Tracy McMillan, the creator and executive producer of Onyx Collective/Hulu’s newest dramedy “UnPrisoned,” says she didn’t create the series as a “favor” for the audience, but rather as an outlet to work through her own trauma.
She’s an author, realtionship expert, TV writer and now the creator of “UnPrisoned,” a half-hour dramedy based on McMillan’s life adjusting to her now-late father re-entering her life after being freed from prison. The series stars Kerry Washington, who plays Paige, the “UnPrisoned” version of McMillan. While Paige’s father’s (Delroy Lindo) transition out of incarceration establishes the show, viewers eventually peel back even more layers of her life, which involves traumatic memories from prison visits and living in foster homes.
The storyline mirrors McMillan’s real life growing up with a criminal for a father and going in and out of foster homes. And while it’s...

Her daughter, then just a kindergartner, unwittingly overheard the whole call — including news of the shooting.

Anonymous Content has nabbed the rights to “What If It’s Us,” a young-adult novel that’s attracting a lot of buzz before its publication next month. The company has tapped “13 Reasons Why” creator and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Brian Yorkey to adapt the book for the big screen.

Albertalli wrote “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda,” which was recently adapted into the film “Love, Simon,” and Silvera penned “They Both Die at the End.” “What If It’s Us” is in a similar vein. [Editor’s Note: This review contains mild spoilers for “13 Reasons Why” Season 2.]
“13 Reasons Why” is not a show that shies away from controversial material. The Netflix drama reaches people on a deeply personal level, and that includes executive producer Joy Gorman Wettels, who audibly sniffled when IndieWire brought up a scene from the Season 2 finale.
“Don’t worry about it,” Gorman Wettels said, after an apology. “I mean, it’s an emotional show. It’s really emotional. It ain’t a comedy, you know what I’m saying? But if we didn’t have this level of investment in what we’re doing, you would see it on the screen.”
“13 Reasons Why” chronicles the aftermath of teenage Hannah Baker’s (Katherine Langford) suicide in her small town, and, as Wettels said, it’s most definitely not played for laughs. Netflix announced the renewal of “13 Reasons” last May, after the freshman season debuted in March 2017 and quickly captured widespread buzz.
The first season of the series, based on Jay Asher’s young-adult book by the same name, centers around the death a high-school girl, Hannah, played by Katherine Langford, who has left behind a series of 13 cassette tapes for her friend and crush Clay (Dylan Minnette) explaining what led her to suicide.
The streamer announced the premiere date on social media, with the caption, “The tapes were just the beginning.” That came after it teased the reveal in posts earlier Monday saying “The truth is developing” and a live-stream showing two Polaroid photos — leaving fans on tenterhooks for several hours.

Keira Knightley's former colleagues are rushing to her defense after her Begin Again director, John Carney, questioned her acting ability in a recent interview. Carney, who directed Knightley in the 2013 musical romantic comedy, told The Independent that he was "disenchanted" after working with her on the film and "learned that I'll never make a film with supermodels again." He added, "I like to work with curious, proper film actors as opposed to movie stars.
