Alice Diop’s Saint Omer has been selected as France’s entry to the best international film category.
The drama was among five features shortlisted for the honor out of 33 submissions alongside Eric Gavel’s Full Time, Lise Asoka and Roman Gueret’s The Worst Ones, Alice Winocour’s Paris Memories and Mia Hansen-Love’s One Fine Morning.
Saint Omer recently premiered at Venice, winning the Silver Lion Grand Jury prize and Luigi De Laurentis First Film Award.
Loosely inspired by a real-life infanticide trial in 2013, the drama follows a pregnant novelist as she attends the troubling trial of a young Senegalese woman accused of killing her 15-month-old daughter by abandoning her to the rising tide on a beach in northern France.
The drama is lead produced by Toufik Ayadi and Christophe Barral at Paris-based Srab Films, who previously took credits on Ladj Ly’s Oscar-nominated French feature Les Misérables.

When France announced its shortlist of five films it will consider for its international Oscar submission this week, it was the start of a new chapter in the country’s efforts to win the prize. With the backlash still simmering from last year, when the subversive Palme d’Or winner “Titane” got the slot over emotional crowdpleaser “Happening,” the country has revised its approach in an attempt to support films more likely to secure the nomination.
This year’s selection has no obligatory entry from the official Cannes competition, which reflects the decision to remove festival head Thierry Fremaux from his influential spot on the committee after more than a decade of wielding influence there. Additionally, the one possible entry from a veteran French auteur was snubbed as Claire Denis’ romantic drama “Both Sides of the Blade,” which won Best Director at the Berlinale, did not make the cut.

Gregoire Melin’s Kinology, the banner behind “Annette,” has boarded “Queens,” Yasmine Benkiran’s feature debut, which will make its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival.
The uplifting Moroccan movie will unspool on closing night of Critics Week. Kinology represents the film in international markets.
The sprawling, colorful adventure film opens in Casablanca, where a trio of rebellious female outlaws – a mother, her daughter and a young girl – drive through the Atlas desert to reach the Atlantic coast with local police forces on their trail.
Benkiran said her film “celebrates freedom and the power of imagination,” as well as conveying the need for women to free themselves from patriarchal traditions in contemporary Moroccan society.
The up-and-coming French-Moroccan director said she aspired to make a film with depth that blended genre with local mythology to tell this story.

International sales agents Hengameh Panahi, Grégoire Melin, producers Philippe Rousselet, Didar Domehri and directors Jacques Audiard and Michel Gondry have been named as the members of France’s new-look Oscar committee.
They will be joined by veteran Gaumont executive Ariane Toscan du Plantier.
The announcement by the National Cinema Centre (Cnc) follows news this week that the Ministry of Culture had set in a motion an overhaul of the commission.
Under the changes, the heads of the Cannes Film Festival, export agency Unifrance and the César Academy, who have traditionally been at the heart of the process, are no longer automatically part of the commission.
This means that long-time Cannes delegate general Thierry Frémaux will not be involved in the selection process for the first time in more than a decade.

“You’ve got to know when it’s time to leave,” Cannes Festival head Thierry Frémaux joked to laughter at a packed farewell cocktail on Monday to Jerôme Paillard. “Thanks to you all for being here, the old guard, getting older every year, including myself. And again, one word for you, Jérôme: Merci.”
Meanwhile Paillard, looking young for his 66 years, stood beside Frémaux and beamed. The complicity between Fremaux and Paillard was evident at the drinks party which was meant to be a farewell, but also served as a homage.
“He’s one of the fundamental builders of the Cannes Festival since without its economy and trade, neither cinematographic creation nor the trajectory of the Festival would have enjoyed the same reputation or impact,” Cannes Festival president Pierre Lescure
Many will share Lescure’s sentiment. For 27 years, Paillard has run the Cannes Marché du Film, overseeing and powering its extraordinary growth.

Paris-based company Kinology has secured international sales to “Il Sol Dell’Avvenire,” from Italian auteur and Cannes regular Nanni Moretti. Pic is currently shooting in Rome.
The deal between Kinology and Domenico Procacci’s Fandango, which is producing in tandem with Moretti’s Sacher shingle and Rai Cinema, marks the first time Kinology has handled a Moretti pic.
Kinology, which is headed by Grégoire Melin, will be launching pre-sales on “Il Sol” in Cannes.
Moretti’s latest work has been described by the director as both an unconventional comedy and a period piece set in Rome between the 1950s and the 1970s amid the city’s circus world, but also involving the world of cinema.
Though that is quite vague, what’s clear is that Moretti seems keen to shift gears, moving into lighter fare following his ensemble melodrama “Three Floors,” which was in Cannes last year.

To say that Julia Ducournau’s Palme d’Or win in July inspired waves of excitement across swaths of the French industry would be something of an understatement.
Indeed, to those working in genre, the fact that the “Titane” filmmaker became only the second woman director to claim one of the film world’s most august accolades follows well behind an accomplishment that they would argue puts in her even more rarified company: That she claimed such a feat from within an industry still hostile to genre itself.

The 74th annual Cannes Film Festival beat the odds by delivering two weeks of nonstop movies — and major stars such as Matt Damon, Regina King and Timothée Chalamet — in the middle of a global pandemic.
It wasn’t an easy task. Variety has learned that the festival fronted more than $1 million to cover the costs of regular, free Covid testing to approximately 28,000 attendees. Those from the European Union could bypass such procedures by showing proof of vaccination, but there were no guarantees that people wouldn’t get sick as the Delta variant spread globally.
When French actor Léa Seydoux, who had three films in competition, canceled her trip to Cannes after testing positive for Covid-19, which she contracted on a movie set, some feared that it was the beginning of a wave of cases.

IFC Films has acquired U.S. rights to Mia Hansen-Løve’s Bergman Island, ahead of the film’s world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
The acquisition marks IFC’s fourth collaboration with the writer/director, on the heels of the features Father of My Children, Goodbye First Love and Things to Come.
Bergman Island centers on romantically involved American filmmakers Chris (Vicky Krieps) and Tony (Tim Roth), watching as they retreat to the mythical island of Fårö for the summer. Amidst the wild beauty of the landscape where Ingmar Bergman lived and filmed his most acclaimed works, the pair hope to find inspiration for their upcoming films. As days spent separately from Tony pass by, Chris’s fascination with the island grows, and memories of her first love come to the surface. Lines between reality and fiction then begin to blur, and tear the couple further apart.
