Earlier this week, the Apple corporation released a commercial for its upcoming iPad Pro product. The commercial itself was less a positive demonstration of the new iPad and more of a sadistically gleeful ode to the encroaching dominance of the tech industry: in the spot, objects of human creativity are crushed into oblivion, and it's then revealed that the iPad has replaced all of what has just been decimated.
The commercial immediately came under criticism on social media, so much so that Apple had to issue a public apology a day later. While the ad is undeniably awful, the widespread, vitriolic backlash it received feels like a bubble bursting, as the ad's subtext seems to be the same core concept at the heart of generative AI programs: replace as many human beings as possible, at any cost.

Hailey Bieber is a well-known model and socialite, married to pop sensation Justin Bieber. The model has been in the news very often, mostly due to finding her name dragged into a fresh new controversy.
Bieber usually lets slide some of the rumors that she inevitably gets drawn into. However, she feels very strongly about any kind of speculation about plastic surgery. Thus, when a plastic surgeon claimed she had gone under the knife, she did not let the accusation go without repercussions.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” won Best Visual Effects at the Oscars this Sunday, and the team that brought Pandora to vivid life in James Cameron’s blockbuster took the stage to celebrate. But for one team member, the evening took a turn shortly afterwards, as senior visual effects supervisor Eric Saindon was rushed to the hospital for surgery immediately after his win.
According to a rep from Weta FX, the visual effects production company behind “The Way of Water,” Saindon experienced intense pain throughout the day of the Oscars and checked into a Beverly Hills hospital around noon. After testing negative for appendicitis and kidney stones, Saindon decided to still attend the awards ceremony, and received painkillers from his doctors.

The team behind Avatar: The Way of Water‘s long-expected Oscar win for Visual Effects learned first-hand how committed Academy officials and show producers are to keeping things moving.
Richard Baneham, one of four winners along with Joe Letteri, Eric Saindon and Daniel Barrett, took the trophy first and thanked director James Cameron, who was not in attendance. He also shouted out producer Jon Landau and a range of technical colleagues. Just as the Academy-allotted 45 second expired, music swelled abruptly and the camera panned away just as Saindon was heard saying, “We need to thank our families–“
As applause died down, the camera found Oscar host Jimmy Kimmel, who appeared to be ready for the play-off. “It’s unfortunate,” he said. “I happen to know before he was cut off, the Avatar visual effects team asked me to announce that if anyone’s interested, the visual effects after-party is at CGI Fridays.

Surprising no one, Avatar: The Way of Water collected the Oscar in visual effects for its jaw-dropping work that helped to propel the movie to more than $2.2 billion at the box office, making it the third highest grossing movie of all time.
In doing so, Weta FX’s production senior VFX supervisor Joe Letteri collected his fifth competitive award in the category at the 2023 Oscars. He now joins Ken Ralston (Forrest Gump) in holding five competitive Oscars apiece in the category. Both trail Denis Murren (Jurassic Park), who holds the category record of eight competitive Academy Awards.

As Gold Derby predicted, “Avatar: The Way of Water” won the Best Visual Effects Oscar on March 12 over co-nominees “All Quiet on the Western Front,” “The Batman,” “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Top Gun: Maverick.” James Cameron‘s highly anticipated sequel was heavily favorited to claim this trophy on Sunday night, especially considering the original “Avatar” (2009) also won the visual effects category 13 years ago. “The Way of Water” also earned Oscar bids this year in Best Picture, Best Sound and Best Production Design.
Accepting the trophies for “Avatar: The Way of Water” were Joe Letteri, Richard Baneham, Eric Saindon and Daniel Barrett. Letteri previously won four Oscars for “The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers” (2002), “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003), “King Kong” (2005) and “Avatar” (2009), while Baneham had a single statue on his mantel for “Avatar” (2009). Today’s Oscars win marks the first Academy Awards for Saindon and Barrett.

“Avatar: The Way of Water” is a sequel, but the VFX team had a mandate far beyond supplying “more of the same.” The follow-up to the 2009 original “Avatar” had many new demands — and these jaw-dropping innovations have helped make the film one of the top box-office films of all time.
Joe Letteri, heading up his team at Weta FX, tells Variety, “We were working on this film since the last one finished, identifying what we could do better. Then there was a big burst of research-and-development” about six years ago, when writer-director James Cameron delivered the scripts for this and three more sequels; that’s when they realized the full scope of the film, which takes place in water about 60% of the time.
For the first “Avatar,” they had developed a tool kit to simulate water.

“Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio” was the big winner at the 50th annual Annie Awards, winning five categories in the award show that honors the best in animation. Fellow Oscar-nominees “Marcel the Shell With Shoes On” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish” won three and two awards, respectively.

