Ry Russo-Young‘s “Before I Fall” really caught people by surprise at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Usually the term Ya (Young Adult) gets a bad rap from filmgoers, but “Before I Fall” draws on various film influences and makes them seem fresh.
Based on Lauren Oliver’s book of the same name, “Before I Fall” tells the story of Samantha Kingston (Zoey Deutch), a popular and beautiful high-school girl completely oblivious to the good fortunes she has in her life.

Director Ry Russo-Young forgot to feel the pressure. The Sundance ingénue's latest feature, Before I Fall, is an adaptation of the best-selling Y.A. novel about a somewhat reluctant high school mean girl, Samantha (Zoey Deutch), who meets her early demise in a car wreck, only to wake up the next day...and the next day and the next day on a seemingly endless loop.
Despite tween fans' rabid protection of their most beloved books and the fact that they can live in her Twitter mentions for the rest of time, Russo-Young isn't fazed -- or wasn't. "Uhh, you're freaking me out!" she joked during a recent call with Et, before explaining, "I actually took great comfort in the fact that I could look online and see what fans connected to about the book, what lines they were holding dear to their hearts, what moved them. Then those things, to me, were like, 'I...

In Before I Fall, Zoey Deutch stars as a popular high-school girl who finds herself reliving the last day of her life over and again. Though the role in Ry Russo-Young’s adaptation of Lauren Oliver's young-adult novel challenged her as an actor, it also brought back unpleasant preteen memories.
“My middle school experience would be equated to that of hell — it was horrible, it was really horrible,” she recalls to The Hollywood Reporter. “But this movie shined a light on something I had a difficult time understanding: the people who bullied me were most likely bullied as...

Weekend Preview:The final, R-rated, impale-happy, Hugh Jackman-cussing Wolverine film, Logan hits 4,071 theaters this weekend and Fox's guidance is $60 million. The studio is pulling its punches (or adamantium claws) though as that means they think it's heading for $14.7K per screen average. In a weekend where its competition is the well-reviewed holdover Get Out, the Groundhog Day Ya film, Before I Fall, and Lionsgate/Summit's faith-based film, The Shack, Logan's prospects seem better than that.Since moving out of the X-Men Academy to make it on his own Wolverine has had solid commercial, if not always critical, success. The first outing, 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine may have made $85 million its opening weekend (in 4,099 theaters for a psa of $20.8K) but it had a 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, a 6.7 on IMDb, a B+ on CinemaScore and nearly knee-capped the Deadpool character for all time. It ended up with $173 million domestic, $193 million...

Imagine having to relive the same day for an undisclosed period of time. Now imagine if that day was filled with snotty, self-obsessed, failed Mean Girls prototypes. Cringing yet? Then you’ll loooove Before I Fall, a Ya adaption that misrepresents the easiest of messages. Themes are simple – be excellent to one another! Except in order to do so, characters must first act like morally reprehensible, astonishingly plastic high school stereotypes. Because, redemption? Except director Ry Russo-Young resets the same day ad nauseum, so what’s to say characters change based on one freaky Friday? And then there’s – sorry, wait. I’m getting ahead of myself. Let’s start small.
Wow – what the hell did I just watch?
Zoey Deutch stars as Samantha Kingston, a privileged suburban teenager who takes life for granted. Her squad of betches live it up like queen bees, kissing the hottest boys and attending the raddest parties.

