Exclusive: Altitude Media Group has boarded a documentary shot entirely inside the Grand Theft Auto video game world.
Grand Theft Hamlet will follow the story of out-of-work theater actors Sam Crane and Mark Oosterveen, who had the idea to stage a full production of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ within Grand Theft Auto 5 during the dull days of the third Covid-19 lockdown in the UK three years ago.
Indie studio Altitude has taken worldwide rights after striking a deal for the “hilarious and profoundly moving” film, which Crane and Pinny Grylls wrote and directed. The doc gets its worldwide premiere at SXSW on Sunday (March 10) and will get a European premiere at Cph:dox.
“We are extremely proud and excited to be partnering with Pinny, Sam and the whole team on Grand Theft Hamlet and cannot wait for audiences to experience this singular and masterful piece of machinima filmmaking,” said Altitude Film Sales Managing Director Mike Runagall.

Exclusive: Lisa Steen’s debut feature Late Bloomers, starring Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy franchise), is the latest starry festival indie to have secured North American distribution through Vertical.
Other recent pickups for Vertical include the Sundance genre-bender Your Monster starring Melissa Barrera, true crime doc The Speedway Murders, Brittany Snow’s SXSW-premiering directorial debut Parachute, and the Zoe Saldaña thriller The Absence of Eden co-acquired with Roadside Attractions, to name just a few.
Specifics as to the release plan for Late Bloomers haven’t been disclosed.
World premiering at SXSW 2023, the film centers on Louise (Gillan), an aimless and recently single 28-year-old Brooklynite, who drunkenly falls while stalking her ex and breaks her hip. This lands her in a physical therapy ward full of people twice her age. There, she meets Antonina (Margaret Sophie Stein), a cranky elderly Polish woman, who speaks no English. The final month of the year has arrived, and with it an early Festivus bounty of news (very exciting!) about the 2024 Film Independent Spirit Awards, which are happening once again on February 25, back on the beach in Santa Monica. “American Fiction,” “May December” and “Past Lives” dominated the 2024 Independent Spirit Awards nominations on Tuesday, picking up five nods apiece. The three movies are all up for best feature, where they will battle it out against “All of Us Strangers,” “Passages” and “We Grown Now.”
The annual honors recognize the best of television, as well as film. “The Last of Us,” a sci-fi epic that was a ratings hit for HBO, and “I’m a Virgo,” an absurdist miniseries from Boots Riley that was produced by Amazon, led the small screen crop, with four nominations each. Only new TV shows that have run for one season and were released between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31 of this year are eligible for awards. That’s why some big-budgeted fare was deemed eligible or, in the parlance of the show, independent.

The first fully in-person Sundance Film Festival since 2020 is around the bend, with the Utah-based event running January 19-29. While the festival revealed more than 100 feature-length films in December, Sundance has announced five more world premiere features, plus four throwback screenings from past festivals.
The latest feature films world premiering at the upcoming festival are “Beyond Utopia,” playing in the U.S. Documentary Competition section; “Flora and Son,” A24’s “Earth Mama” and “Past Lives,” playing in the Premieres section; and “Stephen Curry: Underrated,” playing in the Special Screenings section. Perhaps the buzziest addition is “Flora and Son,” the new musical from Dublin director John Carney. Starring Eve Hewson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, this is “Once” director Carney’s first film since 2016’s “Sing Street.” Since then, he has served as showrunner, director, and executive producer on the Prime Video anthology series “Modern Love.”

Magnolia Pictures has acquired the U.S. rights to “There There,” the latest film from “Support the Girls” and “Results” filmmaker Andrew Bujalski, out of the Tribeca Film Festival.
“There There” is described as an “uneasy comedy” about a delirious mirror image of everyday life in a distinctly twisted and discordant world. The film stars Jason Schwartzman, Lili Taylor, Lennie James, Molly Gordon, Avi Nash, Annie La Ganga, Roy Nathanson and Jon Natchez.
Magnolia plans to release the film later this year.
“There There” is something of an experimental film in which eight different performers were each filmed in isolation but then brought together in the edit. The story involves characters negotiating trust with one another. Oddly enough, the actors in the film were never within 1,000 miles of each other, and each gave their performances not even within a week of one another.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired U.S. rights to “There There,” Andrew Bujalski’s ensemble comedy starring Jason Schwartzman and Lili Taylor.
The film had its world premiere at Tribeca. The deal re-teams Bujalski with Magnolia which previously distributed the director’s “Support the Girls” and “Results.”
“We’re jazzed to be distributing another terrific film from Andrew Bujalski,” said Magnolia President Eamonn Bowles. “‘There There’ is wonderful look at where a lot of us are today,” continued Bowles. Magnolia plans to release “There, There” later this year.
Bujalski said he couldn’t imagine a better partner than Magnolia to bring this “deeply off-kilter movie to the world.” “As distributors their savvy is extraordinary, but moreover, their level of commitment, both to filmmakers and their audiences, is unparalleled,” added the helmer, who also penned the film.

As the film and TV industry strives to make up for its long history of deficiencies when it comes to diversity and inclusion in front of and behind the camera, over 100 Black creatives and allies in the filmmaking and advertising communities have teamed to create the Black Filmmakers Collective to launch “Change the Lens,” a new pledge to increase the number of Black workers at all levels.
Led by production company Imperial Woodpecker’s Rohan Blair-Mangat, Olympian-turned-filmmaker Savanah Leaf of Park Pictures and producer Alli Maxwell of Florence production company, the industry pledge calls on companies to commit to increasing the diversity of their department heads, crew at all levels and more, to reflect at the 15% Black representation that we see in the United States and London population. The pledge also asks production companies to consult a Head of Diversity & Inclusion, a role that would mediate and oversee implementing the diversity pledge within each company.
