An easy way to describe “The Bisexual” is “What if ‘Chasing Amy’ was not directed by Kevin Smith, but a bisexual woman?” — and it’s a description that creator Desiree Akhavan appreciates. “I’ll take it,” she said to IndieWire in a recent interview. “I 100 percent agree with that synopsis.”
Akhavan, who also directed this year’s Sundance favorite “The Miseducation of Cameron Post,” didn’t have anything against “Chasing Amy.” But, she felt, “what if it was written from the perspective of Amy? Which is what I care about more. That’s why I like that film — I was like, ‘Oh, that’s a story I can relate to.’ That’s comedy, that’s something really intriguing to me. But, I didn’t want to know it from Ben Affleck’s point of view.”

Desiree Akhavan can be seen as Leila, a New Yorker in London trying to get to grips with her sexuality and life in the English capital, in a new extended trailer for “The Bisexual.” Akhavan directed and stars in the comedy, which bows on Channel 4 in the U.K. on Wednesday and will launch on Hulu in the U.S. later this year.
The “Appropriate Behaviour” and “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” indie filmmaker also co-wrote the series, with longtime collaborator Cecilia Frugiuele.
Channel 4 has been airing a short trailer, but in the full promo Leila can be seen struggling with her newfound bisexuality. “It’s tacky, it’s gauche, it makes you seem disingenuous, like your genitals have no allegiance,” she tells Gabe (Brian Gleeson), her new flatmate and wingman.

Chloë Grace Moretz stars in Desiree Akhavan’s bittersweet drama tracking the doubts and defiance of a teenager sent to a gay conversion facility in 90s Montana
The Iranian-American film-maker Desiree Akhavan, creator of the admirably spiky 2014 romcom Appropriate Behaviour, cites John Hughes, Lynne Ramsay and Todd Haynes as key influences on her latest film – a neat summation of the warring elements behind this engagingly subversive coming-of-age tale. Adapted from Emily M Danforth’s 2012 novel by Akhavan and co-writer/producer Cecilia Frugiuele, it documents the abusive “gay conversion” therapies inflicted upon teenagers by zealous Christians. Yet while the subject matter may be dark (self-hatred and self-harm are confronted head-on), Akhavan plays it with poignant wit, zest and a lusty sense of defiance, combining the bonding charms of a brat-pack crowd-pleaser with the psychological terrors of a prom-night horror flick.

Desiree Akhavan didn’t set out to make a message movie with “The Miseducation of Cameron Post.” Her second feature stars Chloe Grace Moretz as the eponymous teenage Cameron, who is shunted off to gay conversion camp after she’s caught in flagrante with her best friend. For the filmmaker behind the disarmingly honest “Appropriate Behavior,” the film offered the chance to put a different spin on the stories she likes to tell.

Back at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival, one of the most buzzed about titles, in addition to being a prize winner, was The Miseducation of Cameron Post. This movie seemed poised to be a potential breakout. Then, it was more or less radio silence for the flick. It played at the Tribeca Film Festival, but it wasn’t turning into the quintessential Sundance success story. Well, the time to make it happen is now. This week, the film hits theaters, hoping to attract a diverse audience. It does happen to be a terrific little independent title. So, it’s worth praise and worth seeking out. The film is a coming of age period piece, set in the 1990’s. Here is the plot synopsis: “In 1993 after teenage Cameron is caught in the backseat of a car with the prom queen, she is sent away to a treatment center in a remote area called God’s Promise.

What a shame that this well-meaning look at the absurdity of gay conversion camps — it won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year — lacks the teeth to make its points stick. Based on a 2012 Ya novel by Emily M. When “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” took home the Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance Film Festival this year, Desiree Akhavan was not on hand to accept the prize for her sophomore feature. The director had taped a thank you speech to be played at the festival’s awards Saturday night, but it was not broadcast due to technical difficulties. The reason for her absence was bittersweet; Akhavan was due back in London to resume work on another project, a television series for Channel 4 and Hulu with themes similar to her first feature, “Appropriate Behavior.”
For the series, which bears the working title “The Bisexual,” Akhavan re-teamed with her “Cameron Post” co-writer, Cecilia Frugiuele. The two women accepted the Grand Jury Prize together from the comfort of a couch in London.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post is easily the best film about a teenage lesbian compelled to go to a Christian conversion camp since the underrated But I'm a Cheerleader (1999). Okay, that's admittedly a very small field of competition. However, it doesn't change the fact that this sophomore feature by Desiree Akhavan (Appropriate Behavior) is a delight, more somber in tone than Cheerleader but still generously peppered with biting humor and warmed by a generous spirit that extends understanding, if not forgiveness, even to the religious zealot characters.