Following the success of 2009’s groundbreaking Avatar, James Cameron began writing a new story that would take Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña) and their children on an emotional journey in a new region of Pandora — moving from its bioluminescent forest to its seas in the hopes of protecting their family from the Sky People. “Our family is our fortress,” Jake Sully says in Avatar: The Way of Water, which this past week won a BAFTA for its visual effects and swept the feature competition at the Visual Effects Society Awards.
The director had been working with Weta FX and its senior VFX supervisor Joe Letteri, winner of four competitive Oscars, since they first teamed on Avatar. Letteri emphasizes that everything they do from a VFX standpoint is about supporting the story, but when he saw the new script, he knew they had their work cut out for them.

The Oscar for Best Visual Effects is particularly tough to predict because of the complicated system by which the nominees are determined in three stages. The members of the executive committee of the branch cast preferential ballots to determine 20 films for further consideration. These are then winnowed down to 10 semi-finalists, which were announced on December 21, 2022. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Visual Effects predictions.)
All members of the branch are invited to a virtual screening of excerpts from these 10 films in January at which potential nominees may discuss their work. Ballots are counted using a system of re-weighted range voting to determine the five nominees, which will be revealed on January 24. The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on March 12.

The entire voting membership of the academy will then vote for the winners, which will be revealed during the 95th Academy Awards ceremony on March 12.

Avatar: The Way of Water — which this week crossed the 2 billion mark at the worldwide box office and is now the sixth highest-grossing movie in history — earned a best picture Oscar nomination this morning, as well as noms for its production design, sound and visual effects.
But James Cameron, who has now directed three of the six highest-grossing movies ever — his 2009 Avatar sits at the top of that chart — was passed over in the directing competition for his groundbreaking film for the 2023 Oscar nominations. (The movie also missed an editing nomination; Cameron edited the movie, along with Stephen Rivkin, John Refoua, and the late David Brenner, who died in early 2022).
In this year’s best picture race, Cameron and producer Jon Landau (who together won best picture for Titanic, for which Cameron also claimed the directing trophy) are nominated alongside the producers of All Quiet on the Western Front, The Banshees of Inisherin,...

Avatar: The Way Of Water VFX Supervisors On How Kiri Was Created And Much More [Exclusive Interview]
Ever since Gollum in "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" blew audiences away by presenting a fully realized and believable digital character, it was clear that performance capture technology would be here to stay. Fast forward 20 years, and the technology has grown to such dizzying heights that there seems to be no limit to what the combined efforts of effects artists and performers can accomplish when it comes to creating new characters.
As proof, "Avatar: The Way of Water" doesn't just pick up the adventures of the Na'vi from the already impressive first film, but introduces new elements like the 14-year old Kiri (played by the 73-year old Sigourney Weaver) and the reborn-as-a-9-foot-avatar Colonel Quaritch (Stephen Lang), who plays scenes in real time with the shorter, 5-foot human General Ardmore (Edie Falco).

Back in 2001, with the release of Peter Jackson's fantasy film "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," the filmmakers faced a unique visual challenge. Multiple characters in the film were hobbits, a species of humanoids that stand about three feet, and they had to regularly interact with human characters double their height. Jackson had cast the 5' 6" Elijah Wood as hobbit Frodo Baggins, and had to use several clever techniques to achieve the height disparity between he and the 5' 11" Ian McKellan, playing the wizard Gandalf. Jackson employed forced perspective, and McKellan had to spend a lot of time in an all-green room, acting opposite a tennis ball on a stick. The tennis ball is meant to show an actor where they're meant to be looking so that they appear to be making eye contact once another character is keyed in.

The theatrical landscape has drastically changed in the 13 years since the original "Avatar" was released in theaters to massive financial success. But James Cameron necessarily has spent all that time since the 2009 release still in Pandora, creating his vision for a series of films that spans decades and tells a multi-generational story. Just as Cameron spent years developing new technology, he has also worked hard on the narrative side of things. The story of Jake Sully of the Jarhead clan would grow into something even more extensive than initially planned.
In the vein of massive productions like Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and even, to some degree, the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Cameron has carefully crafted an alien world filled with rich details. Pandora is filled with life and an ecosystem that makes the films feel even more real when paired with groundbreaking visual effects. However, none of this worldbuilding came easy,...

"Avatar: The Way of Water" is out in theaters after a wait of almost a decade and a half. That's a very long time in terms of VFX technology. Looking back at the original film, which was a technical marvel at the time, you can see how far we've come. "The Way of Water" has far more characters than the original film, plus new creatures, all of whom need to emote effectively on film. Very few of the characters in the sequel are human, meaning the crew used motion capture to record their performances. Then the VFX house has to take those performances and render them into the faces of the Na'vi.

The 90th Academy Awards has concluded and I think a lot of movie geeks are happy with the way things played out! I couldn't be more excited to see Guillermo del Toro win Best Director and his film The Shape of Water win Best Picture of the year!
We also saw Gary Oldman win Best Actor, which he definitely deserved! Frances McDormand, took home the Best Actress Award and Sam Rockwell won for Best Supporting Actor for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Then there was Jordan Peele, who won Best Original Screenplay for Get Out, which so freakin' cool!
Personally, the one film that I didn't think should have won was Call Me By Your Name for Best Adapted Screenplay. Molly's Game, Logan, Mudbound, and The Disaster Artist were all better films with better scripts!
Below you'll find a full list of the nominees with the winners bolded. Are you happy with the winners?...

