The conversation has been ongoing for years, but only within the last few months have several awards bodies finally stepped up to make their acting categories gender neutral, abolishing decades of binary male-female views of acting and opening a door to performers who identify as nonbinary or trans and have felt invisible across the industry.
In August, the Film Independent Spirit Awards became one the most high-profile awards groups to join the trend, ditching separate Best Actor and Best Actress categories and combining them into one field populated with 10 actors. The move follows similar steps by the Gotham Awards in 2021 and the Canadian Screen Awards also in August. The TCA Awards kicked off the movement back as 1996, followed by the Grammys in 2012 (which eliminated gendered categories for performers), followed in recent years by the MTV Movie and TV Awards and the Berlin Film Festival.

When Telemundo comes to her mind, the first thing Bianca Quesada thinks about is her grandma’s television set and seeing telenovelas with the same soapy narratives that have been told by the genre for ages. Fast-forward to today, and the “Vida” development alum will be producing unscripted and scripted content for Telemundo that will expand the aperture of the medium, redefining what a telenovela can be.
“We both fundamentally believe that the Latinx experience is not monolithic and that it is not a one-size-fits-all narrative. We want to bridge the nuance and reliability of characters and move from just a Latin or a Hispanic experience to a universal human experience,” Quesada tells Variety. “Hollywood has been a perpetrator of regurgitation of negative stereotypes about our people, and to a degree, there weren’t enough of us to hold the people in storytelling accountable for the types of depictions,” she added.

The Emmy Awards will now allow the winners in any category titled “Actress” or “Actor” to request to be recognized as “Performers,” the Television Academy announced Monday.
Nominees may request that their nomination certificate and Emmy statuette carry the term “Performer” in place of Actor or Actress. The Television Academy has approved this rule change for the current 2021 Emmy award season.
In addition, the Academy said that any documentary film that screens on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences website will be considered “a theatrical motion picture and thus ineligible for the Emmy competition.”
The announcement follows a fight from gender-inclusive advocates, such as Asia Kate Dillon and Ser Anzoategui, who have long advocated for the abolition of gender-specific awards categories and in some cases, the addition of a non-binary category.

The Television Academy’s Board of Governors on Monday said it has approved a pair of rules changes for the Emmy Awards.
One change will allow anyone nominated in an actor or actress category the option to “request that their nomination certificate and Emmy statuette carry the term ‘Performer’ in place of Actor or Actress,” the Academy said.
“No performer category titled ‘Actor’ or ‘Actress’ has ever had a gender requirement for submissions,” it wrote today. “Now, nominees and (or) winners in any performer category titled ‘Actor’ or ‘Actress’ may request that their nomination certificate and Emmy statuette carry the term ‘Performer’ in place of Actor or Actress.”
The option will take effect beginning with the current 2021 Emmy Awards season, and comes at a time when voices in the industry are increasingly calling for non-binary awards categories (including recently in a guest column on Deadline by Vida‘s Ser Anzoategui.

Editor’s Note: A regular on the barrier-breaking Vida over the three-season run of the Starz series, Ser Anzoategui has long identified as non-binary. With the Golden Globes tonight, Anzoategu, whose credits also include East Los High and Better Things, has penned a guest column for Deadline about what they see as a need for a significant shift in the way performers are categorized in awards season.
It’s time for the non-binary award category.
Being eligible for award season has been a highlight of my career. However, when I was respectfully asked which category, I’d prefer to submit myself in for the Golden Globe awards and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, it became a challenging experience.
Now you might ask what makes submitting for such a prestigious acting award so stressful?
Well, it’s because performance award categories are marked by gender and there is no category that truly reflects my gender.

“Vida” may be over, but star Mishel Prada has some ideas for a spin-off.
“You know, who I would love to see as a spin-off is Rocky and Eddy,” Prada said in a recent conversation with TheWrap following the conclusion of the Latinx drama series’ third and final season.
“Their relationship to me is so amazing, and they’re very much of the neighborhood,” she continued. “They represent the neighborhood. So seeing something like that, where Eddy goes past it, would be really wonderful to get to explore.”
The character of Eddy, played by Ser Anzoategui, is the former wife of Emma (Prada) and Lyn’s (Melissa Barrera) late mother, Vidalia, after whom their bar “Vida” is named. Rocky, Eddy’s friend, is played by Adelina Anthony.

