Jeremiah Green has died. The Modest Mouse drummer, whose stage 4 cancer battle was revealed in December, died on New Year’s Eve, the band announced on Instagram. He was 45.
“I don’t know a way to ease into this: Today we lost our dear friend Jeremiah,” the band wrote alongside a photo of the late drummer. “He laid down to rest and simply faded out.”
“I’d like to say a bunch of pretty words right now, but it just isn’t the time,” the post continued. “These will come later, and from many people. Please appreciate all the love you give, get, have given, and will get. Above all, Jeremiah was about love. We love you.”

Jeremiah Green is battling cancer. The 45-year-old Modest Mouse drummer’s mom revealed her son’s stage 4 cancer diagnosis in a Christmas day Facebook post.
“Please send healing vibes for my son, Jeremiah Green, who is battling stage 4 cancer,” Carol Namatame wrote. “He’s is so strong and so brave and hanging in there!”
Later, Marco Collins, a Seattle-based radio personality, gave more insight into Green’s cancer battle.
“Just found out my friend Jeremiah Green (Modest Mouse) has pulled off the band’s tour because he is currently undergoing chemo treatments to battle Stage 4 Cancer,” Collins wrote on Facebook. “Despite having a stage 4 diagnosis, his prognosis is good! Also his oncologist is a big Mm fan (so he’s got that in his corner!)”
“Sending him nothing but love & healing energy!” he added. “Get well buddy. We’re all pulling for you!”
Green has yet to publicly speak out about his diagnosis.

Long before Modest Mouse became guest stars on "The O.C." (remember that?) and best-selling Grammy nominees, they were just another Northwest indie rock band. But they showed tremendous promise from the start. And their second album, the sprawling double LP The Lonesome Crowded West, was an early highlight with the ambition (The Moon And Antarctica) and sharp songwriting (Good News For People Who Love Bad News) they would show on subsequent albums. It's hard to believe that it's been fifteen years since the album dropped on the tiny indie shingle Up Records.
Well, to help commemorate the occasion, Pitchfork has put together a pretty comprehensive, 45-minute documentary about the album. Frontman Issac Brock participates in the short film, talking about the influences (seeing Issaquah where he grew up get "mall fucked") along with drummer Jeremiah Green and bassist Eric Judy. Just as was predicted last week, Gm today announced a huge expansion of OnStar--and the predictions were pretty much on the money. A quick recap: Though OnStar was one of the first in-car communications systems, it sat fallow as an emergency and safety tool while others, especially Ford Sync (a collaboration with Microsoft) added social networking and media controls.
But Gm doesn't want to be left behind, and today the company showed off the new OnStar. This ninth generation of OnStar is, in Gm's words, focused on "responsible connectivity," meaning Gm has read all those reports showing that communicating (say, by text messaging) can be even more dangerous than drunk driving.
That concern manifests itself in a few ways, some of which maybe aren't so welcome. For example, though OnStar will be able to send text messages via voice control, it'll only allow you to send one of a few...

Music isn't enough for the indie rock baned Arcade Fire. Not only are they collaborating with Spike Jonze on b-movie science fiction short film, but they just completed an interactive short film/music experience titled "The Wilderness Downtown". Directed by Chris Milk a popular music video and commercial director (you've probably seen the videos he directed for Kanye West, U2, Green Day, Courtney Love, Audioslave, Modest Mouse, Gnarls Barkley and yes, Arcade Fire). Wilderness is unlike anything you've ever seen before. The experience is a collaboration with Google which begins with the viewer entering in their childhood address. I strongly suggest closing or minimizing all your other program windows, as the first time I tried this some of the popup windows became hidden behind browser windows I had open. The experience also involves drawing a picture and writing a letter, all which becomes incorporated into the musical/visual experience. You...