“War for the Planet of the Apes” from Weta Digital could well be on its way to the elusive VFX Oscar after winning four Ves trophies Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton (including the top feature prize). Christopher Nolan’s “Dunkirk” won for supporting VFX, Pixar’s “Coco” earned four awards (including VFX for animation), and “Game of Thrones” took home five awards (including VFX for TV).
The “Apes” finale, directed by Matt Reeves, benefited from a Shakespearean performance from Andy Serkis as Caesar, with Weta working its wizardry in much harsher conditions for the performance-captured animation. Not surprisingly, “Apes” additionally won for Caesar, the effects simulations for the thrilling avalanche, and compositing. However, although both “Rise” and “Dawn” captured Ves prizes, neither won the Oscar, so “War” is not a certainty in its race with “Blade Runner 2049.”

“War for the Planet of the Apes” is nominated at the Oscars for Best Visual Effects, following nominations in the same category for 2011’s “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” and 2014’s “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.” Neither “Rise” nor “Dawn” won Visual Effects in their respective years, despite showcasing some of the most realistic effects in film today. “War” is Oscar voters’ final shot at rewarding the film franchise’s groundbreaking visual effects, but much like in previous years, it could be an uphill battle.
“War” is the latest nomination in the “Planet of the Apes” film series for VFX supervisors Joe Letteri, Daniel Barrett and Dan Lemmon, earning nominations for the first two films as well, with Joel Whist earning his first nom alongside them. Announcing the nominees for their 16th annual Ves Awards, the Visual Effects Society brought welcome news for Denis Villeneuve’s “Blade Runner 2049” and Matt Reeves’s “War for the Planet of the Apes,” each up for seven statuettes. “Despicable Me 3” is the most-nominated animated film of the year (5), while the most-honored title overall is “Game of Thrones” (11).

While Andy Serkis was completing the evolution of his remarkable Caesar in trilogy finale “War for the Planet of the Apes,” Steve Zahn’s Bad Ape introduced a new kind of chimpanzee to the franchise: a fast-talking, scene-stealing wild card. More than merely a foil, Bad Ape provided the key to understanding how rapidly the apes were evolving.
“We found this picture of a chimp on the internet and Mark Bomback and I developed that character in the script,” said director Matt Reeves.“The idea was to find this lonely, hoarder ape hiding in this ski lodge because he had been through a traumatic experience during the viral apocalypse. These are apes that didn’t have the benefit of Caesar’s leadership and would lead to future conflicts. But we didn’t want to tell that story yet.”

When Andy Serkis talks about Caesar, the revolutionary leader of the simian origin saga, it’s always in mythic terms — part Bible, part Shakespeare. He has brilliantly played the sentient chimpanzee from infancy to advanced adulthood in this unique “Planet of the Apes” trilogy. But in the finale, “War,” he rises to Moses-like stature, grappling with his darkest demons before freeing himself and his tribe.
It should make no difference that Weta wizards “capture” Serkis’s performance to create Caesar. It’s acting — “a human in ape skin” — only with the benefit of, arguably, the best photorealistic animation in the industry. And it’s about time that the Academy honors Serkis with a Best Actor Oscar nomination. The emotional performance is much more nuanced and transformative. And it’s also about time that Weta win the VFX Oscar, too, for the franchise, after twice denied.

“I am thrilled that Los Angeles is gaining another architectural and cultural icon,” said Mayor Eric Garcetti. “My office of economic development has worked directly with the museum’s development team to ensure that the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures will create jobs, support tourism, and pay homage to the industry that helped define our identity as the creative capital of the world.”

Strangely dropping a press release on a historic day where the nation's attention is elsewhere, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences revealed their annual list of new member invitees this morning. For those who criticize the makeup of the Academy there was some good news and the stark realization the organization still has a long way to go. The Academy has spent the last eight to 10 years attempting to diversify its membership and this year's class mostly reflects that. There are significantly more invitees of Asian and African-American descent, but the male to female disparity is still depressing. Out of the 25 potential new members of the Actor's Branch only seven are women. And, no, there isn't really an acceptable way for the Academy to spin that sad fact. Additionally, It's important to realize the 322 people noted in the release have only been invited to join Hollywood's most exclusive club.

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Covered in grime, splattered in blood, and trudging down the sun-baked backroads and brush-bordered trails this season, the stellar cast and crew of The Walking Dead have paid their dues and then some, and now they're getting a tip of the cap in return with seven nominations for the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. Also recognized in this year's nominations is Scream Factory's Nightbreed: The Director's Cut Blu-ray, NBC's Hannibal TV series, Only Lovers Left Alive, and many more.

A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.
