"I'm a private person." "Are you now?" Utopia has unveiled a second trailer for the edgy new film Femme, which first premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival (here's my review) last year. One year later - they're giving this another push before it hits US theaters. It's a remarkably powerful look at the dynamic between a gay man & closeted "tough guy" in London. Jules' life as a drag queen is destroyed by a homophobic attack. But when he re-encounters his attacker, the deeply-closeted Preston in a sauna, he is now presented with a chance to exact revenge. Unrecognizable out of his wig and make-up, Jules infiltrates Preston’s life, and in doing so, discovers power in a different kind of drag. A provocative contemporary thriller. Starring George MacKay as Preston & Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as Jules, with a cast including Aaron Heffernan, John McCrea, Nima Taleghani, Antonia Clarke, and Moe Bar-El. I...

How would you handle coming face to face with your attacker? Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping’s “Femme” takes that very question — and the revenge story that follows — to a new level, as it follows a lauded drag artist (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) who crosses paths with his homophobic assaulter (George MacKay) in a gay bathhouse months after his terrible attack. What transpires is an unexpected tale of forgiveness, empathy, and yes, even violence.
The official synopsis for the film reads: “With his performances as Aphrodite Banks, Jules (Nathan Stewart-Jarrett) has a place among London’s celebrated drag artists. One night after a show, he steps out to get some cigarettes and is brutally attacked by a man (George MacKay) out with a gang of his friends. Although Jules is able to recover physically, he withdraws from the outside world, traumatized. Months later, he recognizes his attacker by chance in a gay sauna.

A performer is subjected to a brutal homophobic assault and finds himself in a disturbingly intimate situation with his attacker
Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and George MacKay bring alpha performances to this psychodrama of sexual danger from first-time feature directors Sam H Freeman and Ng Choon Ping, developed from an earlier award-winning short film. Jules, played by Stewart-Jarrett, is a drag artist with an enthusiastic club following and supportive flatmates: protective, plain-speaking Alicia (Asha Reid) and Toby (John McCrea), who has alcohol issues and is not-so-secretly messed up by his unrequited feelings for Jules.
Preparing for a show one night, Jules notices a guy outside the venue, checking him out: this is the sulky, straight-acting Preston (MacKay), who scowls at Jules’s seductive smile and stalks off. Later, when Jules pops into a late-night pharmacy, rashly still in costume and makeup, Preston shows up with a gang of mates and subjects him to a brutal homophobic attack.

The Olivier Award-winning West End revival of Cabaret is coming to Broadway: Producers announced that the acclaimed musical will begin previews at the August Wilson Theater in spring 2024.
Not confirmed: Whether the West End production’s original 2021 stars Eddie Redmayne (as the Emcee) or Jessie Buckley (as Sally Bowles) will make the move. Redmayne’s participation, in particular, has been widely speculated, prompted in part by his participation in this year’s Tony Awards tribute to Cabaret composer John Kander and actor Joel Grey, who played the Emcee in the original Broadway production as well as the 1972 movie version.
The West End revival – officially titled Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club – swept the 2022 Olivier Awards with seven wins including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor and Actress in a Musical (Redmayne and Buckley), and Best Director (Rebecca Frecknall). Supporting Actor and Actress in a Musical awards went to Elliot Levey and Liza Sadovy.

Exclusive: Toheeb Jimoh, who plays AFC Richmond’s goal-scoring Sam Obisanya on Ted Lasso will tackle rhyming couplets when he and Red Rose actress Isis Hainsworth play William Shakespeare’s star-crossed lovers in what’s expected to be a sizzler of a Romeo and Juliet production in London this summer.
The scorching heat comes from its director Rebecca Frecknall, associate director of north London’s Almeida Theatre. She lit up the West End with an acclaimed 2021 revival of Kander and Ebb’s Cabaret at the Playhouse Theatre, now transformed into the Kit Kat Club.
Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse) and Jessie Buckley (Women Talking) both won Olivier Awards for their performances as the emcee and Sally Bowles, respectively.
Those parts now are being played by John McCrea (Cruella) and Aimee Lou Wood.

On stage, drag artist Aphrodite Banks is a femme fatale: Caked in war paint, with a waterfall of braids whipping around her waist, she’s possessed of the white-hot glare and forthright confidence to match her Amazonian height and bearing. Off stage, as Jules, he’s simply femme: that term for gay men who present or express themselves in a more feminine way, too often used as a slur or a dismissal even by their community brethren. (Open up a cruising app like Grindr and see how frequently “no fems” comes up as a requirement.) The former identity connotes swaggering strength; the latter, to many, delicate weakness. How those associations and stigmas battle each other in one man’s body is the driving conflict in “Femme,” a tense, sometimes startling revenge drama from British freshmen Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping.