Exclusive: Netflix has acquired the worldwide rights to the Sam Feder-directed documentary Disclosure. The feature-length docu is set to debut on the streaming platform on June 19 — a perfect release date considering June is Pride Month.
Disclosure made its premiere at Sundance earlier this year and puts a spotlight on transgender representation in TV and film while showing how it has impacted how Americans feel about members of the trans community and how it has taught trans people to feel about themselves.
Feder not only puts members of the trans community front and center but he also made sure that they were represented behind the camera as well. This way, it was a film about trans people made by trans people, marking a genuine effort of authenticity.

Throughout its short-lived three seasons, the half-hour comedic melodrama “Vida” has covered a lot of ground. Opening with a mother’s death bringing together two sisters when they inherit a bar in their gentrifying East L.A. neighborhood, the series charted Mexican-American identity, immigration, gentrification, queerness, and female sexuality, and concludes with the creation of the hottest Poc queer bar in Boyle Heights.
From its humble beginnings as a six-episode lark for Starz, the mere existence of “Vida” was a fairy tale come true. The show is the brain-and-love-child of Tanya Saracho, a queer Chicana playwright from Chicago who has worked extensively with the city’s famed Steppenwolf Theater Company. When “Vida” premiered in 2018, there were very few TV shows headed by a woman showrunner, and even fewer by a woman of color. The joy and enthusiasm evoked by such a milestone carried through the terrific first two seasons, which charmed with sharp storytelling,...

“Vida” is coming to an end with its upcoming third season, Starz announced Wednesday.
The cabler renewed the show for the third season in May 2019 and its April 26 premiere date was announced just last month, in February 2020. But now “final season” has been added as a descriptor.
Creator, showrunner and director Tanya Saracho wrote a letter to say goodbye:
“I have not been able to write this letter — every time I try my palms get sweaty, my heart does a cumbia beat and I get nauseous. It’s taken me days. Because no matter how you slice it, this is a farewell letter. So I’ll get that part out of the way: Season Three will be ‘Vida’s’ final season. Rather than dwell on the ‘hows’ and the ‘whys,’ what I’m burning to get to is the ‘thank-you’ part. That’s the part that’s making my chest ache.

Starz said Tuesday that Season 3 of its original series Vida will premiere on April 26 at 9 Pm. Six episodes of the East L.A.-set drama will air week-to-week on Starz in the U.S. and Canada and on StarzPlay across Europe and Latin America.
The show created by Tanya Saracho had been renewed for a third season less than a week after its Season 2 premiere in May 2019; the show has continued to boost Hispanic viewership numbers at the Lionsgate-owned network. The new season wrapped filming in Los Angeles in November, and was written by an all-Latinx writers room and helmed by Latina directors Jenée Lamarque and Saracho.

Greater diversity in television is a storytelling good as much as a political one. The medium has made some long-overdue strides in the last few years with inclusive casting and shows that offer fresh perspectives to an ever-wider audience. But while some of these series have been great from the start, like FX’s Pose, others have needed more fine-tuning.

Starz‘s half-hour series “Vida” aired its critically acclaimed second season in May and has already been renewed for a third. And thank goodness because that means we will get to see even more of Ser Anzoategui‘s performance as Eddy, whose character arc was season two’s most compelling. While Emma (Mishel Prada) and Lyn (Melissa Barrera) are the series’s protagonists, Anzoategui’s Eddy is its emotional core and a nomination for this performance would be historic.
In 2017, following an impassioned letter from Asia Kate Dillon (“Billions“), the academy determined that non-binary actors could choose to place themselves in whichever gender category they wish. Anzoategui has chosen to compete in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor race, and if nominated they would be the first non-binary performer to score an acting nomination. The same would be true of Dillon, who is an Emmy hopeful for Best Drama Supporting Actor.

Last year, the Vida TV show was one of two half-hour dramas to premiere on Starz. Despite being the second lowest-rated TV series on the premium cable network, it wasn't cancelled and is now back for a second season, which was released in full on the Starz app, three days prior to the season two debut. Since it was inspired by the Richard Villegas Jr. short story, Pour Vida, is there still more story left to tell? Will Vida be cancelled or renewed for season three? Stay tuned. *Status update below.

