Welcome to It’s a Hit! In this series, IndieWire speaks to creators and showrunners behind a few of our favorite television programs about the moment they realized their show was breaking big.
“It did feel like the Avengers assembling,” said executive producer Sam Rees-Jones of casting the first all-celebrity edition of “The Traitors” on Peacock. “We knew in Season 2 we wanted to assemble an all celebrity cast knowing that that would create a buzz as well, and would help build on the success of Season 1,” said executive producer Mike Cotton.
The pair, based in the United Kingdom, told IndieWire over Zoom that another key change for the second season of the reality competition series where “faithful” contestants try to weed out who among them are traitors before the latter steal all the money they earned from completing missions was changing the way in which the episodes were rolled out.

Exclusive: An unlikely dream contestant has emerged for The Traitors: Liz Truss.
Stephen Lambert, executive producer of the hit BBC reality series, said the former UK prime minister would be a perfect candidate for the show.
A celebrity version is all but confirmed for 2025 and Deadline asked Lambert and Tim Harcourt, Studio Lambert’s chief creative officer, about potential casting.
Speaking on the BAFTA TV Awards red carpet, Lambert said: “Liz Truss, I think she’d be great. It’s very important on that show to be able to tell the truth, also to not tell the truth, and she would be challenged possibly.”

Claudia Winkleman is said to be returning to host a celebrity version of The Traitors, due to air in 2025.
Proving that there are few things more compelling to watch than a bunch of people conniving and scheming behind each other’s backs in a Scottish castle, The Traitors has been a confirmed hit for the BBC. The second series aired in January, and as we wrote at the time, it was manipulative but thoroughly addictive television.
According to Deadline, the series – which already has several incarnations in other countries – is about to be expanded further, with regular host Claudia Winkleman set to head up a celebrity version.
The series hasn’t been officially announced yet, but Deadline’s sources have said that an agreement between The Traitors’ production company Studio Lambert and the BBC “is close”. If it happens, the celebrity Traitors series will film in 2025 alongside a third series of the mainline show.

Exclusive: Star traitors and faithfuls are set to face off on in the UK in a celebrity version of smash hit format The Traitors, which Deadline understands is set to launch on the BBC next year.
Several sources have told us that an agreement between Studio Lambert, which makes the UK and U.S. versions of The Traitors, and the BBC, which broadcasts it, is close. The hope is that the first celeb version will film next year and go out later in 2025, by which time three seasons of the “civilian” version will have aired. Host Claudia Winkleman is expected to present the celeb version.

Do the Gamers know they don't have a monopoly on reality television?
The second season of The Traitors is a cultural experience -- it's the Megatron of reality television. It has so much built-in reality TV lore and glory that it's no wonder it sets social media on fire.
Honestly, it's the Olympics of reality television and absolutely delicious for understanding every facet of how the genre and its respective fandoms work.
It's the Super Bowl of reality greatness. While some kinks still need to be worked out with the series, from formatting to editing and plenty in between, The Traitors U.S. understands the assignment and deserves to be the hit that it is.
All renditions of The Traitors are positively devourable for various reasons. The savagery of The Traitors U.K. is epic all on its own, and The Traitors Australia has fascinating gameplay.
But The Traitors U.

While there are many different reality TV competition shows, Johnny Bananas feels MTV’s The Challenge “doesn’t get the respect it deserves.”
The seven-time winner of MTV’s show was among the cast members for The Traitors 2, which just wrapped up its finale on Peacock.
Appearing with him was familiar castmate Chris “Ct” Tamburello, who was one of two winners of The Traitors 2.
In a surprising finish, Ct shared the prize of over $200,000 with another star from MTV’s Real World and The Challenge, Trishelle Cannatella.
The MTV stars outlasted a starstudded group that included former cast members from Big Brother, Real Housewives, The Bachelor, and Survivor, among others.
Bananas recently had Trishelle on his Death, Taxes & Bananas podcast to discuss the finale and her exciting win, which he was extremely happy to see.

‘Traitors’ Winner Chris ‘Ct’ Tamburello: ‘The Game Was Designed to Keep You in a State of Confusion’
To viewers of MTV’s The Challenge, it shouldn’t have been a big surprise that Chris “Ct” Tamburello won the second season of the U.S. incarnation of Traitors alongside his longtime Challenge co-competitor Trishelle Cannatella. He’s appeared on 19 seasons of The Challenge and won $1,365,000 — more than any other contestant in the history of the show. But things looked bleak for the Challenge crew when Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio was the first Traitors contestant eliminated this season on The Traitors. “Bananas being eliminated so early doesn’t sit well with me,...