The sinewy physicality and febrile intensity that George MacKay brought to films like True History of the Kelly Gang and 1917 gets amplified by ferocious self-loathing in Femme. Playing London thug Preston, festering deep inside the closet, MacKay is matched by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett as a drag queen he viciously attacks, who rises like a phoenix to play a dangerous game of revenge. Expanding their 2021 short film of the same name, debuting directors Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping bring plenty of provocative ideas about queer power dynamics and different forms of drag to the table. But the result is disappointingly sluggish, its payoff ineffectual.
One of the issues holding Femme back is uncertainty of tone. The writer-director team clearly means to maintain ambiguity about the intentions of Stewart-Jarrett’s character Jules, masking his end goal in real or feigned romantic intoxication. But that has the unfortunate side-effect of playing...

Ah, Creepshow. People of a certain age, like me, have fond memories of the 1982 film Creepshow. How couldn’t you, it was a tongue-in-cheek horror film written by Stephen King, directed by George Romero, and inspired by the EC Comics of the 1950s. The film used the typical format of the anthology horror comics, a short prologue followed by different stories. This also led to the more recent TV series Creepshow which, while a little uneven, was fun overall. This title, although called Creepshow, is more the spiritual descendant of those early EC books like Tales From The Crypt but, y’know, licensing agreements and all that. Each issue of Creepshow will feature two stories by different creators, and as we know everyone has at least one good horror story in them,...

The upcoming sixth episode of "The Boys" season 3 will be adapting the controversial "Herogasm" storyline from the "Boys" comics by Garth Ennis and John McCrea, and let's just say it involves the Boys infiltrating a superhero orgy.
/Film's Rafael Motomayor recently conducted an interview with Erin Moriarty who plays Starlight, the newly minted co-captain of...

At over sixty years old now and screening over three hundred movies over the course of two weeks, the London Film Festival is a huge event on the film festival calendar. And it’s no surprise that female-directed horror movies will be ever present at this year’s London Film Festival. Not only has Prano Bailey-Bond’s Censor taken the festivals by storm this year but in the last five year’s or so, Karyn Kusama’s The Invitation, Julia Ducournau’s Raw, Anna Biller’s The Love Witch, Coralie Fargeat’s Revenge and many other great genre movies have been well received and made viewers take a closer look at female directors.
With that in mind, two debut features and a returning genre director will be at this year’s festival.

Emma Stone has closed a deal to star in Disney’s “Cruella” sequel, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap on Friday.
The deal comes just weeks after another top star, Scarlett Johasson, sued the studio over its hybrid release strategy for “Black Widow” — a big-budget film that, like “Cruella,” was developed for exclusive theatrical release and promised significant backend compensation based on box office grosses.
“Cruella” was released on May 28 in theaters and on Disney+, and earned more than $220 million globally. Since any sequel won’t be released for several years, it’s not clear if the film will open exclusively in theaters, on the Disney+ streaming service or in hybrid release like the first one. The studio announced the sequel in June, shortly after the film’s release.

By now, every fan of “The Boys” knows that the upcoming third season of Amazon Prime Video’s very adult superhero series will feature its most adult storyline ever: “Herogasm.” But according to showrunner Eric Kripke, this already assumed to be incredibly raunchy episode of the show has proved to be so graphic in its initial takes that if he were to air that as the final product, it would surely be X-rated.
The episode is based on an infamous off-shoot installment of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson’s comic book series “The Boys,” from which the Amazon show is adapted. The arc, written by Ennis and illustrated by John McCrea, was a takeoff on comic book crossovers and featured Homelander (played by Antony Starr on “The Boys” TV series) and the other supes leaving Earth under the guise that they are going to fight an alien threat. But instead of doing that,...

Since Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland grabbed handfuls of eat me cake to become a ginormous box office smash, Disney have really started their live-action remake train rolling. It seems that with each passing year we have armfuls of new live-action remakes/reboots/prequels/sequels of their animated classics being primed for release. Thus far the results have been consistently enjoyable, if varying, with the finest probably being Jon Favreau’s incredible The Jungle Book in 2016. But, shockingly, their latest offering, Cruella, just might be the best since that point.
Much like Robert Stromberg’s Maleficent, you might say it was a somewhat challenging task to take one of Disney’s nastiest and most iconic villains and make a film about her origins. Naturally people will struggle to have sympathy for an attempted puppy killing fashion magnate, but Craig Gillespie’s very very pleasant surprise Cruella, does something a little different with the material.