Starz just gave Vida fans a reason to celebrate this weekend: The half-hour drama has been renewed for a third season, less than a week after its Season 2 premiere.

In the right hands, the day-to-day operations of running a bar can be sturdy building blocks for absorbing television. “Cheers” is the most successful, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” is right on its heels, and now “Vida” has proven worthy to carry the torch for the foreseeable future. In a longer, richer, and just-as-engrossing second season, Tanya Saracho’s Latinx Starz comedy doubles down on its Season 1 premise, in that sisters Lyn (Melissa Barrera) and Emma (Mishel Prada) commit to rebuilding the bar inherited from their mother.
Yet what makes “Vida” come together so smoothly is Saracho’s understanding of what a bar represents — it’s a respite from life and the origin of it. People go there to get away, and Lyn and Emma have plenty of good times at their Los Angeles cantina. But they also are using it to start anew. Yes, there are new bartenders to deal with,...

Starz is bringing back “Vida,” and like the characters of the show, it has a slightly different plan to go along with the show’s return.
The series, which premiered last summer to wide acclaim, follows two sisters navigating the various challenges of maintaining their family relationships while dealing with everything else their Los Angeles neighborhood has to offer.
Starz’s official pre-Season 2 summary explains that in the upcoming episodes, “Lyn (Melissa Barrera) and Emma (Mishel Prada) begin the monumental task of rebuilding their mother’s business while navigating financial constraints, competing developers and the growing anti-gentrification movement. Lyn and Emma must contemplate the relationships in their lives, including their own, and they are forced to dig deep to unearth what their mother’s legacy means to them.”

The drama continues, as Starz has released the first trailer for Season 2 of Mexican-American drama Vida, set in the heavily Latinx east side area of Los Angeles.
Created by Tanya Saracho, the show premiered on May 6 last year and drew critical praise for its realistic scenarios and portrayals of gentrification, class and cultural struggles, many mirroring the real-life situations in east La, which has seen several protests against art studios and businesses perceived as gentrifying a traditionally Latinx neighborhood.

As the country readies for next week’s midterm elections, a slew of new star-powered political ads are hitting screens. The latest: a Mike Bloomberg and RadicalMedia-produced ad directed by Jodie Foster that comes with some simple message about the power of voting on November 6.
“It is hard to overstate the importance of this election. Our environment and our health are on the line,” said Bloomberg in an official statement. “The good news is that more women are running than ever before, and female voters overwhelmingly support Democratic candidates for the House and Senate. The polls suggest a gender gap in voting larger than anytime since the 1950s. But this election will be decided by turnout and getting people to cast their ballots. I want to thank Jodie Foster and every woman who participated in this effort for making their voices heard and encouraging others to do the same.

In the wake of gut-wrenching reports from the southern border, where families are being detained and separated, the casts and crew of Starz’s “Vida” and Netflix’s “One Day at a Time” pledged funds to immigration advocacy group Raices and challenged others to do the same for their #OneVidaataTime fundraising effort. More than a dozen shows have since followed suit, but it’s notable (and not altogether surprising) that it took shows “Vida” and “One Day at a Time” to kick off this urgent call to action within the entertainment industry in the first place. They, unlike the vast majority of television out there, have been doing the crucial work of humanizing Latinx stories all along. They, like their fundraising hashtag, have been showing how the political is so often personal, one life at a time.

“Vida” is continuing life on Starz with Season 2, the network announced Tuesday.
“‘Vida’ has delivered on its promise of attracting a young, new Latinx audience to the Starz platform, as we had hoped it would, and we are pleased to be able to announce a second season of the series,” said Starz CEO Chris Albrecht in a statement.
“With these new episodes, Tanya and her team now have the opportunity to take audiences even deeper into the lives and community of the Hernandez sisters, and we look forward to bringing the next chapter of their story to life,” he continued.