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for the Season 2 finale of “The Traitors,” now streaming on Peacock.
Just like the entire season, “The Traitors” Season 2 finale was jam-packed with drama up until the very end.
After banishing the final traitor, plus two innocent faithfuls, “The Challenge” pals Ct Tamburello and Trishelle Cannatella split the final jackpot of over $200,000.
“Below Deck” star Kate Chastain was the last remaining traitor after “Real Housewives of Atlanta” queen Phaedra Parks was banished in last week’s penultimate episode. However, Kate drew a lot of attention to herself at last week’s roundtable after she piled on Phaedra and called her “more selfish than skillful.”
In her first night as a solo traitor, Kate murdered “Real Housewives of Atlanta” alumni Sheree Whitfield, but the pressure was already high from the remaining faithfuls: “Shahs of Sunset” star Mj Javid, “Survivor” double winner Sandra Diaz-Twine, Ct and Trishelle.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers from “The Weight of Deceit,” the tenth episode of “The Traitors” Season 2, now streaming on Peacock.
The tenth episode of “The Traitors” revealed that while the group was inching closer to identifying Phaedra Parks as a traitor — the last original one — they decided to turn against Peter Weber and banish him instead. Luckily for them, they did not make the same mistake again and sent her home at the end of the episode.
However, when Weber, possibly the best strategic player of the season, was banished, it’s hard to believe that he wouldn’t be screaming with both frustration and joy when learning that Parks has been a traitor all along. But he wasn’t told right away. In fact, he didn’t find out for quite some time, executive producer Mike Cotton tells Variety.

Open social media on any given Thursday night as of late, and you’ve probably seen a message that reads something like “If you’re not watching #TheTraitors wtf are you actually doing.”
The Peacock series, which premiered in January and airs every Thursday night, has become an addictive guilty pleasure, earning the number one spot among unscripted streaming series and turning out endlessly quotable one-liners and internet memes on a weekly basis.
The global franchise originated with the Dutch show De Verraders in 2021. A year later, The Traitors was adapted for a U.

The Traitors 2 winner will soon be revealed on Peacock.
Carsten “Bergie” Bergersen from Love Island USA was Murdered during the most recent episode, and Parvati Shallow from Survivor was Banished.
Only 10 people remain in the game, which seems high since only two episodes remain.
The ninth episode of The Traitors 2 arrives on February 22, and the season finale debuts on February 29.
Adding Kate Chastain from Below Deck helped increase the level of drama, and Phadea Parks from The Real Housewives of Atlanta/Married to Medicine just asked Kate to become a Traitor.
If Kate turns down the offer, she is eliminated from the game, making her the latest victim to be Murdered by a Traitor.
The Traitors 2 can have more than one winner
As a reminder, The Traitors is a show that can yield multiple winners. If the Faithfuls make it to the end and have eliminated all Traitors, they split the prize money.

The news comes less than a month after the debut of the second season of the hit unscripted series, which launched on Jan. 12. New episodes are still dropping weekly on Thursdays. It also comes just weeks after the series won the Emmy for best casting for a reality series.
Hosted by the inimitable and impeccably dressed Alan Cumming, the series features contestants competing for a grand prize of $250,000. The official description states, “Hidden amongst the Faithful are the Traitors, whose goal is to eliminate the Faithful and claim the prize for themselves. Under the cover of darkness, the Traitors murder the Faithful one by one in a treacherous spree, while the Faithful try to uncover the Traitors and banish them from the game. The Traitors has been one of the few bright spots in the unscripted world in recent years, becoming a smash hit for the BBC and Peacock’s most watched unscripted original of all time.
As such, the NBCUniversal streamer has ordered a third season of the mystery game.
It comes as the second season of the Alan Cumming-hosted series is mid-run, having launched in January.
The psychological series is all about treachery and deceit. It sees a group of reality stars and famous faces play a murder mystery game in a castle in the Scottish Highlands. The group must work together on a series of missions to build a prize fund worth up to $250,000. Following the murder of Tamra Judge, the banishment of Janelle Pierzina and the addition of Kate Chastain, exactly 10 faithfuls remained in the running to win “The Traitors.” Collectively, the group still had yet to uncover the identity of any of the traitors, but with Dan Gheesling being called out yet again in public, all eyes were on whether the “Big Brother” star could survive another round table. So how did everything play out in the sixth episode?

Dan Gheesling may be doomed on The Traitors 2.
The former Big Brother winner may have made several critical mistakes. Now, he is in the spotlight and may get Banished.
Dan was chosen as one of the two Traitors by host Alan Cumming this season. He was teamed up with Phaedra Parks from The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Phaedra and Dan picked Survivor’s Parvati Shallow to become the third Traitor with them.
Choosing Parvati has led to some great television, and she is good at being a Traitor, but did Dan make a mistake by not going with Big Brother’s Janelle Pierzina?
Janelle teased Dan on social media about not naming her a Traitor, which could have kept her from targeting him at the recent Roundtable.
Dan is a clear target for The Traitors 2, Episode 6
Four players went after Dan at the last Roundtable, naming him someone who could be a Traitor.