The Miseducation of Cameron Post
Desiree Akhavan could distinctly hold two parallel careers — one in front of the camera, but we selfishly want her writing and directing – we said that her debut film “will catch several off guard for its strong comedic timing and gloriously beat-up protag.” Written once again by Appropriate Behavior team of Akhavan and Cecilia Frugiuele, The Miseducation of Cameron Post has had time to simmer, to be more polished as filming took place in November of 2016.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
For the vast majority of female filmmakers, the second-film slump is real. Getting that first movie made might sound like the biggest challenge for any fledgling filmmaker, but for so many women in the industry, turning first film buzz into new opportunities is an uphill battle that few can win. For “Appropriate Behavior” filmmaker and star Desiree Akhavan, the realization that her status as a festival darling wasn’t going to automatically translate into a huge Hollywood career came hard. Good thing she didn’t really want that anyway.
“Because I had only made one feature and I was a woman, I didn’t have the best opportunities,” Akhavan told IndieWire. “It’s crazy when I think of men who premiere a first film at Sundance and then get offered franchises. That was not happening to me,...

Twenty-two emerging producers to receive up to £2.2m; almost 500 applicants.Scroll Down For Recipients
The BFI has announced the recipients of its 2016-18 Vision Awards, comprising 22 investments in up-and-coming UK producers.
The awards, generally spread over two years, are designed to enable producers to build and develop their companies, slates and creative relationships.
The BFI had intended to give 20 awards but increased that allocation to 22 in response to the number of strong applications it received. Almost 500 companies applied for the awards, which are backed by a total commitment from the BFI of £2.2m of National Lottery funding.
Fifteen of the awards are to women producers or partnerships, while eight of the companies are based outside of London, located in Belfast, Cardiff, Glasgow, Hull, Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield and York.

