took the time to go to personally and ask them if they would associate themselves with the movie, or people that we discovered that we can't wait to get to know. It's really interesting to have such personal relationships with everyone."...

Nirvana to Miley Cyrus. Green Day to Howlin' Wolf. Jimi Hendrix to Jimmy Eat World. Obscure sample-happy Queens one-man band Kid America and the Action Figures to, of course, current tourmates Blink-182.