Peacock’s Emmy-winning competition series “The Traitors” is gearing up for its second season of lies, betrayals and cloaks. Due out on January 12, 2024, the Season 2 cast features a lineup of familiar faces from reality TV shows (like “Survivor’s” Parvati Shallow and Sandra Diaz-Twine and “Big Brother’s” Dan Gheesling and Janelle Pierzina) and other notable areas.
Just like the first season, the new installment will take place in the Scottish Highlands with Alan Cumming back as the impeccably dressed host. And this time around, he’ll have a cute sidekick in the form of his dog Lala. The cast will be randomly divided into villainous Traitors and heroic Faithfuls (those who try to uncover the truth). The ultimate winner will take home a cash prize of up to $250,000.

Midway through the fifth episode of “The Traitors” Season 2, host Alan Cumming made good on his promise to increase the number of cast members when he welcomed back one iconic villain from the first season. “This game started with one player missing,” he teased in his trademark Scottish accent. Shocking everyone (including viewers at home), Kate Chastain returned to the castle in epic style during the January 25 episode and immediately promised to “f*** up some s***.” The “Below Deck” star had a memorable run during “The Traitors” Season 1 when she made it to fifth place, often sparring with “Big Brother’s” Rachel Reilly along the way. “Well, I’m back. Did you miss me?” she asked the audience coyly.

The BBC will be offering more series of The Traitors from around the world, starting with season two of the Australian show.
This weekend, as those who have been avidly watching the show will know, marks the conclusion of The Traitors series two here in the UK. For most of January, a growing number of people have watched a bunch of contestants in a Scottish castle metaphorically stabbing each other in the back. Claudia Winkleman, meanwhile, watches and approves.
The format has sold around the world, and the BBC has already added the first seasons of The Traitors from the USA and Australia to its iPlayer service. The USA version is very celebrity-driven, while the Australian version, which features regular folk, is great.

They don’t call her Queen Sandra for nothin’.
In a new sneak peek video for “The Traitors” Season 2, two-time “Survivor” winner Sandra Diaz-Twine (for “Pearl Islands” and “Heroes vs. Villains”) proudly declares, “You would think I’m your best friend, when in fact, I’m here to destroy you.” She comes into Peacock’s reality TV show with a villainous reputation for turning on anyone as long as it takes her further in the game. The UK version of The Traitors series 2 resists reality TV stars and keeps the format familiar: and it’s sticking to its guns.
I can’t say I’m an avid follower of reality television programmes as they stand at the moment. I remember devouring early series of Big Brother and The Apprentice, when they were very much in their infancy. Yet over time, the contestants became more knowing of what they were getting into, the shows heightened things and became crueller, and watching something like The Apprentice now, it feels like it’s more about Alan Sugar’s ego and humiliating people through editing rather than an interesting show.
It’s why The Traitors – the UK version – was such a breath of fresh air at the end of 2022.
Here was a brand new format (to the UK at least) that basically played with a murder mystery-style format, where it...

Peacock’s Emmy-nominated competition series “The Traitors” is gearing up for its second season of lies, betrayals and cloaks. Due out in early 2024, the Season 2 cast features a lineup of familiar faces from reality shows (like “Survivor’s” Parvati Shallow and Sandra Diaz-Twine and “Big Brother’s” Dan Gheesling and Janelle Pierzina) and other notable areas.
Just like last season, the new installment will take place in the Scottish Highlands with Alan Cumming back as the impeccably dressed host. And this time around, he’ll have a cute sidekick in the form of his dog Lala. The cast will be randomly divided into villainous Traitors and heroic Faithfuls (those who try to uncover the truth). The ultimate winner will take home a cash prize of up to $250,000.

Singer Lance Bass, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and “The Masked Singer” executive producer Craig Plestis are among the names behind “Unicorn Hunters,” a crowd-financing competition series now being shopped for domestic distribution.
The series centers on finding so-called “unicorn” companies — startups that reach $1 billion valuation, by attracting investors from around the world. The show’s pitch: “No one has the ability to predict which companies will ultimately become unicorns, but ‘Unicorn Hunters’ offers you a front-row seat to hear the pitch from businesses that have what it takes to become one. With ‘Unicorn Hunters,’ you ‘discover’ private startups at the same time as our panel of experts, and you get an equal shot at investing in these very promising companies before they go big.”
