Veena Sud's 2010s TV series The Killing (based on Forbrydelsen by Søren Sveistrup) is still one of the most enthralling viewing experiences I've ever had, so I'm especially thrilled that Veena's 2020 Quibi series The Stranger (starring Maika Monroe as a rideshare driver who encounters a killer client plalyed by Dane DeHaan) has been re-cut as a feature film that will arrive on Hulu on April 15th:
Press Release: - TV creator and filmmaker Veena Sud and Hulu announced today that they are teaming on the release of Sud’s latest project, The Stranger. The horror film, which stars Maika Monroe (star of It Follows and Neon’s upcoming Longlegs), Dane DeHaan (recently seen in Oppenheimer and star of HBO’s The Staircase) and Avan Jogia, was written and directed by Sud, whose previous work includes the Emmy-nominated AMC/Netflix mystery series The Killing and police violence drama Seven Seconds,...

Rapace can currently be seen in Constellation, an eight-part Apple TV+ thriller in which she plays an astronaut, Jo Ericsson, who returns to Earth after a disaster in space to find parts of her life and her family subtly upturned. When the news broke that Scarlett Johansson had been hired to star in Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin in 2013, a lot of people were caught off guard. After all, just a few years prior, David Fincher famously refused to cast the Lucy actress in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011) because he felt she was too sexy for the role.
Well, it seems The Zone of Interest director saw something in Johansson that Fincher did not. Not only that, Glazer, 58, was proven right when Under the Skin was chosen as the best film of the year by multiple critics and publications.

Brit Marling spent the summer of her junior year at Georgetown University interning at Goldman Sachs, an investment firm that this very publication once called “a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity.” She ended that summer with a cushy job offer — only to reject it and, along with her pal Mike Cahill, head to Cuba to film a documentary about boxers and ballerinas caught in the middle of the U.S.-Cuba imbroglio. Marling drank from the capitalist cup, and it left a very bitter taste in her mouth.

In the opening scene of the new FX miniseries A Murder at the End of the World, a woman named Darby stands in front of a small bookstore crowd to do a reading from her true crime book The Silver Doe. She is very young, speaks haltingly, and seems determined to vanish inside her voluminous red coat and the hoodie she’s wearing beneath it. As she fumbles through her introductory remarks, audience members begin to stand up and leave, convinced that this odd person has nothing of interest to say.

If David Fincher’s meticulously stylized film about a cold-blooded killer is something you appreciate, then the auteur’s other works are probably already on your favorite list. On the other hand, if it’s something you just happened upon and you’re now desperate for some crime thrillers that are gripping and process-driven, then this list is for you. An immersive experience with dark and hollow characters, this list contains the perfect follow-up to Fincher’s latest, with just as gritty characters and more thrill and excitement.

Once (or even twice) apparently isn’t enough when it comes to Stieg Larsson‘s “Millennium” trilogy. Variety reports that Amazon MGM Studios has a new series adaptation of Larsson’s nordic noir book series in the works; moviegoers may better know them for “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo,” which David Fincher did his own take of back in 2011 as part of his lean, mean, airport paperback adaptation phase that also included 2014’s “Gone Girl.”

The in-the-works series adaptation of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” from Amazon MGM Studios has tapped Veena Sud as showrunner, TheWrap has learned.
News of an Amazon adaptation of “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” can be traced as far back as 2020. Amazon MGM Studios and Left Bank Pictures, which is part of Sony Pictures Television, will produce.
Based on the books by Stieg Larsson, the series’ logline states that the project will “take the iconic and much-loved character Lisbeth Salander and place her in today’s world — with a new setting, new characters and a new story that will resonate with fans of the original and thrill a whole new generation.”
Sud is best known for developing and executive producing “The Killing” for AMC. Based on the Danish series “Forbrydelsen” (translated as “The Crime”), the series followed homicide detectives Sarah Linden (Mireille Enos) and Stephen Holder (Joel Kinnaman) as they investigated various murders.

Variety has learned exclusively that Veena Sud will head up the series, which will be set in the world of the so-called Millennium novels originally written by Stieg Larsson.

A pulse-pounding, pulled-from-the-headlines story of political intrigue set against the backdrop of Europe’s green revolution is at the heart of “Greater Adria,” an ambitious, pan-European co-production being prepped by some of the continent’s top independent TV producers.
The series, co-created by Nebojša Taraba and Simona Nobile, is produced by Taraba for Croatia’s Drugi Plan, Peter Nadermann of Germany’s Nadcon Film and Marco de Angelis for Italy’s Fabula Pictures. Also on board is Belgian distribution and production outfit Lumiere, the leading distributor in the Benelux region, while public broadcasters Hrt from Croatia and Rtv of Slovenia are among the financiers.
“Greater Adria” begins with a trans-national European green party calling for a referendum to ban all present and future exploitation of oil and gas in the Adriatic Sea. But the unexplained death of a well-known Italian scientist in the coastal town of Rijeka fuels suspicion of a sprawling international conspiracy.

