Indian Paintbrush acquires both Janus Films and Criterion in a private transaction: more details here.
Particularly for fans of physical media, ever since the Laserdisc days, The Criterion Collection has stood tall as a quality curator of cinema, and company that takes great care in presenting films. Founded all the way back in 1984, it was a pioneer in adding supplementary material to film releases, and was at the heart of the extra features boom that came with the early DVD era too.
Criterion releases have now arrived on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, with The Criterion Channel also available too in the US.
Furthermore, it works alongside Janus Films, which oversees a library of titles and distributes them too. Janus Films has been going since the 1950s.

Indian Paintbrush founder Steven Rales has purchased Criterion and Janus Films.
The mission and leadership of the companies will not change following the private transaction.
Screen Daily was first to report the news of the sale. “We have grown our brands and audience with dedication to a set of values reflected in the films we release, the way we release them, and the way we conduct our business with our valued partners around the world,” said Criterion and Janus Films president Peter Becker told the outlet. “We are excited to continue that legacy and pursue new opportunities now available through this relationship.”
Janus Films was founded in 1954 by Bryant Haliday and Cyrus Harvey, Jr., and has since become the preeminent distributor of international classic films in the United States. Sundance Film Festival is heading to London again this summer and the programme is full of cinematic goodies. More below.
The days are getting lighter, the sun is shining ever so slightly more now and we’ve packed away our thickest wool jumpers, although we still need some thick socks. That must mean one thing and one thing only.
Sundance Film Festival: London is almost upon us.
Some might say summer is coming too, but we’re mostly excited for Sundance London, which has just revealed their full programme for this year’s festival. The festival brings a fine selection of films which originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January, in Park City, Utah. The crème de la crème, so to speak.
The festival will open on 6 June with a screening of Kneecap, Rich Peppiatt’s Irish-language film and draw to a close on 9 June with Sean Wang...

Neon, the studio that backed Oscar-winners “Anatomy of a Fall” and “Parasite,” has ironed out a deal with Waypoint Entertainment, the production company behind “The Favourite” and “The Nice Guys,” to bring more mid-budget movies to the big screen.
The deal follows the company’s collaboration on the Hunter Schafer-led horror movie “Cuckoo,” which premiered at the Berlin Film Festival and SXSW. Waypoint’s investment will allow Neon to expand its production and distribution efforts, something it’s been attempting to do since the New York-based distributor explored a sale in 2022 as a way to grow its business. Though a deal with investor Steven Rales, the wealthy businessman who founded the production company Indian Paintbrush, never came to fruition, Neon has managed to bolster its footprint. It recently launched an international sales division to handle the global distribution of its films.

Nominated for seven Academy Awards, filmmaker Wes Anderson won his first Oscar this past weekend, the Best Live Action Short Film for his 33-minute short, “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch. But during the Oscar ceremony, Anderson was nowhere to be found and couldn’t accept in person.
Was the director thumbing his nose at the Academy? Not at all. As many suspected, Anderson wasn’t available as he’s about to shoot his new movie, rumored to be called, “The Phoenician Scheme.”

Wes Anderson Shares What His Oscar Acceptance Speech Would Have Been, And Why He Couldn't Deliver It
During this year's Academy Awards, at least one longstanding wrong was finally righted. Even as someone who's generally found Wes Anderson's work to be somewhat hit or miss, it's always felt like a serious oversight that the acclaimed filmmaker had yet to win a single Oscar. You're telling me the guy behind "The Royal Tenenbaums," "Moonrise Kingdom," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," and "The French Dispatch" could only muster a grand total of seven nominations over the course of 20+ years? Poppycock, I say!
Well, that ignominious streak finally ended this past Sunday. But while Anderson's long-overdue win came in the live-action short film category for "The Wonderful Life of Henry Sugar," he wasn't even in attendance to accept his award. Some viewers may have interpreted his absence as an intentional thumbing of the nose towards a voting body that hasn't exactly shown him much love over the decades, but...

With eleven feature films under Wes Anderson’s belt, we can now quickly add another. While the director’s recent batch of Roald Dahl adaptations were released as short films––so the first could compete for the Oscars––now that Anderson has indeed taken home his first Academy Award, he’s realizing his complete vision for the project.
Just after he nabbed his Oscar, Netflix announced they will release Wes Anderson’s anthology feature The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, combining all four shorts and adding a new original song by Jarvis Cocker, this Friday on the platform. Just as another Netflix anthology release, Coens’ The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, is considered a feature, from this day henceforth let it be known The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More is Wes Anderson’s twelfth feature.