A “Cruella” sequel is in the works at Disney, an individual with knowledge of the situation told TheWrap.
While the studio is in early development on the sequel, director Craig Gillespie and writer Tony McNamara are expected to return for the follow-up film. The first film was also co-written by Dana Fox.
“Cruella” debuted on May 28 in theaters and Disney+. It has earned $48.5 million globally so far and received positive reviews. It stars Emma Stone as the infamous villain Cruella de Vil, as well as Emma Thompson, Paul Walter Hauser, John McCrea and Joel Fry.
“We are very pleased with ‘Cruella’’s box office success, in conjunction with its strong Disney+ Premier Access performance to date,” a Disney spokesperson told TheWrap Friday. “The film has been incredibly well received by audiences around the world, with a 97% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes in addition to A’s in every demographic from CinemaScore on opening weekend,...

a series by Christopher James looking at the 'Gay Best Friend' trope
How many Arties are we going to see at Halloween this year? The “Gay Best Friend” in romantic comedies used to be the de facto example of empty virtue signaling. However, like most things in the film world, Disney has decided to do it bigger and... better? This weekend, Craig Gillespie’s Cruella has touted that it features “Disney’s first openly gay character.” All gays stand on the shoulders of their forefathers, and Artie (played by John McCrea) is no exception. In fact, his claim to the title is laughable not just because of how sanitized his character is, but also because Disney has declared having their “first openly gay character” more times than the boy who cried wolf.
So how does Artie compare to the other “first openly gay characters” in the Disney universe?...

This article contains Cruella spoilers.
Disney’s latest live-actioner, Cruella, is a prequel to 101 Dalmatians which sees Emma Stone’s budding fashion designer Estella begin to grow into her villainous alter-ego Cruella de Vil. By the end of the film ,she hasn’t yet reached the depths of Disney’s puppy-skinning diva – there’s time yet – but there’s a mid credits scene in Cruella which might hint at what we’ll see next.
At the end of the main narrative, Estella has inherited her father the Baron’s fortune, faked her own death and bequeathed the estate to her dear friend Cruella. She, Jasper (Joel Fry), Horace (Paul Walter Hauser), and Artie (John McCrea) all move into Hell Hall, with John the Valet (Mark Strong) who has proved himself an important ally. Here Cruella announces she has a few ideas for what their next move might be…

One of the summer's biggest movies will be premiering simultaneously in theaters and on Disney+ Premiere Access.
We had a chance to see Emma Stone's starring performance in the new Disney movie. If you've been wondering whether it's worth a trip into the vast world or the extra fee for the entire family to enjoy from the comfort of your own home, we hope to make the decision a little easier for you.
Most everyone is familiar with Cruella De Vil, who ranks as one of the top Disney villains of all time. Glenn Close is the most memorable live-action Cruella, with her performance cementing the evil villainess for her hatred of dogs and love of puppy pelts to her overt greed and vanity.
Cruella means to reset the narrative, unveiling a full origin story for Cruella and positing that, perhaps, she's been misunderstood.
Frankly, it's a little jarring...

The devil wouldn’t be seen dead in Prada in Disney’s latest live action reboot – a delve into the origin story of iconic 101 Dalmatians villainess Cruella de Vil. Born Estella (she will grow into “Cruella” later), you suspect Emma Stone’s budding fashion designer would find Prada way too basic, her punk rock tastes leaning more towards Vivianne Westwood in its attitude and aesthetic. She looks amazing. She’s a provocateur, an icon, a genius and a master show woman. What she isn’t is someone you could ever imagine killing a puppy, but more on that later.
Directed by I, Tonya’s Craig Gillespie, opening concurrently in cinemas and on Disney+, Cruella is the very best of the recent live action crop since The Jungle Book – a raucous, vibrant romp with some outstanding central performances. “Cruella” is loaded with pop-song needle drops throughout, but it’s the oft-used Rolling Stones hit at the end that ties it all together: The studio that gave us “Maleficent” and the director of “I, Tonya” have teamed up to rehabilitate yet another villain, in a film that could have just as easily been titled “Sympathy for the de Vil.”
Yes, the dastardly fashionista who wanted to skin 101 Dalmatians just to make a coat has been officially retrofitted here, but there’s plenty to enjoy if you don’t mind the fact that this new version of the character eschews fur, canine or otherwise, and doesn’t even smoke. Purists may balk, but viewers who think of this less as a reboot of Dodie Smith’s memorable monster and more as a Disney spin on Derek Jarman’s “Jubilee” for gay 8-year-olds will find “Cruella” to be flashy fun, even...