Actor Noomi Rapace burst onto the international film scene as the punk rock hacker Lisbeth Salander in "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo," based on the posthumously published bestseller from author Stieg Larsson. Her performance put her on the shortlist to star as devout archaeologist Dr. Shaw in Ridley Scott's long-gestating "Alien" prequel, "Prometheus." Rapace reportedly beat out Carey Mulligan and Natalie Portman for the role, garnering full support from Scott to make the part hers, despite competition from some of the most notable actors in Hollywood.
In "Prometheus," Scott wanted to make a film that had connective tissue to his original 1979 blue-collar space slasher, but avoids being a generic retread featuring an unstoppable Xenomorph. The seeds of "Prometheus" began as a prequel to answer some of the mysteries discovered on the planet Lv-426 by the crew of the Nostromo. Instead, the origins of the space jockey, for example,...

The 2019 film, “Knives Out,” is a prime example of a murder mystery done right. In the movie, detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) is called in to investigate the mysterious death of a wealthy patriarch who was found dead the morning after his birthday dinner party.
All of the family members who were present at the party are suspects in his murder investigation, making every dysfunctional aspect of every relationship a liability. The ensemble cast includes Ana de Armas, Jaeden Martell, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, and Chris Evans. The movie is a perfect example of how the smallest details can become clues in a closed-space mystery. Every detail in the movie is carefully crafted to create a puzzle that is both engaging and perplexing.

The vast forests of Sweden possess both beauty and tranquillity – but also drama and mystique. Through the short story, visitors receive an immersive experience of the country’s enchanted nature – home to some of the world’s most famous folkloric beings.
For centuries, the Swedish people have told supernatural stories to help make sense of events that could not be explained through logic alone. Sky has unveiled one of its biggest factual slates yet, greenlighting six shows including documentaries on the assassination of Swedish Prime Minister Olof Palme and the Italian 1990 football World Cup, and a royal factual drama told through the eyes of Queen Victoria’s granddaughters.
The shows will air across Sky Documentaries, Sky Crime, Sky Nature and Sky History over the next year and come as the Comcast-owned pay-tv giant prepares for a swanky London do tomorrow night, at which they will be presented.
Leading the slate is The Assassination of Olof Palme, a thriller-esque four-part series set in the Scandi Noir world of Cold War Sweden when the Prime Minister was shot in 1986 on the snowy streets of Stockholm. What followed was a 36-year search for the killer, which consumed many including the late Girl With the Dragon Tattoo author Stieg Larsson.

To the west, there’s Sweden, a country that gave us Ingar Bergman, Let The Right One In and all those Stieg Larsson Girl with the Never-Ending Sequels films. To the south, we have Poland, a country that gave us not only Janusz Kamiński, but also Krzysztof Kieślowski, a director whose Three Colours trilogy are a rite of passage for prospective film students all over the world. It’s hard to stand out in a crowd when you’re being overlooked by your Scandinavian neighbors. However, sometimes a film comes out that is so interesting and so gripping, that it just refuses to be ignored. Case in point, the 2022 adventure-horror film Hatching.

In 2011, American audiences were introduced to David Fincher’s The Girl With A Dragon Tattoo, starring Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, and the late and great Christopher Plummer. Based on the 2005 Swedish novel by Stieg Larsson, the film finds financial reporter Mikael Blomkvist searching for truth behind the disappearance of Henrik Vanger’s daughter, Harriet. He enlists the help of Lisbeth Salander, a strange but brilliant investigator who doesn’t trust too easily. The film received high praise from both critics and audiences alike, notably Rooney Mara’s commitment to the role of Lisbeth Salander and Fincher’s impeccable direction. Financially, the film was

Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we’ll shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we take a deep dive into Federation Entertainment, the production-sales studio behind Canal Plus’ hit series The Bureau and Netflix Italian hit Baby. Founder Pascal Breton and CEO Lionel Uzan give us the lowdown on the company’s ambitions and why now is the perfect time to be in the game of creating pan-European content.
When French producer Pascal Breton launched Federation Entertainment in 2014, the veteran television executive had a hunch that the international production and distribution landscape was on the precipice of great change. The year before, he stepped down as CEO of Marathon Entertainment after 23 years, because the old model “was no longer exciting for producers.” Federation, he vowed, would anticipate market changes and respond accordingly with...