After missing the chance to accept his first Oscar in person, following his win for Best Live-Action Short for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Wes Anderson has addressed the circumstances surrounding his absence and what he would’ve said in his speech.
“If I could have been there, I (along with [producer] Steven Rales) would have said ‘Thank You’ to: the family of Roald Dahl; the team at Netflix; Benedict [Cumberbatch] and Ralph [Fiennes] and Ben Kingsley and Dev [Patel] … and more [of the cast and crew],” Anderson stated. “And also: If I had not met Owen Wilson in a corridor at the University of Texas between classes when I was 18 years old, I would certainly not be receiving this award tonight — but unfortunately Steven and I are in Germany and we start shooting our new movie early tomorrow morning, so I did not actually receive the award [in person] or get a chance to say any of that.”

Wes Anderson took home his first-ever Academy Award on Sunday night (March 10th), winning the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film with The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, one of four Roald Dahl adaptations he made for Netflix in 2023. Now, the streaming giant has announced a repackaging of the four short films into an anthology entitled The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More, due out March 15th.
In addition to The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, Anderson and Netflix’s The Swan, The Rat Catcher, and Poison round out the titular “three more.” Each short pulls from a star-studded pool of actors, with Benedict Cumberbatch, Ben Kingsley, Ralph Fiennes, Dev Patel, and more appearing and reappearing throughout the collection. What’s more, the anthology will feature an original song by frequent collaborator Jarvis Cocker, as Anderson revealed in an official statement (via TheWrap).

In one of the biggest ironies of the 2024 Oscars, Wes Anderson — whose fans had been waiting for him to win an Oscar since The Royal Tenenbaums‘ nomination in 2001 — won his first-ever Academy Award but was unable to accept it in person. While the auteur didn’t get a chance to give his acceptance speech onstage, Netflix shared his statement on his win.

Wes Anderson is long overdue an Oscar. The iconic director has been nominated seven times and lost on all seven occasions. He earned his eighth nomination this year for Best Live Action Short Film for his Roald Dahl adaptation “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” (shared with Steven Rales).
However, Anderson could find himself trumped again as there is an impactful, emotional, heartfelt obstacle in his way: Misan Harriman‘s “The After.” Harriman, who rose to prominence as a photographer, has created one of the year’s most talked about short films with “The After.” The Netflix short follows David Oyelowo as a man who suffers an extraordinary loss and attempts to go through the ensuing healing process.

The deal is for roughly $15 million. Amazon MGM is targeting a wide theatrical release for the film in the U.S. and Canada, with international territories still to be determined. Like all of its titles, the ultimate home will be Prime Video.

Anderson is adapting four of Dahl’s short stories into four short films that will premiere on Netflix later this month.
The first trailer for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Ralph Fiennes, was released on September 14. The film is based on the 1977 short story of the same name, which tells the tale of a wealthy man who learns to see without his eyes and uses his newfound ability to cheat at gambling. Two seconds into the trailer for Netflix’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and even without the credits popping up on screen, it’s obvious this is a Wes Anderson production. Every frame – and every line of dialogue – screams Wes Anderson.
Ralph Fiennes and Benedict Cumberbatch lead a cast that includes Dev Patel, Ben Kingsley, and Richard Ayoade. Writer/director Wes Anderson produces along with Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson.
The short film (just 39 minutes) is set to premiere on Netflix on September 27, 2023.

The new trailer for The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is upon us courtesy of Netflix. It seems with every new Wes Anderson trailer that’s released the film looks like it’s the most Wes Anderson-y movie ever. This trailer follows suit as his signature symmetrical framing is present, as well as a frequent device of the actors narrating right into the camera, breaking the fourth wall. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar recently made its debut at the Venice Film Festival, and while it follows Anderson’s Asteroid City from earlier this year, it is not another feature-length film, but a short film that’s just over half an hour.
The official synopsis from Netflix reads,
“A beloved Roald Dahl short story about a rich man who learns about a guru who can see without using his eyes and then sets out to master the skill in order to cheat at gambling.

Wes Anderson’s new film, Asteroid City, may just feature his most stacked cast ever.
As previously reported, Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, and Tilda Swinton are some of the big names featured in the film, along with Margot Robbie, Steve Carell, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, and Bryan Cranston. And that’s not even half of the cast.
Maya Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Jeff Goldblum, Hong Chau, Liev Schreiber, Matt Dillon, Stephen Park, Hope Davis, Rupert Friend, Tony Revolori, and Jake Ryan are also listed on the newly revealed poster (see below). One missing name is Bill Murray, who was originally cast in the film, but was replaced by Carell after contracting Covid-19 shortly before production was scheduled to begin.