The premise of Groundhog Day, as well as some of its plot points and lessons are recycled for the chick-lit tear-jerker Before I Fall. Zoey Deutch plays Sam, a high schooler forced to relive the same day again and again but the new film has a more somber tone than the beloved Harold Ramis/Bill Murray classic, since what sets in motion Sam’s string of “daily do-overs” is her own death.
Sam is a 17-year-old girl who has it all: beauty, popularity, jock boyfriend Rob (Kian Lawley), a loving and wealthy family, and a trio of mean beauties as best friends (Halston Sage, Cynthy Wu, and Medalion Rahimi). Valentine’s Day is shaping up to be another perfect day in Sam’s perfect life. Bill Murray may not be around to wisecrack, but Zoey Deutch (“Why Him?”) shows plenty of versatile, captivating teen turmoil in the “Groundhog Day”-like scenario that is “Before I Fall,” the latest beloved Ya novel to get the glossy big screen treatment. With a construct that has a popular high schooler mysteriously reliving the same turbulent and invariably tragic day over and over, director Ry Russo-Young (“You Won’t Miss Me”) and screenwriter Maria Maggenti (adapting Lauren Oliver’s book) find plenty of sincere emotion and stylish suspense amidst the melodrama and expected platitudes. Plot: A popular teenager (Zoey Deutch) is doomed to relive the same, deadly, day over and over again when her and her friends, after bullying the school outcast, seemingly perish in a car accident. The term Young Adult (or Ya) tends to result in a groan, particularly with all the non-Hunger Games style future dystopia films that have saturated this market since Jennifer Lawrence killed stuff with a bow. Despite the sophistication of the writing, and the strong messages intended for teenagers, the film adaptations usually either flood the screen with saccharine nonsense or shy away from the things that matter. Before I Fall, based on Lauren Oliver’s melancholic Groundhog Day tragi-drama novel, retains almost all the trappings of the source material and is bolstered by an excellent performance from Zoey Deutch as Samantha, and the inherent positivity from its anti-bullying message. It is Valentine’s Day and Sam is ready to lose her virginity to her jerk jock kind-of...

For many years, filmmaker Ry Russo-Young was hustling on the indie circuit both as an actor and as a writer/director with her well-received second movie You Won’t Miss Me famously not being released until nearly two years after it premiered at Sundance. Its release was predicated on by winning the less-than-coveted Gotham Award for “Best Film Not Playing at a Theater Near You.” (It actually beat La La Land director Damian Chazelle’s first movie for that award, too!)
Her fourth movie Before I Fall, adapted from Lauren Oliver’s popular young adult novel, is a giant step forward for Russo-Young in terms of tackling someone else’s material and a movie she didn’t write.

It would be easy to write off Before I Fall as the Groundhog Day of teen weepies – but something raw keeps breaking through the formula to pull us in. Certainly one of the friendliest, and one of the more forthcoming, interviews I’ve ever conducted, Before I Fall director Ry Russo Young and I knew we did not have much time to chat, so we jumped into it rather quick. In no time, we were discussing the early false starts of this film adaptation of the Ya novel from Lauren Oliver, from it’s beginnings as a potential studio film at Fox to the eventual indie-styled production starring a fantastic Zoey Deutch.
So you’re meeting with Fox about Before I Fall…

The beauty of being a high school senior in your second semester is that it can seem like nothing matters for a minute. Friendships have been sealed, college applications have been submitted, and everyone is fully aware that the end of summer is going to shake things up like an etch-a-sketch, forcing them to start over from (what feels like) scratch. For a lot of teens — particularly the privileged ones — that brief period of time is a perfect storm of personal agency and emotional recklessness. Never again will they have so little responsibility, either to themselves or to each other.
It’s enough to make someone feel invincible, enough to make them feel like things are going to be this way forever.
Ry Russo-Young’s smart and sensitively told “Before I Fall” takes that idea as literally as possible, but it’s for that reason that her film is ultimately...

Zoey Deutch Halston, Sage Logan Miller in “Before I Fall” by Ry Russo-Young
To begin about this film is to say it is a ‘Ground Hog Day’ story.
The lead character, a popular high school girl, has an unremarkable — if a bit troubling — life, including difficult friends, challenging social life, some boy / sex issues and some big questions for her as to “what’s it all about?”
But why? Toward what end? How to resolve?
As the story begins Sam is one lucky teenager. She’s beautiful, rich, and popular, with the hottest boyfriend and the most loyal friends.
But she and her posse can be cruel and heartless; since elementary school they’ve relentlessly bullied one of their unfortunate female classmates.
On Friday, February 12th, driving home from a party, Sam is in a dramatic car crash.
This mysterious car wreck at the end of her day leads to her — what?...