When we spoke to Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell on Friday (August 6) on the grounds of Chicago's Grant Park, he compared his year-by-year memories of the festival to making wine. "Then you look back and all of a sudden you realize that a particular year wasn't a good year for making wine," he explained. While Farrell wouldn't let us know which of the past festivals he considers the least of the batch in his cellar, he can rest assured that 2007 was probably one of the best vintages in recent history.
Three years ago, Lollapalooza featured headliners like Pearl Jam, Muse, Modest Mouse and Daft Punk, but on the smaller stages, greatness was starting to gestate. In an extremely early performance, Lady Gaga played in the middle of the afternoon on one of the festival's smaller stages (and three years later, she closed the first night with one of the most memorable...

Everyone knows that explorer Christopher Columbus found some version of the Americas (though not actually the United States) in 1492, but were you aware that today is the day that he first set sail? Education! Sailing on behalf of Queen Isabella under the flag of Spain, Columbus was sent across the Atlantic Ocean to find a western sea route to India and China. He took three ships: The Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria.
In retrospect, Columbus' journey was amusing in its ineptitude. Three months into the trip, he arrived at what was probably Watling Island in the Bahamas and claimed it for Spain. Later that month, Columbus spotted what he thought was mainland China, but in reality it was Cuba. And several weeks later, Columbus set foot on land that he thought was Japan. In reality, it was the island of Hispaniola, where he set up a colony with his crew mates.

Though some audiences loved how Wavves’ sun-bleached falsetto vocals and buzzsaw guitar communicated the idea of adolescent ennui and Thc-infused sturm und drang, they seemed less impressed with actual scrapped tours and childish feuding with other bands. King Of The Beach benefits from a timely team-up with Jay Reatard’s former rhythm section and scrubbed-down vocals courtesy of Modest Mouse producer Dennis Herring, who provided just the push into the deep end that Nathan Williams needed to hone his interpersonal skills and sharpen the weather-damaged hooks of his lopsided sophomore effort, Wavvves. If this weekend sees you traveling to the cinema, you have a handful of excellent options. For the family, there is "Ramona and Beezus." For anybody who wants to catch up with the dominant conversation in film at the moment, "Inception" is still readily available for you. And for an action-packed spectacular featuring one of the most talked-about stars in the world, there is "Salt." The Angelina Jolie-lead spy flick packs in a ton of twists and turns as well as a series of amazing car chases, explosions, fights and stunts. In the wake of the actual Russian spy case that just went down in the news, "Salt" seems like a particularly timely tale of espionage. Plus, nobody kicks ass quite like Jolie.
In fact, in order to prepare for the intensity, you should probably take a spin through the video playlist below. It pays tribute to "Salt" in a number of different ways,...

Music is a funny thing, and the journey from A to B sometimes takes you through some pathless wastes. Witness one Bill Fox, he of the nondescript name and the unfailing melodic gift. Bill was the leader of a relatively obscure Cleveland band called The Mice in the mid-‘80s, who should not be confused with the contemporary pop-punk band of the same name from San Diego, or Modest Mouse, or any other musical rodent. Ever hear of these Mice? Me either, but I’m told their shows were legendary, which typically means that the 20 people who saw them might be...

Insights on romance from the recently reunited indie legends. My favorite band from adolescence reformed this year after a decade-long hiatus. In retrospect, for a musical guide through my teenage years, Pavement was a strange choice. Every girl I knew hated them; for every mixtape I gave to a crush, I would watch them fast-forward through "Summer Babe" or "Gold Soundz" to get to whatever dumb Modest Mouse song I'd put next. In fact, girls I didn't even know yet hated the band; by the time I got to college, all the cool chicks would be into harsh noise bands (Black Dice, Wolf Eyes) or trendy bands with repetitive names (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, !!!). Pavement, it seemed, was for a specific breed of dude, the type clueless enough to admit to still liking '90s indie rock. Yet I still maintained a satisfying love life. Why did [...]...

There are plenty of bands catering to the old-school sensibilities of nostalgia-hungry indie rock fans, but nobody does it better than the Hold Steady. In honor of their new album Heaven Is Whenever (which drops today), the group celebrated Record Store Day by releasing a limited-edition clear vinyl version that became an instant collector's item among aficionados. But even if you don't pick up the album on wax, the CD version is just as rewarding, as the artwork is a thing of beauty.
The album cover depicts a simple shot of a hand raised up toward the sky. "It seems elated, right?" frontman Craig Finn says. But then when you open up the CD case, there's a darker reveal. "It turns out it's a drowning hand — or at least someone submerged in water." For Finn, it ties into the lyrical themes of the album. "To me, the record is about struggle and reward,...

