Adelaide, Nov 4 (Ians) Ireland left-arm pacer Josh Little’s hat-trick went in vain as New Zealand took a big step towards qualifying for the semifinals of Men’s T20 World Cup with a 35-run win in their last Group 1 match in Super 12s at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.
New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson played exquisite shots all across the park to make a solid 61, his first fifty of the tournament, to help his side reach a challenging 185/6. But Little stole thunder of it by dismissing him, Jimmy Neesham and Mitchell Santner on the trot in the 19th over to record second hat-trick of the tournament.
Chasing 186, Ireland needed a big start and their openers, captain Andrew Balbirnie and Paul Stirling, responded well to the call with some amazing boundaries. At 68 for no loss after eight overs, Ireland looked set to cause an upset.

Abu Dhabi, Oct 28 (Ians) Coached by the former English cricketer Carl Crowe, the New York Strikers’ squad in the Abu Dhabi T10 League has players such as Kieron Pollard and England’s Odi winning World Cup captain Eoin Morgan.
The team will be mentored by the Indian legend Yuvraj Singh, and are banking on their batting depth at the Abu Dhabi T10 this year.
Speaking ahead of the season, coach Carl Crowe said, “One of our goals during the draft was to pick a squad with huge depth batting wise so you can look at some of the names we bat all the way down the order to 8, 9, 10. Whichever combination we select, so we are happy with the depth rather than necessarily picking out one player.”

Kingston (Jamaica), Oct 22 (Ians) Cricket West Indies president Ricky Skerritt has expressed deep disappointment over the West Indies men’s team’s stunning defeat to Ireland that resulted in their exit from the Icc T20 World Cup in Australia.
In the match played at Hobart, leg-spinner Gareth Delany picked up career-best figures of 3/16 while veteran opener Paul Stirling slammed a sensational 66 not out to take Ireland to the Super 12 stage with a nine-wicket drubbing of West Indies in a decisive Group B match of the first round at Bellerive Oval on Friday.
After Delany kept things tight, with other bowlers chipping in, to keep the West Indies to an under-par 146/5 in 20 overs, with Brandon King making an unbeaten 62, Stirling came out all guns blazing in his unbeaten 48-ball knock, hitting six fours and two sixes, hunting down the total with 15 balls remaining.

When Ireland were just 14 runs away from securing their Super 12 spot and brushing aside the West Indies, the DJ at the Bellerive Oval was playing U2’s blockbuster song ‘Beautiful Day’ in the backdrop of their highly vocal supporters cheering loudly for Andrew Balbirnie & Co to wrap the match quickly.
Ireland would eventually hunt down 147 with 15 balls remaining, with Lorcan Tucker finishing off the chase in style, skipping down the pitch and converting a half-volley from left-arm fast bowler Obed McCoy into a loft over cover for four to give his side the ticket to Super 12.
What really stood out from Ireland’s drubbing of the West Indies, who were a pale shadow of their two-time championship winning self, was the manner in which the nine-wicket win was executed. On the pitch not offering much pace, Ireland executed their plans of getting West Indies batters caught at longer boundaries and...

Hobart, Oct 14 (Ians) Ireland opener Paul Stirling has lauded the team management led by head coach Heinrich Malan for encouraging the players to take positive options of playing the game and in turn, inject confidence within them ahead of their opening match in the men’s T20 World Cup on Monday.
After being unable to qualify for Super 12 stage in last year’s T20 World Cup in the UAE, Ireland will be eyeing to qualify from the first round in a tough Group B alongside two-time champions West Indies, Scotland and Zimbabwe.
Ireland have played lots of matches at home against India, New Zealand, South Africa and Afghanistan, with a refreshing approach since Malan took over as head coach of the side earlier this year though they didn’t get much results their way.
“Clarity of role is something important that Heinrich (Malan) has focused on, and to have a...

Dublin (Ireland), Sep 20 (Ians) Off-spinner Simi Singh was on Tuesday selected ahead of Andy McBrine as the third spinner in the Ireland squad for the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia starting next month.
With George Dockrell and Gareth Delany doing well this season, the selectors decided to pick one spinner in the 15-member squad and Simi Singh got the nod.
“One of the most considered decisions we had to make was around our spin bowling options. With George Dockrell and Gareth Delany both having an impact this summer and the variation they bring to the attack, it came down to making a choice between Simi Singh and Andy McBrine.
“Andy can feel very unfortunate to have missed out this time, but we believe Simi offers more variation on Australian wickets with his ability to take the ball away from both right and left-handers,” Cricket Ireland’s chief selector Andrew White said.

Belfast, Aug 18 (Ians) Ireland sealed the five-match T20I series against Afghanistan with a thrilling, rain-affected seven-wicket win in the decider match at Stormont.
After winning the toss and electing to bowl first, Ireland had an excellent start, thanks to an opening burst from Player of the Match, pacer Mark Adair.
After a quiet first over from Josh Little, Hazratullah Zazai looked to have got Afghanistan moving with two consecutive boundaries, the first streakily skewed past point, and the second smoked through the covers.
However, Adair struck back, enticing the explosive opener to miscue high into the air, with Simi Singh taking the catch at mid-off. Three balls later, he claimed another, Rahmanullah Gurbaz poking outside off and edging through to the keeper.
Little snuck through a second quiet over before Adair struck again, once more hitting back after a first-ball boundary. This time he was cut through point by...

The Ireland opener remains the only player from his country to make over 2000 T20I runs with the recently retired Kevin O’Brien coming in at second place with 1973 runs.
Suzie Bates, Meg Lanning and Stafanie Taylor have achieved the feat in women’s T20Is. This makes Stirling the seventh player in T20Is to cross the 3000-run barrier.

Belfast (Ireland), Aug 13 (Ians) Ireland’s middle-order batter George Dockrell struck his maiden T20I half-century but the hosts still ended up losing the third game by 22 runs as Afghanistan clawed back after two successive defeats to finally taste success in the five-match series on Saturday (Ist).
The touring side’s top four batters delivered to put up a strong total of 189/5, and Ireland were quickly reduced to 36/4 in their run chase.
The hosts looked down and out at 85/7 in the 13th over, but Dockrell (58 not out off 37 balls) and debutant Fionn Hand (36 off 18) kept Ireland’s hopes alive with an eighth-wicket partnership worth 74 — just six runs short of a world-record eighth wicket stand in T20I cricket, according to Cricket Ireland. In the end, though, Afghanistan held on to celebrate their first win of the series to make it 1-2 after three games.

Belfast, Aug 12 (Ians) An impressive bowling performance from Ireland set up their five-wicket win over Afghanistan to take a 2-0 lead in the five-match T20I series. The hosts limited the visitors to 122/8 in 20 overs, with four bowlers taking two wickets each and ensured Afghanistan’s batting never gathered any serious momentum.
In reply, Ireland briefly tumbled in the middle overs of their chase, falling from 72/1 to 86/4. But George Dockrell held his nerve with an unbeaten 19-ball 25 to secure victory. After Afghanistan chose to bat first, Mark Adair took a wicket on the first ball of second over as Rahmanullah Gurbaz found the hands of Barry McCarthy to depart for 1.
Josh Little then bowled Usman Ghani in the next over to leave Afghanistan at 20/2. Ibrahim Zadran hit three boundaries off McCarthy’s first over. But Curtis Campher struck from the final ball of the sixth over as Zadran’s flick...