It’s true of most Disney films that the villain is the most memorable character, and often—like with Ursula in The Little Mermaid—the most beautifully drawn, as if even the animators enjoyed their company more. In no case is this more true than in 1961’s One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Outfitted in a huge mink coat lined with blood-red silk and with acid green cigarette smoke billowing around her, Cruella De Vil is more charismatic and entertaining than the upstanding protagonists (and this includes the dogs).
It’s probably inevitable in the current climate—where every thread of plot from Disney’s intellectual property is spun into a standalone project—that Cruella De Vil would get an origin story, one that explains how someone could be callous enough to murder puppies for a coat. But Cruella goes to great lengths to make the villain sympathetic on her journey from a Dickensian childhood,...

"There's something about poetic justice that's just so... poetic." Disney has debuted a second official trailer for the new live-action Cruella movie, the new story about the rebellious early days of one of cinemas most notorious – and notoriously fashionable – villains, the legendary Cruella de Vil. We already featured the first teaser trailer and a "Sneak Preview" recently for this one, and here's a health helping of more footage. This reinvention of the classic 101 Dalmatians (though this only seems to have 3 dalmatians this time?) focuses on its evil fashionista villain instead, but still does have dogs and lavish costumes. Emma Stone stars as Cruella de Vil, with Emma Thompson, Mark Strong, Paul Walter Hauser, Emily Beecham, Joel Fry, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and John McCrea. Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan creates the dazzling and imaginative costumes, which take on a life of their own. Honestly, I'm still thinking this will ...

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” will pay tribute to its source material in the raunchiest of ways for its upcoming third season: by adapting the infamous “Herogasm” arc from the comics that fans have been begging for since the superhero series premiered.

The first issue of Marvel’s Yondu solo series is due out this week and, thanks to this preview page, we now know that it’ll kill off one of the Guardians of the Galaxy. Well, at least one of the Guardians in the McU.
Yondu, which will follow the 21st century version of the character closely based on Michael Rooker’s portrayal in the movies rather than the classic iteration, begins with the Ravager captain answering a distress call by one of his space pirate cohorts. In these pages, it’s confirmed that Yondu arrives too late to help out, with Kraglin – and many other Ravagers – already dead.

Attorneys general from 48 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico appeared in front of the Supreme Court on Monday to unveil a major antitrust investigation of Google, the latest scrutiny in Washington facing the tech giant.
The investigation, which involves top state legal officials from both parties, initially will focus on advertising and search, but the state officials said that the probe could grow to encompass other areas including video, where Google’s YouTube is a dominant player in user-generated uploading sites.
Hollywood studios largely have been watching from the sidelines as tech platforms face increasing pressure from lawmakers over a host of issues, including their collection of data and the way that they police their platforms for inflammatory content. Showbiz lobbyists long have pressed Google to do more to fight piracy, even as the company forges content partnerships with industry players.

Showbiz lobbyists long have pressed Google to do more to fight piracy, even as the company forges content partnerships with industry players.
An MPAA spokesman declined comment on the latest investigation,...

Uncanny X-Men #11-#15 Writer: Matthew Rosenberg | Artists: Salvador Larocca & John McCrea | Colourists: Rachelle Rosenberg | Letters: Joe Caramagna
I want to start things off this week for looking at how Wolverine is being reincorporated into the X-Men universe via his appearances in the flag ship book Uncanny X-Men. I read the first six issues digitally and I found them to be very consistent. Its biggest strengths are that it gives as much equal page time to each character in a very large cast as possible. There is a great blend between the older established fan favourite characters and the new cult characters with online cult followings. I see it as paying great respect to X-Men stories past and present. Also even after countless X-Men stories since the 60′s the first six issues to this incarnation of Uncanny manages to feel fresh and new and that is its crowning glory. I recommend checking it out,...

“And if you’re people are the best, tell me why are you wearing a vest?” he sings. “This investigation into disinformation keeps putting everyone to the test/ So now we are getting drunk; what was sinking now is sunk/ And everything we were just trying...