Wolf Parade are back -- all together -- for the first time since 2008's "At Mount Zoomer," and are trying to bend their sound back to a more fun, warmer mount, apparently. Two songs were released by Sub Pop today, culled from the forthcoming "86 Expo," due June 29. "What Did My Lover Say?" has a hulking, moody rhythm section playing under the dramatic vocal declarations, with hard-working, high-end synths trying to overpower the darkness. Dare I say it reminds me of latter day Modest Mouse (hell, Isaac Brock helped get them signed, afterall) and Franz Ferdinand's drummer? Spencer Krug and...

"I don't consider myself particularly intelligent or gifted," Colorado-based Nathanial Rateliff told me in an interview at the South By Southwest music conference this year. This, after having a completed a new album with famed producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Josh Ritter, Iron & Wine). After having picked up by Rounder Records to essentially "do whatever I want to do" -- whether that's release inspired solo sets (formerly under the performance name The Wheel) or take back up with his rock band Born In The Flood. As if James Mercer, frontman of indie standby The Shins and one half of new hip kid obsession Broken Bells, wasn’t already busy enough, now he’s contributing music to the soundtrack of the new documentary, 180° South. Along with Modest Mouse leader Isaac Brock (under the name of his side project, Ugly Casanova), the two fill out nearly all of the soundtrack’s fourteen songs. The album is complete with a Mason Jennings track, along with a tune from Love as Laughter.

Record Store Day was founded in 2007 as “a celebration of the unique culture surrounding over 700 independently owned record stores in the USA, and hundreds of similar stores internationally.” While it might sound like a Hallmark holiday, it’s more than just an excuse for record labels to try and actually sell records one day a year. After just three years, Record Store Day has become the rock world’s equivalent of Christmas in April. It doesn’t take much to get audiophiles to grab a cup of coffee and flip through crates of vinyl on a Saturday afternoon. But when musicians across the spectrum—from Baltimore duo Beach House to the Rolling Stones—are releasing limited-edition vinyl and unearthed tracks, you can expect bleary-eyed rock ‘n’ roll fans lined out the door at your local record store trying to get their paws on a copy of that 1,000-run yellow vinyl.

Looks like Modest Mouse have decided to build a July tour run around its Pitchfork Music Festival appearance on the 16th. Isaac Brock & Co. will kick things off on July 2 in the bustling music mecca of Royal Oak, Mich., continuing through July 24. The Pitchfork fest has been sold-out for months, so this at least gives fans an opportunity to touch base with the Epic band. Or is it ground to test new material? It's been a little over three years since the rock band's last "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank," and last year's Ep "No...

Isaac Brock isn’t just the bark behind Modest Mouse—he’s also something of a part-time A&R man who was responsible for bringing both The Shins and Wolf Parade to Sub Pop. He now curates the Glacial Pace label, which has yet to find that level of commercial success, but has nonetheless released a string of Mouse-approved bands. Portland’s Mimicking Birds is the latest, though it might owe more to Brock’s solo project, Ugly Casanova, than his main band. It’s the brainchild of hushed songwriter Nate Lacy, who chooses to lightly adorn his dark, whisper-sung ...

MTV News' Musical March Madness: Blink-182 Vs. 30 Seconds To Mars, Pearl Jam Vs. My Chemical Romance
It's Musical March Madness! The sprawling bracket — both a parody and a tribute to the Ncaa basketball tournament, masterminded by MTV News' James Montgomery — takes the 65 biggest names in rock, splits them up into four regions, assigns them seeds and puts them up against one another in a single-elimination series of match-ups in a winner-take-all contest. We're leaving it to you to decide an actual champ in this field of 65. Over the next few weeks, we will present a series of polls that will allow you to vote for the match-ups presented in MTV News' Band Bracketology. You vote for the winners, we'll keep advancing the seeds and, in the end, we'll have some sort of champion. What will the winner receive? Little more than our esteem (as well as that of the fans) and some Internet bragging rights.