Harold Ramis certainly didn’t invent it, but his Groundhog Day made the narrative loop device a mainstream mainstay, lovingly aped in everything from Source Code to Edge of Tomorrow to 50 First Dates. In Before I Fall, the loop treatment is utilized rather intelligently by director Ry Russo-Young, from Maria Maggenti screenplay adapted from Lauren Oliver‘s novel.

Ry Russo-Young was doing breathing exercises with me and her star Zoey Deutch before we sat down to chat about “Before I Fall,” her third film in a row to bow at the Sundance Film Festival. She was calm enough before she started breathing in and out in big, slow puffs, and she was positively beaming when we were done — with good reason.
Russo-Young may be a Sundance mainstay, but she’s never hit the festival with a film quite like “Before I Fall” – that is to say, a film that already has not only a well-regarded distributor (in this case, Open Road), but a set release date just a few weeks out. That’s one way to take the pressure off of the experience, but it’s understandable that the filmmaker would want to take a moment just to collect herself in the midst of the usual festival madness.

Adapted from Lauren Oliver’s successful Ya novel of the same name, director Ry Russo-Young’s fourth feature Before I Fall sees the indie director (Nobody Walks, You Wont Miss Me, Orphans) successfully transitioning to mainstream filmmaking. A new trailer has been released for the upcoming thriller Before I Fall, which plays on the concept of a time-loop like Groundhog Day. The story centers around a teenage girl who becomes trapped living the same day over and over again after she dies and starts to look the life she's been living in a very different way. It looks like it could be a solid film, and it's set to premiere at Sundance next week.

“Maybe for you there’s a tomorrow – maybe there are 1,000 – but for some of us, there’s only today.” Time travel, and the concept of reliving one defining moment over and over again ad nauseam, is something that’s been a fixture of the film world since Groundhog Day. That’s not to say Harold Ramis’ seminal comedy-drama was the first to dump its protagonist in a mind-bending time loop, but it’s certainly one of the more accomplished examples, and few movies have come close ever since.
And though it’s not strictly speaking apples to apples, Open Road Films and director Ry Russo-Young (Nobody Walks) are prepping Before I Fall for its premiere at this weekend’s Sundance Film Festival. It incorporates many of the same storytelling devices seen in Groundhog Day – the endless time loop, a protagonist in need of a life lesson – but instead favors teen drama over existential angst.

"It wasn't a dream. It really happened. Again." Open Road Films has also debuted a new Sundance trailer for the sci-fi film Before I Fall, from filmmaker Ry Russo-Young, which is premiering at the Sundance Film Festival next week. Adapted from Lauren Oliver's novel of the same name, this time loop story involves a high school teenager - played by Zoey Deutch - who ends up dying at the end of the night, only to wake up and restart the same day, which gives her a chance to "question just how perfect her life really was." The cast includes Halston Sage, Jennifer Beals, Logan Miller, G. Hannelius, Elena Kampouris, Diego Boneta and Alyssa Lynch. This still looks like a cheesy Ya movie, but I'm hoping there's something more to it, even just smart lessons to learn, or else why would it play at Sundance. Only time will tell. Take a look.

“Groundhog Day” remains the shining cinematic example of the (comedic) horror of living the same day over and over and over again. But for teenagers, where each twenty-four hours can play out like dramatic epic, the idea of reliving a heightened twenty-fours might seem terrifying, but that’s what “Before I Fall” dives into.
Based on the book by Lauren Oliver, this is a Ya movie bringing a slightly different flavor, with indie director Ry Russo-Young (“You Won’t Miss Me,” “Nobody Walks”) behind the camera for the story that follows Sam who relives the day she dies, over and over.

"Divergent" author Veronica Roth was featured at this weekend's Los Angeles Times Festival of Books on Sautrday, and during her panel with fellow authors Lauren Oliver, Lissa Price, Victoria Schwab and Kerri Majors, she had a lot of interesting authorial notes to share! As transcribed by the initiates at I Am Divergent, Roth talked a bit about her willingness to kill off characters and basically said that no one is safe (as she always has). "They do get into a bit of trouble in my books, but I think when I started my plan was not to get too attached and of course that doesn’t work obviously. Because by the second book I was pretty attached as I think it’s natural for an author to love their characters and want good things for them.