One of my favorite classes that I took as an undergrad was the capstone course for my degree in English Education. The syllabus for the class entirely consisted of the most disturbing books that our professor ever read for pleasure, and it featured many of my now-favorite books of all time. ICM Partners has taken a minority stake in Stockholm-based lit agency Albatros.
As part of the investment, ICM veteran Pete Stone will relocate to Sweden and help run Albatros alongside founders and managing partners Martina Österling and Elin Sandström Lundh. The duo founded Albatros in 2017.
The deal with Albatros is part of ICM’s effort to expand its global footprint in key territories. It comes on the heels of ICM’s similar investment in London-based music agency Primary Talent International in March.
ICM Partners’ London office flagged an investment in Albatros as an opportunity for agency CEO Chris Silbermann. After meeting with Österling and Sandström Lundh, Silbermann realized they would be a good fit with ICM’s existing lit operations. The Nordics have become a hot territory for Hollywood IP, from novelist Stieg Larsson’s “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” series to TV formats and films.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo lives!
Amazon is looking to revive the franchise with a TV series.
Once again, the project, would have Lisbeth Salander, the hacker character at the wheel of Stieg Larsson's best-selling Millenium trilogy of crime novels.
However, the project comes with a major caveat:
The character would be placed in today's world, with a brand new setting, new characters, and a storyline that is not adapted from the original work.
This is undoubtedly an attempt to lure in new viewers to the franchise, as opposed to continuing the storylines from the movies.
Amazon Studios and Left Bank Pictures are working with Sony Pictures TV on the project. Sony released the 2011 film based on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which boasted a cast that included Rooney Mara in the titular role, and Daniel Craig.

Stieg Larsson’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was a modern literary phenomenon, spawning a mini-media empire. First published in 2005 in Sweden, it launched the ‘Millennium’ series, which went on to include The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest. Since then, we’ve seen both American and Swedish movie adaptations, with Noomi Rapace, Rooney Mara and Claire Foy taking turns playing iconic hacker hero Lisbeth Salander.
Now it seems that we’re in for more, as Variety is reporting that Amazon and Sony are teaming up for a new TV adaptation of the property. Fortunately for viewers that might be getting a bit tired of the original stories, the upcoming show is set to break new ground, as it’ll take place in a separate continuity to the books, imagining what Lisbeth Salander would be like in the 2020s.

When the Nordic entertainment group, one of Scandinavia’s largest media groups, announced last month during the Goteborg Film Festival that it was pulling out of non-scripted content to focus on scripted drama, and film production and distribution, it underscored two market trends in the Nordics: Subscription-based services, whether local or global, are driving the region’s booming drama business, and going forward, the investment into content will be more evenly split between Scandinavia series and movies.
Since Scandinavia is one of the first overseas markets where Netflix and HBO Nordic launched as early as 2012, local streaming services such as Viaplay, CMore and Elisa Viihde reacted fast and stepped up their investment in drama in order to compete. It paid off: Today, unlike in other European regions where local Svod services have either shut down or struggled, the Nordics are home to several powerful local streaming services that are coexisting alongside Netflix and HBO Nordic.

The Swedish film “Force Majeure” was a critically acclaimed darling but not exactly a box office hit. So there was an opportunity to take the film’s black humor and install the American charms of Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell to see how it might fare commercially in “Downhill,” opening this weekend. But surprisingly, even box office hits abroad don’t always translate when remade with American actors, and the ones that do rarely resemble their original inspiration. Here are the highest-grossing American remakes of foreign films (all domestic box office figures via Box Office Mojo).

Already the highest-grossing Danish film ever — with each of its predecessors following closely behind — “The Purity of Vengeance” is the fourth adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen’s hugely popular “Department Q” novels about a Copenhagen cold-case police unit. It will also be the last in this particular series, as the screen rights have now transferred from Zentropa to Nordisk, with any future “Q” movies unlikely to retain the same cast or behind-scenes staples.

Those expecting a documentary focusing on Stieg Larsson’s huge popular “Millennium” series — the high-grade pulp mysteries he wrote as a kind of hobby, and which weren’t published until after his death in 2004 at age 50 — are likely to be disappointed by “The Man Who Played With Fire.” The thing for which Larsson is posthumously world-famous is just barely touched on in Henrik Georgsson’s feature, though clips from the spinoff Swedish and U.S. features are scattered throughout.
Instead, this nonfiction biopic concentrates on something even more compelling: Larsson’s life pursuit of tracking extremist far-right groups as an investigative journalist, a personal obsession that made him an expert in a field that’s only grown more politically relevant since his demise. You don’t get a lot of Lisbeth Salander here. But you do get an overview of fascist/nationalist movements in Sweden and beyond over recent decades,...

Zdf Enterprises has bought into Nadcon, the German film and TV banner that co-produced upcoming Berlinale opener “The Kindness of Strangers.” Nadcon was co-founded by Peter Nadermann, one of the pioneers of the Nordic Noir genre.
The company was created in 2012 by Nadermann and German film and TV giant Constantin. Zdfe is the commercial arm of German pubcaster Zdf and said Monday that it had taken over Constantin’s stake in Nadcon. The deal gives it a 49% stake in the business.
Former Zdf and Zdfe executive Nadermann holds the remainder and stays on as managing director. His extensive credits include genre-defining Scandi series “The Killing” and “The Bridge” as well as Stieg Larsson’s “Millennium” trilogy. Cologne-based Nadcon’s recent work includes the buzzy Swedish-Danish series “Greyzone” and the highly anticipated Lone Scherfig movie “The Kindness of Strangers.”