I'm going to be honest: I didn't expect this — any of this — to happen.
Last week, when I wrote my "Musical March Madness" column, I did it mostly because I love college basketball, gambling and superfluous list-making. I made my selections largely at random. I left out a whole bunch of bands I probably shouldn't have (Linkin Park, Trent Reznor/Nine Inch Nails — two powerhouses inexplicably relegated to the Nit, sort of like North Carolina and UConn). I drew up a bracket by hand, for crying out loud.
I was not prepared for what happened next. Somehow, my sprawling, slightly stupid project became a fairly big deal, getting coverage on places like NPR and even The Ethiopian Review, and inspiring bands to rally...

Finishing at the third position on "American Idol" season 8, former truck driver Danny Gokey lands on Billboard Hot 200, rounding up the Top 3 with his debut album "My Best Days". A week after being released in the United States on March 2, the effort pulled in around 65,000 copies.
The selling number has made him breaking U.S. record by scoring the best opening-week sale by a debut country male artist since 1992. Moreover, the sizzling digital album tally which reached 19,000 downloads, has become the highest first-week digital sales by a debut country act.
Following the success of the album, Danny Gokey is billed as a supporting act for Sugarland's 2010 tour. He tweeted, "So I told u all a few days ago I had a major tour announcement. Here it is: I will be going on tour with Sugarland!!!!! I'm super stoked."

Look, I love college. I love basketball. And I love gambling. So March Madness is sort of like Christmas, Thanksgiving and my 21st birthday all rolled into one. For one glorious month, I am overjoyed, overstuffed and frequently make bad decisions (like picking Baylor to go to the Final Four this year). And on Sunday, as I sat on my couch watching Espn's apoplectic coverage of the 2010 Ncaa basketball tournament bracket, I had a thought: What if I combined my love of those things with my other true passion, music? (Oh, and making superfluous lists too.)

San Pedro, California — The Cold War Kids were looking for a place to disappear. For more than 100 years, San Pedro, a roughly hewn, ethnically mixed port town in the southern tip of Los Angeles County, has been about as good a place as any for people to do just that. Every morning, fishermen head out into the Pacific to ply their trades. In the lead up to World War II, the Navy kept a fleet of battleships docked here. And in the early '80s, local legends the Minutemen left town packed in a van, powered by their proletarian brand of punk.

On New Year's Day, Soundgarden put aside a decade-plus of acrimony (and Audioslave) and announced that they were re-uniting, for … well, they didn't exactly say why they were doing it, but we'll assume it had something to do with the promise of plum festival headlining slots, sold-out arena shows and, of course, boatloads of cash. Because, really, we can't see any other reason why they'd get back together.
Make no mistake about it: Though Soundgarden's 1997 split lacked the fireworks with which most mega-successful, multi-platinum rock acts tend to implode, it was by no means a friendly thing. Worn out by years on the road and weakened by the internal struggle between frontman Chris Cornell and guitarist Kim Thayil, Soundgarden played their final gig on February 9 in Honolulu, Hawaii, walked off stage and simply disbanded. Since then, nearly every member has said repeatedly that a reunion would never happen, and the...

Over the summer, Tk ran a comment diversion eliciting your favorite albums of the decade. At the time, obviously, the plan was to run it as part of Pajiba Music. Pajiba Music, however, ceased to exist on the site, but we were still left with a nice little diversion and I hate for all that effort to go to waste, so while these albums won't get write-ups (my brief foray into Pm was something of a disaster -- I'm not cut out for writing about music), I thought I'd at least tally up the mentions and compile a list of the Top 15 Albums, according to the Pajiba Readership.
It was something of a weird collection of music to choose from -- the lists tended toward the obscure hipster-y albums, though several less obscure hipster albums began to emerge and a general consensus began to form around the 15 albums below. It's...