Film London, global film streaming platform We Are Colony and Edge Hill University have announced the latest phase of an innovative research project which explores ways to capitalize on digital film releases, empower filmmakers and satisfy audiences’ appetite for exclusive content. Don't you wish you were British so you could partake in this project with your film?
Made possible by the Digital R&D fund for the Arts, the project examines the rapidly-evolving world of video on demand, and how the We Are Colony platform can engage fans who are keen to unlock exciting additional content such as deleted scenes, interviews, scripts and trailers. The seven titles selected for the year-long research project are the critically-acclaimed "Appropriate Behavior," Benedict Cumberbatch road movie "Third Star," feted Alternative Miss World documentary "The British Guide To Showing Off," Agyness Deyn’s breakout performance in "Electricity," uncompromising British drama "We Are Monster," high-concept thriller "Containment," and award-winning short film "Some Candid Observations on the Eve of the End of the World."
Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission , said: “Film London exists to help connect ideas, finance and talent at every stage of the filmmaking process, so a project which helps our industry capitalize on new technologies while exploring innovative ways to engage audiences is a perfect fit for us. By bringing together industry nous, entrepreneurial instincts and academic excellence this partnership is proving to be extremely exciting, and I’m looking forward to see how it develops and benefits the seven films we have selected.”
Sarah Tierney, founder of We Are Colony, comments: “We are pleased to be working with a group of forward-thinking and innovative producers, distributors and sales agents, keen to interrogate the potential of new digital models to engage an audience early and through additional content. In addition, with content being delivered to registered account holders in over 100 countries, We Are Colony is looking forward to sharing data from the beta launch, and the results of a significant user survey looking at viewing behaviors and attitudes to content.”
Working with a range of budgets and varying international appeal, the slate aims to reflect the reality of independent production in the UK. As Leeshon Alexander, writer, producer and star of "We Are Monster," comments: “'We Are Monster' is a truly independent film. As such, we feel it’s not only important to be a part of such a study, but a fantastic opportunity to work closely with a progressive screen agency such as Film London and a sector innovator such as We Are Colony.”
Cecilia Frugiuele of Parkville Pictures, producer of "Appropriate Behavior" and short film "Some Candid Observations on the Eve of the End of the World" also comments: “The international reach of the platform is also a way for producers and Sales Agents to be in control of their film’s destiny offering new ways to exploit a title without a traditional distributor.”
Core to We Are Colony’s unique place in the VOD market is the release of ‘special edition bundles,' releasing quality films with a range of (often exclusive) additional and behind-the-scenes content. Franki Goodwin of Western Edge Pictures, who produced "Third Star," adds: “For us, the opportunity to partner with We Are Colony to bring additional content to our fans, and in turn to support a fantastic new VOD platform, was a no-brainer. This is a huge opportunity for film makers to offer their audiences more than just a movie.”
In addition, the platform works hands-on with licensors in a marketing role, delivering content and creative, plus organic and paid marketing. Cecilia Frugiuele states: “We Are Colony is an empowering tool for filmmakers. It encourages them to think of audience engagement earlier in production, helping them shape their future distribution strategy.”
Lastly, as part of the research phase, the We Are Colony platform will be trialing new windows, including an innovative pre-sale model where users pay early in exchange for instant fulfillment on extra content, ahead of general release. One title currently in pre-sales in the UK is Containment, and producer Christine Hartland states: “We’re thrilled to be partnering with We Are Colony for the release of 'Containment.' We will be able to offer audiences a deeper experience of the film and a chance to engage in its world in innovative ways. As independent filmmakers we’re very aware of the crowded marketplace for indie British thrillers, and are excited about the possibilities of offering our audience more than just a conventional cinema experience. By connecting with audiences early and building their investment in the film, we intend to build a fanbase even ahead of release”.
The report, lead by Prof. Philip Drake of Edge Hill University and researcher Michael Franklin, co-authored by the project partners, is due to release in Q4 2015.
About the seven films selected for the project:
"Appropriate Behavior," the sexually-frank romantic comedy written, directed and starring Desiree Akhavan ("Girls"), produced by Cecilia Frugiuele, nominated in the Independent Spirit Awards 2014. The film was licensed from Peccadillo Pictures (UK), Gravitas Ventures (North America) and Transmission Films (Australia and New Zealand).
"The British Guide To Showing Off," the critically-acclaimed documentary which pays homage to the eccentric universe of the Alternative Miss World Show, directed by Jes Benstock and produced by Dorigen Hammond.
"Third Star," the critically-acclaimed British road movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch ("The Imitation Game," "Sherlock"), Tom Burke ( The Musketeers"), Jj Feild ("Captain America"), Adam Robertson and Hugh Bonneville ("Downton Abbey"), re-released internationally through the We Are Colony platform. The film was licensed from Independent Film Sales.
"Electricity," the startling 'Alice in Wonderland' tale with a breakout performance by Agyness Deyn, directed by Bryn Higgins and produced by Clare Duggan. Licensed from Soda Pictures (UK).
"We Are Monster," the critically-acclaimed, uncompromising British drama written, produced and starring Leeshon Alexander, directed by Antony Petrou, with producers including Noel Clarke ("Adulthood, Kidulthood"). The film was licensed from Metrodome Distribution (UK).
"Containment," the high-concept British thriller with an ensemble cast including Lee Ross ("The English Patient," "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes") and Louise Brealey ("Sherlock"), directed by Neil Mcenery-West and produced by Christine Hartland, Casey Herbert and Pete Smyth. The film was licensed by Vision Films (international sales).
And "Some Candid Observations on the Eve of the End of the World," the award-winning short film starring Theo Barklem-Biggs ("KIngsman: The Secret Service," "The Inbetweeners Movie") and Adrian Scarborough ("The King’s Speech," "Les Misérables").

One can consider every square inch of Brooklyn and Manhattan cinematically mapped, but it will always be a unique perspective in films like Desiree Akhavan’s feature debut “Appropriate Behavior” that warrant another look. Centered around Shirin, an Iranian-American Brooklynite transitioning in and out of a major relationship with girlfriend Maxine, the film succeeds via Akhavan’s merging of several thematic strands —it's a coming out, culture clash and break-up dramedy all in one, told with a subtle touch. We called it “a supremely satisfying and irreverent take on the New York rom-com” in our review, which will be familiar to anyone who’s seen Akhavan’s webseries “The Slope,” about two “superficial, homophobic lesbians,” produced with co-star Ingrid Jungermann while attending Nyu’s graduate film program. “Appropriate Behavior” similarly started out in school as Akhavan’s thesis film, but its creative team met when she studied abroad in London and met Cecilia Frugiuele,...