Despite the proliferation of news stories about bathroom bills and pushes to use gender-inclusive pronouns in classrooms and workplaces, stories about gender expression and identity are still ones that Hollywood can struggle to get right.
It was only last year that Showtime’s “Billions” cast non-binary actor Asia Kate Dillon to play the first non-binary role on an American series, and the transgender community has had a mixed reaction to cis-gender male actor Jeffrey Tambor’s award-winning turn as a transitioning woman on Amazon’s “Transparent” the past four seasons. This season saw “Looking” alum Tanya Saracho’s new Starz family drama, “Vida.” Among its many queer-positive stances is the casting of non-binary talent Ser Anzoategui as Eddy, a woman mourning the loss of her wife while also struggling to have a relationship with her detached stepdaughters. While Anzoategui uses they/them pronouns, their character (at least in season one) is a cis-gender woman.

“Any storyteller or creator is waiting to tell their story from their point of view,” says “Vida” creator Tanya Saracho. When this playwright-turned-scriptwriter was pitched the idea for the new Starz drama she didn’t know they wanted her to be the showrunner. “They gave me a shot,” she explains, so she put the story “through my filter, which is queer, and Latinx, and female.” The series centers on two sisters — Emma (Mishel Prada) and Lyn (Melissa Barrera) — who return to their East Los Angeles neighborhood following the death of their mother. While there they are confronted with shocking truths about their mother’s true identity when they meet her partner, Eddy (Ser Anzoategui). Watch our exclusive video interview with Saracho above.

Starz’s new Latinx drama Vida has been getting tons of buzz since its release. So much so that the cabler has decided to make the premiere episode available to everyone.
Starz announced today that the first episode will be available on Starz.com, the Starz YouTube channel, the Vida Facebook page as well as the popular Latinx website Remezcla.com. The episode will start streaming at 12 Am Et on May 10 in honor of Dia de las Madres so that the world will be able to watch what everyone has been raving about.
Created by Tanya Saracho, Vida focuses on two very different sisters, Emma and Lyn who to return to their old neighborhood, where they are confronted by the past and shocking truth about their mother’s identity. The series, which won the Audience Award at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival, tells a queer narrative and puts East L.

How is Emma and Lyn's reconciliation during the first season of the Vida TV show on Starz? As we all know, the Nielsen ratings typically play a big role in determining whether the TV show Vida is cancelled or renewed for season two. Unfortunately, most of us do not live in Nielsen households. Because many viewers feel frustration when their viewing habits and opinions aren't considered, we'd like to offer you the chance to rate all of the Vida season one episodes below. A Starz drama based on the short story, Pour Vida, by Richard Villegas, Jr., Vida stars Mishel Prada, Melissa Barrera, Ser Anzoategui, Carlos Miranda, Chelsea Rendon, and Maria-Elena Laas. The TV series centers on two estranged Mexican-American sisters who are reunited by tragedy. Despite growing up together on the Eastside of Los Angeles, Emma (Prada) and Lyn (Barrera) could...

“Find your way back home” is the tagline for Vida, but this new Starz drama is in many ways a road map into the real American mosaic of 2018 in all its messy, hurtful, complex and heartfelt glory. With gender, culture, economics, family, sexuality, conflict and unconventional wisdom at its often raw core, the May 6-debuting Latinx series from Tanya Saracho has the added value of being really good television.
Clearly influenced by the original The L Word and that other Showtime series Shameless, and a blatant lunge towards the massive audience of America’s largest minority, the six-episode Vida kicks off with estranged sisters Emma (Misha Prada) and Lyn (Melissa Barrera) returning to their old La neighborhood of Boyle Heights to bury their mother. Having created distinctly different lives for themselves in Chicago and San Francisco, respectively, the siblings aim to hit the SoCal ground, put their mother Vidalia in the ground,...

The rare drama series to focus on Latino characters — who are female and/or queer, no less — “Vida” only somewhat lives up to the color, richness and excitement maybe promised by its title (the Spanish feminine noun for “life”). Starz certainly deserves a big gracias for disrupting Hollywood’s #SoWhiteMale status with this scrappy half-hour, which showrunner Tanya Saracho has said reflects her mission to introduce “the brown queer perspective” to TV. Sporting vibrant East La La Land locations and piquant touches of magical realism, the first six episodes ultimately unfold like an arthouse-y pastiche of Showtime hits “The L Word” and “Shameless” and Netflix’s Cuban-spiced reboot of “One Day at a Time.” Meaning it’s got to find its own way if it’s going to stick around.