Well, we made it. 2009 is practically in the books, and now it's time to look back on the rather, uh, zany year that was. Last week, I published my list of the year's Best Songs, and now, it's time for the albums. It's a fairly lengthy list, because, like I wrote in my songs column, there's perhaps no better way to sum up the year than by looking back on the soundtrack to it all. And it just so happens that there were plenty of albums that did just that.
But before we get to my list, I want to point out that, yes, I'm very much aware that "the album" is a fairly dead concept, but so is the idea that Obama is a socialist,...

It’s hard to say what’s best about big-bearded funnyman Zach Galifianakis’ music selections in his iTunes playlist. It could be the insight we get on The Hangover star’s listening habits, or simply that the list is a decent jumble of tunes all by itself. Perhaps the best part is the descriptions he writes for the tracks, explaining why each particular one is significant to him. Here we learn that he has been a “Prince man” all his life, he dreams of writing an album for Modest Mouse and that Rufus Wainwright makes him want to be gay. Fun, right? Check...

On their 2004 self-titled debut, The Cribs set themselves apart from the so-called “landfill indie” bands, in spite of the generic name and guitar-bass-drums setup: The Cribs had a wit and verve their compatriots couldn’t match. Part of that came from the trio’s minimal instrumentation, which produced an endearingly awkward strain in getting the songs close to their Strokes-aping goals. For their fourth album, The Cribs have taken in former Smiths/Modest Mouse guitarist Johnny Marr, producing a whole new kind of strain. The difference is audible from the rumbling opening chords of “We Were Aborted.” Though the ...

Since the tragic death of Heath Ledger 20 months ago, several music videos directed by the Australian actor have been released posthumously, including Modest Mouse's animated "King Rat" and Nick Drake's eerie visual representation for "Black Eyed Dog" (in which director Heath turns the camera on himself, and is pictured drowning in the bathtub). Yesterday, a new music video for the Oscar nominee's childhood friend, rapper N'Fa, surfaced. It is believed to be the final project over which Ledger had complete creative control.

There are so many reasons that Heath Ledger's death from an accidental drug overdose in 2008 at age 28 was a tragic loss for his fans. But in addition to the legendarily intense Australian star's Academy Award-winning on-screen performances, his posthumously-revealed skill as a director has provided proof that Ledger had vision beyond his thespian chops.
Minds were already blown earlier this year when Modest Mouse let loose the animated clip for "King Rat" directed and conceived by Ledger as a not-so-subtle ecological parable about our destruction of the oceans. And his posthumously-released 2007 video for the Nick Drake song "Black Eyed Dog" — a movingly dark black-and-white clip that ends with Ledger drowning himself in a bathtub — provided another dim chapter in the brooding actor's singular profile.
On Thursday, yet another Ledger-directed video, this one for his childhood friend rapper N'fa Forster-Jones, was released and it showed yet another side of the actor's multifaceted personality.

Michael Jackson's not the only fallen star with a posthumous project out this week. (Just the only one competing against unrealistically high expectations.) Just a few months after Modest Mouse released Heath Ledger's music video directorial debut, his directorial finale made its way online this week, courtesy of London rapper and Ledger childhood friend No Fixed Abode. According to the rapper, the Oscar winner filmed the three-and-a-half minute opus in his garage in Sydney in the months before his death in January 2008. The video, which features some slightly Joker-esque makeup, was also included in a tribute to Ledger shown during the Rome Film Festival earlier this month. "The idea was to...

Five years ago, Modest Mouse helped indie rock start fighting its way out of the musical ghetto with "Float On" playing just about every time MTV decided to show music videos—which seemed mostly to coincide with the 2am feeding for my then-infant son. The band's latest video for a brand new track called "Whale Song" might even be cooler. Created by Nando Costa and Bent Image Lab in Portland, Ore., the highlight is the giant snails crawling all over the amps. I also love how Isaac Brock seems to be floating as he performs, since that's how we captured the band for our cover last year thanks to a trampoline and a bunch of great sports in the band.
